Rest In Peace, Kentaro Miura. An absolute legend whose storytelling transcends and will continue to transcend forever. It’s impossible to put into words how much he touched my life with Berserk and that is also true with countless others around the world. Thank you❤️
Thanks for doing your part to bring more flames to his bonfire. I think his work will take on new life in this time of mourning as everyone shares their genuine appreciation and memories with the series.
To me, I think Guts character profile kinda resembles the good that exists in the bad, and Griffith resembles an evil inside the good. Because how they look is almost a polar opposite of how they feel. kind of like yin and yang
People are things. Made of matter just like everything else. We aren't special or exceptions to the laws that bind reality. In the end, your decisions and actions can neither be good or evil. It's just insignificant compared to this universe
And Guts´physical state reflects his life. He lost his left arm (Griffith and Casca), his eye (part of his sanity) and part of his hair turned white (indicating that he´s tired and stressed).
The white hair is interesting, not only do I get vibes of Yin and Yang with the hair-- at the same time. I wonder if the White Hawk promised will turn out to be Guts
I think the white hair part is more a reflection of how Guts is becoming more and more like Grifith. Ultimately he to will one day be faced with a choice to sacrifice his new comrades for power at the very end of his journey. Will he? More than likely not, but will his comrades sacrifice themselves for him? One thing is true, this story will not have a happy ending.
mrx00666 Remember what Skull Knight said? He told Guts that he should have only one person he cared about. He could´ve said this thinking that should the temptation arise Guts only need to sacrifice one person. However, we all know that it would be Casca and Guts wouldn´t sacrifice her to kill Griffith. Also, Guts said earlier in the manga that he would kill the Count with his own fleshy body so if he still thinks like this he won´t use the behelit
Actually Miura has stated that Berserk may have an ending that is less grim than expected. He stated that a plan was set for the ending, but is likely to change depending when he gets to it... so hiatuses
Guts is such a great protagonist. How rare is it to have such a badass and hardcore protagonist who's essentially death on legs, but is also human, and in some ways even vulnerable.
@@LegendSergio Technically Guts did have a goal after leaving the Hawk. He realized his love for swordplay and strove to battle stronger to further hone his craft not unlike Zoro. Then Griffith had to act like an overemotional woman and ruined everything.
Yep. I think there is some romance there that he didn't fully realize/comprehend. I think it's a mixture of brotherly/emotional/sexual love paired with hate and jealously to some extent. It's a very complex cocktail of all the emotions lmao.
There was also Griffith's dream before the eclipse. Everybody just handwaves it as 'just a dream', but in a story like this one nothing is wasted. Nothing is intended to be meaningless. Griffith dreams of an ideal life where he doesn't have to fight. In the dream, he's retired from the band, married to Casca with a son named Guts. Make of that what you will.
Robert Chaffins maybe it was the result of all the pain and stress he'd been trhough that year of torture. I think he also said " this isn't that bad " . I guess if he couldn't get his kingdom then he would've chosen a peaceful family life
A parallel between Guts and Griffith in the manga is that both men have suffered greatly in their lives, and reached their absolute lowest at some point, where they were given the decision to retain their humanity, or end their suffering by discarding their humanity. Grifith obviously picked the discarding route, while Guts retains his humanity, but is (where I'm at) always on the edge of holding onto his humanity despite wanting to discard it, vs becoming a rage-infused berserker with such disgustingly high determination that makes even the demons he fights question his humanity.
I agree, though Griffith's decision was much more blunt and in-your-face. And as you said, I don't think that Guts' decision has been totally concluded yet. It's been a rigorous process hanging on to his last shreds of humanity. I've seen some interesting takes on Griffith's current situation regarding his humanity and morals, but I won't say anything to refrain from spoilers.
+Aleczandxr Guts is supposed represent a normal human at their absolute most powerful, willpower-wise, but he's still human, and makes some really crazy decisions.
Even though Griffith decided to discard his humanity he had the most "friends" and the most opportunities to become a human again, while in Guts' case when he decided to maintain his humanity he had almost no "friends" and he had the most opportunities to lose his humanity. This also captured in Monster ( the anime ) when Johan is praised by almost everyone, it is something that truly exists in the real world as well which is kinda scary, for people to be like Griffith and Johan they almost always need to become evil and lose their humanity yet people like them are praised the most. Just try it out, try to act like Griffith or Johan for a couple of months and you will realise that everyone will start loving you, but you will see that, because it is not your true personality you don't love the people who love you, because they would not love you if you were your true self, and once that happens you should go back to being yourself... ( I am in high school so I have a lot of free time, and I tried acting like Johan for around a year, and boy did everyone start praising me, I was bored in the first place so I was fine with it, then I realised that I had no "true friends" so I immediately stopped acting like them, it is a pretty interesting thing to try and it is really not boring I even enjoyed it quite a lot except for the part when you no longer love anyone back ( except you family, very very close friends...etc ) because they don't love you, they love the person which you tried to copy for a few months because you were bored... )
I think what Miura did better than anyone in this business was create a villain that we all hate for the right reasons. Because usually if you hate a villain its because they suck, but if they are great villains you end up liking them.
Eh, you can justify Griffith actions. He was going to pave a mountain of blood to achieve a goal and we all knew it from the start, Zodd told us directly, but Griffith wasn't going to stop his dream just because his "friend" who left him for a year comes back. Griffith realizes the bodies he used to get to the top and the more he needs. He sacrifices his friends and becomes Femto, no longer the Griffith we, or Guts or Casca, once knew.
@@Coffeetime110 He brought heaven to earth and has done no evil deed ever since he came back though. If I show you everytime after he came back you would think he is the good guy of the story.
I feel like one the most gut wrenching things about the eclipse, besides the obvious ones, is that no one died with any dignity, except perhaps judeau, and they aren’t simply devoured. It’s not like a predator devouring prey, they’re all torn apart for entertainment and cruelty, and they’re used for psychological damage on their fellows, best see this in pippin we see him fight and defend his friends only to later see him from a distance seemingly unharmed only to realize he was torn to pieces and fit back together just to torment whoever has any hope in seeing him. All the band of the hawk died like tertiary characters which after the golden age arc none felt like, their deaths all felt unfair to their character which they absolutely were and it was completely on purpose. One of the most amazingly crafted moments in all of fantasy.
What I Love about Berserk is that when you think that you *finally* figured everything out about a character, yet upon reading for the X th time you change your mind and start doubting *everything* that you thought about before.
Guts didn't stop pursuing revenge because he " accepted that he was the cause of the band of the hawk's death", he just didn't want to lose something that is irreplaceable again
I think that love is a more accurate word for griffith´s feeling for guts, and I think it´s important saying this, because that makes the true diffrence.
If this was naruto, guts would have instantly forgiven Griffith for everything and chased after him because Griffith was his best friend. And casca despite all the shit he put her through would still be in love with Griffith, and the whole thing would end with guts redeeming Griffith with talk no jutsu
He would call him his best friend like naruto even though sasuke never considers him as his friend and then the entire plot just turns into a obsessive girl trying to get back with her ex
However, when you think about it, Griffith did actually have guts for his 'everything': the guts for striving towards his one and only dream and vision, but also the guts to go astray from his straight path just a little bit to save his 'obviously-he-is-his-secret-lover' friend, Guts. It is just that he starts to lose his guts: first, when Guts leaves his ass; then his views weaken after the torture; then, finally, he completely loses them alongside his humanity during the eclipse. Truly, a tragedy concluded in one man's causality.
Also, I don't think Griffith is a full-blown psychopath. He feels deep empathy for others' well-being and feelings; as we have seen many times. Following the second attempt on his life, in particular, he asks Guts to spare his comrades this vision of him as a scheming monster. Though his words must be taken with a grain of salt, as the characters in Berserk never truly understand their own thought processes, Griffith knows he would have the unconditional support of his men. But - for their sakes - he wants them to believe in their own just cause. In their leader. This kind of thing has also been historically used as a tool for control, sure - and he utilises this later in the most recent chapters of the manga - but it strikes me more a benefit of these kinds've decisions; and not simply the end goal. Griffith cares. But he also respects individual choice. He doesn't want to force people to follow him. He simply accommodates their decision to lock arms and pursue his dream. He bleeds for them. He suffers for them. And, in turn, they do the same for him. But there is more to Griffith than comradery. And here you hit the nail - he has something that drives him. Something that, for anyone else, would be considered a delusion of grandeur. He wants a kingdom. But for what? Just to have it? A toy to play with and abuse as he sees fit? We can't know for sure. But we CAN know that [[MANGA SPOILERS AHEAD]]... ... ... ... When he DOES get it Griffith is hardly a tyrant. He stops tyrants. He channels the rage of the Apostles. He leaves his citizens happy, his followers appeased. He returns to Charlotte, and takes her in as his wife. He doesn't need to do any of this (as far as we know), and yet he does. He still cares for Guts, and finds himself struggling to restrain his feelings. Even 'bad' actions, like the attempt on Rickert's life, fall into a vague area of "Was HE the one to give the order?" You're right when you say that Griffith is subtle and Nuanced. But you are wrong to imply that he sheds these subtleties and nuances upon his ascension. If anything, we know less now, than he did before. He can take his dream at ANY moment. So what is stopping him? Why save stragglers caught in forests, under the attack of monsters? Why shield the population from Apostles? Why spare Guts, a sacrifice who would no doubt increase Griffith's own potential upon his death? There's a bigger goal at stake than a kingdom. Manga revelations will take years, though, I bet. :P In conclusion - and all that said - Griff DOES have a lot of sociopathic/psychopathic elements, but the man cares. His style of empathy, however, is rooted in psychology and philosophy, rather than superficial emotion. Griff's a thinker. And he thinks he can guide his followers to be more than they are. Whether another huge sacrifice or crazy uprising happens in the future, though, remains to be seen. :P
+Mystery Yoghurt, I would like to point out that Griffith - been ages since I last reread Berserk so forgive me if I'm wrong - is yet to actually marry Charlotte. If I recall he just has her there at the moment. Which, if he is going to marry her then why is it being put off?
I think that you have very good points. But somehow after all the tortures he went through I believe most of the things you mention were vanished. He lost all of his humanity. I'm not sure wether he represents the status quo (and he sort of means well, as a ruler that is lead by logic and Gutz just represents an agent of chaos. Since that world is also ruled by entropy) or he has like a secret plan and Falconia is about to be sacrificed just like he did with the band of the hawk. (Sorry if I said something nonsensical since my mother tongue is Spanish)
When Griffith ascended into Femto he absolutely lost those subtleties and nuances. The Godhand are incarnations of the desire that caused them to ascend. However, when he was reincarnated back into flesh, whether it be from the inclusion of the demon baby in his egg or just a fact of being a physical being again, that's when he regained some of his nuance and humanity even.
Sociopaths can still feel empathy and connect with a few people. However they are often filled with delusions and are emotional and angry. I think he definitely has antisocial tendencies but aside from that is pretty normal
I disagree with what you said about griffith still having emotions etc. when he ascends to femto. Griffiths goal from the start imo wasnt only to be a ruler but to be seen as a hero or a savior for people. The reason that griffith doesnt do many evil actions after he ascends is because his goal fundamentally involves helping people in a way. He wants them to see him as a hero. My point is griffiths seemingly good hearted actions after his ascension truly stem from his selfish desires and dreams.
One thing that I also always thought is this. Griffith never didn't see guts as an equal of sorts. Even though guts never did realize it the fact that he cared for the band of the hawk and wanted to see the group thrive was his dream. Griffith knew this. Also his strength and valor was testimony to his ability being comparable to him. I also do think that the second fight between the two was pivotal to this. As soon as guts won griffith knew that he was his equal...and his true friend. Also this was griffith's ONLY friend. He was the only one he ever felt close to. Despite him saying what he had said he had hoped guts would stay with him forever. But it didn't happen and guts left. The loneliness that griffith must've felt was probably mind boggling. Even during and after the eclipse when he becomes femto he does not kill guts despite having so many chances to. Other apostles and god hands attempt to kill him but griffith doesn't seem to care. I think because deep down inside his twisted mind he still sees guts as his irreplaceable friend. The idea of his friend dying may bother him so much despite his evil nature that the best he decides to do is to leave him alone and let him live as long as he may.
An additional level to this is that, in a bit of dramatic irony, when Guts defeats Griffith on the hill he almost becomes Griffith's better. He has many of Griffith's traits in that moment, as Casca later berates him for, but then Guts does something very inverse of Griffith. He invites Casca along, not to own her or control her but because he wants to be with her. She's as much a part of his dream, he can share it. That one swordfight underscores that, in his own fashion, Guts has ascended past Griffith. Which is why dragging him down during the Eclipse is so important to Griffith. HE cannot have a better in his mind. Which is why more recently when Guts foretells that 'Griffith will continue to fly higher. That is the nature of the Hawk/Falcon', I think he's foreshadowing the next goal of Griffith. I think Griffith's going to try and either dominate the Godhand, or maybe even just kill Void. And with the way that the Godhand was scattered during the Convergence it could all be part of his plan.
Not to mention that Guts inviting Casca to come along with him is something that Griffith never seemed to do. To Guts, Casca is irreplaceable but Griffith saw only Guts as irreplaceable and didn't seem to care nearly as much about her. In a way, Guts became the Griffith that valued Casca, and this could (depending on how you think) also mean that he surpassed Griffith, in one area at least, that of compassion and humility.
@Ryan Jones Yeah. Sad that Griffith never realized that simply caring for the well being of others was a better path to having a kingdom and being a good ruler.
Your channel is an incredibly rare find. Brilliantly insightful commentary. Having now watched half of your videos and intending to watch the rest soon, I felt the strong urge to leave a quick comment. Figured I'd choose here since it was the video that made me stumble across your content. Please continue your analysis on various media. This type of content is becoming increasingly difficult to find on UA-cam and is in no large supply. Thank you so much. I had such a blast watching.
I'm so glad to see comments like yours; reactions like this are what I really hoped for when I set out to create a UA-cam channel. I'll continue doing these as long as people keep enjoying them and the channel keeps steadily growing - it's extremely gratifying. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Major spoilers in this comment (you are warned) I also think Femto's rape of Casca was part of a plan to have her return to the physical world and have a physical baby that he could be reborn into, skirting the "rules" preventing the godhand materializing into our plane. Guts was probably intended to die though, so skull knight foiled that plan. Also since Casca was already pregnant, the rape only caused the demon-baby miscarriage, but the kid was still good, helping Guts and Casca. When the baby was "saved" by the Egg of Creation, fate got its way and Femto was able to incorporate its body to grow a new Griffith body, but since it contained portions of the physical Guts+Casca baby there was a flaw introduced (mentioned in the reunion on the field of swords). I bet that comes into play later on. The Od/Astral portion of the demon baby was not seemingly incorporated into Griffith though, seems it was ejected from the body and can manifest to help its parents on Full moons (the disappearing kid). Though if Griffith continues to weaken the walls of reality by destroying the spirit forests, he might show up more. This new manga hiatus is killing me, just when we might get Casca back. I bet Griffith is gonna be attacking Elfheim soon. Maybe a grown up Rickert and the BakiRaka and General watshisname will show up to lend a hand (due to the time difference in Elfheim).
Interesting! So the rape of Casca was both calculated and a display of dominance/power. I know exactly how you feel pal. But Berserk fans must learn to live with the hiatuses. :(
Interesting point! I think you are right about Griffith rape of Casca. So if even this action was something, Griffith did to achieve his goal. That makes his goal even more interesting. Griffith commited the most horrible crimes, but its seems he also brings a utopia-like state to the world (well at least for those who made it to his city). And if Guts would destroy Griffith, would he not also destroy this new world? So will Guts eventually have to face a similar decision as Griffith during the eclpise? Destroy Griffith and destroy everything or sacrifice his own right for revange so that not all scrifices before were in vain? But perhaps Griffith end goal is much more sinister. At least it seems that good forces in the world, like Flora, the Flowerstorm King and the arguably good skull knight oppose Griffith.
Great point. I still feel a huge element of it was definitely done out of spit but he is constantly planning Griffith. He may not have even felt anything, which makes it pretty horrible he violates and destroys Casca like that just for his dream, totally matches his character too and because he looking ahead and so I can see it being entirely also calculated. Also think Elfheim will be attacked by Griffith and time will move for others outside Elfheim
kagetsuki23 Likely but also we know that a lot of it is preordained and part of Guts story is him struggling and seeming to be the fish in the pond rather then the reflection. Even Skull knight attack on Griffith was deliberately seen and Griffith saw it coming because he would use Skull Knight dimension cutting.
All the main characters (Guts, Griffith, Casca) get what they want in horribly twisted ways. Guts finally finds a purpose, Casca finally gets to be with Griffith, and Griffith finally becomes a ruler.
You could make the analogy that Guts and Griffith were like the Queen and King on a chessboard. The Queen, Guts, is mighty and thus deserves the sacrifice of pawns on her behalf, but is ultimately expendable if it means victory (Griffith becoming God-Hand) is assured.
You can really tell Aleczandxr was still finding his own footing while making these videos, nowadays he has developed a much softer, inmersive voice, and he has really stuck out as one of my favorite content creators on the platform, but most importantly, one of the best analysts I've seen on UA-cam
How do you put Hunter X Hunter in the same category as Berserk? I like HxH, but it's not simular to Berserk at all and doesn't have the depth of Berserk.
I certainly like HxH, but I feel like it's a tad overrated, and a lot more illogical than Berserk. Berserk is very, VERY dark, but the story and character development is incredible. HxH on the other hand is a little more "wacky" in my opinion, a little more pseudo philosophical. I feel like a lot of people are projecting depth into the weird tone it has. I honestly don't particularly like how twisted and weird some of the Japanese animes and mangas can be, but with Beserk, as gory, brutal and psychological as it is, the overarching themes, story and characters makes it worth it. Same with something like GoT. I like the show, but I feel like the gratuitous violence is a little too much. I don't understand why everything has to be so ultra violent. Btw, I'd highly recommend the new series American Gods. Another show that I feel like the violence is made up for by the merits of the show.
Haha I had the exact same reaction to that scene in American Gods. Had to skip past it lol. I don't have anything against gays either, but that was way too visceral for me. As I said, gratuitous violence and sex is very much in atm! Add in LGBT viewpoints and sheesh. Haven't been anything like that since though, but each episode is very distinct and different. That's what I like about it, it's very unique and incredibly well done. If you liked the theme and feel of the series before that, I would definitely recommend watching more. Anyway, I guess HxH is both. I heard the manga is being continued again right? That's pretty cool!
What's ironic is that both Guts and Griffith are tragic characters in two very different ways. Gut's entire life is tragic. He's a victim of circumstance and has been shaped by the tragic events of his life. And despite all of his tragedies, he never gives up. Griffith on the other hand choses to become a tragic figure. The tragedy of the eclipse and his own downfall as a human being was done by his own choosing.
This video opened my eyes about the golden age. But I can't stop to think that not enough people on youtube care about the later chapters of berserk. I would love to see you analyze the later arcs.
Berserk taught me a valuable lesson about friendship. In berserk from the beginning when guts and Griffith meet you can tell that he puts his dream above all, yes he might be very attached to Guts at times but when it came to his dream he valued it more than his friendship with guts. In the real world application I now examine the people I consider my friends very carefully, in the pass I would call people fake who talked behind back or egod infront of girls;but in reality they weren't fake they were true to their selves, I've always known that they've had an ego or they would talk behind people's back to me, I expected them to suppress their personality when it came to me because I was their friend which is wrong. Basically I learned to become more observant of others and to understand people's natures, If I encounter someone who has a personality trait that is toxic i will try not to get to attach to them; Or if I do interact with them I will try to be aware negative flaws
Thanks for sharing. Berserk has plenty of ideas and morals that can translate very well to real life. Choosing your friends carefully is incredibly important, as is being able to accept and cherish all kinds of (non-toxic) personalities.
+Aleczandxr Awesome video and character analysis. One thing that I often wonder about though is why does Guts continue to carry that Behelit? Considering what it is you would think that he would have thrown it away by now.
0816 M3RC Sorry for the late reply. I always assumed that he thought it was the key to gaining access to the God Hand, the only way in which he knew to get to them. (As DxV04 points out.) There aren't many good alternatives either. It would be careless to throw away a behemoth after Guts has witnessed the horrors they bring. Might as well prevent someone from using it and use it towards his end goal.
Wow, this was such a great character analysis on the both of them. I would have liked if you touched on the fact when Guts wanted leave, at the end of their duel he basically held Griffith's life in his hands. Further driving the fact he completely lost control of the situation.
Slightly before the Fantasia Arc, I couldn't help to see Griffith and Guts as the embodiment of the Ying and Yang symbol. Griffith is the Yin : following a bright path with a dark and evil soul. Guts is the Yang : A heart full of goodwill and caring towards his friends taking the darkest and most painful of path.
Guts & Griffith (along with Himura Kenshin) are my favourite anime characters. The fact that people hold such strong emotions to them, shows the author achieved exactly what he wanted people to feel.
That last picture of the band together was the last blow to my heart :,( Berserk is such a great but tragic story. How one man's dream destroyed everyone in his path.
The ending to this video had me tearing up. One of the best moments in the series as a whole was the role reversal in Guts and Griffith's duel. Griffith was calm and composed in their first fight, while Guts was angry and erratic. In their second, Guts was calm and composed, and Griffith was angry and erratic. Just brilliant. :')
9:17 This picture alone really made me feel for Gutts looking back at it now. First thoughts of Gutts was that he was a vile cruel man. At that moment I wondered why such a edgy guy seemed so bothered by a threat by a little girl when he wouldn't even lift a finger to help her and even put her in harms way. Then the Golden Age arc happened and I understood everything.
I just discovered your channel tonight, and i've been binging your videos. So awesome seeing such thought and passion put in to these breakdowns of what makes Berserk an amazing narrative
Brilliant analysis! Thank you so much for sharing. I think you hit the nail on the head in your analysis and exploration of Guts and Griffith, and the importance of their relationship as the driving force in the series. People tend to focus on Guts and Casca, understandably, but it's really Guts relationship with Griffith that's the most important in the story, the relationship that really encapsulates its most pertinent themes and messages. There's deep tragedy infused in both of their characters, and where they started, and how they've ended up.
Hey, does anyone else realize that unlike Griffith, Guts’ dream changes over the years. Like first his dream is to become stronger, then it is to take revenge on Griffith, and then his dream becomes saving/protecting/curing Casca. Meanwhile, Griffith’s dream just stays the same. To have a kingdom...and that’s it (like what is even the point of him wanting to become king besides ambition. It’s almost like Griffith doesn’t really think about why he wants him dream). I feel there is an important theme there, but I’m not sure if anyone else has discussed it or noticed it.
I stumbled upon this anime some time ago and was immediately drawn to the characters and story, especially Guts and Griffith's relationship. I finished it utterly floored and needing to see how it all ends but found nothing outside manga. I been meaning to rewatch it and piece things together more and definitely will now - unnecessary after watching this lol. Fantastic job man, was hanging on every word. Thanks.
Seriously probally the best and most detailed video in the world. You have good language and you can describe the feelings between griffith and guts SOOO well. I'm not joking most amazing video ever I'd love it if you made more videos like these and maybe other Videos on Berserk I would love it if you do so man!
ZBoot Again, thanks a lot pal. It means a lot. :) I will definitely continue making videos. I have some videos similar to this one about Hunter X Hunter, Fate/Zero and Re:Zero if you're interested in that, they're all on my channel. I don't have any plans for a Berserk video in the near future but there's definitely a chance of me making more!
this is the best analysis i;ve ever scene. You are a great human and need to keep putting your analysis out there. Berserk falls flat with many people because a lot of the community hasn't read the entire series. this video isnt what we deserve but what we need. thank you for making this. I truly appreciate it as someone who has read/seen the entire series and cant put their opinion out there. In my opinion this is the definitive berserk analysis.
watching again, in a defamation wanting position, i cant discredit nor disprove of any opinion that you accredit. i honestly believe this is one of the most non-bias breakdowns of berserk as a whole. thanks again for the content. it fantastic
well, its was clear that griffith cared about his mercenary band, he prayed for and honoured the death of one of his soldiers, he sold his body so that he can safely expand his army rather than get tribute through more conflict, he choosed to stick by his men even when the nobles were asking to leave casca and guts behind, the biggest thing to note is that his sacrifice was his band which means that he at one point in his existence, he deeply cared ans loved his army and I think that also provides griffith complexity seeing that his character was a conflict between chasing ones purpose to caring about those who get pushed or blown away by the chase. he had to choose a decision on what was more important to him, his dream, or the people who he met and cared for.
Yo, this is my third time watching this vid. I'm so happy how much your channel has grown. Much respect to you bro and I wish I could talk to you in person about this amazing series. 360 is coming our way!
@@Aleczandxr a little late but the thing I notice that is a difference between guts and Griffith is how they value people guts valued the Band of the hawks because all his life guts only knew battle things like family campion ship love all of those things were never shown to him until he met casca and rest of the band hawk when he finally did he meet them he got to experience all of that even in the manga he values his new crew he enjoys their company like with the hawks But what about Griffith well Griffith is a man who is driven by a dream and that is all he never values the old and new bands of the hawk are nothing more than a means to an end for him Charlotte as well Griffith now Femto values no one not even guts he views every one around him as tool to be used femto values his dream because to Griffith/femto a dream is all that matters he is a slave to his dream
Rewatching your old Berserk videos while I’m finally reading the manga in its entirety for the first time. (Seen the original anime many years ago and personally thought the 2016 one wasn’t nearly as bad as people make it out to be). Just wanted to say how much your channel means to me and I’m sure many others. The choice of media, themes and even music choice…..just about everything you cover is stuff that I’ve already been passionate about. When you released a Xenoblade Chronicles video(my favorite video game of all time…calling it just a video game almost feels insulting to be honest) after using the amazing soundtrack in your videos for years felt long overdue and I was practically brought to tears listening to it because that game means so much to me as well. Thanks for devoting your time to this type of content all these years. You have such an incredible way of capturing the essence of the media you’re covering like few others can. It’s been a joy to listen to through the ups and downs of life, some particularly rough times and some good ones as well.
Everybody always calls Griffith spoiled, but he was an orphan who came from nothing. Also, I feel like he sells himself to avoid needless violence. I feel like he was a true protagonist before he lost his humanity during his downfall.
The conversation takes place on a stairway landing with roots and a large crack on it. It’s right before Guts leaves the band of the hawk. I always thought it was subtle and clever but worked as beautiful background. It’s also fall and the change of seasons. We see snow when they duel. I stare at it every time I see those pages.
I think plenty have commented about the content of this video and I love it and think it's fantastic, but I was also super impressed by your editing in this video. All of the transitions between music, usage of anime dialogue, and everything was else was just top notch.
This Manga is so good. So depressing gory real beautiful and heartbreaking when Griffith betrays casca and guts and the hawk. I wish they would really try to adapt this into an anime correctly sometime soon.
I still found it funny when Griffith told everyone to wait outside when he went to fight with Guts against Zodd, then he showed up with an entire group of guys with arrows.
golden age is not just a masterpiece of manga, but of fiction, and I say this as a westerner who hates Japanese manga and anime. this is a perfectly good example of it. Berserk is unique and a work of art in literary world history
Your analysis of Griffith and Guts and their unique relationship is brilliant! You earned a new sub! I enjoyed every minute of this video - it certainly brings a new light to Griffith's development and decision (even though his actions in the eclipse are still absolutely despicable and cannot be excused). The contrast between him and Guts always faszinated me and drew me to the series in the end. Can't wait for the next chapter of the manga!
I think the most interesting concept that so far I haven't seen or talked about is how the big three never really talked about the situations arose and how they felt concerning them. Their implicit lack of communication led to the hawks and coincidentally the big three's fates. Ironically enough there choice to not speak about their issues led to their demise in accordance to the fate that befell them. I hope that all makes sense.
Griffith is one of my top three anime characters. And I will admit I didn't like guts at first. But as he developed more I saw him as an amazing character.
I my view twords the golden age arc. Is that Griffith had actually forgotten his dream and actually seemed content with just fighting along side guts. And the only reason I think he said those things about a true friend is that he didn't want to think anything could hold him back. As well for him sleeping with gov Gennen, he had two options fight ten battles and lose more men or spend one night with a creepy perv. And he did way the risk because the day before he saw a child in his military die and it did strike a cord with him, even if he doesn't want to admit it. So I actually saw him as a man who did have conviction and did have sympathy for those who fougth with him. i think guts was different because Griffith actually viewed him as an equal and may have even had romantic views of guts, It goes to show that Griffith doesn't care who he sleeps with but he does have sights for someone and keeping him under his subordination kept guts close. This was a reason why casca hated guts, that and she mentions that guts is the only one who can get griffith to forget about his dreams. I can go all day but I saw many layers to Griffiths character and saw him as someone to sympathize with, but you were right his down fall was his own. As far as arogance goes I didn;t really see it as such. Griffith wasn't of noble birth but he strived and worked every day at it. So all that confidence he had he had to create from nothing.
Been following berserk since i was a kid. I am still waiting for the next release of the manga that usually gets released every few years or so. Anyways, griffith spoke from his balls and not his mind, and i hope he gets what he deserves.
If they would just have communicated this wouldn't have happened... Vital lesson here: speak what's on your mind or everyone dies or gets (mind) raped.
12:40 - First time I watched the '97 anime, I started with episode 2, completely by accident. So, I had no idea G&G would ever be anything other than soulmates. Maybe I'm biased cause I watched it that way, but it seems like the much better experience.
Rest In Peace, Kentaro Miura. An absolute legend whose storytelling transcends and will continue to transcend forever. It’s impossible to put into words how much he touched my life with Berserk and that is also true with countless others around the world. Thank you❤️

@Aleczandxr what are your intentions going forward my friend?
@Aleczandxr why is this in ur worst playlist. And why do u even have a worst playlist?
To me, I think Guts character profile kinda resembles the good that exists in the bad, and Griffith resembles an evil inside the good. Because how they look is almost a polar opposite of how they feel. kind of like yin and yang
I definitely see that!
Wow brilliant comment man!
so brilliant, not obvious at all
Gaven Schmidt classic example of looks can be deceiving
Gaven Schmidt Hmmm? Guts has killed just as many as Griffith.
"And evil begins, my boy, when you see people as things."

William Edward mah boi
William Edward He died this Year RIP Terry Pratchett too soon. Love em.
SIR Terry Pratchett.
People are things. Made of matter just like everything else. We aren't special or exceptions to the laws that bind reality. In the end, your decisions and actions can neither be good or evil. It's just insignificant compared to this universe
Artaxerxes well i guess you’re evil now
And Guts´physical state reflects his life. He lost his left arm (Griffith and Casca), his eye (part of his sanity) and part of his hair turned white (indicating that he´s tired and stressed).
+MisoJapanese I was talking about the "meaning" of his current physical state, as if the physical state is a methaphor of what he has been through.
He stated that a plan was set for the ending, but is likely to change depending when he gets to it... so hiatuses
we all felt the friendship and the betrayal 👍
Big Money Jorgie wouldnt have mattered...he was destined to be at the eclipse

Guts is such a great protagonist.
How rare is it to have such a badass and hardcore protagonist who's essentially death on legs, but is also human, and in some ways even vulnerable.
Incredibly rare. That's why Guts stands out so much in the realm of anime/manga protagonists.
He reminds me of roronoa zoro from one piece, only difference is that zoro has a goal and guts has not
@@LegendSergio Technically Guts did have a goal after leaving the Hawk. He realized his love for swordplay and strove to battle stronger to further hone his craft not unlike Zoro. Then Griffith had to act like an overemotional woman and ruined everything.
@@Drums_of_Liberation lmaoo an overemotional woman hahaha
@@shanks6190 how else would you describe it lol. Especially Griffth's later treatment of Casca once he realized Guts "replaced" him with her.
pretty sure guts is the only thing griffith ever loved. thats. why when guts left he went insane like a heart broken girl friend lmao
I guess if he couldn't get his kingdom then he would've chosen a peaceful family life
Exactly, but unfortunately Griffith is a cosmic plaything, and the God Hand just wouldn't leave him alone.
Demon Snake I don't think Griffith would have ever just given up and settled down.
You said it perfectly
( I am in high school so I have a lot of free time, and I tried acting like Johan for around a year, and boy did everyone start praising me, I was bored in the first place so I was fine with it, then I realised that I had no "true friends" so I immediately stopped acting like them, it is a pretty interesting thing to try and it is really not boring I even enjoyed it quite a lot except for the part when you no longer love anyone back ( except you family, very very close friends...etc ) because they don't love you, they love the person which you tried to copy for a few months because you were bored... )
@@sansamman4619 monster, one of the best manga/anime.
It’s ironic that Guts’ hatred stems from absolute love.
I think what Miura did better than anyone in this business was create a villain that we all hate for the right reasons. Because usually if you hate a villain its because they suck, but if they are great villains you end up liking them.
He's undoubtedly one of the greatest villains I've ever seen. Ridiculously complex.
But fuck Griffith though.
Baltimorestorm11 Yeah basically

At least rickert survived
What I Love about Berserk is that when you think that you *finally* figured everything out about a character, yet upon reading for the X th time you change your mind and start doubting *everything* that you thought about before.
For sure. There is so much depth to nearly every relevant character, each reread brings something new into the light. Amazing series.
Guts didn't stop pursuing revenge because he " accepted that he was the cause of the band of the hawk's death", he just didn't want to lose something that is irreplaceable again

He would call him his best friend like naruto even though sasuke never considers him as his friend and then the entire plot just turns into a obsessive girl trying to get back with her ex
You could say, Griffith, just didn't have the guts.
Badam - tish. Nice pun. LOL.

Even 'bad' actions, like the attempt on Rickert's life, fall into a vague area of "Was HE the one to give the order?"
You're right when you say that Griffith is subtle and Nuanced. :P
In conclusion - and all that said - Griff DOES have a lot of sociopathic/psychopathic elements, but the man cares.

I love the deception in the thumbnail: Griffith facing a serene blue sky, Guts facing what looks like hell
He was planning to kill Guts during the Eclispe. But the Skull Night MVP ruined his plan.
Exactly. Griffith cannot take being or feeling truly inferior.
Well said Ryan Jones. Great comments.

Major spoilers in this comment (you are warned)
I also think Femto's rape of Casca was part of a plan to have her return to the physical world and have a physical baby that he could be reborn into, skirting the "rules" preventing the godhand materializing into our plane.
Also think Elfheim will be attacked by Griffith and time will move for others outside Elfheim
unlikely, griffith would have let the demons murder casca and guts at the end if skull knight did not help them.
kagetsuki23
Likely but also we know that a lot of it is preordained and part of Guts story is him struggling and seeming to be the fish in the pond rather then the reflection.
Isn't it wonderful thinking that these deep, complex and masterful works like Berserk and Hunter x Hunter will probably never get a conclusion?
;____;
Yeah, 4-5 chapters a year seems really criminal, as a Mangaka, I would set a goal for at least one a month. ce' est la vie
RepublicOf 1 the quality is off the charts and literally just elevates with every chapter.. I'm not complaining..
I honestly don't think I ever emotionally recovered completely from the anime.
One does not simply recover from the eclipse.
This video opened my eyes about the golden age. But I can't stop to think that not enough people on youtube care about the later chapters of berserk. I would love to see you analyze the later arcs.
I wouldn't rule out doing the later arcs but I need to give the manga a re-read before doing so.

Thank you! And although that basically goes hand in hand with losing a sword fight, you're quite correct. Good point.
You've spoken so well about berserk ! BERSERK FOR LIFE GREAT VIDEO
Thanks very much!
Rest in Peace, Miura! He truly created a masterpiece that will forever stand through the test of time!
The music from the 90's anime is some of the trippiest weirdly haunting androgynous but fitting sound tracks I've ever heard
Fucking well done. This should have more views.
Thanks mate. It has been getting quite a bit of attention lately for some reason, so I'm not complaining!
Guts & Griffith (along with Himura Kenshin) are my favourite anime characters. The fact that people hold such strong emotions to them, shows the author achieved exactly what he wanted people to feel.
They're a couple of my favourites as well. Amazingly constructed and emotionally resonant.
That last picture of the band together was the last blow to my heart :,(
Berserk is such a great but tragic story.

This picture alone really made me feel for Gutts looking back at it now.
First thoughts of Gutts was that he was a vile cruel man. At that moment I wondered why such a edgy guy seemed so bothered by a threat by a little girl when he wouldn't even lift a finger to help her and even put her in harms way.
Then the Golden Age arc happened and I understood everything.
The effect that the amazing soundtrack has on the tone of the scenes and the story is simply incredible.
I just discovered your channel tonight, and i've been binging your videos. So awesome seeing such thought and passion put in to these breakdowns of what makes Berserk an amazing narrative
Glad you've been enjoying them!
I will say this. You nailed it in this video. You bring in what made me a fan of Berserk in the first place.
Awesome. Thanks so much for watching!
Aleczandxr Welcome :3
Brilliant analysis! Thank you so much for sharing. I think you hit the nail on the head in your analysis and exploration of Guts and Griffith, and the importance of their relationship as the driving force in the series. People tend to focus on Guts and Casca, understandably, but it's really Guts relationship with Griffith that's the most important in the story, the relationship that really encapsulates its most pertinent themes and messages. There's deep tragedy infused in both of their characters, and where they started, and how they've ended up.
Yes, but Griffith is not Gatt's main enemy. His main enemy is called HIATUS! *sobs*
Hell, not even the GOD HAND can escape hiatus. Lol
I’ve watched several times, and I come away with a new perspective each time. Sign of a great video. Well done👍
One of the best if not the best character analysis of Berserk. Incredibly well thought out and put together! Thank you for time making this.
Thanks so much for watching.
Thanks.
Thanks for those kind words mate. Glad you enjoyed my analysis. It really is a special show that deserves attention.
why im crying
The hiatus man.
Right in the best part T_T -_-
Berserk draws out the human in everybody.
while feeding our beastial urges ;)
Ive never seen such an amazing video wow man good video U just got a sub
I appreciate it!
I will definitely continue making videos. I have some videos similar to this one about Hunter X Hunter, Fate/Zero and Re:Zero if you're interested in that, they're all on my channel. I don't have any plans for a Berserk video in the near future but there's definitely a chance of me making more!
Alright thanks for even bothering to make this long comment for me but Thx man Ill be sure to watch it and I wish you a good day and thx again!
ZBoot No worries buddy! Thanks again for subscribing and keep an eye out for more stuff in the future.
This is the video that got me into Berserk
this is the best analysis i;ve ever scene.
Thank you so much. I'm glad that I was able to communicate my ideas in a way that you enjoyed. Cheers for watching. :)
watching again, in a defamation wanting position, i cant discredit nor disprove of any opinion that you accredit. i honestly believe this is one of the most non-bias breakdowns of berserk as a whole. thanks again for the content. it fantastic
Kash Wow. I'm not sure that I deserve that much praise, but I really truly appreciate it. :)
amazing to see where berserk is now. guts has grown so much
Such a fucking amazing video, I cannot say that enough. You were spot on my friend!
I'm so happy you enjoyed. Comments like this make my day.
well, its was clear that griffith cared about his mercenary band, he prayed for and honoured the death of one of his soldiers, he sold his body so that he can safely expand his army rather than get tribute through more conflict, he choosed to stick by his men even when the nobles were asking to leave casca and guts behind, the biggest thing to note is that his sacrifice was his band which means that he at one point in his existence, he deeply cared ans loved his army and I think that also provides griffith complexity seeing that his character was a conflict between chasing ones purpose to caring about those who get pushed or blown away by the chase. he had to choose a decision on what was more important to him, his dream, or the people who he met and cared for.
39 dislikes are from Donovan fans?
rapturedpassage There are Donovan fans?
High Lord Dongovan loved Guts so no we didnt dislike it
Probably Corkusus fans
No whale knights fan
Was rewatching this vid and I have to say @Aleczandxr your narration and delivery have only improved over the years.
Haha well thank you, yeah some of my older ones are quite rough.
I have eaten trough 250 chapters of this manga in just some weeks. Time to read more
Yo Aleczandxr, thanks for using your talents for something as cool as this.
Thanks for checking it out, dude. (Assuming you're a dude)
Yo, this is my third time watching this vid. I'm so happy how much your channel has grown. Much respect to you bro and I wish I could talk to you in person about this amazing series. 360 is coming our way!
I appreciate that!
@@Aleczandxr a little late but the thing I notice that is a difference between guts and Griffith is how they value people guts valued the Band of the hawks because all his life guts only knew battle things like family campion ship love all of those things were never shown to him until he met casca and rest of the band hawk when he finally did he meet them he got to experience all of that even in the manga he values his new crew he enjoys their company like with the hawks
But what about Griffith well Griffith is a man who is driven by a dream and that is all he never values the old and new bands of the hawk are nothing more than a means to an end for him Charlotte as well Griffith now Femto values no one not even guts he views every one around him as tool to be used femto values his dream because to Griffith/femto a dream is all that matters he is a slave to his dream
That second background song gives me the chills
What's its title...? Do you know it? I do like it 😶
I think it's called Guts theme
heartbroken this masterpiece has been left without an ending :( legendary. Hope he’s telling these great stories to the other stars in the sky
This was such a great job
Thank you!
I think plenty have commented about the content of this video and I love it and think it's fantastic, but I was also super impressed by your editing in this video. All of the transitions between music, usage of anime dialogue, and everything was else was just top notch.
That last picture of all of them :'/
This Manga is so good.
This is the most insightful Berserk video I've ever seen. Awesome job!
Thank you!
This was really really insightful and well analysed! Hope your channel grows further!
Thanks very much, I appreciate it!
golden age is not just a masterpiece of manga, but of fiction, and I say this as a westerner who hates Japanese manga and anime. this is a perfectly good example of it. Berserk is unique and a work of art in literary world history
But anime isn't a monolith, saying I hate anime is like saying I hate movies. It isn't one thing that's the same
Please...more berserk content
I've got some Ideas for Berserk stuff, don't worry!
I just want to say this was so well done! Thank you for creating this!
That's very nice of you to say, thank you for watching!
Nothing more annoying than when you find out that you have been pronouncing a characters name wrong,
For whom? and how did you do it before?
Caska. He accidentally was pronouncing it 'trash.'

Thanks very much, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I can't wait either!
Guts has probably the greatest character arc ever written
I think the most interesting concept that so far I haven't seen or talked about is how the big three never really talked about the situations arose and how they felt concerning them. Their implicit lack of communication led to the hawks and coincidentally the big three's fates. Ironically enough there choice to not speak about their issues led to their demise in accordance to the fate that befell them. I hope that all makes sense.
your videos are so good . keep up the great work
Thanks.
truly, the best breakdown ive seen for this manga. Thank you.
Thank you for watching and commenting. :)
Griffith is one of my top three anime characters. And I will admit I didn't like guts at first. But as he developed more I saw him as an amazing character.
I honestly have trouble thinking of characters that are more well-constructed than Griffith. Guts is great too.
22:50 Nice transition there. Guts was already mentally clocked out by the victory parade.
Griffith contradicts himself the whole damn anime
Yeah he’s mostly a vehicle for plot events and guts motivations disguised as a character
You're mentioning of Nietzschean philosophy in these videos were what drove me to read his books. Thank you for that.
Been following berserk since i was a kid. I am still waiting for the next release of the manga that usually gets released every few years or so. Anyways, griffith spoke from his balls and not his mind, and i hope he gets what he deserves.
2 of the greatest characters
If they would just have communicated this wouldn't have happened...
Vital lesson here: speak what's on your mind or everyone dies or gets (mind) raped.
“But the one emotion we don’t see enough is happiness”
What a line to define Guts as a character.
12:40 - First time I watched the '97 anime, I started with episode 2, completely by accident.
So, I had no idea G&G would ever be anything other than soulmates. Maybe I'm biased cause I watched it that way, but it seems like the much better experience.
"I'm throwing away my humanity, Guts!!"
