    Lyrics:
Knocking on doors and swallow every key
Knocking on doors and swallow every key, carelessly
What a terrible time we had, do you want it back?
What a terrible time we had, do you want it back, timelessly?
We lived in the smallest world and all of it darkened as we slept
Knew our paces dictated the turn of the moon and the earth
And yet we still battled, began to doubt ourselves
I saw a softness in you as you were, so that’s where my claws went
I used to drink off of you, take sips of perspective from things you said
And when we disagreed it would burn, but I still loved to taste it
Then something bittered, something within ourselves
Just as most of the things I deserved, I learned how to waste it
I made you sick where I had meant to make you mine
I found loneliness in a room that you were in
I know it tore you up, it wasn’t by design
Do you care that it’s over?
Do you ever trace the lines?
    Was it shared?
Are you sober just to show we’re not alike?
    Walking home is harder
The pace gets hard to keep when you’re in all the windows outlining every street
Do you disappear if I break them or show up in every piece?
We don’t ever speak but I’m holding on, I’m holding on, I’m holding on
Which version of you is the right one - the one from our memories?
The one locking doors that I knock on and swallowing every key?
I don’t want to sleep but it’s coming on, it’s coming on, it’s coming on
Do you care that it’s over?
Do you ever trace the lines?
    Was it shared?
Are you sober just to show we’re not alike?
I said I loved you as a way to change the subject, fingers breaking as they crossed
You said you loved me so you wouldn’t have to prove it, with both eyes towards the door

Hey all i Play the old man in these vids. just my point of view from someone who has lived allot. I play With Tim and Erics band Pusswhip gangbang I have had the pleasure of working with the likes of Michael Jackson Marlon Brando and have personal relationships with some of the most famous and successful musicians in the world. as you get older you will realize that LIFE and ART are about balance and change, growth. Look at your own lives and ask yourself "do you really only want to do ONE thing your whole life"? if this band is growing and maturing this is natural and healthy. getting a musical compliant out of me is rough. these artists are true and on track to be great. If you only want SCREAMS then that may be what is going on in YOU emotionally and you should really look at that. allow yourself to feel other things. Other than the rage and anger.. i play a variety of characters sometimes i am allowed to be human have emotions most times not. there is love in you and light be balanced like this band is. i believe that you deserve to feel it all, experience it all, live it all.... don't you????? DO YOU CARE THAT ITS OVER? ........................IS IT JUST A WASTE OF TIME.

I agree. Don't judge until you listen. This album is a work of art. So since you are the man in the video himself, I am legitimately wondering who he represents in the songs. I have my assumptions, but I want to know!! :)

    • @FrankieRay
      @FrankieRay 7 років тому +10

well like any good song the words are vague and let you place them where they are applicable to you, what does this character bring up in you? where does he take you emotionally? did he affect you? do you feel he was connected to the song? the moment. what does he bring to the surface to you akreno94? and yes being a musician myself the musicians in this band are true artists and very talented.

    • @alisonmarie630
      @alisonmarie630 7 років тому +3

My name is Alison! Very nice to meet you Frankie. Yes they are vague, but I pictured a future version of myself having regrets of past relationships. I also was connecting Cory to your character in the video being his father, which I know he has a lot of emotional connections with in his previous music. I just wondered if you knew ALLB's specific intentions since they were the ones who created the music video for the song. :) They are extremely talented. I absolutely love the album. This song realllly hits home though.

Hi Alison well i had an outline of the vid they allowed with the director and me to bring allot of our interpretation to the songs witch is wonderful for an actor trusting me to bring something memorable im glad it resonates with you

Frankie Ray Love your performance in this. I definitely agree with you. I am glad that A Lot Like Birds took this direction. The emotion in the words, weighs so heavy and gracefully. Those upset about how they use to sound need to embrace change, and yes other emotions than anger. Couldn't have said it better myself.

I never heard the old stuff - My son listens to these guys and I overheard them. This is great. I thought modern music was all Lady Gaga and Katy Perry - turns out there are actually bands with talent out there. Coming from an unbiased non fan opinion, this stuff is great - don't miss out because it doesn't sound like the old lineup - its still great music. This is the kind of stuff that needs support in a day in age when everything is old men writing computer music for chicks who can't sing without auto tune.

I know that some people will say this isn’t like their old stuff, and that they’re “alone like birds” and whatnot. But to me, experimentation and change shows personal and professional progression/development. It’s a great thing. They are pushing themselves to learn new things and in turn learn more about themselves in the process. Sticking with the same sound all the time would be selling out. EMBRACE the change. Personally, No Place is still my favorite album, but I sure as hell love this one too. I’m excited to see where they all go, on their separate ways.

The Magical Boy you have that right in general, you can say whatever you want and I don't blame you for that. Everyone has an opinion, but not everyone has to know your opinion. But going back, I'm just saying that you should show them a little respect for trying new things, even if you don't personally like the direction they're going.

macabre chacon I think it would be better if you gave constructive criticism rather than just saying that it sucks. Yeah it's more simple to say that, but if allb saw your comment, don't you think it would be better for everyone to see a constructive comment? Like if they wanted to please people for example, saying this sucks isn't going to do anything. Wouldn't you say?

I'd like their new stuff if it wasn't tryhard ballad after tryhard ballad.
Enjoy the whole album of ballads. I'm sure that sound won't get old immediately. It'll be a one and done album for almost everybody.

At least it's genuine. I'd rather they do this than pretend to be something they aren't. Two of my favorite Devin Townsend albums are the ones that don't sound like anything else he did (Ghost, Casualities of Cool) because they were genuine. Dance Gavin Dance didn't keep the same sound throughout their career, and even though they've moved in a poppier direction with Tilian, it still works really well. I love Happiness, it's totally unlike anything else in the DGD catalog, but Mothership is a fucking banger, and it's also the logical evolution from Instant Gratification. This is a good move for ALLB, trust.

i couldn't disagree more, but like with all music and art, it's all subjective. Personally i find it whiny and gutless, lacking any depth whatsoever. The album is a total fail imo. i'm sure some disagree and some will agree, but i'm entitled to my own perspective and opinion as we all are.

I've been a huge fan from the start. I support this wildly. the vocal thing is not a problem for me. I think they kill it story telling wise and I relate to every release so far. I've met them in iowa and after hearing their new material I just wanna give them the most support. everyone has their story but these guys get it and they give a shit.

I love A Lot Like Birds. I truly do. It breaks my heart to not enjoy their new work as much as their past 3 records. I was not sold on the first single, I loved The Sound of Us, and am torn on this one. I still pre-ordered after the first song, and I'm still gonna give it a chance. Knowing that this band is the same that wrote both my favorite song of all time and my favorite album of all time, it's hard to not expect the best.

Huge fan of both Foxing and ALLB, and honestly this is good, although I do wish they'd mash their old sound with this. Coming from someone who's tried writing and recording an album, choosing a sound is much more difficult than I originally thought. Major respect to both bands for releasing music they enjoy.

I thought i wasn't going to enjoy the new ALLB too much from hearing the other song since its sound didn't really suit my taste but after hearing this song i doubted and judged too soon! This song is really good especially with the song starting soft just to build up to the hype of the powerful singing halfway in. I can't wait to hear the rest of the album now!

the song is something of its own kind, but we all already know that. I feel this music video wouldn't half as good if it were not for the acting which not only provides some degree of context around the lyric's meaning, but also is emotional, expressive and packed with explosives. kudos to that old dood :)

This song just made me really emotional. What music should do, I used to love alt/emo music in high school and this gives me a lot of nostalgia for that sound but it also feels really new and amazing.
