Emblaser Pro video information and preorder: darklylabs.com/?aff=3
In this video, I'm going to show you how to trace your own artwork using Lightburn. There are a lot of great advantages to using LightBurn over other software when it comes to vector tracing and getting Lightburn to trace images.
Vector tracing is more accurate than other methods because the software within Lightburn is designed specifically for vector graphics - It can trace any type of image, not just photos and you don't need an expensive license or secondary piece of software like Adobe products to get great results.
I'll also show you some shortcuts and tricks that will make things easier for you and finish with a product you can create yourself when practising these techniques using Lightburn to trace images.

Superior communicator here, well worth watching this video and saving the link for future review.
Awesome! Always helpful and great!
Excellent video just what I was looking for, thank you very much.
Thank you very much for taking the time to make these videos. Us newbies would have a hard time learning without people like you. Your time is greatly appreciated and I might have the right to speak for all newbies on here. I have also joined your Facebook group in hopes of finding a helping hand when needed.
Again, thank you very much for giving us newbies your time and well made videos.
Welcome, and thank you for the feedback. LOve hearing that people are learning and trying something new.
Love to see what you create. Catch us on the Livestream and share your journey! :)
Thanks Gil, Love this feature of lightburn. Top video very informative as usual. 🎆
Too kind Stuart 🙏 Thank you and I love seeing your work on the Laser Livestream :)
Thanks. Very informative. I have found tracing in Lightburn is easier and sometimes better than in dedicated graphic programs.
Excellent explanation of this subject, thanks for the video
You are totally welcome Andrew. What are you planing to use the amazing trace function in Lightburn to create with your laser? Always interested to hear how Lightburn users create with the tools available, and if yo want to share images, hit us up on the Facebook page! :)
Great tutorial Gil.I also like the trace option
Thanks Gerald 🙏 What kind of things have you made with the trace function and your laser?
Thank you very much !!!!!!!!
Great video!
Thanks Jeff. Bow that you understand Lightburn's trace function, what are you planing to make with it on your laser?
Hey Gil, just found your channel. i have been lasering for about 10 months and absolutely love it. This video fits in perfectly with a project im trying to do. I have a customer that hand drew some art work and i just can not seem to get it cleaned up. This video seems to be the ticket for cleaning up the image. The image has a million nodes. I 'm going to ty this today and see if i can get it cleaned up. Thank you or your videos. Jim in Idaho USA
Great to hear Jim! Welcome aboard :)
Thanks for letting me know that the tutorial is a help with a job your working on. I'm interested to see if you can optimise the node count and still get the hand drawn image working. If you could share your results with us on the Laser Livestream facebook group, that would be awesome! The link is in the description. Very exciting :)
@@LaserLivestream will do I will take a few screen shots as I go
right click, edit pic, trace image, also works
You earned my SUB!
Thank you. Glad the tutorial was helpful. What have you created with the trace tool in Lightburn?
🙂@@LaserLivestream Almost any image with defined outlines can be traced easily.
Hey Gil, just learning and trying to bring in images. I dont understand all the different types of files such as png or svg etc. I only use lightburn on the Otur lasermaster 20w. when trying to copy an image from the internet, what files should I be looking for or which is a better file type. thank you for a great video. The comments are also informative.
File types like JPG and PNG are raster image files (made up of little pixels). SVG is a vector image file (made up of lines). If you want to make trace like the tutorial, look for high-resolution JPG or PNG files. Sometimes they are compressed for placement on the WWW, so look for large files when you do a google search (You can choose "Large" files on the search options).
If you can find an SVG file,. use that as you can scale it up and down without having to trace the image. In fact, running a trace turns your image into a vector, just like an SVG!
Let me know how you go, and I would love it if you could share with me your results on the Laser Livestream Facebook group: facebook.com/groups/laserlivestream
Thank you for the informative video. Do you have any pics of things like this you actually cut so us newbies can see what it would look like when using line vs fill vs cut?
Thanks for the feedback. If you check out some of the past Laser Livestreams, we show a number of projects that use traced images and the results after processing on a laser.
Let me know if you would like a comprehensive rundown on the different modes as a tutorial. :)
Hey man, you could show us how to make it multilayered from what you created. That would be amazing.
Gill, off topic…. Is there a way to neutralize burnt wood smell? (Please say yes!)
Btw, great show every😊 time! Thank you.
Im trying to trace a.patterm that I have drawn myself in lightburn, but it's showing double lines in places.
Do you have a video that shows glass etching on the Fox Alien Resizer??? Thank you Frank
Hi Frank. You are going to have to help me out here. Fox Alien Resizer?
Ha! So, I learned something new after all - the possibility to make a sub-selection when tracing - cool, thanks, Gil.
It may be easier to focus on this if the music is completely muted off.
Great vid, thanks!
Glad i was able to show you something new! :)
When I try to insert or copy+paste image or clipart, the image is gray! What am I doing wrong?
Thank you for your videos!
I would love to see a video of the process, rather than a history or i like doing it this way. Short to the point.
Gil, good presentation. I hate to say this because it is so picky, but if you would turn off the traverse lines on the preview it would be easier to see the end product. Also all those scan lines tell me you are not using the "Fill shapes individually" function on the cut settings editor. By using that function you can save a lot of burning time. I don't mean to be critical, just trying to help out.
Not a problem at all. I will be covering those features in a future video, just wanted to create what someone would experience “out of the box” 📦 :)
Incredibly valuable information. Thank you.
ff topic question.
Running macOS using supplied cable using an USB-A to USB-C adapter. Xtool D1 10 w
The only software that connects is XTool Creative Space. It runs on this software.
I am unable to get so lightburn or laser box software to discover D1. Kind of weird seeing how laser box and creative space is the same developer. I think. any help would be appreciated.
Very nice, what font did you use for the logo?
I believe that one is called NASA... I like it as it emulates the old NASA worm font used in the 70's... :)
can you do a trace say of a fish for an engraving and set it to cut the perimeter of the fish . so you will then have a fish shape as your picture and the body is laser engraved. I'm sure there is a way to do this if so can you show us please.Thank you so much.
You can ungroup everything and then select the out line of shape that you want to cut. Once that is selected, you select the setting to cut. Everything else should remain as engrave. Once that's done, you select all and group again.
Hello Gil,
Can you tell me how to engrave an image and cut the design uit after engraving it ?
Hi Emiel, I think I know what your asking, but if this is not what your looking for, let me know. You can put a border around your image using the offset tools in Lightburn, or manually create one using the shape tools. Then cut the border on a seperate layer set to cut. Let me know how that works out!
@@LaserLivestream Thanks i will show when i am ready
Does LightBurn accept SVG files from CorelDraw or AI?
Yes, LightBurn does accept SVG files, which means you can use SVG files created in CorelDraw or Adobe Illustrator (AI). Just save your designs in these programs as SVG files, and then you can import them directly into LightBurn for your laser projects. What are you planning to work on that involves designs from CorelDraw or AI? 🎨🖌️💻
Idk if this works on mac but if you click and hold the middle button. "scroll wheel" you can move across the grid instead of zooming out then back in.
Great tip, I will try it the next time. Don't tell anyone, but when I make my tutorials, all my USB ports are taken up and I actually use mt trackpad. I'll see if your tip translates to the trackpad as well. Thank you 🙏
@@LaserLivestream Get a bluetooth mouse, no need for a dongle or or cables or a free usb port.
@@ditto767 Great suggestion 👍 I think Santa 🎅 might have read your mind!
Thanks Gil. I love your videos.
I’m new to lightburn and I want to draw a rope. Can someone help me?
Hey JL, thanks for joining us here.
First, what do you need the rope to be doing in your image?
@@LaserLivestream
I need a circle rope and sometimes curved ropes on some logos
at 12.41 of the video you removed the outer layer - what command did you use.
At that time mark, I did not remove anything from the logo on the workbench, what I did was centre the work area by hitting Zoom to Page (Ctrl + O).
Hope that helps!
Definr " VECTORS"
How eouldvit engrave? All i want to know is how to actually trace a object and not the inside?
@Michele Riondino Your welcome! 👍
I still do not understand the value of all this. What piece of work can you use all this for?
How do I save vector
I'll create a vtutorial and walk you through the steps. Keep watching :)
Interesting but too much waffel
Too many adds otherwise great info.
I agree. I wish UA-cam would stop adding them into my videos. :(
This is super easy, but what would be really interesting to see something more complex. Little bit disappointing video
Sometimes people need to walk before they run. :) How about you send me a image you think is more complex and I'll see what I can do to create a tutorial that wont disappoint?
