Guys. I don't know how to describe what Jerry's love means to me. I stand here listening, just vibing and fillin with tears. Jerry I really appreciate you man, and thanks for posting this. Means a lot. LOVE YOU FAM
Jerry always worked with great song writers and great songs. His ultimate show of respect was the the amount of soul he put in each song. Rich and deep with fragility with a touch of humble. His unique style and tone both in his voice and guitar sound is what makes him a legend.
" My body is bent and broken" This was easily one of the last great songs to see Jerry play live. Great quality and an early version too, thanks for posting
I am very blessed to have seen this show. I was at San Jose State at the time and I lived about 3 blocks from the Venue. It felt like the show was for me. Amazing!
Sarah Tonin. it's been a week. I have this song on a loop I have probably played it a hundred times now. this is my favorite version. Daniel lanois? lemeiux? original guy, meh. Dave Matthews, meh. the Warfield version from two years later is not Superior to this version, imho. I always like to hear different versions but I keep coming back to this one, ten, twenty five times a day. I run it off of a dark hollow acoustic with a minute of crowd noise and tuning, the bam! this starts with the bass Melody. thanks to dead vids for posting.
And here I am back listening again. It is such a haunting song, and Jerry's delivery makes my soul cry. I love it so much. 'I stand with arms wide open, I've run a twisted line, I'm a stranger in the eyes of the Maker.'
I still have not come down from that 90 mics of DMT and this tune from the Warfield show.....no matter how many views, I still wind up smilin' and cryin' over this gem.
The whole Warfield gang counted this as a field trip.Stuck in between Market St and the Mission was getting old. Worried about your car and your walk back to the car each night, hoping it was still in one peice. This show was so wide open and a fantastic sunny warm day which we saw all to few at the warfield. Over 2500 JGB warfield flock at this show. The Maker was a great treat. Using the pedals and many facial expressions. He was really trying hard.We were so proud of him after the show!!!!!!!
@@reginaldinoenchillada3513 Yes, that venue worked out very well --also for Dylan, Santana, Prince ... But this premier of the The Maker was one of those one-time-only moments of Jerry's. Straight from the heart, talking fate, talking doom, in the spirit.
I remember being at these shows and having such an amazing experience!!! This was the show, where I blew my one chance to shake the hand of a legend. Due to my altered state of mind, I was leaving from the stadium from a side entrance and Jerry's limo pulled up in front of me, the window went down and there was the maestro himself. He said hello, reached out his hand to shake mine, but I froze. He and the ladies giggled and drove off. I kick myself to this day, but it was still a rad experience.
TheMerlyn555 a very similar situation happened to me at the Capitol Theather Port Chester, but with Bob Weir. He reached out for a group hug. I f-ing FROOZE
We stood in awe as they broke this out. You could have heard a pin drop. the placed was packed with the WARFIELD family. we finally got to see the light of day on a Saturday as well. This was AWESOME
Bryan Blackledge: beautiful! of course I missed it but thanks for taking me there. I heard this and stopped. as u said, coulda heard a pin drop. I said whoa, what Is this?
Thanks for posting this. I was at this show. Just happened to be in SJ for business and stayed an extra couple of days when I found out the hall was just down the street from my hotel. Excellent time for sure.
i was working the s.f. film festival&i heard when a chillaen filmmaker went by th warfield, he saw the marquee and annc'd: "Jerry garcia!...I LOVE jerree garcee-yah! AND, he looked like him. We met out front&he asked what holding my finger up meant, and when I told him, he immd started saying; "Need 5!!. So fresh&FUN. He came back outta th scene w/brownies for us. I askd insid if he cud buy afew beers&i'd pay him bk when i sold shirts...he looked over his glasses at me...full on jerrylike!!
Damnnnnnn I miss these times, these nights, these shows!!! This was the best & brightest tour since Brents passing in 1990'. Vince should've been replaced immediately on Dead Tour, finding a great keyboard/B3 player!!
I think he played this only when he was very deeply in touch with his spirituality and struggling with sobriety. His voice actually sounds a bit better (as here) when he was prob not using as much. Miss ya Jer
This was a "Miracle" show! Small venue that wasn't publicized. Seems like only us kids knew about it. Everyone got in and it felt like we all knew each other. Jerry pulled out some rarities and the band played out of their minds!
John Kahn gets his own personal up close Jerry solo! For a second you can see he gets a little moved or blown away by that much raw pure guitar playing awesome just a few feet away.
Jerry and John were true Soul Mates musically, emotionally and very alike in so many ways, smart, interesting, humorous, astute, socially awkward but fit so well together.. he was the straight bass player that Jerry didn’t have with Phil Lesh who really played Bass like a Guitar
Like so many of Jerry’s performances over his Career, it was those rarely played tunes that he was still figuring out how to arrange them or solo or close them Out that we’re always extra special
The "declining health", IMHO, showed mostly with the Dead. I think he lost interest, and the Dead became a burden, after Brent died. There was a spark of new life when Hornsby was with them, but when he left, let's face it; Vince wasn't really 'there'. The Garcia Band stuff was where it was at during this period. He could play what he wanted, bring in new, new material; it was fun for him.
I saw four ir five Hornsby shows, he was hardly in the mix and added little. Vince was in a bad sitch, and not really in the Club, but added plenty in terms of his take on Foolish Heart, and Baba O'riley, for example.
Whole shows were definitely not great but there were some amazing moments towards the end. 3 off top of my head. 9/26/93 boston SOTM 3/21/94 richfield Stella Blue 3/18/95 philly Visions of Johanna
I was at this show,I believe Jerry was just coming down from a cold so I guess thats why his voice was sort of rough. I miss Jerry so much it hurts some times!I love you Jerry Garcia.
"Declining health" my ass !!! Anyone who saw the Jerry Band in '92 saw them at their peak, in my opinion. The Warfield run right after this was AMAZING.
Jerry is the real Cupid But instead of falling in love with another We fall in love with the archer. This cool crook mercilessly opens us up to the most beautiful part within us. Our broken heart. The most grateful. The most high. Long live this great creator. Tenacious fearless. Our Jerry that gave his life Immersing us in the love that can be created with magical mystical musical miracles. with each other together lost in love {🌈}:=}.
Oh yeah, and don't forget the Grisman stuff. He recorded a soulful version of Blue Yodel the very day before he died over at Grisman's house. It can be heard on the Been All Around This World album.
responding to frank Sassano This is a Daniel Lanois song. And while he may be more well known as a producer (for U2, Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel, Brian Eno etc.) he's a great songwriter. BTW Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds do a great version of this song.
People shouldn't be surprised Jerry took this song on. (See Amazing Grace, Gomorrah, etc...) While not devout, he was buried in the Episcopalian tradition.
dlynchful---I concur. Listen to the December 1992 shows.....the Friend of the Devil versions from 12/6 and 12/12/92. They are the prime example of what you speak of. Jerry Band was just going off through Jerry's late years---thy were in their prime--the Dead--not so much.
So is this the first one? My old trusty DeadBase IX from '95 (which I'm glad I still have, an example of book form beating looking up stuff online) lists 4-30-92 as the first. It lists this show, but Maker isn't on the setlist. Kind of sounds like it could be the first, a little tentative, but a nice long opening...Wouldn't be the first time DB was wrong w/JGB: It does not list a Goodnight Irene encore from a great Garcia/Grisman Warfield show I saw in '92. But hey it's 20 years old, lots of new info has since come out....I guess i could go over to jerrygarcia.com, but I find that site hard to navigate. I much preferred the old "jerrysite."
I thought exactly the same thing as I combed through Deadbase to see every version he played. Deadbase mistakenly lists the 3rd song from Set 2 for 4-25-92 as "Deep Water" - which is the Maker. Interesting version, the drum beat is really different. I love how this song developed into an absolute masterpiece by spring to fall of 1993. Kinda sad to listen to it after fall 1994 though. RIP Jerry.
