The setting they chose for her lip-syncing her big hit was completely inappropriate. What's worse is the very next week they featured The Beach Boys singing "Help Me Rhonda" in a graveyard at midnight.

This was the only top 40 hit by Vicki but it went all the way to #1! She sang it on the Carol Burnett Show and when it sold a half-million copies, she was rewarded with the gold record on the show. No one told her beforehand that it would be given to her. Her reaction was priceless. You may ask who Vicki played on the show. Many different parts but her most memorable role on the show was as Mama, later to reprise her role on Mama's Family.

Vicki has joked that she's often asked to perform "a medley of her hit" (singular). :-) Here's a clip from 1978 from "The Carol Burnett Show" with Vicki as Mama, Carol Burnett as daughter Eunice and a then-56-year-old Betty White (who's now 98) as daughter Ellen.

The back story to the song is fascinating. Vicki was only married to Bobby Russell a short time, and when she set out to record an album he wrote multiple songs. This is one he wasn't happy with, though Vicki told him that song would be a hit. Long story short, the lone musician in the studio when she recorded her demo played and mixed all the instruments with Vicki's vocals. Vicki went on to pitch the song to Cher, of Sonny and Cher fame, but Sonny had the same criticism others shared, that the song would offend southerners and never find an audience. Finally, the song was produced by Snuff Garrett, who saw it's potential. Vicki's vocals are perfect, and the song has a great 70's dark ballad vibe. The album didn't rise too far up the charts, but after nine months this single reached fourth on the charts. Vicki has said the success of the song validated her, and probably helped finish off her marriage to Russell. The whole experience turned her off from recording, so who knows what she might have accomplished with more experience and more good songs. With her long career in comedic acting and performance, including her successful run in syndication with "Mama's Family", the gold record was just icing on the cake. Carol Burnett was truly inspired when she saw the potential in teenage Vicki, who started out with no experience that I know of. Talk about having a gift of talent. I wonder how many potential hit songs Russell threw away without Vicki's instincts. Maybe that last comment is unfair, but Russell and Bono both balked because the song might prove provocative. I tip my hat to Vicki's persistence.

There is another popular big country western singer who comes from Georgia as well. His name is Jerry Reed. He's quite the Storyteller and very funny. He mostly sings about the Louisiana swamp land or getting into trouble with the law. None of the other reviewers have reviewed him yet and I'm hoping you will review him. He recorded dozens of songs but his 3 top most popular songs from the late 1960s and 1970s is:
    1. When you're hot you're hot. 2. Amos Moses. 3. Framed.
Try to listen to his record versions instead of his concert versions because his records have more detail and are funnier. If you want to review one of him doing a show there is a good one of him doing a duet with BB King. Both Jerry Reed & BB King are Master guitar players.

You are an interpretive artist. You get the times that you see. You manage your own. You are also beautiful (sorry if this is not appropriate). You are great at this. Keep going.

Once again your reaction didn't disappoint. I always loved this song. Reba McEntire also did a pretty good remake of this song also. Reba is another artist that you would probably enjoy. She had so many hits. Is there life out there is one of many.

I had this on a 45. We (my brother and I) got some stickers, like tattoos out of a cereal box of ghosts, tombstones. (Must have been Halloween ) We stuck them all over the record label. This record is probably somewhere in the old farm house now.

Love this song and loved your reaction! Also, I learned something. I love the song "Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro as well (by the way, you should react to that one), but I had no idea they were written by the same person! Kudos for reacting to the original Vicki Lawrence version! It seems like the few reaction channels that bother to even listen to this song all want to listen to the remake by Reba McIntyre (i love Reba, but on this song Vicki is just so much netter!). Thank you!

I love that you made a distinction between the story and the storytelling! Both are important, and thankfully both are great in this song. I was ten years old when this came out and my little writer brain loved it. I was five when Bobbie Gentry’s Ode to Billie Joe came out. I just listened to it and highly recommend it. I’ve been binge watching reaction videos by you and other reactors lately and have been reminded of how many songwriters in the 70’s and 60’s were great storytellers. We didn’t realize how good we had it. Thanks for taking us old fogeys along on a trip down memory lane. I love seeing your reactions to music we grew up with.
