I agree with the forage snippet. Tadpoles are often over looked by many anglers. Especially bull frog tadpoles. They are large, and thrive in underwater vegetation. Just as large as gills.
Great vid. Let me tell you some juice i figured out. I was punching milfoil at cedar creek lake ky. Its managed as a trophy fishery, people are only allowed to take 1 bass a day and it has to be 20 inches, but its frowned upon to take any bass from it. They dont kill vegetation, it has milfoil and tons of structure, theres no water skiing, jetskis or pleasure boats allowed, its purely for fishing. I fished for 5 hours punching milfoil without a bite. I was so mad, i decided to try something stupid. I put a bluegill colored fluke on a tokyo rig, and started punching with that, caught 5 fish in a hour. I used the lightest weight i could get away with, 5/8, 3/4, sometimes 1 in the really thick shit. They werent touching a creature bait because like you said, theyve seen it 1000 times. Try that if you ever get in a jam where they just arent biting.
Got a few crickets for when it gets tough! Blk Blu, grn pmkn. Definitely gonna try em out. Also got the gambler punch skirts to add if there on the skirted bite with the flapping daddy gold rush craws!
Love bama bug, green pumpkin with a hint of purple for any grass fishing followed by black and blue Mikey is the OG when it comes to punching Its the only reason I started to follow back in the day couldnt get enough 🔥🔥
The black/blue and green pumpkin combos are my go to. All I use down in Florida. If they are just nibbling at the beaver baits instead of taking it, I switch to the BB Cricket.
Andrew D said it all. love your channel love the tip on point your rod tip right at them when they’re stuck in the slop and They will come out .appreciate all the advice you give us don’t understand why UA-cam hates you oh truth hurts
man that penny wart is the bomb! especially next grass... and i also happen to throwing a zoom z-craw in that black and red on the wobble head i told you about... and! that bb cricket on a finesse set up is kinda a good to on rainbow (if you ever sneak up in the clear spring water.. you know its my jam!)
As per your recommendation I picked up some Gambler burner ctaws in green pumpkin with chartreuse claws and some Stingers in Cali 420 That's the colors the shop I went had so I went with them Can't wait to try em out
More great information! I'm not a big punch style fisherman, only cause I don't have confidence in my techniques. I'm going to give this a go! Thank you!
I appreciate your video and presentation method. No fluff!! My biggest issue is actually knowing WHEN to set the hook. I miss the fish more often than I should. Any suggestions?
Sometimes in those situations using a rod with a little more moderate taper so basically it has a longer Bend it's more parabolic will allow the rod to load up and let you know when you have a bite instead of always feeling for the tick
Great video, Mike. I cannot get any distance out of my flips. Rod is 7’10” heavy Bass Pro. 60 lb braid with fluro leader at 20 lb. I suspect it’s technique, but could be lure weight.
Noticed those were all some sort of creature /craw bait... I live in North central Florida... My question is are you always gonna go with a creature or craw style bait and when or would you ever flip straight tail or paddle tail worms??
How deep water is this under those mats? I fish in PA and the only thing that really mats up on my home lake are pads if you can call them mats. The hydrilla doesn't really mat up, maybe for a couple weeks tops every few years when we have a warm winter. I have trouble figuring that grass out because it kind of just chokes the water out most of the year rather than growing a mat to fish under. Gonna try flipping pads this week in 3-5' of water. Who knows how that will work but do you have any tips for the choked out hydrilla areas besides top water?
Mr. Ballz good stuff. you are definitely underrated with youtube and how much knowledge/experience you have. Plus your so in touch with how much of a douche that you are... that it makes you not "douchey" at all. Please keep fighting against the youtube algorithm so the gaygan squad circle jerk continues to void itself on my what to watch Playlist. You da man
I see a lot of video's where that only throw white collord baits yes white is ok in clear water but in staind or muddy water it's useless color plays a very key role in bass fishing
Im new to this game, been watching alot of videos. 1, I actually subscribed to see what your about and to see that fish U caught with LoJo, can't find it. 2, these baits U showing I have a couple and I thought theu mimicked Crawdads. Learn something new in different videos. GREAT VIDEO👍👍
Have you ever tried those miller punch weights? Little different design and a cool idea. I'm just not sure how I feel about a 1.5oz weight bending my line on every flip.
Hey Mikey I know you spent a lot of time on Guntersville and if this coronavirus thing settles out a little bit I'm going to be visiting with some friends in October. I'm wondering what your recommendation might be generally speaking for fishing the lake let's say the first or second week of October?
Got my cricket on son!3/4 sneak rig!i throw it on a 50lb braid setup w halo hfx 7ft3 med hvy to a 6.4to1 reel. My hvy flipping stick is a scott martin okuma matt daddy. I want that 711 hvy halo your using.w that tip to keep em pinned! Go MBRF 🎣
What size hook do you use for punching with a BB Cricket. I used a 5/0 today punching from the bank, and it seems way too big. The BB’s just fell apart. BUT I did catch a 4 pounder and a number of smaller ones. So what size hook makes sense? Great videos! Thanks!
i run a 4/0 hack attack usually but i have gone down to a 3/0 trokar if i'm just punching bb crickets and small creater baits. props on the 4 pounder!!!
@@mikeybalzz Thanks! I'll get a few of both and see how they work. I'm punching mats from shore on a little lake in the Arizona desert. While I've got you, what reel would you recommend? I'm using a G. Loomis E6X 7'6" HF, with 65LB Power Pro, with a Curado DC 151XG (8.5:1). Hauling them out with all that grass seems a little close to the limits of the drag on that reel. The fish get really stuck sometimes and without a boat it takes some effort to dig em out. Your videos were a HUGE help in understand the technique and what I'm trying to show the fish. Thanks again!!!
@@toddrathner 1) best reel for punching is no longer made - curado 200e. working to find a replacement reel since i can't get those anymore. playing around with a daiwa and going to play with some higher end shimano's as well. general rule now though is if it's less than $200 it won't hold up (kinda sad but that's just a reality). 2) i run a 4/0 hack attack hook (sorta wish they made a 3/0 but they don't)
Hey Mike, terrible question but inquiring minds and all of that... Has Bog ever snatched a fish? He sure likes tasting them. But serious business. I was gifted two extra heavy 7'6" rods, and I'll never be able to afford another rod and I want to punch this coming summer. What compensation do I need to make in my hookset to not lose a fish or rip it out of his mouth?
He’s been pretty close once or twice but other than that no you should be good with a 76 as long as it has a little bit of tip to it just don’t pull on them too hard if they get stuck
Great video, I gave it a dislike just for you! Helping throw that hate around😂and I know it doesnt matter to YT anyway. Seriously though as someone who's pretty much just getting into flipping and punching thicker vegetation this year this was a good one, along with the seemingly endless other videos you've made about the topic. Those monsters you catch down there motivate me and give me hope but we dont grow largies like that at all here in New York, I'm psyched about the 4 1/2 pounder I got useing the technique🤣 What we lack in largemouth we make up for in smallies though, I can't complain about anything being a mile from lake Ontario. Now I just really need to work on getting my bite to hookup ratio up, but at least it couldnt really go down lol
Mikey, I love you videos, but I wanna go back and touch on two things you mention in this vid: 1 - Why it works when you point the rod at the bass, when trying to get them out of vegetation. And, 2 - The claim that a longer rod gives you more leverage. It's no surprise that these two topics are related. First, the "leverage" topic. If you took Physics in high school, you learned a longer lever actually gives you LESS leverage (In this case, the rod is acting as a lever). If you don't believe me, take to rods of two different sizes, tie a large weight off the tip of each one, and try lifting it off the ground. A longer rod will be harder to lift, because you have less leverage. The nice trade-off is that the longer rod is going to take up line quicker, resulting in essentially a harder hookset. Now, as for pointing the rod. Well, when you do that, you are taking most of the leverage LOSS out of the rod and your hands. Because the rod is pointed straight at the fish (the resistance load), you're not working the lever (the rod) nearly as much, and are relying on the reel to winch the fish in. As you can see, both tipics are inter-related. Hope this made sense. Keep the awesome vids rolling!
I think you are wrong.I think the bass are eating crayfish in the vegetation but really it doesn't matter And I do love your videos and I do think they eat Frogs when frogs are fished :)
One of the best channels on UA-cam hands down. So underrated. Another video packed full of info
Thanks dude really appreciate that!!!!
you should give the tokyo rig a try punching mats, use 2 bullet weights 1 facing the hook and bottom one away from the hook!!!
THE best rig / bait / technique bass fishing breakdowns on youtube, period! Rock on brother!
Dunno man....tactical bassin is really in depth too
Love the humor you bring to the table, but the knowledge is outstanding bro!
🤙thx bro gotta keep it light.
Love that you have experience fishing up here in Wisconsin - thanks for your expertise!
Why have I only discovered this channel now! Dude this is awesome.
Great to see you return to straight up teaching. That is what made your channel so popular. Thanks

I don't think a fluoro leader is good. Too brittle especially spliced to braid and on a rod that tough
That intro was sick, love the vids
You tha man mickey.your videos are so helpful. Thanks brother
Thanks for watching bud!
That color of green pumpkin and purple has been paying off for me big time lately!
Your thoughts on using a red bead between the hook and the weight?
Liked the spanglish, keep up the good work, God bless and fish on

Wrong. White is a great color in stained or muddy water. Caught my p.b. on a white / chart / yellow blade bait in stained water.

Awsome Vid 👍. Thanks buddy
Love your channel so much. Are you throwing straight braid?
yup, many years ago i ran a leader and had a ton of issues breaking off. might experiment with it a again a bit though.
mikeybalzz fishing hey if it ain’t broke don’t fix it lol thanks for replying
Dang man you giving up dat juice! You sooo right! All day!
Thanks again 🤘
What do you think of okochobee craw? My favorite color!
great color = it's basically green pumpkin blue laminate.
mikeybalzz fishing you actually responded! By far my favorite UA-cam big man! Keep it up!
Do you stick your weights or let them slide?
Great info and 🤙🏽
