Every DIY video should be like this. Thought I was going to have to go through the hassle of a dealer to find a key then pay $50-100. Went out to my 2008 6.4 and this worked like a charm
I’m sure that has been a ford secret for a long time but the unnamed tech who released it to you is the unsung hero here, he has a good heart and couldn’t keep letting the public get screwed by these lost wheel lock keys, so he waited until the next guy with a good heart came along that needed to know the secret and he shared it with Ron because he knew Ron would relay his message clearly to thousands, thanks so much to both of y’all.
O my goodness I have been looking everywhere on how to drop this tire without the key, thank you for posting this!!! seriously I am going to try this as soon as possible.
Short video, to the point, with good close ups.....GREAT JOB!!! Ford didn't know what I was talking about, the guy was likely 19 and told me that my ignition key was the thing I need to unlock my spare tire.
This is genius thank you! Just spent an hour with my arm between the frame and the bed trying to pry off the key with some channel locks on a 2010. Will try this now. I removed the key a while ago on another truck. They hooked end of the winch rod will fit right in after. The easiest way to do this is to remove the winch (two self tapping bolts) and knock it out with a hammer. I also like to fill the winch mechanism with some kind of rust proofer/ lube (white lithium/ fluid film/ etc).
03 F-150: beat a 14mm extraction socket onto the lock device with a hammer. Lowered tire. Socket stayed on the locking mechanism. Took off the lowering device like shown. Locking mechanism came off when I tried removing the extraction socket. Now works with just the tool under the hood. Did all of this in about 30 minutes. No problem... you can do it! Oh yeah... thank you!
So after fighting with this situation on the side of the interstate and a tire change on the road, now I know. Thank you Sir. I appreciate you sharing. Yokoten!
So this is the second video I found on how to remove the lock, the first recommended one at about 2/3rds the way through mentions that "If the spare tire is on the carrier you will first have to figure out a way to get it down to remove the lock" Well that was a "FAIL" video and a complete waste of time. Then off to the side I saw your video and clicked on it. Very very helpful clue about the 14mm socket!!!! Grabbed a cheap 12 point 14mm socket and one of my very long locking extensions and "viola" ! Lock removed in just a few seconds! Problem perfectly solved! Ironically, I am going on a road trip tomorrow with my "new to me" F250 SD and just wanted to check the spare! Thanks again!!😁😁😁😁
Is there a crime wave of stealing spares going on? Im with you, man. I'll take my chances of spare ending up on the black market. Thanks for the great video. In going to go check my spare now.
Thank you Thank you Thank you! I used your method but used a 6 point 9/16" tapered socket which is 14.3 mm bought at nothern tool as they sold individual sockets. One other thing i had a little trouble getting the plastic tube off so I drilled a hole through it and inserted a screw driver through which made it much easier to twist turn abd pull it off. My tire came down much easier than i imagined it would.
Another good source for single sockets is a pawn shop. Two of my local pawns have loose sockets in buckets, just take a pair of rubber gloves with you.
my old 12-point 14mm sockets were too loose on the lock and would not bite and the only 6-point I could find in my toolbox was 1/4" drive. I found success with a 9/16" 6-point socket and was still able to pry the lock out of the socket when I was done. Thanks for saving me a bunch of time and money!
This is a super video. I watched another earlier of someone cutting the spring. I will say that I tried alot of times and almost gave up until I read the comments and found that the 17mm socket was the one that worked for me. Thank you Ron and all those that commented. Only thing I purchased was a cheap 24inch socket extension from harbor freight. Again, thanks. GREAT video.
Great video, this just helped me get the tire down on my 2011 Superduty. Only difference was the socket size, after pounding on the 14mm and 3 foot extension for a few swings it didn't go on. I checked the face of the socket and could see I needed a bigger one, ended up using a 17mm socket. Everything else worked as you suggested it would. At the end I threw the lock and key in the garbage and left with the regular crank same as the jack.
Thanks buddy You are a life saver 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏, bought a truck went to check my spare and Yes was surprised to lol was working on how to and saw Your Great video 😮 thanks again GOD Bless America 🇺🇸
2017 Superduty didn't have a security key but the spare tire was in the bed. After watching the video i was able to just crawl under, remove the plastic tube/guide, pop the security bit out with a screwdriver and replace the tube/guide. Finally got the spare in the stock position on the winch now and can use the regular jack equipment to drop/raise the tire. Took 15 mintues maybe from start to tire in place and tools away. 👍
That was a good video, to the point, likeable guy and you made it look easy . I’ve been trying for a couple days to do this- I’ve heard use a 9/16 socket, a 14 mm socket and the latest was a 17 mm socket. Around the security part of the hoist mechanism on mine is a plastic or rubber housing that so far has prevented me from being able to pound a socket over it. Tried cutting the spring underneath with a grinder and no bueno. Mine has some kind of indestructible part in the center. Story of my life- every time I find a video that makes it look easy, my setup is just a little bit different. I wish I had a gun that’s barrel fit in the hole -
Excellent idea I’m dealing with the same problem , I’m looking for the tool they’re not selling anymore at ford , so I will do the same to take the key of and use the long rod. Thanks for your teaching
Thanks for taking the time to put this video out, just bought this 08 f250 and just checking my spare to see if it was inflated and to see if there were going to be problems I could encounter ( better in my garage than on a rainy night somewhere ) of course no key to be found, first thing I do when coming across a problem is check UA-cam saw you're video, perfect, I know I would've tore up something getting the spare out, Thanks Again
Thanks; it worked great, although I needed a 9/16in to fit. Since I damaged the socket I went ahead and forced the two parts together on a vise. Now I can use a 3/8in drive extension and ratchet to raise/lower the tire.
This was extremely helpful! I tried using sockets, but they were too hard. What did work for me was a spark plug tool - it was soft enough to hammer on.
Thanks so much for this video, I was having the same exact problem with this with my 2003 f150. Took a couple of tries but I finally got it with a 17mm socket to lower my spare tire, so many rust chips. Then I got the spare key tire lock off with a flat head screw driver just like in the video, but my 17mm socket came off first then I got the lock off afterwards. Took about 45 minutes for me, my neck is a little sore though. For those of you who have an early 2000s f150 try using 14mm-17mm sockets.
Thank you!! I have a F250 2015 p/u and discovered o had no key when getting new tires a couple months ago. Went to ford dealership they tried a kit of different keys without any luck. They recommend I buy another spare and keep it in the bed. Frustrated so will give this a try snd get rid of the lock.
Thanks for the help! Great video! I couldn't get the 14mm on, so I tried the 9/16"(from the comments) and it worked great. I could lower the spare on my new to me 2005 F350 and take off the anti-theft device. I also got rid of a rattle that has been bugging me, a large rock was on top of the wheel bouncing around while driving :-)
Great solution, it took a 17 mm socket for my 2011 F-250 Super Duty crew cab. I started with the 14 mm. The lock pattern is basically Square when I shine the light on it. So I think that's the reason it took a larger one. But when I found the right one it worked like a charm. Thanks
Just because I want everyone to know. I tried it with a 14mm but mine was apparently too good. Didn't expand. Looking around I saw a piece of 1/2 inch metal electrical conduit and slid that in there. Went right on with a tap or two but would not bring the tire down. Enter Gorilla Super Glue Gel. Ran a little bead around the inside of the conduit, slid it on there and went and got a beer. Came back out, yanked on the conduit and there was the key, no muss, no fuss. Now I can use the standard spare crank no problem. No need to crawl under the truck, no need to remove anything, just glue and go. Love it.
It worked but not as advertised. I couldn’t get the cheap 14 mm socket to seat on the lock. So I cut up a rubber band on put it in the socket. I got it to bite and turned the socket to my surprise the lock broke at the stem of the lock and was in my socket. I thought oh crap part of it is blocking the opening. I tried the truck supplied crank anyways and it worked fine. So I didn’t bother removing the plastic sleeve. Thank you! Totally cost to me $10 for a 24 inch socket extender
That's cool and I just found out where is my 2001 Jack cause I was so frustrated I couldn't find the jack for my 2001 F-150 and it's good to know how to change your flat tire 👍👍 I'm glad to watch this clip
This does work, the issue I had was I never had a soft 14mm but I was able to pound a 9/16" socket over it. I just finished, it only took me about 15 minutes and now I can use the jack handle without the dumb key.
Worked for me after sawing some slots into a cheap (but not cheap enough) 14mm socket. Thanks for this video, it's hard to find a garage that knows about these trucks here in Europe.
Omg u are a jack of all! I have a 2010 f350 an it took a few more hits than urs but it damn sure worked!! 14 mm did not work but a 9/16 six pnt did the trick! Hell with these damn keys!!!
Thank you SO very much!!! We have an 06 F250 and we struggled for an hour trying to figure it out with no luck. The dealer told us to make an appointment and they`d order the key(expensive!) so I watched your video as a last resort before towing it to the shop and VOILA! It worked!!! You just saved us several hundred dollars in towing and parts and I cannot thank you enough. Much appreciated sir!!
Does the spare tire key "lock" the spare in the "up" (stowed) position? Meaning will gravity and vibration pull that spare tire down as you're going down the road?
Used the same 14-mm-socket trick on my 2002 F150. It was surprisingly easy to hammer on, and once on, the handle cranked the tire down with no problems. My problem arose when I stuck the anti theft thingy onto the crank and stuck it in at the wrong place. It fell onto the spare's wheel. Got rid of the hoist part of the anti-theft system using vise-grips.
It worked after the fact, had to get an old cheap 14 mm, and a long 3/8 extension, tapped it right on, lowered the spare no problm. Gonna drill a hole in the 14 mm while it is in the " lock mechanism, put a roll pin in , and just leave it on, and an old 3/8 ratchet, and long 3/8" extension with the tire tools/ jack.
So I used a 3/4” cpvc pipe to pop over the insert. I slowly wiggled the old inserted key out of the hole at the end of the tube. I tried with the 14-16 mm socket and no luck but the Inside diameter of the cpvc pipe fit perfectly enough on the dirty key to fish the old ones out. I did this for two of my trucks so I can no insert a new one. I bought a new key from Ford to have the matching set along with a new tire changing kit from orieleys. Total of about 150$ vs 460$ Ford wanted. I think Amazon may have an option cheaper yet. Which I am researching for the second truck.
thanks for the video but my 1999 F250 does not have the key. It's just like a Hex female fitting to bring the tire down. Took me some doing but I finally got it.
Well it worked for me. If you use multiple extension and yoh hammer it for a while it still feels floppy, but it's not falling out it means that it's on but it's floppy because of the multiple extensions. I didn't have enough extension so I also added a long drill bit in the end and slowly line it up with head of key using a flashlight, then hammer the end of the drill bit against end of extensions. Once it's stuck then I removed the drill bit and attach driver to end and reached under the car and around tire to turn it. Was award but you have to make due sometimes
Well now, that was a very good video. No annoying music and a friendly informative guy. I rate it a 10.
Every DIY video should be like this. Thought I was going to have to go through the hassle of a dealer to find a key then pay $50-100. Went out to my 2008 6.4 and this worked like a charm

Hard working good American with a good heart . Thanks
Dude your a life saver. I was stuck like a rat, no spare no key and your solution worked great thanks

buy another spare LOL
Thank you so much for the information bro and i did not understand why Ford Company make it difficult for the people

Worked perfectly. Your video was the undesirable key to success!
Glad it helped!
You just saved my sanity. Thank you!
This is gold! Worked like a champ
Awesome, Thanks! I just discovered that lock today.
2012 F-350 needed 17mm socket. Worked like a charm
It worked but not as advertised. I couldn’t get the cheap 14 mm socket to seat on the lock. So I cut up a rubber band on put it in the socket. $10 buck! Not bad.
Thank you Ron! Was about to cut the cable to drop mine a a newly purchased used truck!
Glad I could help

You are welcome!
This is why I love UA-cam!! This man solved the mystery for me..
Straight to the point, no much bla, bla, bla👍🏼😊
I am trying.
I suggest a 12-point 14mm socket (vs 6-point) if you have it...goes on pretty easily. (2005 F250)
Worked for me after sawing some slots into a cheap (but not cheap enough) 14mm socket.
Thanks for this video, it's hard to find a garage that knows about these trucks here in Europe.

Great I been trying to get my neighbors spare thank you sir
Perfection in a DIY video! Love this Hack! Sorry Ford Service Department (they wanted $325 to do this!)
Glad it helped! No disrespect for the Dealership but that is to much.
Thank you for the tips I did the same thing you are doing and wen I got the sper down the key was inside of the rim
14mm socket worked great for me. Thanks
I gave you a like at 2:11 yours was 14mm mine was 9/16 but it worked, thank you very much. Much Appreciated.
Thank you SO very much!!! We have an 06 F250 and we struggled for an hour trying to figure it out with no luck. You're welcome! I was their at one time (: Thanks for supporting my channel.
Typical american company.
Thank you for this video. I ran into the same problem. I didn't want to spend $60.00 for a replacement that may not fit.
Thanks for the video. Saved me a lot of time and headache. To the point, share the info, get on about your day. Thank you Sir.
Found your video just in time. Thanks
Perfect!
Great video thanks. 14mm would not work but 9/16 worked perfectly.
Awesome video and solution to a common problem.
Thanks 👍
This DOES WORK, THANK YOU!
Seriously saved me so much trouble!!!!!!!
Thanks so much for your video, definitely saved me from a headache.
THANKS , JUST RAN INTO THAT TODAY.
Thank you I have the same problem right now bro
I am going to give it a try
The process works. On my 2003 F350 it took a 17mm.
Thank f350 dually 2004 ford 9/16 socket worked for me
Does the spare tire key "lock" the spare in the "up" (stowed) position? Meaning will gravity and vibration pull that spare tire down as you're going down the road?
No it just keeps People from stealing it.
Oh My Gosh thank you thank you thank you
I have been battling this for over a year .
This was 💯 percent helpful
You are so welcome
Used the same 14-mm-socket trick on my 2002 F150. It was surprisingly easy to hammer on, and once on, the handle cranked the tire down with no problems. My problem arose when I stuck the anti theft thingy onto the crank and stuck it in at the wrong place. It fell onto the spare's wheel. Got rid of the hoist part of the anti-theft system using vise-grips.
Thanks so much for this video!!
I’m gonna try this on my used truck I just bought!
Good luck!
Great info it worked beautifully on my 2002 F-150! Thanks
THANKS SO MUCH!!!! Your video was the most helpful as I'm having the same issue. I'll try this!!
I was on the same boat, thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching! imagine being on the side of the road deep in the woods and this happening (: So glad that I check.
Thanks for the video, I hope you had as much luck fishing as you did with the lock.......
LOL No fish and No flat, but I was ready (: Thanks for watching.
Thanks man can't believe it actually worked! Greatful. I did end up using a 9/16 though like someone in the comments did
Nice work!
Apparently I used a high quality 14mm socket. Couldn't get it cover the key. I'm envious of your
(almost) immediate success.
Ya, you have to use a cheap one, when I talk to a mechanic he was very adamant about using a cheap socket, Thanks for watching.
@@channelron3593 Makes sense...cheap one will "Deform"
It Hass to be a six point socket. It cannot be a 12 point.
Thank You!!!!🙏👍🏻 This helped me out big time!
EXTREMELY HELPFUL...tHANKS!!!
You're welcome!
It works! I had to use a different size socket, probably beacuse mine was to hard and wouldn't form around the lock.
Ya you have to use a cheep socket, Thanks for supporting my channel.
You are life saver man!!!
Thanks! Glad that I could help.
Very good. I’ve hated that thing since ford made them. I lost my special little key socket so I was stuck .
For anyone out there who may be having issues-I had to use a 9/16” to get mine down 👍🏼
Same
THIS IS ABSOLUTELY THE BESTEST, EASIEST & FASTEST VIDEO EVER THAT'S SO FCKN ON POINT!!! RIGHT ON DUDE. AWESOME. EXACTLY WHAT I WAS SEARCHING FOR
You're welcome! I am still learning the filming aspect (:
Thank you!
Had to use a 11/16” Irwin bolt-grip to get it
Will this work on a Toyota Tacoma 2019
Not sure?

No problem 👍
Thank you very much I just took mine off awesome I really appreciate it man thanks for posted this video
Could you take the plastic tube off and crank it with out using the extension?
Maybe? would have to try.
Think the tire would be in the way??
thank you for making this i was wondering why my spare wouldn’t come done
Thanks for the video, it was very useful.
I couldn't find the key to get it out.
You're welcome!
it worked for me. Thank you!
Does it matter if it's a six or 12-point socket?
Good? am not sure? I would think the 12 point would slide over better?
QUESTION: After you have pried the lock out, what sort of crank do you need to lower the tire? What would the end look like?
the crank that I used was from and old 1978 dodge van, they all pretty much have the same flat ends.
A 3/8 Drive Extension will also raise and lower your tire
Well it worked for me. If you use multiple extension and yoh hammer it for a while it still feels floppy, but it's not falling out it means that it's on but it's floppy because of the multiple extensions. I didn't have enough extension so I also added a long drill bit in the end and slowly line it up with head of key using a flashlight, then hammer the end of the drill bit against end of extensions. Once it's stuck then I removed the drill bit and attach driver to end and reached under the car and around tire to turn it. Was award but you have to make due sometimes
Very good video. Cool dude 😎
Thanks! 👍
Well, that's easy. Many, many thanks!
You're welcome!
