- Being as lanky as Conor is, it’s always been difficult to get a bike that fits properly. With standard 700c wheels, he looks like he’s on a child’s bike, but finding something more appropriate is challenging to say the least.
So instead of looking for someone else to do it for him, Conor went away and designed his own bike around a set of huge 36 inch wheels he managed to find. This absolute monster of a machine would make anyone else look like an infant, but it fits Conor perfectly, so Hank decided to put him to the test on a “social” ride.

At 6’6 I’d have one for the Saturday club run, no hesitation.
with 29 inch inseam I don't think pedaling would work out. But I might have a go at coasting down some stairs on it
29" should be the sweetspot for me although i am an e mountainbiker with a 29er
As a 194cm I would like a big bike but unfortunately last time I have a 29" MTB, I had killed the center of the back wheel tree times (130kg +stairdown not working).

I'm 6 feet 0. Why not make the wheels 50 inches so when you wreck it hurts more... Thing looks ridiculous.

The weird bit is that the 36" wheels actually look proper and proportional to Connor.
To me the sweet spot for Connor would have been a 32er. Obviously, though it's finding the wheels or getting them built... and even more so finding tyres. But, for shock and awe value, and to see how much Connor loves El Alto.... BRILLIANT!
I feel like 'El Alto' should be how Conor refers to himself in the third person throughout this video.

You need to watch "Road Bike Party" by Martyn Ashton. 2 and 3 are on GMBN, the first is on his own channel.
If a bike can handle Paris-Roubaix, it should be able to handle this.
However, many manufacturers state weight limits and maximum drop or jump heights for their carbon frames. No joke!
At 6'6", I've always wondered why I have to ride on the same size wheels as someone a foot or more shorter. I'd REALLY like to try this thing out. Maybe it's a little too big? Great, I'd love to ride something a little too big.
Mountain bikes abandoned the 26” wheel a decade ago, road bikes still cling to this tiny wheel.

Measure one, 700x23 is 26.25”. The road bike industry needs to adopt a 686mm rim. (The 32” existing size) With a 32mm tire it would measure 29.25”. Perfect for bigger riders or a road conversion for mountain bikes.

In Spanish it can either be “the tall guy”, or also “the top of the climb”, as when you reach the summit.

El Alto is a beast! The wheel size matches the rider. We recently got a full custom steel frame gravel bike for my 4 ft 10 inch wife from Rodriguez custom cycles in Seattle. It's 26x2.1 inch wheels, thru axles, SRAM apex 10-42t, 38t absolute black oval chainring, KS external dropper post integrated into the left shifter, it's awesome. Don't remember the geo off the top of my head but it's super tiny. Fits the rider.

THE STEPS were truly epic. The song at the end was epic. And the Frodo and Gandalf were epic. Therefore, this is the most epic ride GCN has ever done. Great and hilarious vid guys!

36 inch (and more recently, 32 inch) are common sizes for unicycles. I've owned three 36 inch unis and have covered substantial distances on them. I would have thought the handling of such a big front wheel on a bike would be rather slow. What Hank needs is a Moulton space frame upsized for 700c wheels. :)

@@laszlozoltan5021 My personal best was just over 50 Km on the road without a dismount (deliberate or accidental). However, people I used to know did Lands Emd to John o'Groats (entire length of mainland Britain (around 900 miles) a few years ago.
@@luukrutten1295 The original Coker button tread 36 inch tyre was designed for vintage vehicles, then repurposed for the first commercially available 36" unicycle. Coker also used to make a 36 inch tyred beach cruiser bike back in the 1990s.

I'm 6'6" and would love to take El Alto out for a spin. I feel like I would either love it or have to admit that it's just too much bike for me.
El Alto is a lot more professional looking than the "tall bikes" I've seen in places like Key West and Miami Beach, where they weld two frames together. Still, it would be good fun to see Conor have a go on one of those.

So El Alta plays La Cucaracha when descending, like those novelty car horns. Hank’s bike sounds more like a vuvuzela at a football match. Great safety features.
Skyscraping rider on mammoth steel bike with 1x drive and uni-wheels hangs on a race with a top flight performance machine...and rides down stairs. If this isn't proof that we're all (esp. Connor) being sold the wrong bikes, then I don't know what is. I like how you've had fender mounts installed on the frame. A bit market forward thinking there. I'm thinking custom Japanese steel. Have it bronzed to match the hubs/cranks and maybe some green flare on the tips. Would look marvelous.

I've been predicting 32" and 36" wheeled bikes for over a decade and this only confirms my suspicions! It's coming, just you wait. As certain as the daily sunrise, death & taxes! Kinda sad that cycling has been reduced to this. Oh well, bidness gotta bidness!

I always think wheel size should be proportional to the frame size proportional to the rider size. The 700C is too big or too small for some. UCI should let different wheel size be used
Standardisation is broadly good for consumers but perhaps three standard wheel sizes could make sense.
Certainly I don’t need a El Alto sized bike, but something in between that and the standard 700C I’d get in a heartbeat

Those wheels seem to add a significant amount of rotational weight to a road bike. I would like to see comparative performance data with these wheels vrs 700mm wheels and whether this design represents a significant improvement over some of the better cyclocross designs.
