I think the lines wouldn't be so difficult to work around if they were printed in a very light gray instead of black, so they're more of a guideline than structured shapes
Yes! There is a Japanese illustrator that publishes her books like this, it's great for people like Sarah. Her name is Eriy and the books are usually called "tracing books" here on UA-cam.
That's such a great point about the extra lines and details in adult colouring pages in comparison to children's colouring books and I completely agree! You did great with this one, the colours turned out so nice.
@@jaynitaanncarney Well, if he weren't extremely good he would not have had a staff, or anything else. This is how it works in all the arts. Maybe a glass painting (I mean paint on the underside of the plastic/glass in the frame). That would give the effect of colour but still keep its genuinety
@@SarahRenaeClark oh noo i disagree, i dont think you should colour it in... but instead you might want to photocopy and paint in the copy? That way youll get both the original and a "painted" original haha
One of the top artists offers two versions of her coloring pages: simple and intricate. It's nice that way. While indicating where the light is coming from, maybe those lines make sure you can't do an exact copy. I don't like seeing a picture coloured, as I wish to do it myself. Once I have seen a picture coloured, I can't un-see it.
True. I'm the same way when seeing a page colored before hand. In a way it takes away from my creativity but on the other hand helps me learn and expand my imagination.
This is so interesting, because while it does seem like an excellent learning tool - using contextual colors for shading and highlights, as you mentioned, which is a great skill to learn! - it also shows the limitations of the Thomas Kinkade style. The overwrought, highly saturated style struggles more in pencils than oils. Not a bad introduction to how to play with color and lighting, though!
When I worked in my college library, we had this puzzle that my supervisors generously called the "mean puzzle" it was something like five hundred or a thousand pieces, completely covered in Dalmatians, but the print was on both sides. I have no idea where they got it or what company makes it, but for all the late(ish) night hours we spent doing puzzles I was never brave enough to try that one lmao 😅 (also, I don't think you should color that picture of pumba, but maybe a photocopy of it on some better paper... 🤔)
It's amazing how much you can learn from studying the reference image so closely... the colors in the original are just so amazing, great job with this one!
I agree with your opinion about black lines, especially if they are thick. I just remembered that I got sometime ago a watercolor coloring book (flowers, leaves, etc) by artist Kristy Rice. Her book is made of light grey lines and it is printed on heavy watercolor paper. Each page is repeated twice, so if you make mistakes, you can use the one at the back. The instructions are also printed on watercolor paper, so those can be used to practice. So, I guess the publishers should aim to provide adult coloring books with grey lines and fewer details for adults who like to experiment and mix colors freely without the limitation of black lines.
I bought this book to help me learn new skills and methods. It’s on sale for around $7 on Amazon. My first attempts will definitely be on copies of the pages because I’m nowhere near skilled enough to dive right in on an actual page. I understand the disappointment that he didn’t personally paint every picture but I’m not disappointed, I see his name as being a distinct style, which people love or hate, but either way it’s a challenge and an opportunity to learn how colors trick the eye into seeing details that aren’t actually there and creating art that changes based on the ambient lighting it’s viewed in. It’s been helpful to see your process so thank you for sticking in there despite the frustrations and lines.
I love your color swatches! That's so creative! I've always liked Thomas Kinkade paintings! The warm light glow is always my favorite part about his creations! I actually like your coloring better! It seems brighter and lighter!😄Wonderful job!
Great job! Just a suggestion, you could scan the page into your computer, make the edits you want, possibly lighten or even change the colour of the lines then print the page onto the paper you want and colour that in XD I know it's a few extra steps but might be worth it 😁👍 either way, you still do a great job ❤️
I always photocopy pages from colouring books cos I don't like to colour in books (transfer problems, bleeding, density etc) but can't bring myself to destroy a book to single out the pages either!
Thanks SRC. I loved hearing your thoughts on intricate vs “open” line work - it would be cool to see this developed more in a video about how you create colouring pages. I’ve been thinking about the mechanics of what goes into a good colouring page a lot recently - it’d be great to have more of your input as a professional and an educator in this area.

You did a fantastic job! Hearing about the struggle with the dark lines reminded me of Eriy's tracing books! The lines are a very faint gray and totally disappear under the pencils! I've suggested Eriy's Romantic Country books before because I think your style would compliment her pictures nicely, but maybe the Tracing Series would be an even better match!
I stumbled upon shading with different colors vs darker/ lighter versions of the same color in high school. I liked using my gel pens for art anyway, which didn't have the best range, but one piece felt like it should be entirely in the glitter gel pens specifically-- of which I had about six or seven colors total. I bought this book after seeing it on Mira Byler's channel and I hadn't really looked through it yet with the which ones are Thomas' work eye yet. Excellent point! I have a calendar with the original Disney set and I did notice some of these weren't in the calendar. And obviously Tangled is too new for Kinkade to have painted himself, but Dumbo surprised me.

oh, i found this coloring book awesome, i watched you color some of it in here too. I am impressed with your picture of the universe, it is very beautiful, many details are difficult to color, but you have done it in a simple way.
I started using colored lighting when I picked up prismacolors because I've always been inspired by theatrical light both on stage and animated. As a theater major and a halloween kid with way too many SFX lighting has allowed me to see a lot of items in new lights literally and use that as a reference in my art.
You can use a white out fine point pen to remove the lines I put a layer then lightly sand the white out to make smooth on the pages then color over them :)
This reminds me of when I was in art class once and we were asked to paint some mountains in the background. The teacher told us to start with a pale purple and at the time I was really confused as to why we would use purple but when the piece was finished, I realised why
These videos always make me appreciate not just your artistic talent but the talent of the original artist - looking forward to watching the rest of this video ✨
Dito that! This book is not easy to color at all and I should have messed it up completely, it's a scary book but you are so talented! Hugs from me 👩🦳 and my cat Trollet 🐱❤️🐾 in Sweden 🇸🇪.
That is my feeling about zentangle. It's started as it's own thing.. and it's fine, as an art form of it's own.. but it has invaded way too much of the coloring book market. I can't tell you how many times I've been excited by a cover just to open it and find zentangle, or some random approximation of it which is worse, everywhere. Thankfully we are seeing relief from the "hidden objects" as well, which were another huge problem for me. Here is this gorgeous surreal scene, and I've got a toaster shoved in the middle of my pirate ship. No.. just no. These contour lines are easy enough to get rid of if you are willing to repaper your image though... just add some white out and pop it on a scanner. Also remember you can reduce the darkness of the lines super easy as well on most scanners either by reducing the density by a percentage or printing it in "draft" format.
Aloha and happy day! I’ve tried Thomas Kincade’s regular book and didn’t make it very far. The lines, were too busy. As you aptly pointed out, that many adult coloring books fall under this mistaken assumption. Thanks for breaking it down, as usual, your process is really logical to me and, helpful. LOVE the cups!! Lol I also completely forget things I’ve bought especially for an occasion. Haha too funny, and it happens! Thanks again ya’ll! Chipper cheerios! 😁
I feeeeeel you! When a coloring book is too intricate and detailed it's a reason to not buy it for me. I don't need needlethin spaces I need to color with a microscope! When I want micromanaging stressors I go to Reddit, not to my coloring book. I love when they have spaces for creativity
I like the lines. But I feel there are ways to improve the lines. Publishers, take note. First you could probably leave very faint gray lines similar to pencil lines. Secondly the lines could be very faint and dotted that way someone can cover them when they apply colour.
Oh my gosh the orginal artwork of Pumba, that's something I'd love to own as well. The Lion King was my first fav Disney movie growing up, unlike most girls growing up I wasn't a huge fan of the princesses because I wasn't much of a girly girl. I did like playing with dolls but I didn't like dresses or anything like that. Still not that girly as an adult lol but I do enjoy more princesses now. Those cups bring back so many memories from my childhood! We had the Looney Tunes set and I remember always using the Slyvester one. We ate noodles out of them and had hot chocolates out of them, even soup. The page came out so good, all the colours make so much more sense as a whole.
@@SarahRenaeClark I'm from New Zealand so I'm not 100% sure where my Dad got them. I do believe there was a limited time period where they were at a petrol station. You spent so much and got a discount on getting a cup or you could out right buy them but they were more expensive that way.
Man.. something for adults to color but it has the same thick black lineart you find in children's coloring books lol The lineart shouldve either been in a light sketchy pencil line or a transparent lower opacity grey lines
ooohh I loved the new editing in this..! And the coloring of course! :D I got a World of Warcraft coloring book years ago as a present, but so far, I've only colored 1 piece in it, because they are all sloppy conversions from digital art made into lineart. It's horrible. There are lines all over the place and they don't make any sense when I compare them to the original! Just like this picture where they've drawn the sunrays - why?! But, as always, a great video Sarah :)
You are so talented! I don't even want to buy this book, it looks like it would just give me a headache lol. Have you thought about maybe scanning one of the pages from the book and digitally altering the black lines? Just a thought 😊

Oh, I love these Disney adult coloring books! I’d like to color them though I’m a teenager and the pencils I have might not be enough.😂😂
You’ve got to start somewhere!
Hbos game of thrones coloring book is INSANE🤣 I feel you lol
You could upload them to your computer lower the opasity, then print it out again and bam! Light linear (Just an idea)
I’ve seen the Looney Toons set too! I think they were from Hungry Jacks in Australia?
@@SarahRenaeClark I'm from New Zealand so I'm not 100% sure where my Dad got them. I do believe there was a limited time period where they were at a petrol station. You spent so much and got a discount on getting a cup or you could out right buy them but they were more expensive that way.
Man.. something for adults to color but it has the same thick black lineart you find in children's coloring books lol
The lineart shouldve either been in a light sketchy pencil line or a transparent lower opacity grey lines
I think you should photocopy pumba so that you have the original but also another fun one
ooohh I loved the new editing in this..! And the coloring of course! :D
I got a World of Warcraft coloring book years ago as a present, but so far, I've only colored 1 piece in it, because they are all sloppy conversions from digital art made into lineart.
If you have a copier, you could copy the pumba print and print it onto colouring paper, that way you can keep the original intact!
