@@90aaronfrancis Is she though? All I have seen are two sides saying one thing and others saying another. In fact, training to be a samurai was started at a very young age (historical fact). So the question becomes was he a samurai in title or practice? Plus, most stories surrounding him are believed to be just that stories and not historical documents. To me it seems there is a lack of evidence to prove it either way.

There is also no evidence he was a Samurai. Instead, he was there for 15 months. Not nearly enough time to become a Samurai.
What the fuck are you talking about? Yasuke WAS a samurai and there was an absolute metric ton of evidence to support that fact. Him being a samurai is universally agreed upon by any and all historians worth their salt. Stop spreading misinformation.

So what’s your point? These games aren’t really historical and I love these games. I believe an assassin’s creed World War II didn’t happen. It was a ploy between the Templars and assassins or was it a ploy between Winston, Churchill, Hitler, and FDR who all had apples of Eden. that is canon in the games who cares at that point

Those who dislike the idea of Yusuke as the main protagonist of the medieval japan iteration of the series are making a mistake when claiming he wasn't a samurai.
Not because it's real or not, but because it doesn't matter.

As a diehard AC fan, I would like to ask Ubisoft a question. How come there are 0 h o e s in AC Mirage? Kassandra/Alexios is a h o e, Eivor (both versions) are h o es, but in Mirage everyone is so chaste and proper including the protagonist, why's that? Yasuke was in Japan for 3 years. He was a retainer that carried the sword of his host when walking the streets. Almost nobody in Japan knows of him.
The only actual foreign Samurai was an Englishman. He wanted to leave Japan but was too valuable to the Shogunate and so they continually gave him more honors. He eventually had his own castle and was chief translator. There is a statue of him and most Japanese know his name.

Wrong. Yasuke is a well known figure in Japanese culture. As there have been several different anime about him. He's literally the inspiration for Afro Samurai. But go ahead and say no one in Japan knows who Yasuke is.

Yusuke is either servant or slave when Yasuke was given as a gift to one of war lords, Nobunaga Oda in feudalistic Japan, not imperialistic Japan. Japan was divided into over 300 states with war lords in each state and fighting each others while tennoh which is often falsely translated as emperor sat in Kyoto and had no real power but authority to appoint bureaucratic positions like Shogun, top commander of all war lords. Yusuke was used for entertainment to other warriors and war loads and for sumo wrestling. There is no record that he actually fought in wars as warriors. Yasuke may have been allowed to wear armor shield gear but there is no record. Since Japanese was a nation of Buddhism and Shintoism mix, sexuality was very much free any time in Japan’s history and the existence of gay and lesbian were pretty much accepted as air and almost never been discriminated until Christianity and (LGB)TQ ideology were imported into Japan as transgender and Queer hentai started causing problems in Japan. Some of war lords were bisexual who enjoyed female looking male in war time and enjoyed real female in peace time.
Yasuke was probably not a gay or bisexual or transgender. It is totally inappropriate to make this figure as warrior hero or gay or bisexual. He was simply one of the first black man recorded in history of Japan.
Former Israel ambassador, Eli Cohen advocated Japanese may have rooted back Jews as there were some similarities. Interesting to see the similar advocacy from black people who claim that native Americans rooted back to Africa. Perhaps mentality of understanding history is similar
I want to agree with what you said, but I think some of your information is wrong. Yasuke probably was used for entertainment but he wasn't a pet for Nobunaga (I know you didn't say this but just saying for anyone who thinks otherwise), and it is more plausible he has seen war since he was there when Nobunaga committed seppuku. It also mentions that he was fighting by Nobutada's side until Nobutada was killed. By all means correct me if I'm wrong but I'm sure he fought in at least 2 battles against Akechi, and has seen front row seats of two armies fighting one another (even if he didn't participate since he would be by Nobunaga's side at all times)
Kaneko Hiraku (professor at the Historiographical Institute of the University of Tokyo, the most prestigious historical research institution in Japan) includes in his book below, paired with the translation in Thomas Lockley's book (which is correct): The meaning of the word stipend is not supposed to prove Yasuke was a samurai all by itself. What proves Yasuke was a samurai is not that he received a samurai stipend, but that he received a samurai stipend and carried Nobunaga's weapons which was usually the job of a koshō and koshō were samurai and had and fought with a katana at Nijō and he was mobilized and followed Nobunaga on the Takeda campaign of 1582 and remained by Nobunaga's side even after Nobunaga dismissed all his "ordinary soldiers". zephaniah 3:10
Western people may think anyone can fight like samurai warriors but it is fantasy like Ninja Turtles. There are only few records mentioned on Yasuke and two of them written some years later. If Yasuke had been allowed to be samurai warrior, he would have been given last name by Nobunaga but he did not receive any last name. All samurai have last name or are given last name by war lords or Tennoh to start his clan. Only Tennoh successors of japanese tennoh royal family do not have last name in Japan since Tennoh successors are the origin of all Japanese people and they do not need to have last name to distinguish the rest of Japanese. Tennoh successors never have had last names in 2600 years of Japanese history. Yasuke was added to Nobunaga’s Kosho member who were his servants help him around and protect Nobunaga as well as his sleeping partner some times. Kosho check his meal for poison by eating for him first, help Nobonaga getting dressed, and so on. Yasuke was holding Nobunaga’s personal stuffs like fan, pen, whatever war lord needs by him. Kosho may become guards and then samurai warriors when they become adults or war lord want someone younger. Yasuke was Kosho all time when he appeared on records. He followed Nobunaga to Koshu war as Kosho, not as samurai warriors. When Nobonaga was attacked by Akeichi at Honnohji, he ran away to inform Nobutada, Nobunaga’s son at Nijohjo where Akechi also attacked and Nobunaga’s son fought and killed himself for honor. Yasuke may have resisted but he surrendered to Akechi. Nobobuga was said to kill himself for honor, instead of being decapitated by enemy force but his body never recovered. If Yasuke was samurai warriors, he would have killed himself to protect his honor from allowing enemy to decapitate but Yasuke surrendered. Yasuke was not allowed to wear long sword Tachi, katana but instead allowed to wear Kodachi, short knife that even samurai wives and daughters would have, which shows Yasuke was not samurai warriors. When Yasuke surrendered, Akechi did not decapitate him but Akechi released Yasuke by saying Yasuke, black slave who was given to Nobunaga like animal by white man do not know anything and he is not Japanese or samurai should be released. 黒奴は動物で何も知らず、また日本人でもない故、これを殺さず.
If Yasuke had caused any damage to Akechi’s force, Akechi would have killed him. If Yasuke had been samurai, Yasuke must have killed himself for honor or Akechi must have decapitated for respect for enemy as it is the rule of samurai. Yasuke was released because he was not samurai warriors.
Yasuke was most likely a slave and Nobunaga saved him because it was an entertaining and he paid him so that he could live. Black slave who could not speak Japanese and had no skill as samurai but perhaps some skill as servant so Nobunaga hired him as servant. Kosho is not samurai warriors.
The propaganda that Yasuke was samurai is spreading like wildfire and the exact the same claim in comment section can be found in Reddit by using cherry picking and falsely translating from Hiraku Kaneko 金子拓 possible theory in a way of propaganda. If you want to know what Hiraku Kaneko is truly saying, you need to read his book in Japanese and you will know Kaneko never wrote book about Yasuke since Yasuke only appeared three times with a few sentence in Japanese history. I'm Japanese. Yasuke was NOT samurai. Samurai was a high rank bushi. To become a bushi, you need at least surname (clan name). NO records say he was a retainer, Kosho, bushi or samurai. There a record that he was carrying tools sometime. No record says he was a sword bearer. So a lot of Japanese are mad at Ubisoft falsifying our history just to use a black man for feudal Japan setting against the custom of AC series.
Seems like folks keep downgrading what he was. So I’ll just stop the puck at Kosho since no record says otherwise.

@@TheShockVox No. In Sengoku period, samurai hired many peasants as soldiers for wars. Most peasant soldiers were called 農兵 or 雑兵 and not even bushi. Some peasant soldiers became 足軽 Ashigaru and got registered as bushi depending on the region but Ashigaru was mostly "half-bushi and half-farmer" before Nobunaga's 兵農分離. Ashigaru was also called 雑兵 Zohyo. 雑兵 (農兵 and 足軽) who fought for the lord were never called samurai. In Shincho Koki 信長公記, Samurai and Zohyo were distinguished from each other. Samurai was not just anyone who fought for the lord. And they never called anyone who just got caught in an incident a samurai.

The misinformation is crazy. Ubisoft has said nothing about making Yasuke or the other MC gay or “LGBT”. The rumor comes from a fake photoshopped IGN tweet and liberal news sites misinterpreting a community update for the game which mentions nothing about either of the main character sexualities. It just says “Naoe and Yasuke’s disparate personalities also lead them to have different relationships and rapports with other characters, and they don’t always feel the same way about people, nor do people always feel the same way about them. Romantically, they will also attract and be attracted to different types of people. Through the pair, players will get to experience a multitude of relationships.” if you want to interpret that as them being gay, that’s on you.

CD Projekt Red did the same with the charact of V in Cyberpunk 2077. You make the character and play the character however you wanted.

To be fair, this Assassin’s Creed is an RPG. If it’s similar to Odyssey and Valhalla, the player chooses either the male or female character (or both in Valhalla and Shadows). The player can then choose who they want to romance, be it male or female, and decide who the character is interested in. I would assume Shadows would be the same where the character is only gay if you want them to be

I’m just gonna say, this has been happening since ac odyssey and ac Valhalla, its a romance option with both male and females, since 2018. You can reject it as its not required and optional, I feel like many have not played ac games and jump to conclusions.

the only way Im ever playing another Ubisoft game is if I download it for free. Ubisoft will never get my money again. if I could return all the games I bought from them and get my money back, I would do it. I dont want to support this company ever again.
This was going to be the first AC game I’ve bought in over a decade. So much for that.
So, Assassins Creed games have always allowed you to romance anyone - regardless of gender - just to give the player options and allowing the player to decide if the character was gay, straight, etc. If this is the first character that can ONLY have gay romances, I’d say that would be a very strange divergence from a successful path indeed.
As a former Ubisoft fan with nostalgia for the originals before they went mobile game cash-grabby let me tell ya.. this game is going to flop so hard it'll make their heads spin. This is a setting we had been asking for for over a decade and they pull out this slop. Ubisoft is a walking corpse at this point, it's just a matter of time.
