As a 71 yr old man, I’ve seen a lot of changes in the world. What I see for the future is people becoming less and less connected with reality. I see people “working” yet actually doing nothing. Manual skills will be lost because no one will be left to teach them. A very few intelligent humans will be left to develop new technologies and new ideas. The majority of the civilized world will simply drift aimlessly in some artificial utopia.
I’m glad I’m an old man. Don’t want to see that day.

It's amazing how many people, especially younger ones, are really useless! It is primarily the schools and the educational administration that has gone to the dump. With much love, I beg to disagree both with you AND with @kathypaine6689. I think I understand where you come from but I dare say that this is the same attitude exhibited by people that still use horses for transportation or to work the farmland: the Amish from Pennsylvania. I have visited with them and I love them. However, they constitute nothing more than a curiosity at the present time BECAUSE we will never expect them to invent/discover the cure against cancer or develop the new technological invention that will help progress of knowledge of the Universe of which we are part.
Aside from the extreme DANGER that certain post-modernist haters of humanity, I can't be more thankful for the invention of machines that not only save human labor but do so with the IMPLICIT (unfortunately, not explicit) intent of providing us, HUMANS, with the leisure time to pursue further our curiosity about the Universe itself, as well as the celebration of human life with even more beautiful expressions of Arts in all its forms.
Funny story. As a child I loved the idea of horses (as I saw them depicted in Epic movies shown in my childhood movie theaters. I kept alive that love for horses (in the real flesh and bones) until I had a chance to visit a horse farm as an adult and realized that "horses" meant to clean away all their manure, to get rid of all the hey wet by their liquid discharges, it meant having to deal with pesky huge "horse" flies that gave bites worthy of a dog, etc. Soon, I was grateful to live in a clean, comfortable, air conditioned home that allowed me to "order" a movie online allowing me to see it when it was fit for me time wise.
Technology in itself is not evil, just like a steak knife is not evil. What is evil is the uses to which we, humanity, put these new tools.

Today's smart phone is a mini computer. The problem isn't in the physical electronics that make up what a smartphone is - it's the personality of people using them. It has more to do with whether people are mature or not, of good character or not, are truly productive or not. Smartphones today are light years ahead of the entirety of computers that were aboard the Apollo 11 Space mission in 1969! In comparison your smartphone is a supercomputer in your pocket. They have revolutionized communications, entertainment, education, and productivity yet some of the lowest common denominators of society use them for criminal acts, pornography, trolling social media and even based political propaganda. The world has always had problems and will continue to as we evolve, hopefully as a better species, technology just advances everything, exposes more all the time by using the web. You're forgetting that medical science has cracked the code in the battle against cancer because of computer tech. Tech is what you make it akin to a library. You can choose all kinds of books based on fiction and nonfiction, history, science, medicine, business, on careers of every conceivable construct OR you can just read comic books. It's in your hands no matter what is out there.

I have to laugh at all these ridiculous images of ‘me’ …. In Paris, ‘me’ at the beach……’me’ here, ‘me there…..but, you never see the here, there, the Paris the anywhere…..because the only bit they care about is the ‘me’! It's interesting how some people want to insist that the technology they grew up with or are used to is all the technology they need. They also forget or don't know how revolutionary their preferred technology was. "Before these devices we drove to someone to speak to them." Before that, you wrote a letter that maybe was delivered the same day, or not. And if you wanted to speak to someone, you had to walk to their home, or if higher on a social ladder, you rode a horse or had a carriage take you for a visit.
The telephone itself revolutionized our ability to talk to people. Later, some feared that the breakup of Ma Bell would end all innovation in telephone technology. And people thought it ridiculous that you might buy a telephone instead of having the phone company install one or more phones in your home or office.

Seems to me, the threat is to people who are addicted to over sharing. I’ve never understood why people have to post pictures of themselves doing boring everyday things, so the whole world can see them. But I have even greater difficulty understanding why people look at them. If I don’t know you personally, why do I need to know what you ate for breakfast, or whether you enjoyed it? Why do I need to know what bus you used, or what bedlinen you like? It makes no sense to me.
If I’m idle and I have no book to read, nor access to a tv/radio, I will watch some random UA-cam, to pass the time. I’ve never posted a video, whether a selfie or something I saw, and my Facebook has not been updated in over a decade. I don’t have any other social media accounts.
This prediction will, if it comes to pass, affect me indirectly. But it could end up being a good thing. It will be easier for real life people, like me, to find and interact with each other.

100%, I agree. The obsession with ME, ME, ME is destructive. Life is enriched with input from others. Humanity will be quickly destroyed without relationship to others. If you are picking out how you want to have sex virtually, because all your choices come out good and satisfies your own narrow view of what brings you over the edge, there will be no human procreation. I got rid of Facebook within 3 months of first using it. It took away way too much of my time, to do the things I needed to do to heal people, to be in nature and feel the sun on my face, etc.... My God, what has happened to this current generation?

i HATE everything he is saying. Going to a movie theater with people is interconnecting with humanity. "Families" don't do movies at home, they do movies - each in their own rooms. They don't even do dinner together. They each take their take out dinner bags to their own room and jump on the digital roller coaster. There is no "grounding" anymore. People are now more likely to live alone - not get married - and not build relationships. It's all instant gratification. If someone doesn't please you - you block their calls or access. There is NO working things out. We are loosing our HUMANITY.....

Smart Phone, GPT, Computer always trying to stay on the cutting edge of knowledge, BUT, and this is a big buy as a prepper, I always can Scythe my hayfield, build a manual bailer with hammer, handsaw etc, and unplug in the woods and wildcraft. Balance is what is missing in most people's lives. Technology is a tool, use it to help enhance your life, if it's not doing that you are using the tool wrong. The free/ cheap education alone makes this tech so amazing. The library of Alexandra in our hands.

The Covid experience shows that people want to get out and want to socialize. People were bored at home. The profits made in the outdoor sport industry, (hiking, hunting, back packing, fishing...) go against this notion. I do see technology taking place of other technology. I also evolution. The desktop computer to the laptop, to the notebook. There have been mergers from the phone (a communication device), personal assistant and the internet enabled notebook to create the smart phone. I don't see meta as what is next. Humans are tool user. Smart phones are tools. I don't see smart phones as an integration as far as cyborg augmentation. As a tool smart phones are still in that area of communication and information gathering. People can leave the room, and not go to the library and people through the covid experience still want to interact interpersonally to reaffirm reality. Interaction in a society or one on one is still a human need and the covid experience shows that.

I think it would take the support of a lot of people to establish and maintain such a "primitive" technological ecosystem, but I think it is totally doable. This possibility is real, and we must plan and take action to avoid it, or we will lose everything that is truly individual. Then slavery will reign forever, and is that what we really want?

  • @jakeaurod
    @jakeaurod 9 місяців тому +2

This guy seems so smart and so sure about so many things, and yet he is so wrong about so many of them.
The Selfie was not invented a few years ago. People started taking pictures of themselves as soon as cameras were invented that had timers. If you include the idea of hiring a photographer to take the picture for you, the selfie has been around since the beginning of photography. If you include the idea of other forms of visual depiction, such as painting and sculpture, selfies have been around for thousands of years, tens of thousands if you include hand-outlines on cave walls that state the equivalent of "This is me, I was here once upon a time".
The fax machine didn't come and go in our lifetimes. Not only is still in use in some places for some purposes, but it was invented in the mid 1800s using telegraph lines before most of our great-great-grandparents were alive. Telegraph is basically an early form of email or texting.
Yes, people go to the theater to socialize. Sure, they don't want to hear other people talking and interrupting, but they want to hear them laugh and chuckle and cry. It reinforces social expectations for expression and roles in situations. It creates and/or promulgates culture and cultural expectations or subversions of it. Sometimes a friend lives far enough away that it's more convenient to meet in the middle and spend time watching entertainment at a theater, as well as eating out and shopping and playing at the arcade. Not eveyone wants to do everything at home with the people they're stuck at home with.
And I'm not sure how people didn't see the smartphone coming. The job I had in the early-mid 2000s required me to have a cell phone, wireless Palm Pilot, camera, laptop and I knew and hoped and predicted that someday these would all be one single device, a small tablet, because electronic tablets had already been tried by Microsoft in 2002 and by Apple in the mid-90s (Newton).

Thats just it, why would or should we want to be like a programmed format similar to a CNN, or FOX news etc.. being so poised, polished to the point of artificiality that who you engage with feels no connection or substantive relation to you the sender of said content.. It ends up making us all like Meta zombies.. like where do I plug my brain into the AI so I can avoid life at all.. Too much to lose, not enough juice in that Tech idea worthy of the lemonade ! By the way selfies existed when cell phones had cameras, just like in the flip phone era..lol

I was talking to my husband, the A. I . tried to change my writing three times. I was writing about some polemic, negative issues to explain some facts, and the A.I. attempted to change the world or express something positive. And asked me if I really didn't want to accept the idea. I was talking about History, not to send a negative review. The machine tries to change my mind even if I try to write my negative thoughts about anything. It is not freedom. It happened in comments in a post, on Facebook, and in one email to my sister-in-law explaining one particular part of the History of Brazil. So, Google controls you.

How sad, that we have to make movies an at home only experience. I remember seeing any number of big blockbuster movies in the theater that gave me an experience that you just can't get at home. It's far more than your screen and your surround sound. It's the excitement of an opening night crowd anticipating the latest Star Wars movie. It's the kind of bond you feel with the rest of the audience as the movie provokes laughter, fear, surprise or wonder. I think it makes for a more immersive, escapist viewing experience.
Yes of course we all enjoy movies at home and always will, but I feel sorry for future generations who will never have that in-theatre experience.

Totally assuming and making an ass out of himself and me. No sir, I will and looking forward to no Cell phone, no surveillance device. Incidentally there are some of us who do not use the pushed, non-private cloud storage. Have it turned off and never store anything on cloud period. We will find ways to communicate without cell phones.

I am as old as the professor I think - and I will NEVER permit computerization to take over my life to that extent. I have Google home and it can set alarms and show me recipes - I have a droid that I use, and I do banking through it - but I cannot conceive of letting an app or a robot do my banking FOR me. I use security cameras on my buildings, but I wish I didn't have to, and I don't use them because I need to use the tech, I use them because I need to protect the buildings. I also cannot conceive willingly giving up social interaction, I thought I was going to just go mad during COVID. No, it is only meant to be an aid, if it becomes more than that I have no interest, and I know that my beloved, who is quite a bit younger than I am, also has no interest in going there. People matter SO much more.

He has a few good points and I’m sure he is correct in concept for younger Generations, however he misses a few points about Social interaction which I don’t think he fully understands on a psychological level. Cinemas are a bout a Shared experience on a huge screen, seeing something for the first time with friends and strangers!
When Black Panther came out I watched it in a full cinema and at the end 500 strangers all stood up and gave a standing ovation 👏 clapping and cheering over a great piece of cinematic escapism ! I can give other examples!
We will have personal devices akin to smartphones for a long time to come! While there are Chip inventions, only idiots will trust this kind of technology to be implanted!
Your guest also fails to realise the Evil being perpetuated by Governments and many global corporations and that People are waking up to all the evil. Slowly but it is happening.

We just got my 78 year old Mom a flip phone. She moved to a new senior building, and they no longer use landline phones. My poor Mom looked so sad because she had no idea how to use a cell phone. She likes the phone now and knows how to use it. But technology has to consider there is a senior population with disabilities etc. It's really sad how all this technology is taking over. I absolutely will not be using AI technology. I'm 46 years old and miss life before all this technology!
