I think that that was a deliberate choice on TLJ's part. I think that after he read in the script what he says to the son afterwards he realized that this was a man who knew that he had no choice and that he was just reluctantly going along with what he knew what was going to happen.

That's true in terms of time in prison before death but it would suck to have your last moments on earth locked up in jail or prison. No family around to say bye or hold your hand for your last breath. It's still a really terrible thing regardless of your age. Although I do agree getting a life sentence at 22 is a lot worse than something like 72.

One day, he and I were playing with my folks, and my dad was enjoying watching me, his eldest child, play and laugh with my then-maybe 3 year old son. He was laughing and squealing as I was wrestling with him on the floor, and everyone was all smiles. When we were done, I looked at my dad and said, “Man, I love this boy.” He looked right back and me and said, “I know. And remember: the way you feel about him is the way I still feel about you.” It was one of the tenderest moments of my adult life, and this seen makes me think of that moment (you know, minus the gangsters getting murdered). VERY powerful scene, and very true to life - parents will just stone-cold die for their kids. So best not to get in the way of that.
My daughter was born with one eye open and one eye closed. I fell instantly in love with her and almost equally fearful. It was the very first time I felt Iike Tommy's character just portrayed.

Never had problems later on, they even keep their distance. Just because I am a woman they thought that they could harass me, they didn't count on a 73 year old man to teach them a lesson.
Or the whole thing, in "Unforgiven". About how it's not necessarily how fast you shoot, if you miss. It's about how true you aim. Old man wasn't so fast, but the homeboys panicked, and Old Man shot deliberate.
Sadly, many parents don’t give you this kind of ferocity to protect you. In my case my Dad didn’t. He had 5 children. We are loving, decent people thanks in part to our Mom & grandparents, uncle’s & others. My one brother was affected the most. Girls do destruction things to themselves try to find that love & safety. I’m 65 & still cry watching Dads being so great with their kids. I never begrudge anyone who had that. I’ll never forget that after the civil war. The men who had their families sold & traded searched for years to find them. These days some parents can live down the street & never interact with their children. Just venting, thank you. I wish you all well.❤
A father should be just like this, as you grow older you challenge him and maybe fight him, he's the Alpha in your life and will make you stronger by not letting you win but earn it instead. Even when you outmatch the old wolf, he'll be there for you. No matter what mistakes you did. That's how fathership should be.
