Bow masking shift exercise
Переглядів 2063 роки тому
To quote the amazing Orin O'Brien - if you heard something between the notes of the shift, you BOW played it! It took me forever to realize that it wasn't just the speed of my left hand shifting but that I also needed to "mask" the distance of the shift with the bow speed/weight. This simple exercise will help you coordinate the right hand to the left hand (and we know the left hand is always t...

Folks you'll have to guess how many years my father has achieved, though I do allude to it in the opening shot. We all know that fathers are SuperMen, so I wanted to include a little homage to Superman in here.

Irlandais Progressive Rep vol 1
Переглядів 1893 роки тому
This is a quick exercise to help address playing in 6/8 time. Often we get confused when we first encounter 6/8 because we are so used to seeing a quarter note as The Beat. Quarter = 1, right? Well, not in 6/8.... The eighth note is what we are counting in... so a quarter note = 2. I promise it's not hard to get used to when you use the Irlandais prep exercise to help get into the swinging, lil...

Waking up

This is a Christmas gift to my parents, December 2019. I don't usually write in pentatonic, but it's been in my inner ear hearing lately as part of a chant I've been doing. The "key" to the characters follows the video. I wanted to create something that captures their personalities, especially how different they are as they start, or finish, their days. Big thank you to Sarah Wager for helping ...

I wrote this duet as a tribute to the lovely Angela Bianco a couple weeks ago. I'm in the middle of writing a lot of duets lately, and her name inspired me to write it in the key of Ab (can you see why? it's her initials!) My nerds will also figure out that the first 4 notes spell out B. A. S. S. (if you use the German spelling "Es" or E-flat) to honor her husband Tony Bianco. There's a little ...
Junior High All County- Bacchanale - Bass part tips

This tutorial covers the MCSMA All County arrangement of the Saint-Saens Bacchanale bass part. I stop off at the few places you want to have a look at before rehearsals begin. Good news! The places are often little chunks that repeat, so learn a spot, get some mileage out of it. To dive into a specific spot right away, here are the places I cover: 1:04 m. 36 2:57 m. 55 4:17 m. 89 5:53 m. 182 6:...

Good job Gaele well playing and useful tips..I did not know these etudes, I learnt with Bille, I think the Simandl's 30 is the equivalent of Bille book 3

All the accompaniments to Simandl etudes are available on IMSLP for free as a pdf download.
The next section is marked
I'm really grateful for your tips, they help a lot, especially since I do not have a professional coach right now. I also really enjoy your bass sound. The recording quality is a simple, but what I hear sounds great!
Hi, sounds great professor! My copy of this etude has a down bow on the second note of bar 14 (E). Just curious - is yours marked as a down bow and how important is this? Thank you!
Vou começar a estudar com suas dicas
Que hermoso sonido ❤
Thank you I have to play this for a audition at school
Thanks for posting this (seven years ago!). I just started tackling #13 today. This video, as all your Simandl videos, is very helpful.
Super! Thank you so much
Great lesson, thanks!
Excellent. Where can I buy sheet music or books specifically for double bass? Pop tunes, jazz, classical etc
Should I not use open strings in say bar 5 , to practice tone, intonation, possibly vibrato etc ? I'd like to get better around the heel ..thnx for these examples of how these etudes should sound!
Hi....fantastic tutorial , I'm gonna give this a bash as a self taught Bassist I'll give myself time advantage....lot's of time.
It is nice to see a bass player demonstrate a relaxed wrist for bowing technique.
Very helpful, thank you!

Amazing. Your sound is so big and rich. I’m working on this etude the last few weeks and I’m excited to incorporate your ideas. Many thanks.
Thank you so much for these videos. One of my pandemic projects has been to work through several of the Simandl etudes on my own. Your videos have set me on the right path many times.
What a smart pandemic project! Glad these were useful.
adorei sua pagina... vou seguir e estudar com vc.
👍. 👏.
your videos help a ton! thanks for posting miss gaelen, keep at it

Really helpful! Thank you!
Thank you so much. I am going to work through these!!
I’m working on this right now but it doesn’t sound nearly as good as yours
I have a fancy digital app of a metronome and I STILL can't figure out how to set the half note=part. Any advice on metronome types?
Jeremiah - tell me a little more about what's happening. If you set your metronome (we're talking about etude 10, yes?) on the quarter note = 126 or slower to practice, what is bugging you? Is it sustaining the half notes? Or perhaps where they are tied over the bar? Give me a measure # and more specifics - I'd be happy to help you.
Gaelen McCormick, teacher and composer actually made my instructor happy with the performance of it on my last lesson. I watch your etude explanations as we go through then book. I think I sometimes have trouble reading the syncopation. I hear it or he “gives it to me” so to speak but getting it off the page hasn’t been happening. I hear the play along cd or I watch you play. His challenge was to utilize my eyes more play the correct intervals. It’s probably has influence. Sometimes do instinctual things that are wrong and don’t realize I’m doing them. What I wanted to do was set the metronome half note=whatever number you said but the app won’t let me.
@@jeremiahsalyer7784 oh I understand! All I'm doing when I say to set the metronome to the half note, is changing the # on the screen - so if this was at 126 for the quarter, reset your # to 63 (or half of 126) to work at the half note level. It's not a different setting or anything.
Gaelen McCormick, teacher and composer cool but there are some pieces I want to set half note equals. Even one of the simandl etude says half note equals.
It's very good music!!!!!!! Thank you for playing the simandl etude. I'm japanese high school student. I play the contrabass too. I little understand English and I still having trouble listening to native English. so please, Could you add English or japanese subtitles your video?
Thank you for this comment. I have wanted to add subtitles, and just did not get to doing it. I will work on that soon. Thank you for asking!
This sounds quite a bit like that one phantom of the opera song music of the night

Thanks for doing this.
Beautiful!!
What bass do you play it sounds amazing and I’ve been looking into potentially buying a bass for myself
In this video I'm playing a Shen 5/8 model in the gamba shape (they have two shapes for this size). For many players, I recommend Shen instruments for quality and good price point. They also have a variety of woods - some are part plywood and carved, all the way up through fully carved. Hope this helps, and good for you getting your own bass! (here is the site for the local shop, which happens to be the main importer and designer of Shen basses: www.cscproducts.com/products.html)
This was just what I needed to hear tonight. Thank you both.
Уродский этюд, не могу его сыграть 🤕
muy muy buenos tus consejos y muy inspiradores para los que estamos empezando, muchas gracias, eres genial
I'm not practising for any audition, but this helps me to review my scales. Thanks!
dang
BRAVO!!!!!TANKS SO MUCH!!!!LOVE IT!
Isnt the first spot rhythm, 4 eighths, sixteenth rest, 2 sixteeths, eighth, 2 sixteenths?
Nevermind I'm pretty sure this is the other version
It’s been a year since I recorded this, and it’s possible they were either using an arrangement or that the opening has it one way then later the rhythm comes exactly as you described it. I no longer have that particular part to reference -sorry!
This is so helpful! Thank you so much! You helped me get into an orchestra with etude 1
Wow - good for you and congrats! You put in the work and it paid off!
Gotta play this in community Symphony ...could use help with time signutare changes and up and down bowings... thx....
Hi there, any news on the duets book? thanks.
Thanks for asking! It is now available at my website www.bassretreat.com/shop in either hard copy or digital download.
Could you suggest some tips on how to apply variations in specific broken thirds? The universal method is also very useful when studying scales on each degree of the scale using for example the standards: Doric mode, Phrygian mode, Lydian mode, and so on? And one last question, is there also a universal method for minor scales? Thank you !
Alex, WOW - great questions. Let me try to give you answers one by one. Variations in broken thirds - I’m not exactly sure if I’m understanding you, but here is what I do to use thirds in my scale practice. A) every third is across the string (so you have to shift after each pair of notes and really think about major 3rd or minor 3rd) B) every third is shifted, so no crossing until you can play both next 2 notes on that next string. C) thirds - or any scale practice- all on the same finger. Shift, shift, shift, shift, ... BUT you have to really listen and think ahead to your next spot on the fingerboard. I imagine you could adapt the universal patter for each mode. I mean, each of those modal scales you mentioned has a pattern of whole and half steps. I’m looking to keep the shifts to a 1/2 step to make it compact, and this comes in very handy in faster orchestral playing. I can start on first finger and fly through a scale on autopilot knowing that my pitches are (theoretically) correct. Universal pattern for minors - there must be. I just teach it so much later than one octave majors, that by then I’m usually teaching 2 octave minors. But try this - for natural minor - 1-24 cross -1-24 cross -14. Hope this is helpful!
Thank you very much! I understood a lot of the explanation but I would like a video if possible, because it is something that I consider very relevant and I can not find information about it on any other channel, and it would be a pleasure to watch your lessons here.
Here is a random example of what I mentioned, playing in sequence within a certain key. Is there a method that facilitates the memorization of modes for all tonalities, some standard or universal fingering? Example Link : 2.bp.blogspot.com/-DIfxkRxr48k/VKbRnjadcpI/AAAAAAAANcA/Diglfb9G1KQ/s1600/gre.JPG
Alex J.M.S. - let me think about the modes question. I think my jazz playing friends will have an answer. And I will consider putting up a new video shortly. Thank you for asking really good questions!!
thank you for posting!🙏🙏🙏
Amazing work thank you
