That's a little bit sad. Well under tempo, the intonation while very good, is a tiny bit shaky, and the tone is strangely harsh. Far inferior to the Ricci recording (Ricci was over 70 when he made it). Why would Mintz publish this?

      Because he wanted to????
He won’t be as good as he used to be, age happens.

@@rgnaglqqobdoppelganger You write,, "He won’t be as good as he used to be, age happens." Well, yes, but less to some than to others. Nathan Milstein reached the pinnacle of his art in his 70s, and Ruggiero Ricci's recording of the Ernst studies, also made when he was 76, is world class (though Ricci did get sloppier the older he became). This Mintz recording, in contrast (made when he was about 65), is very far from world class, either technically or musically. It's slow, labored, heavy, plodding, lacking flow. To my ears, he misses the meaning of the piece. To see what I mean, compare it not just to Ricci, but also to the excellent recording by the German violinist Ingold Turban. Turban really understands this music.

@@uliwidmaier5192Maybe Mintz couldn’t handle all of those string crossings in the piece, there are so many possibilities of why his tempo is slower than Ricci and Turban’s tempo. Also, he probably doesn’t have that much time to practice on the pieces he wants to like Ernst’s Polyphonic Etudes, he could be planning this on the day he performed these polyphonic etudes. No need to complain about Mintz’ “sloppy” performance when you can listen to other people’s performances.
