Great to have another video from you Nat. This old fisherman is looking forward to spring so I can fish in warm weather. Meanwhile, I get to watch Nat's videos and dream of getting back to fishing. Thanks again, always look forward to your videos Nat.
Thanks. Yeah those cleats are great and very comfortable to walk on. That's my main issue with other styles of cleats. They're called Stabilicers amzn.to/4gdYch3
One of the first things i did was invest in a good pair of bibs and boots. Love my ice armour bibs, and my korkers Snowmagenddon boots with the carbide spikes are a life saver expecially in the wamer MN winter we've been having. Great tips, nice video!
This a pretty good list. I agree with most everything you said here, and I learned a number of these lessons the hard way. The one thing I think you missed is the need for waterproof boots. Outside of injury, few things will ruin your day faster than wet feet, and it can be hard to avoid if there's any slush on the ice.
That's for sure - wet feet will absolutely wreck your day. I mentioned that good ice fishing gear is warm and waterproof, but I didn't specify the boots. The boots are the most important part to be waterproof for sure.
When I ice fished in my younger years a lot of stuff hadn't been invented yet that you had in your video My dad actually had a portable shack that he built The bottom folded in half and you unfolded it and had a canvas tent you set up on top of the wooden platform. He sold his gas powered auger like fifteen years ago. Ice fishing rods with spinning reels were first coming out . We basically had small rods with two sticks the line wrapped around. When you caught a fish you set the hook and then hand liner it in. Tip-ups are mostly the same. We used Polar? Tip Ups. We had flashlights that turned on when the flag went up and the light shines on the flag. I don't think that LED bulbs had even been invented yet. Most people used cold snow-mobile boots back then Man ice fishing now is like a dream. I'm going this weekend with my dad. He has a bunch of boxes with candles inside that he puts his tip-ups into and has a couple tip-ups that he actually built.
I'd recommend wellingtons with a removable liner for ice fishing, really warm, completely water proof and usually pretty cheap. Mine even allow for the use with skis but thats more for going outdoors than ice fishing.
Braid is best when fishing in a shanty. Flouro is best for hole hopping. Braid with mono leader gives forgiving stretch when fishing lures that have a tendency to pull out of fishes mouth like jigging raps
True - I'm a big fan of braid in warmer temps and you can also use it without any freezing issues inside of a warm hub/shack. Thanks for mentioning that.
Yeah, the one time I got to go ice fishing, was an ice fishing derby. Definitely made a lot of mistakes on this video, except for the not being warm enough. my heavy hunting boots and my barn chore clothes, I was plenty toasty. (no sonar was allowed at the derby)
@@FishingwithNat Hahahaha!!... no. Where they pre drilled the holes was not the best place for fishing overall. derby was 3+ hours and there was barely a fish an hour.
@ oh, you could choose any pre-drilled hole you wanted. Each participant could choose 2. Make a diagram of a bicycle wheel, along the lines of the spokes leading away from the center and in incrementally larger circles around would be holes drilled. As long as someone else hadn’t claimed or they moved on, you could choose any two adjacent holes you liked... but fishing laws in Saskatchewan, you can only have one line in the water at any one time. 😅 🤦♀️ I don’t know what the rules are regarding having tip-ups...
this way of making the videos a couple of minutes long, not adding the unwanted "blah blah blah" and avoiding sponsorships sets him apart from most other fishing youtubers, who take the same amount of time to yemmer and yemmer for jack****, that nat's video lasts.Nnice and informative video mate.
Warm-water species are less active in winter, but you can still catch just about anything. They still need to eat. They just tend to eat less frequently and are looking for smaller "snacks" rather than "meals". Cold-water species like trout are quite happy in the winter and can be very active.
I've had those forever but I think they are either HT or Frabill spring bobbers. Similar to these ones: amzn.to/3Eb4Y9V amzn.to/3WzU3gt I prefer the other style these days. The one I showed was a Clam nitinol spring bobber but HT makes a similar model that's less expensive. amzn.to/3WBMOo7
@@FishingwithNat Thanks, I've been having a little trouble ice fishing this 0.6-mile-long oxbow lagoon around me it's supposed to be about 8 feet deep, but the deepest part I seen on my portable fish finder was 6.2 feet deep. I made hole near some down branches. I see fish on the portable fish finder, but I can't seem to get them to bite at all. Last year all I did was change to glow baits, with a maggot. I couldn't find any maggots or wax worms to buy this year. I will say the water is always a murky brown in this lagoon too, it stays like this all year round.
@@kevinerbs2778 Were you using a spring bobber? I wonder if you weren't able to detect the bites. Wax worms or maggots are usually pretty effective. You might want to try deadsticking a rod too, which can make it much easier to see a bite. That's where you just leave the bait still and let the fish come over to check it out. With a spring bobber on a deadstick, it's very easy to detect every bite. It works best if you're not touching the rod at all so you can see every little movement from a bite. You can prop something under the rod so your rod tip stays a bit above the hole, or you can buy rod holders.
You might also want to try a fake wax worm, which are a lot smaller than real ones. I even break them in half sometimes when a fish just doesn't seem willing to take a whole one. I use the pink Gulp wax worms. amzn.to/4haZUAZ
@@FishingwithNat Well I switched up today & went to a frozen over Lake Erie boat ramp/dock area. I was using an 23" ultra-light rod & 3lbs ice braid. I wanted yellow perch. I got a 4lbs steelhead just off the end of the docks where I made my hole. I just got a spring bobber today; I'll have to tape down or tie down to the end of my pole. I was using a variety of rods ultra-light, light, & medium light. last year all my catches on the lagoon were on the light pole.

Definitely. The ice here is WI is getting very slick again. The remaining snow cover is melting quickly.
Thank you very much!
You bet - I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Cleats for those lakes where there is just glare ice
@ Cleats are crucial for smooth ice. I've fallen on my shoulder a few times and that was enough for me!

Thanks. Your time is valuable and so is mine. No need for BS and product pushing.
What underwater camera do you use?
This footage was from a Marcum Pursuit and an Eyoyo 1080p camera.
I have a question ❓ some advice on fishing on pond in winter are they active or not 🤔💬

Biggest mistake you can make ice fishing is forgetting the beer
A common regret by many a fisherman.
Yeah... Ice fishing is making me regret getting off the sauce.. I didn't get sober for this shit lol
Hello mate, do you have contact where we could talk?
I have an email address listed on my channel page.
Wear gloves. 😊
Yes, for sure. Cold hands suck.
