Hey! Probably a newbie question but I'm thinking of buying a DAW controller so I can control the dynamic, expression and vibrato with faders. Will be possible with any of these, right? Cheers www.thomann.de/gb/akai_professional_midimix.htm

You’re such a funny and lovely person and a great teacher :)
As a person who want to be able to write compositions and soundtracks, it feels so good to someone that enjoys to teach and to work compositions, I hope I’ll have a good time like you in the music industry.
Greetings from Israel :)

Me: Falling in love with existence and the fact that every decision of my life has lead to this moment of me listening to this melody right now.
Guy: That was... horrible.
omg for real tho
Same 😂😂😂😂
HAHAHAHAHA
so true
I mean, the mistake he made at the end was horrible, I'm sure he meant just that and not the whole take.
Me: oh that sounds nice
He:that was horrible
Me: yeah that was nothing ...
I felt the same way hahaha
every single time lol
😮😮😅
How come when he click a button I hear a beautiful summer day in nature, but when I click a button I hear my parents crying
One of the best thing in Guy's videos, is that eternal lively and joyful attitude, making us smile. Other youtubers feel happy only showing their talent (that is great enough), but Guy uses his mind, thinking music while filming and recording the whole stuff. So enjoyable as a musician...THANKS Guy!
It’s his sense of humour and upbeat (pardon the pun) manner that makes him so engaging. Gotta have a sense of humour!
He’s a genius ❤
I love how he works through the process of developing the melody etc. even the professionals need more takes
Guy is simply the best. Unmatched master! I learn so much from your tutorials.
To quote Yoda "No ... there is an other." But this video definitely inspired me!
Hans Zimmer???
One of Cubase's most amazing features is retrospective record so when you forget what you play (which I do a lot when I'm in the zone), you can just call it up because cubase records all the time without you knowing :). I find sometimes as soon as the click track goes on, my creativity is hampered by rules.
Ableton has this as well. Absolute lifesaver. I feel the same way, instantly restricted.
To make this work on Logic Pro X, press shift + r together ! :)
FL studio has this too - under tools - dump piano roll log from last 2 to 30 minutes. I don’t even use Record anymore honestly lol
This tutorial is perfect. The transparency in how he works. Inspiring in itself, showing that music isn't a one take wonder. Love it.
How someone becomes so proficient with the hardware and software knowledge for the orchestration to not be interrupted by an inability to understand the processes to get the music from the keys to the DAW and having the patience to make it seem so fluid is quite simply breathtaking.however good my ideas may be they are spoiled by a complete fear of the technology being used to capture it..some folk are just so far ahead in the knowledge curve, I'll just leave it to them to make the music and I'll stick to playing it.part of the awe that I experience from the music is that knowledge that I simply do not have the capacity to grasp the complexity of getting ideas from conception to completion!! The sample library quality alone here is breathtaking.
Look mom, no hands (4:53) 😅 I love this guy.
this is not "how to write music" this is "how i write music with my playing skill" :D still fun and inspiring to watch :) thanks!
The libraries you use sound absolutely gorgeous. Great quality.
“What you’re always fighting is the power of all the stuff you do instinctively without thinking. Which is great the first time around, and gets less and less great every time you do it.” So true. Thanks Guy!
I never thought I would have been so keen on learning orchestral music until I found your channel. I'm a pig in mud at the moment. It's challenging but soooo satisfying.
This content is pure gold and such a fun engaging gentleman. Thank you so much!
You are authentic and sincerely. All the videos that I saw from others composers are so ready composed and they say that was spontaneous. I was wondering am I so untalented, why I have difficulties..you saw the right process..
finally someone not writing "beats".
and he's shown me how to mak emy favorite chords 1 5 10 I think he said..
Spoofy Media I think he just raises the third by an octave
what is 10?
@@Medellinish _baby don't hurt me, no more_
Jokes aside - I don't know what 10 is, my understanding is that there are only chords 1-7 within a key.
* Unless it's chromatic, where any note counts within an octave and I suppose there are 12 chords?
@@quinn9598 8,10,12 are the same notes C E G but 1 octave higher.
So the 10 would be the third raised one octave.
The 1 5 10 is a triad with the third raised an octave.
You are such an inspiring chap, thank you so much for doing these videos. Not only do I learn something with each one, but they make me smile, and this year it's important to keep doing that. Much respect, Guy.
Guy, I find your videos very inspiring. Well done production value (takes a lot of time I know) with a fair amount of humor mixed in. On occasion you’ve had me laugh out loud waking my wife up late at night.
As a long-time guitar player / singer songwriter. you’re stretching me to develop my chops on the key board.
So much thanks to you. Will
This is life changing. I learned more from this video than any other video, ever, full stop. Seriously, I wish I saw this 30 years ago, it would have eliminated SO MUCH confusion over the years. 🤯 I've just never had it explained to me properly I guess. Thank you!
Love this dudes humor. Thanks for the tips
I am a heavy metal guitar player... and I LOVE your channel! I watch & listen to what you do - which is sooo different from what I do(being an amateur in every sense of the word!)- and the musical possibilities are just endless, it's all very inspiring. Love it!
Fishing, Gaming & Guitars How heavy are you?
@@victoza9232 about 225 ;0) lol
@@TonyHookedonVanlife You got my joke, right? : )
@@victoza9232 hahaha yes 👍
Step recording var nytt for meg. Takk for fine videoer og inspirasjon. Hilsen fra Norge.
One of the great things about your tutorials Guy,is your Commentry throughout means I can listen without watching and still know exactly what's happening.
Haha..the bassoon! My sis won the semifinals of the BBC young Musician of the year on her bassoon on in the year Freddy kempf won with his Rachmaninov…who said the bassoon wasn’t anything more than just an orchestral instrument…love the bassoon!! It’s just such a beautiful instrument!
Thank you Sir❤
Guy, you are amazing guy!
I watched like half of the video and was inspired by the sound of harp and started my own track. I used an old VSL Harp, it sounds amazing! And I tried arpeggio. And it worked!
3.5 hours and it's almost finished.
Thank you for your neverending inspiration and positive vibes
30 seconds in and I already love your personality.
Oh my goodness wow! 😂 I have started so many pieces of music and been unable to finish them getting exhausted mentally after part one/intro. This is fascinating to watch the process of Guy writing. He just keeps moving! My brain has so many meltdowns it’s frustrating. This has taught me that knowing your library of sounds, how to do things technically and music are like a holy trinity. I think I just need more hours put into it. Will definitely consider the course! Thanks Guy 🙏🏻 You must be unlocking so much talent in the world ❤
I don't know a damn thing about music theory, but I am absolutely loving watching you build these song bits. I have learned from you how to take the ideas in my head and transfer them to shareable medium. I find that my ignorance of music theory has not stopped me from doing this. Such a relief to be able to get these bits from my brain into a DAW and clear some much need CPU space in my head. I already had most of the sound libraries that you use in Kontakt, but no way to actually play them until I found a decent MIDI convertor for my guitar. I have a keyboard but it mostly serves as a drink coaster and ashtray space as I cannot play it....at all....not even a little, except to test sounds in the libraries. Your videos have enabled me to a huge degree. THANK YOU! I have a renewed love of music thanks to you.
Your simplicity and humility (and sense of humour too) makes this delightful to watch. And your composing chops are great too! Thank you for sharing. Cheers from Argentina.
Guy the Goat🐐❤️
Thanks again Guy for a great peek into composing step by step. I’ve been watching your videos for a couple of years now and they have helped me a great deal. All the best to you!
stumbled across your channel earlier and i must say, its refreshing to get a real-time view of the creative process!!!
it often feels like all my other "music theory" searches have been just what a C note is and how many white/black keys there are on a keyboard. like sure, i'd love to understand my chords and scales better, but those videos just leave me feeling inadequate and i go back to just dragging notes around until they sound good.
seeing the live process of introducing instruments and maybe only using them for just a slight flourish is really enlightening. previously, i've concentrated on trying to use each instrument i add as much as possible... you've really shown me how its OKAY to add a section JUST for one tiny addition!
Wonderful video, thanks for this, fascinating to see the creative process at work. There's a temptation to think that composers such as yourself, simply sit down and simply play it straight off the bat. It's great to see that it's a process, try a chord, find another chord that sits with it and work your way through it. For me, a self-taught dabbler, this is hugely motivating, thank you!
And he said, "Let there be drums," and there were drums.
DREW 😂😂 magic
In the begning there was nothing, but darkness. God's spirit was hovering admists that darknes. So he said: "Let it be lit"
It’s such a great moment when you find a teacher that resonates with you. That moment is now. Thank you!
"What did I play?"
Retrospective Record! Just use it after you play it the first time. :)
I know I keep forgetting about it!
I was just about to write the same thing. :D That's such a great feature, changed completely my workflow, because there's so many situations where I play something nice when just jamming and trying to figure out what to do and hit something nice, but then when I hit the record: crashboombash. :)
I growing for your lessons 😊😊😊 thx ❤
I love your sense of humor! You make writing music look fun!
Awesome. So glad I found this channel
I V X in the left hand is sooo nice. Something I will borrow for sure. Thank you!
4:30 with ableton you can click on "capture" and it captures what you just played without rec
I love the idea of committing to a structure and then writing to it. What a great way to stay focused.
Guy, your videos are both incredibly informative and pure comedy gold. Keep up the great work!
loved watching this process. thanks for sharing!
BLESS YOU! 😁🙏 (currently trying to pull together a piece of score for final project of my MIDI class.😆) JUST WHAT I NEEDED! 🥰
Guy when adding the fast string arpeggios that literally transport you to the heavens: “it’s alright”
Absolutely bonkers, this is THE video I’ve needed... how to START and where to go. ANNNNND, you did it in Cubase and I always learn something new. Thank you Guy! All the way from Arizona.
Brilliant. Such a brilliant... guy.... ;)
I'm doing my GCSE composition work at the moment. I had no idea where to begin with composition and this video really helped!
i feel so happy when my thoughts align with guy's
Guy, don't let this go to your head, but you are positively brilliant! One of these days could you give us supplicants here a bio of your musical training and past experience in music? Thanks for the inspiration and your generous teaching!
THANK YOU
Awesome tutorial beautiful very exciting live example of composing very talented musician composer and Teacher
this guy's humor is on a completely different level
I got a lot out of this
Thanks for your whimsical Whimsey form the start to the finish
That's Great
Another enjoyable video from you...
Since they’re already dozens of comments mentioning how nice the song sounds or reminding you about Cubase‘s retrospective record feature, I’m going to remark something else instead:
I noticed that in this video we can’t see your mouse pointer. It’s not a big thing, but seeing it makes it easier to follow what you’re doing... and I’m 99% sure that in older videos, we actually COULD see the pointer. (So my guess would be that you changed something in your screen recording setup recently that inadvertently also excludes the pointer from the video.)
Yes - fixed it. It was a preference in the screen cap software that got turned off during an update
Good to know!
Thank you Guy. I'm really enjoying these.
Come on man!!! Don't you know not to release videos while I'm at work :)
Can't wait to get home in the studio now. Thanks for all you do.
💐 blossom in my heart with your nice & valuable tutorial . Mr. Guy michelmore, i Thank You So Much...! 👏👏👏
Two features that I wish existed in all DAWs. Always record for MIDI (this is why I like the Studio One's Scratch Pad)- SO I can goof around and if i have a great idea, I have a copy of it, I don't have to re-create "great" ideas all the time. The second, which is what I miss the most about my Korg Karma, is being able to hit a chord that sounds pretty , and quickly assign that chord to a PAD. This way you can make up a few pretty chords, and easily move between them using a PAD. The Kork M3 has this, which is one of the reasons why I am thinking about buying one.
Hi Guy, when another score step by step ? Peace from France
I love what you have created! It makes me feel so relaxed!
Love this Guy!😆I find your videos very useful and inspiring. Thanks for posting.
I've literally been planning on making videos in this exact same format. I love it. Long form videos of people doing interesting things are my favorite. I want to take people through my recording process for each song I write/record and release.
I love this video. It was so great.

You are the guy, Guy!
OMG! Guy you help everyone of us! thank you so much for your inspiration and help! Sadly, I Am already taking a theory corse so I won't be able to join urs but I watch your vids everyday! Thx Guy! ^^
Watching the process of your create in this video was one of the most inspiring things I've ever witnessed. Definitely gonna tune in for the rest of your vids!
Thank you very much,sir.
Cubase should invent a rehearsal button that records for ten minutes, if you then forget what you played, you can look back and bring it back up. It can be assigned to a keyswitch. So if you have not pressed record it automatically comes on. Whenever you play. It would make life a bit more simple,
It's in Cubase Pro .. Retrospective Recording ...I use it a lot :-)
Definitely helped! I'm a solo pianist, so I think my biggest problem was not breaking it down into sections and just using instruments to play large parts.
Love it - there you go that's it lovely!
17:35 'We're going to load up a harp!!!!!'
Fantastic video Guy, thanks for being so honest and thorough in sharing your working practices - I've learned so much from this channel
Really fascinating... creating art and sounds great too.
This is one of the best videos of teaching music production and composition. I love your teaching method and how transparent you are, in showing that you'll make mistakes, Clean and correct it. This is so amazing.
I have just found a new music teacher. I'll follow you back to back. I'll also have to take one of your courses.
God bless you for all you do. Please, how can I communicate with you personally?
I love this. I haven't yet scored for anything but the music I create and release follows this flow therefore a lot of my music is "cinematic".
Thank you for your brilliant content which inspires me to keep creating and I want to point out how much I admire your playful attitude 🎉😊
You're awesome mate, love the personality as well as the content!
hello Guy, Shimi here from Rochester NY usa, loved your video on composing ,
I'm contemplating moving my setup from a larger formal dining area in the house to a smaller spare bedroom/office. Would I be right in thinking it will be easier to treat? Not to mention I don't think my wife will allow me to put too many tiles on the walls in this larger room! Although, I think I'll be using that LED backlighting! My kids will love that! I've only just started watching your videos Guy, but you're inspiring me to just make music again, and I can't thank you enough for that.
thanks for sharing this stunning piece of very informative & yet emotional tutorial.
Great video! Really helping me get over writer's block. Your process is pretty similar to mine but with 10 times less getting up, pacing around, getting ice, eating said ice, going to the bathroom, noodling on something on guitar, and groaning in between takes.
...eating ice?
@@Jimbob-hp6ud Yeah, like ice cubes
Congratulations for the competent tutorial on piano, am learning a lot from it, keep it up
Still my favorite harp too! Using the First Edition Performance patches even (tho without the ancient tool these days.) Those gliss variations just have such an appealing sound and texture.
Tried enrolling in the course but the checkout function seems to be broken at the moment.
You're doing a chord shape there, with a root, fifth and a tenth on the top. I've just tried that with my left hand and I think I need to go to casualty! You must have WAY bigger hands than me. Great sounding chord though, I might have to step-edit it rather than play it, lol.
You make it look and sound so easy and without a score.
That was amazing. A mini masterpiece. You've just gained a subscriber.
the rolling piano triad becomes annoying. the layering is too much and becomes smaltz . love your ideas, but this one was ill fated from the start with the rolling piano triad. you are amazingly talented and i enjoy every one of your broadcasts, I learn with each one, even if it was realizing what I dont like. Thank you for making this available.
Can you demonstrate how to create a realistic portamento with a string sound? Really beautiful music in this…I like the high violins in this and the bass piano chords against the right hand notes are so Lush! ❤
You have a beautiful musical mind!
This piece made me cry, Guy. You're the best! ;-;
Maestro, I love your videos... You are composing more often with a NON-template approach than with a giant template. I like these kind of minimalistic painting on a blank canvas. At first glance it seems for me that this kind of composing is much more modern. Where do you see the advantages of using a blank sheet of paper...? Thank you!
It works far better for this kind of tutorial. On a big scoring job where I have to produce a really big superhero sound I need a big template and building it from scratch takes days. So the answer is you need both. But the blank sheet is really refreshing and helps get a more modern sound.
@@ThinkSpaceEducation Thank you!
32:10 Man did i feel the hype rising! Very lovely piece😊
Thank you SO much Guy! This was SO helpful - so glad I came across this!! This session has confirmed to me that I am on the right track as an emerging film composer! You are awesome and I look forward to continued study with you!
Wow Sir! I find this very very inspiring and interesting! In fact I’m already make my music in quite similar way but when I listen to you, discussing with your self about the chord progression and so on I feel like I’m developing my own creativity as well. So, thank you so very much for doing this and you’re kindness to share it. 👍🎵🎶🎹🎺🙏
