    Okay here's the gig. Any drummer, worth his weight in salt, knows how difficult this song is. This is not only amazing but it's brutal. Brutal to my ego, I'm going to have to take a step back and re-evaluate. I guess I'm not the drummer I thought I was. Damn you little girl.

    We are witnessing the emergence of a generational musical talent. There are a lot of very good drummers out there, but the really special drummers are able to become one with the kit, as if the kit was an extension of them and vice versa. Yoyoka is one of those drummers. Her ability to feel each song and make the listener/viewer feel it too through her playing is nothing short of amazing. She has technique, power, timing, feeling, and an innate ability to feel and create groove. Already one of the best and most natural drummers I have ever seen.

      I’m almost 60 and I agree with both comments. As I wrote in a comment on one of her other covers, I now know what people in the 18th century must’ve felt like when they were watching Mozart play when he was being taken around to various European capitals by his father to perform for aristocrats when he was still in single digits. I have always read about prodigies, but Yoyoka is the first genuine prodigy I’ve ever seen. To my knowledge there’s nobody else like her out there. She is, in a word, amazing.

      @@Avicenna10 so true. I have seen many kids, playing an array of instruments, that have been bestowed the title of prodigy. Not to denigrate them or devalue their talents, they all must have spent years honing their skills to play the very difficult pieces that they play at the incredible speeds they can achieve. But in the end, they are all playing by numbers, putting the right fingers in the right place at the right time. What, I believe, places her above all the others I have seen, is that along with her technical skills she possesses an inate feel for the music and for the drums in particular. I'm looking forward to see what instrument she has a go at next 🙃

    The tone she got out of her snare is spot on too. I wonder where she had her drums set up in Japan to learn for the last 7 years. I wonder if her parents had to sound proof a box around her drums? I am 61 years old and took music and my given talent for granted. I always said I can play music when I retire. Well here I am. And if I could get to play with Yoyoka I would want to play every day, all day! I saw a couple of her videos a while back, but yesterday I couldn't stop watching her. She so loves to play she is an inspiration! If you haven't seen the video where she was first on Ellen, watch it. It was her first time going to New York and wanted to play in a bar. We were all surprised when she said she had played in bars over 150 times. There is a great video of her with a cover band, awesome band, all Asian men, playing Zeppelin. It is also a must see. It was a great way to start my day, watching Yoyoka love to play her drums. I even love the way she waves with her drum stick at the beginning of all her videos. She doesn't read music and says it is boring. My brother and I were born with musical talent. My brother was 13 and took 2 guitar lessons from Cotton Bud Rogers, who played all string instruments, performed many times on the Grand Ole Opera, and lived in our home town. In 67 we were taught to read from the from the treble cliff. When mother picked Randy up from his second lesson in 2 consecutive weeks, Cotton Bud Rogers told mother to not bring Randy back, because he had already learned to play and he was boring Randy. Randy has played ever since. He has very seldom missed a week without playing somewhere. He now plays at his church. My point, some people have everything in their heads. It is a gift! Like the Beatles. If you can hear everything you want to play in your head and play anything you hear on your instrument, do you need to learn music theory? I think you would be better served just listening to music. If you have the gift, you will understand. If you don't have the gift and love to play, get lessons and study music theory and everything that doesn't bore you. And never criticise any musicians. Music is art. One person's garbage is another person's masterpiece! Enjoy your music and watch Yoyoka videos. She will make you happy!

Just love love love her authentic use of ghost notes and the everrrrr so slightly sagged timing which makes it snap and leap right out of the speakers. (What kid does that? It takes ages and ages and ages to develop such feel.)

      Some people, very few people, are born with the gift! I have seen at least a dozen of Yoyoka's videos. She can take anything she hears and make the sound on her drums. I still haven't figured out how she can play the bass drum so fast with 1 foot. Her older videos, she doesn't have a double foot pedal. Yoyoka is an inspiration and a blessing to all with ears and eyes to see and hear her play!

She has got the feel inside her cute little head. Stevie Ray Vaughan couldn't read a note of music, and I don't think he was interested in ever learning. I’ve been following Yoyoka for maybe a year, only because that’s when I first ran across her. I’ve heard some of her earlier stuff but I had no idea she’d done this. I’m not shocked she could do it, not given what I know now, but I am shocked she did it a couple of years ago. It’s kind of thrilling to watch a miracle unfold in slow motion. The biggest problem I run into now when I watch her is I’m getting a bit jaded - Of Course she can handle that given what else I’ve seen her do - and I have to stop and go Wait, she’s Eleven. (Of course here she’s nine.) But from a musical standpoint it’s gotten past important that she’s eleven because all that does is make one of the most natural musicians I’ve ever seen (I’m 66) look even more exceptional. I mean what the Hell is she going to be doing when she’s seventeen, playing Zappa parts while she stands on her head?

    • @jimmydoho

    • @koshersalaami
      @koshersalaami 3 роки тому +7

      He’s interesting. Much more oriented toward jazz, which is to say he builds more from his hands than from his feet while Yoyoka builds from the floor up. He uses a big kit for a jazz player. And he reads, which Yoyoka doesn’t yet. Even though he’s jammed with Mayer, at this point I think she’ll have a bigger career because she’s interested in more marketable genres and is perfecting those. I’ve spoken about Yoyoka someday getting to Zappa’s hairier material and perhaps Billy Cobham’s with Mahavishnu Orchestra, but Elnoe’s likely to get there first if Yoyoka ever gets there at all because those things are more on his path. What’s most impressive about them is different, even though a lot of their skills cross over, meaning a lot of what is impressive about one is also impressive about the other. He’s a good timekeeper and she can handle complexity, even though timekeeping is more obviously in her wheelhouse and complexity is more obviously in his.
      There is a fundamental difference. He’s playing, she’s dancing. For her, the groove comes first, and her tendency and ability to inhabit a groove is just sick. She lives there in a way I’ve rarely seen on any drummer of any age; she becomes the groove. The rest is ornamentation, which she’s ridiculously good at, but she still plays ornaments like they’re ornaments, which is exactly what she should do. The sharpest dressed people wear their clothes, their clothes don’t wear them, and she wears her music. That’s one of the biggest things that differentiates her from, say, Nandi Bushell, who may have a bigger career than both of them because she can sing, write, play lots of instruments, and is a far more gifted performer than either of them but not a more gifted drummer. Taking age out of the equation, understanding that they’re 14, 11, and 10 years old, I think the most unusual and exceptional gift is Yoyoka’s. They’re all prodigies, but I think it’s only in Yoyoka’s case that the fact that she’s a prodigy is already irrelevant. Yes, she attracts my attention because she’s eleven and because her development is so thrilling to watch and because she’s so so likeable, but if I’m listening to a recording without knowing how old the drummer is, the drummer I want to hear is Yoyoka.
