John - I agree that crossing more will likely help intonation (but you know if I was your teacher I'd make you do this both ways to improve your shifting too!) Try this: m41 (0 1) m42 (4-14-1 all G, yes more shifting but hang in there a moment) m43 (2 0) m44 (1 on A 4 on G) m45 (1 4 on D) m46 (0 -4 this is only a small 1/2 step shift now) m47 (2 4 on D - all this was the same position that your high F was in a measure ago) m48 (0-102 - shifted during the open G back to 1st position) Good luck and let me know if this helps!
Thanks Gaelen, m44 1 on A to 4 on G works really well and makes the transition to m45 and 46 much easier. Shifting exercise is good but not very pretty.
Gaelen, thanks so much for doing this series of videos. I've just started working through Etude 1 and I am having trouble from measure 41 to 48. I think better tone and intonation can be gained by limiting up-down shifting and working across the strings. But I cannot settle on a good fingering pattern. Can you suggest a pattern that you think would work best?
It is nice to see a bass player demonstrate a relaxed wrist for bowing technique.
Vou começar a estudar com suas dicas
Brilliant....thank you so much for these videos. You are an inspiration.
This is so helpful! Thank you so much! You helped me get into an orchestra with etude 1
Wow - good for you and congrats! You put in the work and it paid off!
Thank you so much for this whole series - very informative and most useful!
Thanks! I do practice it on a bass and it`s a joy!
Excellent. Where can I buy sheet music or books specifically for double bass? Pop tunes, jazz, classical etc
