I think that that was a deliberate choice on TLJ's part. I think that after he read in the script what he says to the son afterwards he realized that this was a man who knew that he had no choice and that he was just reluctantly going along with what he knew what was going to happen.

That's true in terms of time in prison before death but it would suck to have your last moments on earth locked up in jail or prison. No family around to say bye or hold your hand for your last breath. It's still a really terrible thing regardless of your age. Although I do agree getting a life sentence at 22 is a lot worse than something like 72.

When I became a father, I instantly fell in love with my son. One day, he and I were playing with my folks, and my dad was enjoying watching me, his eldest child, play and laugh with my then-maybe 3 year old son. He was laughing and squealing as I was wrestling with him on the floor, and everyone was all smiles. When we were done, I looked at my dad and said, “Man, I love this boy.” He looked right back and me and said, “I know. And remember: the way you feel about him is the way I still feel about you.”
It was one of the tenderest moments of my adult life, and this seen makes me think of that moment (you know, minus the gangsters getting murdered). VERY powerful scene, and very true to life - parents will just stone-cold die for their kids.
So best not to get in the way of that.

I’m 64. At 12 some high schoolers swerved their car at me almost hitting me. Dad a very calm guy was in the yard. Told me to get in the car. He chased them down forced them off the road. They jumped out yelling at him. He calmly got out pulled his pistol aimed it. They froze he asked who the f they were if he saw them again he’d kill them. He told me then that when I had a child I’d understand

You get the meaning of the word “Love” when you become a father. And a few weeks and months later you realise what your parents had to go through to raise you. That is the day you become a man in the true sense when you understand what it takes to be a father.

The thing is that most young people underestimate older people. They think that they know nothing, see nothing and that they are useless. Until they get a lesson like this. I had a few coworkers threatening me at work, I sent my father to talk to one of them, a retired cop, actually a militia deputy, who served in mandatory military service for a year and a half. Never had problems later on, they even keep their distance. Just because I am a woman they thought that they could harass me, they didn't count on a 73 year old man to teach them a lesson.

Sadly, many parents don’t give you this kind of ferocity to protect you. In my case my Dad didn’t. He had 5 children. We are loving, decent people thanks in part to our Mom & grandparents, uncle’s & others. My one brother was affected the most. Girls do destruction things to themselves try to find that love & safety. I’m 65 & still cry watching Dads being so great with their kids. I never begrudge anyone who had that. I’ll never forget that after the civil war. The men who had their families sold & traded searched for years to find them. These days some parents can live down the street & never interact with their children. Just venting, thank you. I wish you all well.❤

A father should be just like this, as you grow older you challenge him and maybe fight him, he's the Alpha in your life and will make you stronger by not letting you win but earn it instead.
Even when you outmatch the old wolf, he'll be there for you.
No matter what mistakes you did.
    That's how fathership should be.
