My Childhood dream. I built a wooden go cart in 1956 with no brakes and hand operated V belt drive with lawn mower engine. Drove it on sidewalks but made it out alive. Wonderful Job on your project.
oh yeah I remember the old hand lever with a pulley attached to engage the drive push the kart jump on it and try to engage the belt while you were still rolling so you don't burn out the belt or kill the engine lol been there .... good times right!

Excellent design and engineering skills! As a recently retired Science teacher, it saddens me to think of how many boys are wasting their time playing video games and watching tiktok instead of developing the skills to do this kind of thing. THIS kind of skill can earn one a living, while video games just dull the brain.
Eh, I used to think that about video games. Last game I played was Tony Hawk 3 like two decades ago. But there's been some studies that have shown some of those gaming skills can translate well to the real world, but you do have to make the effort to exist in the real world for that to matter... That said, there's such a satisfaction in making things and especially for developing brains, getting that hands-on experience, relishing something physical you brought into existence; it's an amazing confidence booster. Feel like stuff like this should be a much larger part of curriculums. The trades need a boost for sure, but even if you end up in an office job, the lessons in planning, problem solving and pacing are going to translate 100%.
Absolutely beautiful craftmanship. In 1972 my older brother wrecked Bridgestone 350 cc bike. He gave it to me and my friends and we refitted it to an old go cart frame. When finished we rode it at night through town. The law never caught us but at the end of the summer my older brother made us disassemble it for our own safety. But man what a summer. It was no where near as nice as what you have built.
Great video. I like how you left in “mistakes” and redoing things like the steering. It reminds you how it was building this and the struggles of actually working on things like this and building.

Yes, for each planned project, I first collect parts for some time, only when I have most of them already completed, I just start working. Fortunately, it was the first test drive and I wasn't driving fast 😁

BUILT MY FIRST MINI BIKE IN 61. Man! For an 11 year old, that was my first taste of real freedom! Had a Royal Norseman go kart before that, it wasn't near as cool as the MB.

Cops didn't bother us and all we had to do is collect enough 3¢ pop bottles to fill the tank...gas then was 13.9¢ a gallon. There was an old retired welder in the neighborhood who kept us patched up and running. I think he enjoyed our company. Truly...them was the 'good ole'days!'

Like everyone else, excellent fab skills and engineering. When I was 17 years old I took the motor off my snowmobile and adapted it to my home built go-kart. That thing screamed! It was only 18 HP, but with the torque converter a friend clocked me at 90+ and I was pulling away. This thing will also GO! Oh, I am 68 now, so a few years have passed. LOL
No that didn't happen. I had an actual 440 snowmobile engine in mine and it didn't go that fast. Probably twice the 18 horse u had and it wasn't that fast. 90 and going away, nice dream dude. Oh and I'm 63 so calling you out old boy.

Wow! Everything is great to see; from your very well equipped machine shop, to your considerable engineering and fabrication skills, as well as how nice it came out and great videography and editing! Wasn't sure at first if I wanted to dedicate the time to watch it, but it was worth it! (plus I watched at 1.25 playback speed. ;-)
Yes he did. Besides not oiling the drills during usage, yes he did a terrific job fabricating this GoKart! I planned on FF thru this build but he did such a great job I was hooked on watching all of it! Great work! The completed cart looks and runs awesome.

I ran a machine shop from 1974 to 1986 in Canada and in 1986 I got my engineer's degree in street's, sewer's and fiber optics ! I love watching this stuff and it more fun when ya have a genius working !!! Very kewl to watch ya work... I used to hate when you where welding and ya see a flash but the mig welding wire goes right past the weld and through your glove and into your finger !!! MAN DOES THAT HURT !!! 😵💫😵💫
Only go cart I had was in the 70s, had to push it, made of wood and rope steering. lol Spent all my paper route money on riding go carts and Malibu gran Prix in northridge back then. Never gets old
This is the first video I've seen of your work. You have made most other youtubers trying to build similar things look bad. They don't build anything that looks this good and even though a wheel nut came off it isn't because of your fabrication work. It is a great looking kart.
There's one word I keep ising when I watch u build these things my bro and that is LEGEND.. Ur a bloody legend in this UA-cam game. U continue to surpass yourself every time with the things u build.. Do u do any online courses? I'm telling u bro even online welding courses are a great idea but how u build all these products are awesome .. U could find a major source of income from teaching ppl all this knowledge and knowhow u have. I think what u do is being lost in today's world b'cos most young ppl, not all but most, want the easy way out. They don't want to get their hands dirty with honest hard graft but I defo think, no believe u have the skills that could get a whole lot of people interested in Metalworking and fabrication.. I would love to be able to learn from people like your good self. I want to do welding courses here in IRELAND but it's tough to get anything from our GOV now. They seem hell bent on sending the money elsewhere. I cannot say it on here b'cos I was cut off from commenting already for speaking my mind. Billions wasted but if I ask for help I'm told to get lost. I hope guys like u consider the online courses thing bro b'cos it could be a way for u to earn while u teach others who want to learn.. Just a thought my friend. I own an OTK gokart with 125cc iame x30 engine. I get to know the parts of my kart better by watching you build, thank you. Yet I felt that 125cc is a bit too much power for me, a 500cc is absolutely a formidable beast.
Yes, 500cc is hard to control and this engine has 60HP, but I've seen people on YT who built go-karts with 600cc engines from sports motorcycles over 100HP, it's hard for me to imagine how to master such a go-kart, where I have problems with a 500cc capacity and I have to let go of the gas because the front wheels lose traction
Really enjoyed watching this. You have a lot of good time saving tricks like making 2 identical pieces by tacking them together before machining/shaping and then splitting them. Love how you made your sprocket keyway too. This is something I'll probably never do but I'm a home machinist, I'm learning to weld, and in my fantasy life this is a project I would 100% do!

A friend and I built a very similar Kart back in 1973 we used chrome moly for the frame work and H2 Kawasaki triple 500 cc for power. We ran the ET bracket at Amarillo Drag way under AHRH rules. the driver weighed about 85 or 90 pounds. The rules called for a 4 speed transmission only so we blocked off 1st gear.
A suggestion -- integrate the clutch cable in the shifting mechanism (that should be fun, because it has to pull in both the push and pull of the lever) so you can up/down shift "without" the clutch. Excellent video, thanks for sharing.
Yes, I didn't do the toge too clever, I also need to work on the lever that mounts directly to the gear shaft because it flexes when shifting and that's why there is such a big jump when shifting :)
great craftsmanship, based on the speed and agility a roll cage would be something i would have added. this is not a go cart, this is a speed demon. WHO SAID WE NEED DETROIT TO GO FAST👍👍👍

@@robertevans9354Harbor Freight Predator Engines are Great Engines. They Sell Kits on EBay and other places to really beef them up. They are a really good Honda Clone and just as good in my use of them.👍👍

Me also, this guy knows his stuff. All the tricks and metals to use. I have recently been looking at " Rock Bouncers ". They impress me. Right now I want a GPZ500-6 speed go kart though.
Good build. I don't know if you've ever heard of Magoo or Big Willie from Los Angeles, but they were well known street racers back in the 60's, 70's, and 80's. Well Magoo was a welder, a fabricator, and a drag car and cycle builder. Well, back in the 70's he built a 750cc go cart. It was a serious beast.

@@WorkshopFromScratch If you are familiar with "Gasoline Alley" in the city of Torrance, California, I'm sure that some of those guys can speak in regards to Magoo and/or Big Willie. They were all into hotrods and street racing. Also, there's a guy named Lee Hayes that worked under Magoo. Lee Hayes was also a welder/fabricator on one of those builder shows that was big on television.

I would certainly put larger diameter wheels and tires on this one. Just a little bigger. You certainly have the torque for it, and the engine would reach the rev limiter so quickly.
It's like an impedance mismatch, plugging in a guitar to a mic input. Or a marshall into a 8 inch speaker. Definitely needs bigger tires; all that power is being wasted it seems. Not to mention that this thing looks insanely heavy lol. Not that this isn't awesome, but yeah I feel like there's a sweet spot he's missing with bigger tires that transforms this from awesome to legendary.
Amazing skillz, fun to watch! Only thing that got me was after all the time, effort, & money into this awesome build, you just strapped the battery in, no bolt down fabricated holder. =))

I like how you used the engine as the upper part of the frame. I was worried when I just saw the bottom frame and no top in the rear. Nice shifter kart parts used throughout. I wish I had stuff like that laying around. The frame is the cheap part to build. (Well, not so cheap lately with the cost of tubing)

Your concern is duly noted good sir however this is far from over powered, if you compare this to one of today's modern entry level novice 100cc 2 stroke racing Karts I think you'll find the power level is adequate and far from being dangerous especially considering the sturdy and well engineered chassis, the extra long wheel base, wide track, huge 4 wheel disk brakes and as well as relatively tall gearing make this home made machine very safe indeed. One of best I've ever seen infact. 500cc may sound like a lot but trust me that particular engine is sourced from what most countries classify as a Learners bike, it's a low compression design and extremely linear and not what you'd call a power house. The bike it's from is a commuter bike made for economical transportation and not competitive racing, a 250cc 4stroke from a MotoX bike would absolutely destroy this 500cc commuter engine. The builder chose it for his own reasons, probably reliability, cost, and its linear torquey power curve is my guess.

While I'm no fan of fenders, especially on little karts like that, the thing that really sticks in my craw is the tiny wheels. Other than that, its super awesome though!

@@CarlosMesa-mk1vp I grew up racing 'real' cars [aka nothing not made for 'normal highway and gravel road driving'] and doing better than many custom built machines. But then, as a Bunneh Wabbut, being nimble and agile is first nature in a world of lethal competition. Also, I have DoD "Diplomatic Escort" grade driver training from the USAF. I like bigger tires to absorb more shock and make better speed...as well as decent ground clearance for speed bumps.
As a blacksmith and machinist, I can see you have the tools and skills to fabricate everything you want. :) I would have made a similar approach but going for TIG welding on the frame though (yeah..just to show off ;) ). I can see it's difficult to get the power on the road without spinning the wheels. Have you tested the top speed yet?
I thought the same thing also ,tiging the chassis, but I commend him to n his choice that was a true professional call. If he was working with chromolly steel I’m sure he would have used tig but standard steel stock mig, obviously you’ll move faster.

Great build! I’m curious why the double rear axle bearing ended up on the non-drive, non-brake side. I’d have thought the sprocket or disc would have ended up between the two bearings. I’d love to see this on a track with a GPS to track speed. 👍
To reduce weight, I decided to use a stainless steel pipe with a 2mm wall, in a place where there was no sprocket axis, I decided to stiffen the rear axle with an additional bearing, in the place where there is a sprocket and disc, the axle is stiffened by hubs that fasten the sprocket and brake disc. As for the performance, it was a test on YT, so I specially dismantled the meter and did not show the maximum capabilities, I can only say that the weight of the whole turned out to be such that I can easily lift the whole vehicle and load it on the van, and in the first three gears i have to let go of the gas because the front wheels lose grip. And it's only 60 HP, I've seen many videos on YT where 600cc and even 1000cc were mounted, well over 100hp
It’s just a copy of a standard kart. The dual frame on the right is to mount a sliding engine mount. But yes the 3rd bearing should have been mounted in the centre or closer to the sprocket.
@@WorkshopFromScratchit sounds like it would be a good idea to incorporate an adjustable airfoil on the front of the kart, so that it would hold the nose down at higher speeds

Thank you 😁 I modeled it on the original go-kart frame. I made the frame longer by the length of the engine, I widened the front axle and the rear axle is also wider, and the whole thing was made of thicker pipes than in the original go-kart, I added additional reinforcements because the frame is long
What an awesome project 👏 I have 2x Yamaha enduro motors and when deciding to put one in a go-cart, I thought I could use both with all controls simultaneously linked but with individual axils... so on a corner the outer motor will rev higher acting like a differential? has anyone tried it? its just one of those ideas I'll never get around to, but I think it would work 😮😂

I ran a machine shop from 1974 to 1986 in Canada and in 1986 I got my engineer's degree in street's, sewer's and fiber optics ! I love watching this stuff and it more fun when ya have a genius working !!! Very kewl to watch ya work... I used to hate when you where welding and ya see a flash but the mig welding wire goes right past the weld and through your glove and into your finger !!! MAN DOES THAT HURT !!! 😵💫😵💫

Do u do any online courses? I'm telling u bro even online welding courses are a great idea but how u build all these products are awesome .. U could find a major source of income from teaching ppl all this knowledge and knowhow u have.
I think what u do is being lost in today's world b'cos most young ppl, not all but most, want the easy way out. They don't want to get their hands dirty with honest hard graft but I defo think, no believe u have the skills that could get a whole lot of people interested in Metalworking and fabrication..
I would love to be able to learn from people like your good self. I want to do welding courses here in IRELAND but it's tough to get anything from our GOV now. They seem hell bent on sending the money elsewhere. I cannot say it on here b'cos I was cut off from commenting already for speaking my mind. I own an OTK gokart with 125cc iame x30 engine. I get to know the parts of my kart better by watching you build, thank you.
Yet I felt that 125cc is a bit too much power for me, a 500cc is absolutely a formidable beast.
Yes, 500cc is hard to control and this engine has 60HP, but I've seen people on YT who built go-karts with 600cc engines from sports motorcycles over 100HP, it's hard for me to imagine how to master such a go-kart, where I have problems with a 500cc capacity and I have to let go of the gas because the front wheels lose traction

Really enjoyed watching this. You have a lot of good time saving tricks like making 2 identical pieces by tacking them together before machining/shaping and then splitting them. Love how you made your sprocket keyway too. This is something I'll probably never do but I'm a home machinist, I'm learning to weld, and in my fantasy life this is a project I would 100% do!

A friend and I built a very similar Kart back in 1973 we used chrome moly for the frame work and H2 Kawasaki triple 500 cc for power. We ran the ET bracket at Amarillo Drag way under AHRH rules. the driver weighed about 85 or 90 pounds. The rules called for a 4 speed transmission only so we blocked off 1st gear.

A suggestion -- integrate the clutch cable in the shifting mechanism (that should be fun, because it has to pull in both the push and pull of the lever) so you can up/down shift "without" the clutch. Excellent video, thanks for sharing.
Yes, I didn't do the toge too clever, I also need to work on the lever that mounts directly to the gear shaft because it flexes when shifting and that's why there is such a big jump when shifting :)

Good build. I don't know if you've ever heard of Magoo or Big Willie from Los Angeles, but they were well known street racers back in the 60's, 70's, and 80's. Well Magoo was a welder, a fabricator, and a drag car and cycle builder. Well, back in the 70's he built a 750cc go cart. It was a serious beast.

@@WorkshopFromScratch If you are familiar with "Gasoline Alley" in the city of Torrance, California, I'm sure that some of those guys can speak in regards to Magoo and/or Big Willie. They were all into hotrods and street racing. Also, there's a guy named Lee Hayes that worked under Magoo. Lee Hayes was also a welder/fabricator on one of those builder shows that was big on television.

I would certainly put larger diameter wheels and tires on this one. Just a little bigger. You certainly have the torque for it, and the engine would reach the rev limiter so quickly.
It's like an impedance mismatch, plugging in a guitar to a mic input. Or a marshall into a 8 inch speaker.
Definitely needs bigger tires; all that power is being wasted it seems. Not to mention that this thing looks insanely heavy lol.
Not that this isn't awesome, but yeah I feel like there's a sweet spot he's missing with bigger tires that transforms this from awesome to legendary.

I like how you used the engine as the upper part of the frame. I was worried when I just saw the bottom frame and no top in the rear. Nice shifter kart parts used throughout. I wish I had stuff like that laying around. The frame is the cheap part to build. (Well, not so cheap lately with the cost of tubing)

Your concern is duly noted good sir however this is far from over powered, if you compare this to one of today's modern entry level novice 100cc 2 stroke racing Karts I think you'll find the power level is adequate and far from being dangerous especially considering the sturdy and well engineered chassis, the extra long wheel base, wide track, huge 4 wheel disk brakes and as well as relatively tall gearing make this home made machine very safe indeed. One of best I've ever seen infact.
500cc may sound like a lot but trust me that particular engine is sourced from what most countries classify as a Learners bike, it's a low compression design and extremely linear and not what you'd call a power house. The bike it's from is a commuter bike made for economical transportation and not competitive racing, a 250cc 4stroke from a MotoX bike would absolutely destroy this 500cc commuter engine. The builder chose it for his own reasons, probably reliability, cost, and its linear torquey power curve is my guess.

While I'm no fan of fenders, especially on little karts like that, the thing that really sticks in my craw is the tiny wheels.

@@CarlosMesa-mk1vp I grew up racing 'real' cars [aka nothing not made for 'normal highway and gravel road driving'] and doing better than many custom built machines.
But then, as a Bunneh Wabbut, being nimble and agile is first nature in a world of lethal competition.
Also, I have DoD "Diplomatic Escort" grade driver training from the USAF.
I like bigger tires to absorb more shock and make better speed...as well as decent ground clearance for speed bumps.
Fantasic build and engineering skills. Super cart that I would really enjoy taking out for track days, giving it a serious test. Enjoy.

I would have made a similar approach but going for TIG welding on the frame though (yeah..just to show off ;) ).
I can see it's difficult to get the power on the road without spinning the wheels. Have you tested the top speed yet?
I thought the same thing also ,tiging the chassis, but I commend him to n his choice that was a true professional call. If he was working with chromolly steel I’m sure he would have used tig but standard steel stock mig, obviously you’ll move faster.

Great build! I’m curious why the double rear axle bearing ended up on the non-drive, non-brake side. I’d have thought the sprocket or disc would have ended up between the two bearings. I’d love to see this on a track with a GPS to track speed. 👍
To reduce weight, I decided to use a stainless steel pipe with a 2mm wall, in a place where there was no sprocket axis, I decided to stiffen the rear axle with an additional bearing, in the place where there is a sprocket and disc, the axle is stiffened by hubs that fasten the sprocket and brake disc. As for the performance, it was a test on YT, so I specially dismantled the meter and did not show the maximum capabilities, I can only say that the weight of the whole turned out to be such that I can easily lift the whole vehicle and load it on the van, and in the first three gears i have to let go of the gas because the front wheels lose grip. And it's only 60 HP, I've seen many videos on YT where 600cc and even 1000cc were mounted, well over 100hp

It’s just a copy of a standard kart. The dual frame on the right is to mount a sliding engine mount. But yes the 3rd bearing should have been mounted in the centre or closer to the sprocket.
@@WorkshopFromScratchit sounds like it would be a good idea to incorporate an adjustable airfoil on the front of the kart, so that it would hold the nose down at higher speeds

Thank you 😁 I modeled it on the original go-kart frame. I made the frame longer by the length of the engine, I widened the front axle and the rear axle is also wider, and the whole thing was made of thicker pipes than in the original go-kart, I added additional reinforcements because the frame is long

What an awesome project 👏 I have 2x Yamaha enduro motors and when deciding to put one in a go-cart, I thought I could use both with all controls simultaneously linked but with individual axils... so on a corner the outer motor will rev higher acting like a differential? has anyone tried it? its just one of those ideas I'll never get around to, but I think it would work 😮😂

Exquisite workmanship
