  • I have been using my EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II for 10 years for landscapes, birds and other wildlife photography. For my trip to Costa Rica, I borrowed the much lighter and more compact Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS. In this video I would like to report on my experiences and compare it with the older EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II in terms of image sharpness, autofocus, reproduction scale and construction.

Also my mkii 70-200 seems have come alive on my R6 ii. Its so sharp and looks so good even wide open.

I have the RF 70-200 f/2.8. I haven't used it very much since getting the 100-500. However, I have been using the 100-500 with the 1.4x for small animals, and think the 70-200mm might be worth taking to Africa for a second camera body. Putting on and taking off the 1.4x in dusty conditions is not something I enjoy. If I had the 200-800 I'd opt for that along with the 100-500 even though the f/2.8 might be nice for sunrise and sunset and night drives. Opinions?

I think the RF100-500 is a very versatile lens for africa. If you have a second camera body, you could put the 70-200 on this one.

@13:34 you didn’t mention if the R5 image stabilisation was on or off for the test. Does the body stabilisation affect the lens stabilisation, other than that a very good review. It would be interesting if you could do a video about your planning for the Costa Rica trip and how it went, tips and observations about the country. Danke

I’m not sure I understand. It was a test of how good the IS is. So I took one series of shots with the stabilizer deactivated (off, left bar in the diagram) and one with the stabilizer on (mode 1). You cannot turn the IBIS off in the R5 menu when you use a stabilized lens. The lens then turns either both IS systems on or both of

Is it possible to put an extension tube and then the 1.4 extender on the Rf 70-200mm ?
You have great reviews thank you 🙏 😊

I‘m not sure if this would work. I‘m also pretty sure you would lose the ability to focus on far distances

Hi Fabian, an excellent review as usual. I had the EF version ii on an almost permanent loan but then needed to buy my own so went with the RF version.
I haven't used it at all for wildlife as I find it to be a bit short and prefer to use my EF 100-400L. However, I use it constantly for sport and occasionally for concert photography and for those genres it produces fantastic results.
However, I don't feel it is as robust or as well constructed as the earlier EF versions. The tripod collar is a flimsy affair which I too have removed, the hood is a ridiculous size which, as you mentioned, kind of negates the smaller form when packing (an example of Canon utilising a common hood rather than producing a product that is properly matched to the lens, as in the EF version) I have never really liked external zooms but to be honest I have used mine in some pretty atrocious wet weather here in Wales and I haven't had an issue as yet. I rarely use extenders but I dislike the fact that I no longer have that option should I need it.
Overall I don't regret my decision to buy it rather than the EF lens (mainly it must be said, because the value of the EF lenses is dropping so rapidly that buying new RF lenses means a better financial investment). but I do feel that Canon are somewhat 'dumbing down' their top lenses. Ironically, although they appear to be skimping on some things their prices are certainly not one of them!

Thanks for your insights! Unfortunately the competition is pretty much the same price as Canon.

There were rumors about a new version of the RF 70-200 f2.8, with internal zoom and the possibility of use with an extender.
The lens was rumored to be released before the end of 2024.
But it's probably been too quiet around this for the speculation to be true....

Nice explanation nice photos of wildlife! In costorica d500 with 70-200 f 2.8 can I take good hummingbirds photos? Please give your fair opinion! Thank you

It’s not sharper since it’s pretty much the same optically as the ef mkiii, which is almost identical to the mkii but for some anti flare coating or something.

Fabian What did you do without The ability of this Lens taht cant take a Teleconvertor Like Sony and Nikon versions can? >> not good for Wild Life photography in Africa with no Teleconvertor ..Its also a Dust Sucker with its consumer Telescoping trombone ext zoom function ?? Better to have a non extending Lens for Wild Life in Africa dust conditions >> Sony and Nikon provide that in 70-200 and in the 200-600 and 180 - 600 >> the Canon 100-500 and 200-800 also a extending zoom ..not good

Well, on a safari I avoid switching extender as much as possible anyway. I was very happy with my RF100-500 on my Safari in Botswana, it was a nice complement to my 600/4. but everybody has different needs. Did you habe any issues with your RF100-500?
