    I can tell you that those boxer craws are legit! Thanks for turning me on to those, Mikey! Excellent not only as a punching bait but also as a jig trailer when I'm flipping thick hydrilla.

    Im here in midwest and there is no waters around me that have weeds at all. I wish I could do some punching it looks like so much fun once you get to set the hook. That one on one combat in the thick grass.

    Dude you alone have helped me gain confidence with my jig, pitchin’ and punching game that they’ve become my favourite techniques. I do have a question though, why not peg your weights with a toothpick?

    I live up north so I never really flip like this. I always pick up a jig or something. Been flipping some lighter texas rigs around in some of the more grassy lakes around me. Will keep this video in mind

    My biggest challenge I have in Florida is finding a hydrilla mat that has the canopy. Too often I find the mats I am on are matted on the surface all the way to the lake bottom. I saw JT say that it was a challenge for him as well when fishing new areas.
    Any tricks in identifying a mat by appearance?

    • @mikeybalzz
      @mikeybalzz  Рік тому +3

      I just look for that roll effect when the hydro is laying flat across the surface not the tips just sticking out or anything like that it usually indicates that it's rolled over and then there's a canopy under it

    Wait wait wait... Something is wrong here. You're fishing with a $100 rod? I didn't think any one caught a fish on UA-cam on anything less than a $300-600 rod.
    the ree
    Yes, that was dripping with sarcasm. You just earned a sub.
    Real question about reels... What speed reel do you use for flipping? I have heard that the faster the reel the better. I've also heard that a it's not so much the reel but the rod and line. Thoughts?

    • @mikeybalzz
      @mikeybalzz  11 місяців тому

      7 speed or faster. Makes you more efficient and also helps you to make up for fish that run out with the bait before you’re able to catch up with them

    Mikey, do you ever tie a leader on your braided line for flipping? Is it necessary? Thanks

    • @mikeybalzz
      @mikeybalzz  Рік тому +2

      I don't I used to way way back and I think it gets more bites however I had a lot of leader failures so I either go straight flouro or straight braid.

    Great instructional, Mikey! I've flipped some heavy lily pads here in MN the last couple years with a 7' MH, and tho I had some success with a couple 5 pounders, always felt under-armed. Bought a 7'6" Heavy Spiralite Maverick this spring, so I'm ready! Hope my 50lb braid is stout enough! Love your videos, man.

    How often do you go fishing where you don’t film?

    • @mikeybalzz
      @mikeybalzz  Рік тому

      At this point practically never. I only get 2 days a week to shoot videos so I gotta capitalize. Did fish the derby no cams which was a nice little break.

    • @astrophysicistguy
      @astrophysicistguy Рік тому

      @@mikeybalzz hmmm … kinda sounds like work 😬. However, it says a lot about your ability that you can have all the distractions of trying to film and still catch fish every time when you go out. I have no excuses like that, fish only one body of water and still struggle every time to even catch one or two. I guess maybe i just need to switch to shiner fishing like everyone here …

    • @mikeybalzz
      @mikeybalzz  Рік тому

      @@astrophysicistguy trust me there's a lot more failure than success on my end. that's the game though, you gotta take risks and sacrifice time to try stuff and alot of times it just doesn't work out. sometimes getting on some different lakes helps though man, might be worth mixing it up. there's been many times i'll pick up on some tweak on one lake i would've missed on another because it set up differently and then i'll reapply it and have some success. it's just good to keep mixing it up both how you fish and where.

    • @astrophysicistguy
      @astrophysicistguy Рік тому

      @@mikeybalzz Yeah, that’s something I should probably start doing. What’s the worst that can happen? I won’t catch anything there either … lol. I think my biggest issue is mental. I’m retired so I could literally go fishing every day but because when I go I never really catch anything I don’t feel like going all the time. It’s a real catch 22. I ‘force’ myself to go at least once a week regardless but at that pace its slow going. And the really sad part is I was actually quite ‘top tier’ blue water fisherman and even ran my own tuna/marlin charter business for a few years & have 2 world record yelowfins - one record still stands today. I was bass fishing in Texas & Ca in the 80s and then stopped that & up until 3 years ago had not done any bass fishing in 29 years. For some reason I’m really struggling trying to figure out Florida and let’s face it, other than you there is no one on YT talking about Florida fishing even remotely so I’m left trying to figure it out on my own …😂. Well maybe I should do less whining here and just go fishing … lol. Thx for all the advise. You’ve definitely helped me journey back …

    • @mikeybalzz
      @mikeybalzz  Рік тому

      @@astrophysicistguy FL is a weird deal man. check out my buddy bradley maqueen he's been putting some vids up on yt from okeechobee and they're super raw and the dude is a hammer. might be a good resource. the other thing that i do when i get in a funk is totally change stuff up. sounds easier said the done though. basically i;ll go to the lake and not allow myself to fish anything i've already caught fish on and i'll also focus on casting style baits so i don't get caught up flipping the tiniest thing for hours. basically the mindeset is if something looks cool and i havne't fished it or i haven't fished it with a certain bait i'll try it. the cool part is the worse that can happen is you don't catch jack and when you know that can be the case it almost takes the worry away. the best thing that can happen is you figure out some little tweak and develop it. it's very clean slate fishing.
