A wonderful relationship with recycling tools you don't need into tools you do and I am reconsidering making some carbide tip tools again. thanks for the information. I am looking forward to more videos.
Thank you Al, some of these tools, I have made myself, but now after watching your video, I can make the rest of them and I have already ordered my cutters from Global tooling. Great video, keep them coming.
I've been wood turning for about six months now and enjoy every minute of it. I usually don't subscribe to anyone but have watched some of your videos and have enjoyed them all. I am going to try to make my own tool because they are so expensive and if I can make one myself then why now so that's for you video.
Just want to say you're my favorite to watch turn. I am a beginner Turner and enjoy your advice on all aspects of turning and I think your work is awesome. Thanks and happy turning. Cletus
Great tools! and my mouth fell open when I went to the Global Tooling website!!! Thanks so much for the info. I'm very into the drill bit scraper tool. might have to try my hand at making one like it. Thanks for the video!
Al, I really enjoyed this video. That just shows that you don't have to use those 50 dollar or 135 dollar tools just to make beautiful work. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas. God Bless my friend.
As always I love your use of good ol common sense approach to doing what need to be done! I also made some of your tools with plain squire stock from Home Depot. They work great! Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Al you do really great work with whatever tool you use Glad to see someone not using high dollar tools and doing a fantastic job turning you probably won't get a big lathe sponsor doing videos like this lol Thanks Al
I really enjoyed this video Mr. Furtado ! I bought my lathe about 4 yrs ago and have been learning every day since. Recently, I began researching parts to begin making my own turning tools and your video covers all the aspects I've come to know. You've put it to practice, where I'm still in the research phase. lol :) You've inspired me to carry on w/ my plan. Thanks again and I enjoy coffee all day every day, no matter the season, as you do. Brothers in spirit, you might say ! lol Steph
Hi Al, second time I have watched this, once when it was new. Stopped at a Craigslisting last night and picked up 15 tools, some Sorbys, Crown, others, and some smalls for detailing at a bargain. Included the Sorby self propelled 2" sander. Went at a glued up egg bowl today that was finished on the outside, glued to a waste block and started on the inside. About 2/3 finished on the inside when the pointy ground I mean an arrow grind on finger gouge threw it off the lathe. Ha, ha, missed me. Al told me to stay away from the line of fire. Appreciate the tips in this vid. Have Global open on one of my tabs. Hope you weather out alright with these incoming storms. Dennis.
Very nice indeed. Cutting tools is something I don't generally come across very often. Sound like you hit the jackpot.. WOW gad you heard me saying to stand out of the line of fire. We just never know.Take care my friend. Happy turning.
Hi Al, Great video! I too love to make my own tools and just about anything that helps me to attain my end goals without spending tons of money! Thanks for the video! Tom
Yep, I need to make my own round scraper too; I did my first vase yesterday and wish I had one to get around the sides easier and I couldn't quite reach the bottom either. Thanks for the link.
What do you mean by...Nothing special...All the tools you've made are specialized tools to suit your needs Al...!Thank you for your input...! Great video show...!
Thank you my friend. I haven't heard from you recently. I am glad you watched and commented on this one again. I hope you had a great Christmas and hope you Have a Great and Happy New YearTake care my friend.
Thank you my friend. I am glad you found it informative. If it gave you any ideas than I would say it did it's job........Take care........Happy New year.
al I just wanted to tell you I made 2 of the carbide tools like you did and they came out really good..i used 1/2 square steel and 15 mm square cutter..if I can figure out how to add a picture on here I will...now I want to make a curved hollowing tool...thanks again for your help
Nice video Al! It was an inspiration! I've been lookin for mini carbide tools but they're really expensive! This inspired me to try to make my own! Steve
some excellent tools you've made there Al, and they all seem to be very effective in their use, as we have seen in the past. A belated merry Christmas to you and your family, and may the New Year bring all that you wish for. Take good care my friend Mike
Thank you Mike. What a pleasure it is to keep seeing you commenting on my videos. I still don't know how you manage. I have a hard time just keeping up with comments. I need to invest in a speech program that will type what I say LOL.Happy New Year my friend.
Nice video Al, I have some old kango hammer drill bits and chisels somewhere in one of my sheds, going to have to hunt them out sometime and have a go making a gouge or two. Take care mate, Bram.
Now I know your secrets to your fine bowl turning. I like the flat part inside your sharpening jig to hold the chisel in place. Did you tap a hole in the flat piece and put it in the jig and run the bolt through the jig and then screw the bolt into the flat piece when it is loose sitting in the jig. Sure works well
Well I tapped the center of the through bolt to hold a screw that in turn held the washer in place but free to turn inside while you tighten the tool. This keeps the tool from trying to spin on you
Feliz Ano Novo;Un grando abraco dest amigo.
Thank you for the great video, and the link to Global Tooling (they should be giving you a discount). Like many others I really like your sharpening jig - would you consider making a video on making one
Thank you my friend. WOW I am so glad you were able to make your cutter tools WTG. I have considered making another but Capt Eddie has an awesome video n his version as well. ua-cam.com/video/5i9RDnJHz9g/v-deo.html You might want to check it out. See you next time. Take care
Hmmmm. They have a ton and they all work. Get some radius and some square. they are about 1/70 ea. and you buy them in 10 packs.Take care Happy New Year!
That is awesome Jeff. Yes I have done quite a few with round and square stock. I like using round for round cutters and square for square. but it doesn't make a lot of difference. I find Home Depot to have a better selection on steel.
I like your sharpening jig. Is it a pipe inside of a pipe. I used a single nipple and it really needs to be beefed up like yours. I am going to send an order to Global for some tips. Thanks for the tip.
What do you mean nothing special? Any turner can build their tool collection with a lot less money than to go buy manufactured "wood turning" tools. This is a valuable load of information, especially the part about different steel stocks that can be used and the relief cuts under the carbide cutters. Also, check out 'eddiecastilin.com' his round cutters (and possibly the square ones) might be even less expensive than the source listed in this video. Great video!
Thanks for the nice compliment Thomas. I have been and continue to be a huge fan of Cap'n Eddy. and yes he is very reasonable with his prices. Not sure he can touch the price of the square and it's been a while since I have looked at his site.Perhaps next time I will check him out again and besides I'd rather pay a bit more and support a fellow turner.
If you want the best steel for punches, chisels, taps, and other tools the absolute best is the shafts out of shock absorbers and McPherson struts. drill bits are very hard but no on the shaft portion. they are probabaly down to a rockwell 55 or so. If you go on ebay you can buy HSS round lathe bits in half inch pretty cheaply. and you will make a much better tool. good luck.
Hi Al, as an engineer just thought I would mention for you to get a wheel dresser when you can. They are neede to open up or sharpen your grind stones. If you never dress your wheels you find then tend to burn the steel, or are more prone to burning the steel. We have about 3 at work because we grind a lot of drills and it makes a big difference. Here is a link to one on Amazon www.amazon.com/Huntington-Desmond-Dresser-No-0-Face/dp/B009KVPGWM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1482627545&sr=8-1&keywords=No+0+wheel+dresser. Yours Allister
I agree and have considered a dressing stone for some time. Thanks for the ink....... I do have a question... do those flat diamond bars do a good job or do I have to get the wheel type?Take care Happy New Year!
Hi Al we always use the wheel type for bench grinders. I only use the diamond type on surface or cylinder grinding machines. I think the diamond flat bars are best used for dressing hand stones to keep them flat. Keep making great videos. I have just put one up about using a VFD as well. Yours Allister Denyer
Thank you for the video. I love making my own tools also and I like the carbide cutters so thanks for the info on where to get them at a reasonable price. Hope you had a good Christmas and happy new year.
Al, hi! A few days ago I ask for your opinion on midi lathe selection for use while I full time rv. I also inquired on using carbide tools. As I don't have anything at all, and I want to build my own, I need to figure out how to turn my handles. I wonder if I might use a wood rasp to shape the handle since its basically a spindle. I would expect a lot of tear out, but a lot of sanding should eventually smooth things out. Or....just drill a hole into a dowel and sink a round rod with a carbide cutter just as makeshift first chisel. Whatcha think?
you can even use a metal pipe as a handle maybe dress it up with a hose sleeve. just made a dowel to fit inside the pipe and drill it on center after it is in the pipe. of course Epoxy both the dowel to the pipe than the shaft to the inner dowel Black pipe or galvanized works well
Thank you Al, a little ingenuity can save a bunch of money.. I hope you and the misses are sailing in calm sunny weather ..Blessings
There's nothing more satisfying then making your own tool's that actually work . Nice one Al.
I totally agree.... Thank you Glen.Take care Happy New Year!

On the bottom make sure you place your tool rest inside as far as it can go and you need a heavy duty tool that isn't too aggressive.Take care

GI eat video. Mr. Furtado, could you post a link to the actual square carbide cutters you get from global tooling ? Thanks either way.
Hmmmm. They have a ton and they all work. Get some radius and some square. they are about 1/70 ea. and you buy them in 10 packs.Take care Happy New Year!
Great stuff, love to make my own stuff also. The tool you made from the masonry drill, what part did you use, the part before the spiral?
thank you for that it was very interesting. Brian
Thank you for watching and commenting my friend...... Take care
I enjoyed that, thank you.
Thanks Jerry.....Take care Happy New Year!
al I went to lowes today but all I could find was round 1/2 bar stock,,i know the square would be best but have you ever made any out of round stock,,
That is awesome Jeff. Yes I have done quite a few with round and square stock. I like using round for round cutters and square for square. but it doesn't make a lot of difference. I find Home Depot to have a better selection on steel.
thank you al,,is global tool the only place you buy your inserts,,i cant find any of the round ones there
globaltooling.bizhosting.com/products/carbide-insert-knives.html ..........azcarbide.com/
I like your sharpening jig. Is it a pipe inside of a pipe. I used a single nipple and it really needs to be beefed up like yours. I am going to send an order to Global for some tips. Thanks for the tip.
Thank you very much my friend. I am glad you got something out of it..Take Care
What do you mean nothing special? Any turner can build their tool collection with a lot less money than to go buy manufactured "wood turning" tools. This is a valuable load of information, especially the part about different steel stocks that can be used and the relief cuts under the carbide cutters. If you want the best steel for punches, chisels, taps, and other tools the absolute best is the shafts out of shock absorbers and McPherson struts. You can get old rusted out ones at junk yards for a couple of bucks. If you want to machine it, bury it in charcoal and let it burn overnight to normalize it. Then heat treat the finished product. Way cheaper than buying drill rod or tool steel.
Thanks for the fine tips Lawrence in this case I just worked with stuff I had hanging around and they seem to work fine. Thanks for watching. Take care my friend.
Al,Thanks
Thanks you for watching Happy New year
Learned lots
Could you please send a link to the round cutters, can't seem to find them, I would really appreciate it .Thanks for the very informative video 👍👍👍👍

drill bits are very hard but no on the shaft portion. they are probabaly down to a rockwell 55 or so. If you go on ebay you can buy HSS round lathe bits in half inch pretty cheaply. and you will make a much better tool. good luck.

Thank you Scott I had a great Christmas and I hope you did as well. Happy new Year
I thought the drill bit tool was great, since I made one and it works well. Good video for people of a like mind!!! LOL...
Thank my friend Yeah that drill bit works great
Sorry to bother you with a question, but have you ever turned gum tree
I believe I have and it was a pleasure to turn I did a largest vase and R2D2 toy box
Thumbs up!!!

If the lathe is at the right hight all things should be equal
Whatcha think?
you can even use a metal pipe as a handle maybe dress it up with a hose sleeve. just made a dowel to fit inside the pipe and drill it on center after it is in the pipe. of course Epoxy both the dowel to the pipe than the shaft to the inner dowel Black pipe or galvanized works well
thank you
