I've used it mostly as a hobby machine, but I've outgrown it. I've especially been frustrated by the online component. I think I'll be ordering the Nova 35/100W soon.
Great question. On a thunder laser when you turn air assist off it really means low volume air. You never want allot of air flow when engraving. High air just pushes the vaporized material back on your work. I engrave with a whisper of air. Much cleaner work off the laser.
Thank you so much!! I appreciate the time you've taken to share these videos; I'm moving from a Glowforge to the Nova 24 + Lightburn and your videos are accelerating me being table to create "all the things!"
GREAT JOB ON THE VIDEO, THANK YOU FOR THE INFORMATION, I GOT A LASER ABOUT A MONTH AGO, I HAVE BEEN PLAYING AROUND ON CARDBOARD (FROM BOXES CUT UP), AND IT TOOK ME SOME TIME, PLAYING WITH THE SETTINGS, I WILL TRY LESS LINES, I INCREASED THE LINES ITS VERY DARK AND THE DETAIL IS NOT AS GOOD AS A BIT LOWER ON THE LINES, IM USING LASER GBRL, I IN THE PROCESS OF LEARNING LIGHTBURN, YES LIGHTBURN DOES HAVE A LOT OF FEATURES BUT IT A BIG LEARNING CURVE, LASER GBRL IS VERY EASY TO USE, I DO LIKE LASER GBRL A LOT BECAUSE ITS EASY TO USE, AND IT DOES NOT TAKE LONG TO GET THE FEEL OF THE SOFTWARE, IT TOOK ME ABOUT 2 HOURS TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO ENGRAVE AN IMAGE WITH LIGHTBURN, IT TOOK ABOUT 15 TO 20 MINUTES TO ENGRAVING AN IMAGE(THATS DOING CHANGES TO THE IMAGE AND THHE SET UP ON LASER GBRL), I FOUND THAT CARDBOARD IS A GREAT PRACTICE, IT TEACHES HOW NOT TO OVER POWER THE LASER, I HAVE A COUPLE OF IMAGES THAT SLIGHTLY BURNED THROUGH, WHATS REALLY NICE WITH CARDBOARD, IF YOU SCREW UP OR WANT TO PLAY AROUND WITH DIFFERENT SETTING AND IT DOES NOT WORK OUT, ITS EASY TO DISPOSE OF THE MISTAKE, I AM AMAZED HOW GREAT THINGS CAN LOOK ON CARDBOARD, I HAVE MANY DIFFERENT IMAGES I HAVE USED AND THEY LOOK LIKE A BLACK AND WHITE PHOTO PRINTED ON CARDBOARD, I KNOW I HAVE A LOT MORE TO LEARN, I AM ABOUT READY TO MOVE FROM CARDBOARD TO TILE, METALS, 4MM ACRYLIC CLEAR SHEETS, GLASS, WOOD, SO I GOT A LOT OF WORK, RUNNING TEST, AND MUCH MORE, I HAVE FOUND HOW INTERESTING IT IS HOW MANY DIFFERENT MATERIALS AND ITEMS CAN BE ENGRAVED, AND THE MANY WAYS THINGS CAN BE ENGRAVED WITH THE LASER, IT SEEMS IT DOES NOT MATER IF YOU HAVE A 3 WATT LASER OR A 1000 WATT LASER THE END RESULTS CAN BE GREAT TO AWESOME, ONCE AGAIN THANK YOU FOR THE INFORMATION

I appreciate your videos because it not only teaches me light burn but also how to go get the most out of my engraver! Thank you so much for your prompt reply
What sander are you using? And is the disk a soft, fluffy material? (At least that's how it looks.) Would it be possible in your videos to post links to any of the tools, etc. that you use in the video? Like you listed the hold down pins?
I can't seem to make accurate circles for ornaments. Do you have any suggestions? The w and h are the same size, the belts are tight (however, the right side seems to be just so slightly not as tight and every time I try to tighten it, the belt comes off track..) I have a Atzer 10P. Love learning from you. Thank you for all your videos
Try using the Calibrate tool in Lightburn. It's under the Edit, Machine Settings, Calibrate Axis (button). Here is a great video in detail explaining it. It's easiest to do with squares but it will make your circles better as well ua-cam.com/video/v8kOH5McCjY/v-deo.html
What do you mean by defocus your lens? Do you raise or lower the bed a bit? I read the comments and I appear to be the only one asking a dumb question.
Defocus means if normal focus distance is 6mm Defocusing the lens would be 7-8mm this makes the laser beam bigger providing a softer look. I do this with engraving all the time
@@computercreationz What about when you want to engrave and cut in the same run of a laser? Cutting with defocused lens don't give wanted results. On my chinese laser i have to do defocus manually and that's why i am afraid of non-precise cutting and/or engraving.
@@matijajereb3564 in lightburn you can automatically have your z come up after you engrave. This is a very advanced move. Or do engrave then refocus and cut easy!
@@computercreationz My laser doesn't support Z axis. I think i'll have to try to do it manually. I'll have to be careful and pay extra attention on positioning. Am i right? Anyway, thanks for the reply.
Hey there, what are you using to get the 7mm focus measurement? Also, are you engraving a bunch of an item, then refocusing at 6mm for the cut or cutting at 7mm as well?
I appreciate your experience and willingness to share that knowledge. You are showing different setting for different results which makes sense. My question is I am using a Xtool D1 10w and as long as I am using Lightburn software I should be able to use your information, correct? (Yes, I am a newbie!)
Some of what I talk about will apply to a co2 laser and not diode laser. since I don’t have a diode laser I am not sure what will or will not apply. thank you for your comments and watching
Rick, I use an Ortur laser at 5 watts output. I inadvertantly did not check my focus and engraved a coaster out of focus. Wow, much better, just like he describes. I now use it when appropriate. I did not consider the lines per inch though. I think I can knock of 10 seconds more with this info.
yes, I don’t like it, it will stop engraving right in the middle of a frame and jump around they go back and when it does it leaves artifact’s. from what I understand it designed for diode lasers that are slower.
@@computercreationz Thanks! I have only ever engraved wood using a diode, so having this thunder laser is going to be a whole new ballgame for me. How do you select the types of wood you use to cut, and where do you purchase it in sheets? Thanks!
@@joshuas5504 I too came from a diode laser, they do great engraving just very slow! You will love your Thunder laser. Top quality Baltic birch is a great place to start, don’t buy fro the big box stores they sell wood for construction not laser use and you will hate it. Maple and cherry hardwood is awesome as well but expensive. All substrates are a little pricey now but what isn’t. Enjoy your new laser!
could you please try the settings"fill groups together" in cut settings with the parameters of the 2: 00 minute result? .I wonder if this makes a difference because you have much empty space in the engraving.Would be nice to compare the estimated times.
When I do a circle engrave I figure how thick I want my line then draw the circle and use the offset function on the toolbar on the left to make the line as thick I would like. I then set this to a line layer. When the laser engraves it the head just goes in a circle continuously until it is engraved. The thing about it is that the laser is firing all the time instead of so much dead time as it scans back and forth. Now I'd bet he could knock another 35 to 40 seconds off the time on those ornaments. I have a diode laser so I really can't be sure about the time savings on a co2 laser.
@@krisknowlton5935 I do that too - any solidly marked borders become say 5 or 7 vectors with minute offsets, and they get done in a minute fraction of the time from a raster.
@@ianstewart-koster9982 and now I use the 'Offset fill' function. It does what we were doing manually automatically. In other words, if you want a border that is 3 mm wide just make your two border lines 3mm apart (make sure they are on a separate layer) then select 'Offset Fill'. LightBurn does the tedious work for you. I wish I had tried that function out sooner because it would have saved me a lot of design time and I wouldn't have looked like a dummy. Jason has packed a lot into LightBurn. The more you use it, the more you discover. I just wish all this was around when I was a young man because then I would have known what I wanted to do when I grew up.
So increase speed and power?... lol.. seems obvious that by doing that it would burn faster. Do you have an air assist? My burns are sooo much cleaner and i do 300-500 lpi..
Question about defocusing. How do you handle that when most times an engraving is combined with cutting? I would expect these ornaments also get cut out. Are you running that job totally separately?
Cant these machines follow exactly what that are going to engrave like someone putting the pen to paper or like plasma cutting Seems like the time wasted is them going over space that will not be engraved

Hi just want to know which lens you use
I use the 1.5” from American photonics most of the time. it has a smaller beam spot than the standard 2”
I appreciate your videos because it not only teaches me light burn but also how to go get the most out of my engraver! Thank you so much for your prompt reply
Can you share the link for the 1.5" lens or part number please
Would this technique work on a 20w laser?
not if it’s a diode laser
Can’t you use golf tees to fix the board in position?
the golf tees won’t hold in my honeycomb the holes ads too big
What sander are you using? And is the disk a soft, fluffy material? (At least that's how it looks.) Would it be possible in your videos to post links to any of the tools, etc. that you use in the video? Like you listed the hold down pins?
I use the Festool brand sanders. there expensive but last a lifetime.
Great content
thank you for the comment! I appreciate it
Thanks Robert
my pleasure, thank you!
Do these settings work on Nova24
yes I used these processes on my. nova 24 before I sold it for my 35-100. setting will be different for each laser for sure
Thank you for all your videos
belt tension can be tricky and greatly affect your results. safely I haven’t done any belt maintenance on my laser. sorry. thank you for the comments
I tried ordering the hold down tips, but it says it doesn't ship to Canada,, 😔
oh man, that’s no good. I’m sure someone will come up with something up there
How was the result how that’s it look?
I’m sorry I don’t understand your question?
Thankyou 👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧!
Our pleasure!
merry christmas to you, nice hat btw
Thanks, you too! ya with the white beard I look like some one else I know. lol
Where do you purchase your lumber?
I have a hardwood store about 60 miles from me. I stay away from the box box store wood.
Hey there, what are you using to get the 7mm focus measurement? Also, are you engraving a bunch of an item, then refocusing at 6mm for the cut or cutting at 7mm as well?
I made a stepped focus gauge, if it’s 1/8” I don’t worry about refocusing. if it’s 1/4” or more I re focus before I start the cut layer
Thanks.
You're welcome
Thanks
your welcome
Do you ever use flood fill robert?
yes, I don’t like it, it will stop engraving right in the middle of a frame and jump around they go back and when it does it leaves artifact’s. from what I understand it designed for diode lasers that are slower.
@@computercreationz cant thank you enough for another great video. I just ordered my thunder laser a few days ago. Excited!
@@joshuas5504 congrats on your order, you will love that laser!
I believe that would actually add time. The circle engrave still has to be performed, you're actually saving time engraving letters on the way across
@@gearhed1971 might be,and i guess the stress on the drivetrain increases
You totally misunderstood the video!
@computercreationz i didnt misunderstand it at all
Question about defocusing. How do you handle that when most times an engraving is combined with cutting? I would expect these ornaments also get cut out. Are you running that job totally separately?
It depends on how thick your material is. If it’s 1/8” I will do both without re focusing. Thicker I may choose to run separately
🙏🏽 thanks
You’re welcome 😊
Cant these machines follow exactly what that are going to engrave like someone putting the pen to paper or like plasma cutting Seems like the time wasted is them going over space that will not be engraved
Not sure I understand your statement. These lasers engrave exactly where your svg lines are illustrated. De focus is for darker engraving
Yes but fiber laser don’t work well on wood!
I like you Robert .Thank you very much.Visit me if you want to come İzmir, Turkey
thanks for the comment! and the invite
I have a sub $300 generic Chinese engraver that has a low power diode. I appreciate your videos because it not only teaches me lightburn but also how go get the most out of my engraver! Thank you for taking the time to produce these videos!
I appreciate your comments. I started with an inexpensive diode laser and that’s what got me started on this crazy journey!
Thanks!
Thank you Chad the the donation! appreciate it
Thanks
