Woodturning - The Biggest Piece I've EVER Made!

  • In this video, I turn a large piece of fallen Elm into a massive statement vase!
The wood used to connect the two halves of the vase together was figured Ash, I will be using its offcuts for a video in the future as they are far too beautiful to burn!
The vase was sanded to 1000 grit and finished with Danish oil and Wood wax. Let me know what you think, and if you'd like to purchase this piece. This statement vase is approximately 550mm x 290mm!

My videos are for entertainment purposes only. Some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest, so when using any tool or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines first.
And Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practice. The gloves I wear are tight-fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT copy my actions if you feel unsafe doing so.

    WOW Harry!
This is the best and most mature piece you've done...at least that I have seen.
    What I mean by mature...
Save for painters, musicians, sculptors, & writers, etc. like da Vinci, Michelangelo, Beethoven, and Shakespeare, the rest of us grow into our art. It takes lots of time, LOTS of practice, passion, drive, letting go of ego... to get to the point where we ['finally'] let ART Itself guide & move us in IT'S Direction & Way. That's where/when/HOW we start to produce mature art. (Sadly, some never do.)
The piece you did here shows me you're starting to let go and let Art guide you.
The shape, lines, the visual texture... how and where it is highlighted... are all brought together to form an excellent piece.
As you worked you moved through the layers to discover it's beauty then carved and formed it to best display that beauty...that's sculpting Harry, SCULPTING.
    Remember...
    Let go ego,
    Embrace humility,
    Listen to hear your intuition,
    Then follow IT.
(I've been at this a very long time.)
I know, by looking at it, when I was was in my head or when I 'got out of the way.' They are ALWAYS better when I check my ego at the door. When someone compliments me, I say thank you followed immediately with one of two things, either 'God did that, not me' or [laughing] 'It fought me...until I surrendered...and got out of the way.'
If you are willing to walk the path of humility with your art - I GUARANTEE you will find the experience truly meaningful and satisfying, plus you will sometimes be surprised, & sometimes be amazed. The pieces 'you' produce will be on a higher level and they will really get noticed. You will get a lot more traffic on your website. And so on.
I REALLY hope you take in what I'm trying to pass on to you (And everyone else who's reading it) The results will be as different as night and day.
    Best,
    Rev. Kevin

Simply beautiful with that colour and grain .Surprising how much elm is still about since the decimation from elm disease in the seventies, they continue to throw up suckers that live for a number of years until they in turn succumb to the disease. Cheers Bram

Thanks for watching Beverly, it would be almost impossible to hollow out the vase without splitting it in half, so I had to have a band. In future I will try to hide it more 😉😊
