Exclusive: James May drives the 2015 Ferrari 488 GTB

- The new £184,000 Ferrari 488 GTB is a clever and ruggedly handsome beast. And that could be annoying for James May, who has just ordered its £208,000 predecessor, a 458 Speciale.

This video looks like it came right from 1982.
derbigpr500 Dude, you have no idea what it was like 1982... do you remember BETA MAX? I don't think so.
***** I do, was born in '69. And he's partially right. I don't know how this upload was rendered or not, but the color saturation seems in some way to be from that era (keep analogue SLR filmrol in mind which were lying in the sun for about 2 months before developping them)
***** i still have a beta max from 1983, the quality is better than this clip.
GTI1dasOriginal
derbigpr500 Yer it's James May he's got a very 80's voice.
Let's be honest, nobody gives a damn about the car, we're all here for May
Mikikorcz Truth
That's a given xD
Mikikorcz I'm 40% here for the car, I mean it's the new Ferrari, and the reviews have only just been released, it's worth knowing a little bit about it no?
Preach
Preach
I can already hear Jeremy saying: Ferrari has launched a new model, the 488 gtb, which is faster, more pretty, the engine is turbocharged and looks angrier than the former model the 458... Now wouldn't someone be completely angry and deeply disappointed if they so happened to have bought the old, now useless previous model in the past few months? Especially if by circumstance this person so happens to find himself unemployed... (slowly looks at James with a smirk)
***** It was the same story back when James just purchased a F430 and the 458 Italia came out... Poor Captain Slow :D
***** Well during the doorsteps interviews he mentioned he tries to sell his Ferrari so he might get/already got the new one.
SpeedDaemon3 I think he was joking about selling it because he was no longer employed lol...James rules!
*****
Damn, that was perfect!
***** Because it just so happened that his unemployment was out of courtesy for Jeremy and the refusal to have a Top Gear without him. With that in mind, Jeremy would still take the piss.
458 looks nicer
23pyromaniac Yeah, Ferrari reached a peak when it was the 458 and the 599, now their lineup is just a bit uglier. Except for the California Turbo which is excellent.
Alfred Munkenbeck For me Ferrari reached peak with the 430. Well...as u can see it's matter of opinion and that's subjective :) (read this in May's voice).
Count Dracula I agree, 430/599 was just the last good looking Ferrari to me.
+ You can actually get a manual in 430....Ya beat that.
+kobyashi 458 sounds nicer too. This thing sounds like any generic turbocharged engine. What a shame..
Was this filmed with a shoe? The picture quality is shocking!
***** + editing, sound, camera angles, and anything to do with production is shit.
***** Those colours and quality hurt my eyeballs. I was expecting Arri Alexa not some shit tablet 720p camcoder ; /
+VirusTornado seriously, a standard go pro would have done a better job without any editing ...
+Rafał Łysiuk ....I think a tablet would do better than that.
i come here because mr.may
Same here
ABILFLORIDA ARTS Aren't we all here for that reason? ;)
TheBluMeeny yeah :D
ABILFLORIDA ARTS Same Here!
ABILFLORIDA ARTS I thought everbody is here for that reason
This video looks like it was shot in 2005
+Jack Hallauer no, 1997.
Terrible yes.
Steven silverman that’s why I like it
Basically the three of them should make a web series.
The editing on this was way below Top Gear and that's down to the budget but we know how good some stuff on UA-cam is and how amazing it can look. A little work and this could work.
I'll fucking edit it for them...for a small fee.
Kenshiro They're doing a show on Netflix. It'll be good.
Mark Rose not confirmed as far as I'm concerned
So I was going to check how many commments there are abou editing and production :) we can now all see that top gear isnt just about presenters. The trio worked very well together but there was huge effort to increase production value from season to season. If you saw this without knowing who James May is you would probably not even watch it till the end.
mastadriver I agree completely. I would not watch if it were not May. The production values of the first series were far better than this.
Kenshiro you need to take other things into consideration. Such as, music licensing, equipment used (boom mic's, cameras etc) and also the amount of people that get used to do all of the work. Top Gear was produced by BBC, a company that has a heavy wallet.
what sausage did you use to film this with?
Edd Stance Not only that, but the camera angles, and editing, the music is all shit compared to TG. James May though...
VirusTornado not only compared to TG but compared to XCAR, MotorTrend and even with Chris Harris the quality of video was very poor
It was actually a potato
***** hahahahahahahaa oh thats wonderful :'0 I can imagine Clarkson's voice saying that
Lucas C. Silva Chris Harris mentioned in his video the quality was not his fault.
Oh, you're flooring the Ferrari? Let me throw some music into the video so you can't hear it.
Poor James. REQUIRED to take it around Fiorano.Life is rough on him these days
What stupid person plays music while someone drive a Ferrari around a test track? Are you bloody mad?
Sunday Times does!
Twats...
bloody idiots.
Maniacs
bloody twats
I came here because of James May. Never mind the video quality or the editing (I think the editing suits him because let's be honest, he is old-fashioned and the editing style of the video is old-fashioned :P ), but still, Captain Slow more than makes up for it.
I agree
Exclusive: Ferrari 488 GTB drives the 2015 James May
you filmed that with a toaster? that is awful video quality
2:04 Wow he got that horribly wrong. Or just ignoring the existance of 288GTO and F40.
***** Seriously! First mid engined turbo V8 from Ferrari?!?
I think he was quoting Ferrari spokespeople.
***** I'm ashamed that it made me question my knowledge of Ferrari's history!
308 turbo was made as wel.
2812hans Was there a 308 turbo? I thought it was a 208 turbo, a tax break model for the Italian market. The irony of having Ferrari make a car with less power just for cheaper tax rates...
The first turbo charged, mid engine V8 Ferrari James? Was the F40 made by a different company?
Actually the 288 GTO was earlier than the F40
+Clayton Cortina Yeah you're right!! I forgot about that. So why does James say the 488 is the first Ferrari turbo V8?
+John Cooper everyone forgets the GTO for some reason
Losers
Booooring
One of the best cars ever made in automotive history. Stunning looks + amazing performance = perfection.
"Don't be a pussy," aaaand that is why Top Gear will be great on Netflix. Uncensored, uncut, can't wait to get the boys back.
If there's more videos on this channel with James May I will watch every single one of them.
"Alright now don't be a pussy." - James May outside of TG.
i miss the old top gear
Me too
Did we just witness James May power slide on the test track?
You know TopGear's over when James May isn't Captain Slow anymore
20NoobNoob01 There are rumors that James May is actually really talented behind the wheel and he's actually one of the fastest hosts around a track when it comes to driving cars because he's so technical and precise, but he never breaks the 'Capt Slow' character for the show
Hey, remember he was the Top Gear host with the highest speed (oh that Veyron in that german VW test track was epic!) in the show. Not even Clarkson was even close to him.
Kayone73 it wouldn't surprise now that you've said that, if those rumours were absolutely true
I didn't like how it looks but that glorious sound that 430 used to have has finally come back to this thing...
I love how no matter how amazing or huge the car is, they can bring it down to earth and put it in perspective. Driving a new Ferrari in Italy on a warm summer day... exactly right. Anyway you cut it, its a gilded lilly with chocolate sauce on top.
for a video released in 2015 the quality is absolutely rubbish
Mr. May, a small correction. The "pecheeew" noise on a turbocharged engine comes from the blowoff valve, not the wastegate. The blowoff valve is the one that releases the extra pressure into the atmosphere when you lift your foot from the gas pedal and by doing that you close the throttle so the pressurized air has nowhere to go, and is released in the atmosphere by the blowoff valve which creates the specific noise. The wastegate is a bypass valve that lets the exhaust gasses bypass the turbo when you are driving flat out.
defiantly came here for James May, not sure about that music they have put into the video though.
Great to have you back, James. Excited to see the new 458 when it arrives!
I'm here for May.
"Tonight James May says 'beep'."
Subscribed expecting more of James May, give the people what they want!!
May has always been my favorite. Good to see him back.
This was filmed on an old Nokia N95, right?
an iPhone would do better than this
God that's a gorgeous car. I've loved the 458 for such a long time, and this one just seems to be better in every way.
MicroKORGI Doesn't sound better.
this is a breath of fresh air actually.
May giving an actual well rounded non bias factual review.
I think I just witnessed Captain Slow in a drift around a corner...
1º. This is actually the third turbocharged V8 James ... you forgot the 288 GTO and the F40 .... no less.
2º Funny the sideways images taken from Ferrari's own footage, obviously that wasn't James drifting the car Chris Harris' style.
3º What a great car this 488 GTB, looking forward the Spider version.
Matt Owen Those footage are being used in basically every 488 GTB review I've watched, be it in Monkey's channel, Autocar, Evo, or AutoExpress. Probably it was Ferrari's own video footage.
Antonius Tyaswidyono They would always use footage of someone else properly drifting cars in Top Gear. It would just be so obvious when you couldn't see inside the car at all!
Talon276 No, they have actually drifted by themselves, whether scripted or not, maybe if no one of them could do it, they would ask Stig, that is, if he ever was there at that time, or any other pro driver that they might have just in case, but just because show is scripted, doesn't mean they do not drive themselves, or doing particular stunts themselves. I have seen where Jeremy and Richard is actually inside drifting from outside camera's, why he wouldn't, they aren't complete amateurs, despite scripting, which only applies to car degrading or their conversations and any other races. Richard actually was, like he stated himself, a ex-rally driver, or something like that, no...not rally, but one of those dirt races I think. Another thing is...why Jeremy couldn't drift ? he's been there since 90's, and James...well...he does own Ferrari, he must have had some fun times, time to time on some occasions, trying out stuff you know...don't be so negative and skeptical.
Matt Owen saw them live...the guys can drift!
Matt Owen James doesn't have any of the hoonerisms that Richard and Jeremy have, but James can drift
"dont be a pussy" best part of the video
His voice brings back memories. Where are the other two.
Sunday times driving has just made twice the amount of subscribers cos people hope to see May again !! what a guy !
As some others have said, James is off the mark on his comment at 2:04. This is most certainly NOT the first turbo mid-engine V8 Ferrari.
Actually, the first turbo V8 Ferrari was the F40. The greatest Ferrari ever built. Everything about the Ferrari F40 is timeless.
InvincibleFury That would be the 288 GTO.
@@trihardcx6743208GTB?
This is what I've been waiting for ! James May complaining about the door handle on a Ferarri. That's so him. Really refreshing because it's different from every 488 GTB video out there.
That bit is a jewel and makes the whole video. The people complaining about this video do not understand the meaning of the words 'national treasure'.
Good review, James ... and good to see you again. Don't be a stranger!
Apparently the camera was set to tungsten white balance for the entire shoot. And nobody bothered to color correct it to daylight. I love James, but this is atrocious.
Is it just me or does it still looks like the 458 Italia?
N.C. It's like 360 to 430... a reworked version of the same chassis.
well really with the 458 being so stunning it didn't really give them much room to improve
+West Is Best Looks much better than 458
The psst noise from a turbo engined car is not from the wastegate but the dumpvalve. Many people make this mistake. Surprising JM makes that mistake as well. The dumpvalve relieves overpressure from the intake manifold when the accelerator pedal is relieved. This keeps the turbo spinning and therefore decreses turbo lag. The wastegate prevents overpressure of the turbo itself and blows off air via the exhaust.
That 4 minutes and 42 seconds will be better than anything the "new" Top Gear will put out! Hands down!
car review was pretty crap lets be honest...
suckmysilencer747 What's missing is Jeremy mocking him after the review.
suckmysilencer747 Well, it's a crap Ferrari in comparison to other naturally aspirated models. It looks like a
3rd cousin once removed of the 458 Italia. It has a generic look about it too.
suckmysilencer747 your youtube username is the best lolol
suckmysilencer747 was not a review. promo video from Ferrari. Its just "JAMES MAY DRIVING A FERRARI" Thats it. Not James may's full review on a ferrari.
Ya lets be honest.... who cares its james may powersliding a Ferrari!!!!!!!
oh my god james may is drifting a ferrari!
Great to hear you back James!
It's so nice to hear James May going on and on about a car again.
Not as cute as the 458. I think i still think the 458 is still the better car and looks much better...
Dikabelo Center Marage . I use to be of the same opinion. the you rub needs time, it will warm up on you. the body kits however are trying too hard. the tri is slick and subtle.
Hopefully it does but the love for the 458 is too much. The 488 might be faster but I think its trying too hard like you say. 458 still remains the bench mark for a mid engined supercar!
I think that look exactly the same its basically a 458 Sagaris, with more vents and cuts for the intercoolers.
WAS THAT JAMES MAY AT 4:06 ....DRIFTING????? (brainfreez)
I could listen to James all day long, even when he's on about his Panda.... Genius May
Classic May. A lovely drive in the beautiful Italian countryside. Good weather, great food and Oh yes, the fabulous new Ferrari.
The sound editing for this release is beyond horrible and no particularly useful info on the car. Kinda pointless video. Yeyyy, James Mayy...??
I hate the v8tt. It personally sounds like crap.
Thank you
I prefer it to the disgusting cough Lamborghini's make.
Hah wow, you must have lost your hearing in the war.
Jack Hobbs . that v10 on huracan it's intoxicating.
Muano Mudzanani Yeah I'll give you that, Hurucan's have nice sounds but something about the 488's sound I just love.
Feels so good to see a new vid from one of these guys, but the camera work looks like 1990's style at some points LOL
It's good to see you again Mr. Slowly
That was a pretty dreary review.
The car is so ugly
+sander k nope
+sander k not rly...but as of late all ferraris have been luking fucking same.this luks like a cross btw 458 and la ferrari .
Well wat can u do its no lambo!!!!!!!
Lol if we are to mention anyone in the automotive world with a consistent design language, it's Lamborghini. The aventador was the last great lambo. Since then they've been absolutely lame.
+sander k I wouldn't say "ugly" but it's certainly not memorable in my opinion.
Nice to hear James may talking about cars again.
Great 3.2 Megapotato camera you got there!
I think the picture quality is fine. Let's see you guys do better!
I think it was a good review for what it was. Good to see Mr. Slowly again.
He looks quite confortable driving it in such small roads. Btw, I'm here for Mr. May, good to see him in good shape!
Long live James May!!!! As much as I'd love the job I can't deny your professionalism and slick to camera skills. Thank you for all the years of viewing pleasure I hope to see more in the future to come
Love the lack of the waste-gate noise. I think the lack of the noise keeps it classy
Man, it's good to hear him review a car lol. So nice
I am blind now and listening to this video was like listening to a childhood lullaby that one's parents would sing to them. The comforting sound of top gear. I wanted back damnit!!!
Really interesting to see the contrast between these cameras and those used on Top Gear - the latter must be amazing.
incredibly gorgeous car, this 488, the 458, 599GTO, 288GTO & LAFERRAI have always been my favorites..want to this compete against the 675LT.
good review, nice to see him not doing stupid top gear pranks and a serious review. Like him a lot better like this
More of this please!
Damn it shifts insanely quick!
The sound is awesome
That a boy James!!! Good to see you again in a hot Car! Good going.
Now I can never unsee that unsightly door handle.
Good to see Captain Slow back in action!!! Nice car too :)
Still such a beautiful car for me. So elegant
Less music more engine noise and higher resolution please. 720p nowadays with GoPros throwing out amazing 4k resolution is kind of weak. But great to see James back on the tube!
And James please don't replace your 458 Speciale with this turbo charged version. You got an instant classic!!
Even Captain Slow is going for speed in a Ferrari. Haha good work Mr. May! ;)
What was this filmed with ? And old Sony Ericsson ?
It's incredible what the Italian sun does everytime on James May's face.
Even James May doesn't know the difference between a turbo charger bypass valve and a wastegate. Wastegates don't make the noise you described, they function to control boost on throttle. Bypass valves make the relief noise you talked about....
Wherever did you find a VHS camera to shoot this with?
Actually the original mid-engine V-8 Ferrari was the 308GT/4 of early 1974, the 308GTB wasn't introduced until mid 1975.
It is just me or the filter used in the video gives that video game like feeling?
Excellent job ! interesting color
Hi James,
Don't forget that this is not "the first turbo charged, mid engined, V8 Ferrari", there was the 288 GTO and then the F40.
Marc
Nice to see you back James! Now if we can only get you back together with Clarkson and Hammond....life will be good again! Fortunately, from what I've heard, that might become reality soon!
Looks fine. Hope you had fun and lunch worked out well. Cheers.
James, the turbo noise is BRAAAPAPAPAPAPA
Maaay!!!. Mate its been a while
awesome video
Just scanning the channel so is the Sunday drive channel the new T.G?
Actually the first Ferrari V8 turbo production car was the 208 but nobody can be blamed for forgetting that
one, designed specifically for the Italian tax regulations (2 liters only). It was one of 308 series too, the one that still lived up to the 458. Not exactly an overpowered car though....
Loved it May. Make more!
How do you get the films?
need more james may
