- I recently bought my very first Dobro guitar (Hound Dog) and this is the first song that I've recorded with it :) I decided to do a cover of Robert Johnson's song Rambling on my mind after watching how Eric Clapton plays it. The guitar is tuned to an open E tuning (E, B (H), E, G#, B (H), E) and I used Jim Dunlop's glass slide nr. 212 (it fits very nicely to my pinky). The video was shot with Canon EOS 650d camera using 50mm f/1.8 lens and edited in Sony Vegas Pro. If you like my version of this song please click like button and subscribe to my channel:

Background:
Robert Johnson is one of the greatest blues musicians of all time. Legend has it that he took his guitar to the crossroads of Highways 49 and 61 in Clarksdale, Mississippi where the devil retuned his instrument in exchange for his soul. He returned with a formidable technique and a mastery of the blues... He recorded Rambling on my mind on November 23, 1936 in San Antonio (Texas).

I have the same Dobro and use the same slide. I have 3 different resonators, but the Dobro is by far my favorite.

Gregor Arh BTW, I am thinking of buying a Dobro Hound Dog. It looks a great instrument for the money. Can I ask you: did it come set up properly for slide playing straight out of the box? Also have heard negative comments about the Fishman pickup. Keep up the great work and look forward to more videos.
To be honest I didn't expect that much of this guitar with regard to its price, but to my taste it is simply amazing. It sounds and plays great and the setup for slide playing from factory was spot on. The pickup is passive (not active with batery), so you really need a preamp if you want to have a decent sound. Hope this helps you with your choice :)

Hey Bro, Great Version of this classic. I just got a new Dobro hound dog Deluxe and I was wondering what strings you use on yours the factory stock strings that came on it are kinda bland. If possible can you please let me know what strings your using because it sounds great. Thanks. love your videos BTW. Cheers
Thanks for the comment Johnathon. I am using either Martin Phosphor Bronze Extra Light strings (010 - 047) or Custom Light strings (011 - 052). They can both easily handle open tunings without to much tension and sound great (it just depends how light you prefer to go).

I would love to know your action settings, could you share them with me so I can use my slide and also pick
I somehow missed your comment. It might be late but anyway - I use quite light strings (.010 - .047) due to higher tension in some of the open tunings (e.g. open E, open A), glass slide Dunlop nr.212 and no pick (fingerpicking). Guitar's setup is as it came from the factory. Hope this helps. Have a good day
very cool. I just picked up a used hound dog (round neck), and I think the action is too low/strings too light. Trying to figure out how heavy to go on this. 0.016 looks like overkill, I was thinking about 0.013. What guage/brand are you using? Thx.

Hi Morten, thanks for your comment. To be honest I never tried any other resonator guitar in this price range, because I immediately fell in love with the sound of this one and bought it after five minutes of playing on it :) Sound is obviously a bit processed in the Cubase (compression, eq and reverb), but not so much that would change the characteristic sound of the guitar. I have two other songs on my channel that were played on this guitar that you can check. Greetings from Slovenia
Gregor Arh The problem with these resonators and dobros is that I can not try them before buying. A couple of years ago I took the chance and bought a tricone from USA. I was disappointed. I think I will take the chance with this one, or the Gold Tone Paul Beard.

How well would you recommend the hound dog for a experienced player but first resonator guitar? Contemplating this one very much

the pickup is the fishman donut?
It's Fishman resonator pickup.
there are various Fishman resonator pickups, the stock one is the the passive donut pickup which sounds pretty bad on itself, the newer Fishman Nashville resonator pickup is way better, but I guess you stuck with the stock one and most of the good sound here comes from the SM58, eventually I went for a handmade magnetic pickup for now, at least it gave me enough volume for a lound band and a decent sound for everything.
Yes it is the stock one. If you plug the guitar directly it does sound bad and since it is passive the volume is obviously low. But once you put it through preamp, apply some EQ, compression and remove the noise (there is a lot of noise at higher volumes...) the sound is quite decent. But still I used only around 20% of sound from the pickup during the mix down.

+Beachbumartist It will probably take some time before I can do a lesson... For the beginning tune your guitar to open E tuning, use the following tab as a basis (don't mind the written tuning - it is one step down in open D, but you will use open E) and just try to play along:

It's a sort of a typo since I used B for second string - but keep in mind that B = H :)

I was wondering if a round neck could handle open tunings like that. I see so many that say you have to go to a square neck. Very, very nice cover BTW. Very nice indeed! I'm also look at this model as my first reso.
Hi Danny, thanks for your comment. There should be no difference with regard to neck tensions between square and round one (difference is in string height). I prefer to use light gauge strings 010s or 011s, because they can be very easily tuned to open A or open E for instance.
What have you found to be the smallest string size where a slide still sounds good?
