    I love that everyone's set up is so different depending on where they are travelling. Tics put me off the Bivvy but I have to say bears would put me off bikepacking. And what, Jenny, is a bear hang? What can the ball of string do to stop a hungry bear? 😲

    • @JennyTough_
      @JennyTough_  4 роки тому +13

      Oh lazy film-making - you hang your food and smelly stuff in a tree so it's suspended in the middle of the air and presumably then no animal will eat it. The main thing is to never take food (or bags that once carried food) into your tent at night because then the bears will sniff it out and come inside your tent...

I've been a roadie all my life but just getting into bikepacking - have welcomed quite a few bikepackers into my home through the warmshowers site and their stories have been amazing - have made some good friends for life! Funnily was just looking at picking up some Apidura bags for my new gravel bike - what size saddle bag do you use? My first planned trip will probably be 4-5 days along the west coast of Ireland but hope to do some longer ones in the future once the lockdown restrictions start to ease and we can travel again! Thanks again

      It was BeFree. I had a Katadyn one that I let freeze in Kyrgyzstan (apparently you should bring these filters in your sleeping bag if it's that cold). Exactly the same as far as I can tell! They're really great for being fast to use and a space saver, but the bladders *will* puncture.

  • @victorgentis2711

    Hi Jenny, I loved to watch your videos and all your content on IG.. it's so exciting. I joined the bikepacking community very recently and decided to ride all the castles along la Loire in France. It was an easy start however It brought so many questions.. I had small or big issues with almost all my apidura bags (zip broken, scratched my frame even with 3M tape, the attached system for the expedition accessory pack on the front was so annoying...).1) How do you protect your bike from the bags? 2) I know it's safer in Canada but do you have tips to prevent your bike to be stolen? (I had to carry a huge D lock (so heavy) on my trip because I was so scared somebody steals my bike while I was sleeping). 3) for long trips how do you manage your food because you said you would not carry a stove? Do you use dry food or do you stop on your way? 4) Do you wash your clothes/kit everyday? Do you have tips for outfits for visiting touristic places or hang out with some friends because I brought some clothes but it takes so much room? 5) How do you clean yourself? I used wipes for the evening before going inside my sleeping bag but after 2 or 3 days it starts being really bad hahaha.
    I know it's so many questions but I wish I could know more people like you to share ideas. I admire you so much. Keep having fun on the trails.

    • @JennyTough_
      @JennyTough_  4 роки тому +4

      Hey Victor! Let me try to answer all of them...
      1) You can get frame tap for your bike to protect the frame. Some are just little stickers, some companies will do an exact fit to your entire bike.
      2) We have major bike theft problems :(. I use a small cable lock that doesn't weigh as much - sure someone can cut through it, but I'll never be far from my bike!
      3) I carry a stove in places like Canada, but in Europe where things are closer I would just eat cold food. Muesli is a great bikepacking food - I'll carry a bag with a foldable bowl and just buy milk whenever I pass a convenience shop.
      4) I was my shorts! I don't usually have civilian clothes, but I like riding with baggy riding shorts which are a bit more modest in public, and usually wear a tshirt instead of jersey. I also wear SPD shoes that are comfortable to walk in.
      5) Wipes are great, but yes a shower (or a swim) every few days is ideal. Public pools, campgrounds, and some truck stops will let you use showers for a small fee!

  • @bengt_axle
    @bengt_axle 4 роки тому +1

    How come bike packers traveling in wet, rainy areas don't use fenders? It would seem that they would keep all your bags drier and cleaner, as well as the bike itself. Too much air drag or damage from trail riding?
