Oil Change Procedure For The 2014 Toyota Corolla

- This video shows how to perform an oil change on a 2014 Corolla and its for educational purposes only. Everything that I do in this video works for my car and should work for yours. There are thousands of comments in the forums about specific oils, weights, and change intervals. I do my oil changes every 5,000 miles using Red Line Oil. If you choose to extend your oil changes to the 10,000 miles, you will have to use the high mileage oil that's manufactured by Toyota or Mobil 1. Please note that my videos are for educational purposes and any work that you perform on your vehicle is at your own risk. If you have any questions post them below and I will get back to you ASAP. Thanks for watching.
I'm pro and will not give this thumbs down. I appreciate this. Done this a million times.
Good video. Never had changed the oil on my gfs new car and had never mess with these cartridge type filters. Thanks for the help and making my day easier! 😎
14mm is the socket necessary for my oil plug and I had to pop off the tab to fit on the wrench for the filter cap, otherwise great video. Very helpful. The brake cleaner tip was much appreciated, as was the reminder to put a thin film of oil on the threads before replacing the cap. One thing you might add is how to reset the ENG MAINT light on the dash.
If you have to pop off the retaining clip to make your wrench work then you have a wrench that is not engaging the cut outs on the wrench with the tabs in the oil filter cap. It's just over-lapping them.
I had to use 14 too
Not sure why anyone would thumbs down this video, but it was real helpful as ive never done it on this car or with a cartridge filter before. I just got back from a long roadtrip and was due for oil change, and couldn't order the toyota filter wrench, but on recomenation of my parts store used the 64/65mm 14 flute toyota filter wrench (doesnt have the fingers) and it worked great! 28.88 for oil plus $10 mail in rebate and $6.50 filter... no more $74.99 + tax dealer oil changes for me thanks. 15 minutes vs 2 hours time shuffling vehicles around and dealing with terrible dealer service. I may buy the filter wrench on amazon or ebay next time i order but for now that flute one works perfect. I'm not paying them 97.99 for my tundra when that comes due either... i'll do that for $50 taxes in easy with 8qts 0w20 synthetic. I tried a rubber strap before trying the fluted wrench that was a no go...
Thank you very much for uploading this video, Lenny. I've changed the oil myself on my previous cars (Toyota Yaris) but this will be the first time I am changing the oil myself on my 2014 Corolla. I went out and bought an oil filter for the Corolla and was surprised to find that it differs from the oil filter for the Yaris. This video was definitely useful. Thanks again!
been wanted to do an oil exchange to my rolas 14 but didnt know how. thanks for the video
Your welcome the procedure is really easy on this car compared to some other cars that I have owned in the past.
Regards
Lenny
+Lenny Clam it's certainly a different filter design than in the past.
Thanks Alot, Lenny ! You are a True Mensch. Very helpful. Thanks again.
thanks this helped on my decision to change the oil. at least its still the same for this model!
I just changed my oil yesterday. The canister was on so tight that had to use a breaker bar to get that puppy off. After finally loosening it, the custom wrench was on so tight, I had to tap it off with a hammer. I really don't understand why the canisters are made such that you have to have a special wrench to take it off. At least with the canisters on a mini cooper, you just need a large socket. To make matters worse, the wrench I bought from an auto parts store would not work with the 22mm socket it said should be used with it. I happened to have a 24mm socket and that actually worked. Between running to various stores. It turned into a 2 hour oil change. Maybe auto makers are trying to get people to go to dealerships for simple stuff like oil changes where they can suggest other vital services like air cabin filter replacement at the tune of $90 and above.
You shouldn't have an issue with it anymore the dealers do over tighten the canisters. I believe Toyota has gone back to disposable oil canisters. Auto manufactures are making stuff hard to work on it seems that every time I buy a new car I have buy new tools to fit the car. I used to teach in a school and the principal wanted for me to bring back the automotive program. After looking in the shop I unfortunately had to tell her that the shop wasn't even equip for oil changes. Cars are getting very complex and the days of your average corner mechanic who could diagnose and fix anything are disappearing.
I'll bet you would have zero problems with the Motivx MX2321 wrench.
@@njsongwriter Since that first change, it's been easy - the 24mm works fine for what I have now. Thanks.
dont forget to bend the filterhousing clip back.
my 2014 corolla has a 14mm oil pan plug.
Good video but can't see what you are doing when changing the filter.
Good demonstration. Thanks.
4.3 qt. of Oil, when replacing filter.
thanks man, mine worked out around 4L so that is right about 4.2 4.3qt...
Great vid! I new it was going to be a pain to do!
Its not that hard if you have the tools the wrench to remove the filter is well worth the investment makes the job much easier.

Just get the filter wrench in the video. It is no harder than any other oil change.
I just thought , after reading some comments, below ...... How I learned about Canister Filters on U.S. Army Boats in Pearl Harbor , back in 1978. These Modern Filters / Canisters are made Way to Complicated ON PURPOSE !!! Can you believe , ...... we used WW2 technology in the '70's , and NOW , the G.D. Corporates are making it more complicated. May i say that I HATE THEM with a PERFECT HATRED ? Making our lives more harder, so they can get more money. How Sad .....
Was wanting to do an oil change on my girlfriends 2014 corolla sport. Do you have listed anywhere the exact tools that you used in this video to get started. Oil, oil pan, oil filter, size of wrench, etc?
Sure Derek you will need a few things for this model car.
1) Oil drain pan large enough to hold at least 5 quarts of oil.
2) Can of break cleaner.
3) 5 quarts of 0W20 full synthetic motor oil. If you plan on changing the oil every 10,000 miles get the MOBIL high mileage oil.
4) Toyota Oil Filter.
5)A 15mm socket wrench or spanner wrench for the oil pan.
6) Oil filter adapter wrench. I highly recommend buying it.
www.denlorstools.com/home/dt1/page_52397_915/private_brand_pbt71110_toyotalexus_4_cyl_oil_filte.html
7) You will need a 24mm socket wrench for the oil filter wrench.
8) Funnel to pour the clean oil back into the car.
9) Paper towels for clean up, use the break cleaner to clean up spilled oil.
Good Luck
Lenny Lenny Thanks a lot. Great video.
Hey Lenny! Thanks for your videos. I just purchased a 14 corolla and have never used a cartridge type filter. First question, can or would you preload this filter? I was always taught to preload a filter with a half qt to minimize dry start up after oil change. Installing a dry filter is very foreign to me. Secondly, do any stores carry that filter tool that I can drive to (O'Reilly, advance, etc) that you are aware of. Sorry, I'm from the old school. Third, do you know if toyota recommends synthetic from the factory on this car on 10k intervals? Would you recommend semi synthetic and a 5k. I'd rather change it more frequently than 10 k (that's annually for some folks). 5k or every six months seems adequate. Thanks for your videos Len!
Greetings Ronald
You cant preload these cartridge type filters the oil will just spill out. Just make sure to put a little oil on the rubber ring gasket so it doesn't pull when your screwing it in. You can use an aftermarket oil as long as it 0W20. Toyota recommends this weight because the bore tolerances on these cars are very tight and a thicker oil could cause damage when it starts to thicken. I don't know of any store that sell the wrench but it wouldn't hurt to look around. However I have enclosed two links that can be of help. The first is to Amsoil. They have a package that comes with 5 quarts of oil and the filter with a new gasket. Just click on which oil you like and it will include the filter. The second link is where you can buy the wrench. I change my oil every 5,000 and haven't had any issues with my car.
Regards and good luck with the car.

You can but because this one is mounted horizontally it wouldn't be very effective. What you could do is fill the oil filter cap with oil with the filter element in it. Then turn over the element and dump the oil back out to put in at the top of the engine when you fill it. At least the element is saturated with oil this way. But it's still not really necessary.
Autozone sells the wrench
Thank You Sir
Thanks for the video. Do you have one showing where you jack up the car and place jack stands on this model? Also what brand of filter did you use or prefer?
Greetings, I use ramps and not jack stands. I don't recommend getting underneath a car that's on jack stands the ramps are much more safer. For the filter I use K&N or Amsoil. Check out the links below to purchase.

Good video but it's always better to change washer and use genuine one plus tide the plug to the specific torque settings of 35Nm and filter torque to 25Nm . Also you didn't show what engine undercover has to be removed to get access to the plug and filter. Thanks
Thanks for the comments.
What do you mean here? "use genuine one plus tide"
I have never used or use a torque wrench on the plug and filter as long as you don't over tighten it just takes experience. Also the 35Nm that you noted may be incorrect. According to Toyota the correct torque on the plug is 27 lb-ft. 35Nm is equal to 25 lb-ft but I don't think that it would make a difference on something like this only because its not under allot of stress like a lug nut or brake caliper.
This model Toyota is the L class its does not have an undercover.
Regards
Lenny
There is no cover that needs removing under the car to get at the filter or drain plug.
S-tech I have an L. Can confirm it has a undercover. Was a bit confusing once I got under there. Anyway I just started man mapping it and tore off everything lol

I had my oil changed at jiffy lube and it took them about 8 minutes. Is that enough time for a standard oil change on this vehicle?
With the right equipment it could take less time then it takes you. Most places don't have time to let the oil drain for 15 minutes and some are notorious for not changing the oil filters. If you want to be sure it's being done right just do it yourself.

Hello, I have 2 o-rings one big and one small and I don’t know what to do with the small one. Maybe you know, thank you for the video. God bless your family and you.
If you are referring to the washer on the pan its a crush washer and there's typically only one. Its there to keep the plug from wearing a hole into the pan when its tightened. However you mentioned an O-Ring and that's found on the filter cartridge and there is only one and it comes in one size. If your asking about the plug on the pan one crush washer will do just fine if you change it after draining the pan.
Regards.
Lenny Lenny Does the crush washer for oil pan need to be replaced every time I change the oil too?
the small one isnt on the corlla I(not mine anyway) but on my tundra its for a little drain than you may or may not use to drain the oil from the cartridge before removal. I haven't done my tundra yet but my filter came with the plastic drain and the new oring. if you dont use the drain you dont need to bother changing the oring. I likely will not use it.
in my experience you can get a few changes out of them, but my dealer gave me a handful, i didn't use on this change but will likely next time. its just there to save damaging the oil pan. on my old accord i never changed it for awhile then experienced a slight drip... after that i started changing it.
Sounds like you bought the wrong oil filter or the factory simply made a mistake and put the wrong o-ring package in the box. Did you also find a plastic service pipe in the box? If so, you might have the wrong filter. Just compare it to the old one. Actually the larger filter likely won't fit into the oil filter cap.
Did you specify which ratchet is used to unscrw the filter housing?
i knew how to do this already jus wanted to see if u had to click the cartridge in the filter encasement also how come u didnt change the crush washer? i change mine every oil change these filters are in amazon 5 for 20$ genuine toyota filters they come with O-RINGS aswell and the crush washers are like 8$ for 10
I did change the washer sometimes I can get it to stick to the pan however if the washer isn't crushed it can be reused but like you said it should be changed when the oil is changed. The washer is there to help prevent crushing and damage to the pan but if your crushing the pan with the plug your over tightening the plug. Most cars are designed so that if the plug is over tightened the threads on the plug will strip before the threads on the pan. Thanks for the info on the filters will definitely be looking into that.

+Lenny Clam anytime bro so apparently my TPMS light is always on i have both tires filled up to recommended psi i tried reseting the light with the reset button in the cabinet but wont shut off could it be one of my sensors are effed? if therenis one there cuz its been on since i got the car at like 10k miles
If the light is staying on after you have filled the tires to the required pressure then its most likely the sensor. Sometimes tire dealerships are to ruff with the valve stems when they remove the valve to plug a tire. Many of them have started using a new drain cap that they place over the valve stem so they drain the tire fast however some places don't have them. Still don't understand how some of them are getting away with breaking the sensors and not having to replace them ?
you don't have to change them each time I replace them third time once the vehicle is serviced by me.
You can get a Fumoto oil drain valve for this car and never have to pull the drain plug again. Also makes the draining much easier to keep your hands clean. Some Fumoto valves even have a nipple you can attach a plastic hose to and run the oil right into an empty jug.Well worth the money.
Do you know how to reset the maintenance/oil light?
I have a video for that.
Cheers.

I can't seem to get my oil casting out or loosing it to change the filter out. Is there a way I can get to loosen?
Even if its on really tight the wrench I use will get it off. If your using something like a strap wrench then it may be a problem. The canister will only go on so tight before it stops. Also try letting the car cool down before for a good 4 to 6 hours before trying to remove it. The plastic and metal will expand under heat and sometimes make it very hard to remove it. If that doesn't work place a small bag of ice on the canister it will cause the space between to canister and housing to shrink. Just be-careful because its going to make the plastic a little brittle.
Regards.
Could it be cause I didn't move over that little metal tab?
Of course but I'm sure you already checked for that. I was under the impression that the filter housing may have been screwed on too tight. I have seen that happen plenty of times. Usually the cool down method worked best.
I'm thinking when I took it to the shop, they used that impact wrench and tightened it to much.
Wouldn't surprise me if they did, hence why I do my own oil changes. I have been harassed by some of them on here for teaching people how to do this. Go figure.
Good Luck.
Tanks
Can you get the filter off without the special filter wrench?
I have heard of some using the correct size oil wrench or a strap wrench however I have never used these types of tools. The I use wrench works for me and I haven't had an issue with it yet. Its a perfect fit for these canister type filter.
Depends on how tight it is... If it's looser than it should be then your might get it off barehanded but not likely.

You torqued that filter housing way too tight!! JUST HAND TIGHT
With a cartridge filter this isn't possible I always tighten cannister filters by hand. It's also possible not to over tighten something with a tool. If you notice I tightened it very slowly to make sure it doesn't cross thread or over tighten.
What's the name of the special tool for the oil filter please ???
You can buy it from here. I bought my wrench from this company and did not have any issues.

+Lenny Clam could I perform the oil change with out the special oil filter tool?
Yes it can be done however you will have to find the correct size wrench to avoid slippage on the filter housing. If I did not have the tool I would recommend using a good rubber strap wrench.

Danti Oil Filter Wrench for Toyota & Lexus 4 Cylinder Prius Matrix Rav4 Auris Corolla Highlander Avalon Camry Scion TC- Super Strong Aluminum Alloy, Fits 3/8" & 1/2" Drive (Silver) $8.99 on amazon
@@MrFriesz
This is wrong. The Corolla, Matrix & Prius do not take the same wrench as the Camry, RAV4 & Avalon, etc. If a company tells you theirs does they are sadly mistaken. It may work but if it has teeth or cut outs in it designed to engage to the tabs on the oil filter cap then you will have to remove the retaining clip next to the oil filter cap and the cut outs will simply overlap the tabs instead of engaging them.

Too confusing for me hahaha I'll just pay for it!
It's not as hard as it looks Jeff but if you choose to take your car in for service just keep an eye on the canister for the filter. I've heard complaints about service shops breaking the canisters. Unfortunately they're not built that well and can break. I have two spares on hand just incase.
Regards
The oil is black and NOT see-through... so it is overdue for an oil change. The oil filter may show some small metallic shavings collected. And use the oil weight the manufacturer recommends... Engineers name that and you the car owner are not a Toyota engineer...
The vehicle wasn't overdue for an oil change. Toyota recommends changing the oil every 10,000 miles on these vehicles, I do it every 5,000. Also the oil weight I used was 0W20 which is the oil recommended by Toyota.
Next time let us see
I want to know where I can get those gloves at who cares about everything else I want the gloves
Home Depot
they come free with a toilet brush
Sir how many inch pounds or foot pounds for torquing the filter plug
18 ft lbs. Don't over tighten the plastic can break.
I have problems on oring when time to tigh up its leaking I try tigh slow a time the car running and stop leak then one hour drive leak again
Make sure it's in the right groove. If it's too high up on the filter it will leak because it's not sealing. Also make sure to lubricate it before reinstalling.
Sounds like the o-ring or the oil filter cap could be damaged. Sometimes that happens if you use a screwdriver or pick to change the o-ring.
do you think its worth me changing my own oil again? mobil 1 synthetic oil is around $40... and haven't really priced filter, i'm sure its $10... plus the wrench, which hopefully fits my tundra too... dealer is $63. Other stupid thing is the american corollas are 10k intervals, and the canadian ones are 5k... figure that one out... really thinking of going 10k miles (16k kms here in canada).
Its always worth doing it yourself, you know what your putting into the car and what you are doing to the car. You will only have to buy the wrench once and don't buy it from the dealer but check out the link below, company sells it for $23.00. I have heard of oil change places that claim to put synthetic oil in the car but they use conventional oil and sometimes don't even change the filter. I know it can be a bit pricey on these types of cars but I figure if I'm going to pay for it, I want the good stuff and the right stuff. Trust me it's worth the peace of mind.
The same wrench will not fit your Tundra unless you get a wrench which has no cut outs on it.
Probably due to the extended winter's in Canada.

They're just rubber gloves that can be found at home depot or lowes. Regular latex gloves are desteoyed by the oil, these gloves hold up just fine to motor oil. People also use these same type of gloves when washing dishes or working with strong soaps.

dealer wanted almost 9$ fornone filter i got them at amazon 5 for 20$
do you think it would be ok to go two oil changes on a the same filter? useing full syn?
Would not recommend it. The oil filter is just as important as the oil and its not expensive on this car around $7.00 depending on where you buy it. Also if your doing the 10,000 mile routine then you would be changing it every 20,000 miles. I don't think its worth the risk to save $7.00.
Regards
Lenny Lenny well let me ask if the filter i have is for extended oil change intervals why would hurt to extract the oil and just put new syn in?
If you are changing the oil every 5,000 miles I don't believe that it
would do any harm. However if you are changing the oil every 10,000
miles then yes it must be replaced. But as I mentioned the filters on
these cars are cheap so why not change it, even at 5,000. If you are
having trouble finding filters check out the website below.
parts.metro-toyota
Lenny Lenny thankyou i know their cheap i only by wix and my car guy wont do just oil changes i thought i could go just through the winter on the same wix canister and fresh syn
I change my oil every 5,000 miles. At the next change I will be switching to a Synthetic filter which is rated for 20,000 miles. I will change that filter every 10,000 miles and continue changing the oil every 5,000 miles.
How many gallons of oil do I Need ?
If its the 2014 Corolla its 4.3 quarts of oil.

Installing the oil filter ring and inserting the new filter is off the camera only 10% visible due to black border around the picture. Disappointing somewhat.
My oil filter is stuck anyone got any suggestions?
Not sure if it's to late for this answer, however the only solution is to force it off. Purchase another oil canister because your probably going to break the one that's on the car. Use the new canister and don't over tighten. Hope that helps.
What size is that oil filter cap?
Greetings Eli, do you mean the filter housing cap? You can purchase the tool to help remove the filter housing cap at the site below. I don't recommend using other types of oil wrenches because they can damage the housing cap.

Make sure to replace the oil drain plug gasket EVERY oil change!
so I changed my oil but the little metal pin by the oil filter fell off, should I be concerned? I can't seem to find a way to put it back either, and it didn't seem to have broken off it just sort of fell.
Hello Danny the pin helps stop the oil filter canister from spinning off of the housing. As you stated it may be a bit hard to put the pin back in if it broke off. I recommend you do the following.
Make sure that the canister is on tight.
Then take some red nail polish and draw a straight line going across the canister and part of the housing.
If the canister shifts from where you tightened it the line will shift. You can keep an eye on it this way. But I don't think that it will if it is tightened properly.
Lenny Lenny I found out from another video that the pin simply pops back into place lol but thank you for the tip!! :)

If you are using the correct oil filter cap wrench there is no reason to touch the retaining clip.
