i have LOVED this plant for years (city of Houston planted them in the median and along some storefronts) and i have been looking for them everywhere because i just wanted a seed so i could start one myself. so i wrote the city of houston and asked if i could catch the landscapers disposing of them could i ask for one.. they said YES! so three days ago i became the owner of a beautiful foxtail fern! i am soooo very happy!! thank you for this video! i have been wondering if i should put my baby in a pot or in my garden..
Very informative. Thank you so much for this video. We almost planted two in direct afternoon sun, and here in Texas, that would have been deadly. Again thank you for the save on our beautiful new plants.
Thanks for the great information. I bought two of them to place in containers that contained aspedistras finally started looking sick. They loved the low light on the porch and got through many winters here on the Central Coast of California. Maybe I an bring them back by transplanting them elsewhere. Hope the ferns provide a new look to the porch. Love your videos and hope that Arizona continues to be rewarding to you in the years to come.
Foxtail "fern" is actually not a fern at all. It is a kind of asparagus (A. densiflorus, Asparagaceae), which makes it a flowering plant and not closely related to ferns whatsoever.
Darn it, I really need to stop watching your videos. I thought that plant was so interesting. Was shopping at Lowes and spotted a tray of them, immediately grabbed 2 and have them at home now. The problem is now I have another 2 plants to load up and bring across country to Tucson. I just cant help myself, I have never seen or heard of them or the ZZ plant- which is doing great by the way. Thanks for sharing. I just cant wait till Im heading west. Take care and try to keep cool this week.
Hi Nell. Request, please a video of how to propagate Foxtail Fern? I am a newbie when in terms of gardening then a friend of mine has a foxtail fern and ask some but it died :-(
I'm in Poteet Tx and nothing and I mean nothing grows in the direct sun here. I've had 2 foxtails that get evening sun. I've had them 2 years now. They don't grow bigger or anything, they just are like stunted. All my others types of ferns do great. What is it about these? They are in sandy soil but pretty good compost. I really want mine thick like yours, they next to Pulmosa ferns are my favorite.
Hi! Could you tell me the name of the plant you have planted next to the foxtail plant. Someone gave me a few that were dug up from a yard. I planted it in a pot but never found out the name. I've been searching all over for the name. Maybe you could tell me the name???
Hello, thank you for the video. I watched another video on this particular fern and the person had stated that it is toxic. Can you confirm or deny that? Thank you!
What a great video! Do you have any advice for pruning to enhance bushiness? I bought two fox tails and one is perfectly short and bushy and the other is sparser and Leggier. I want to prune it back to encourage bushy regrowth. Any tips?
Mine in Florida looks nothing like yours. Mine is anemic. Not the deep green. Gets full sun all day long. Guess that's the problem. Going to move them. Thanks.
I recently got a foxtail fern and there is a long shoot growing out the side of it, like 3 inches a day! Is this normal or is it a weed? It's so strange looking!
Oh thank you +Joyce Kumar It does best outdoors but I know someone who lives in a cold climate & brings hers indoors in the winter. Such a fun fern! Nell
Hi - Yes, the smaller the pot size, the smaller the fern will stay. The root system on this plant grows very thick & dense so the root ball will dry out faster as time goes on. You'll need to water it more often then. Nell
I’m in Florida, I planted mine in full sun and it’s doing great so far. We have been in the high 80’s. Hoping it does well with daily watering.
I saw this fern planted at an estate along with hydrangeas under a birch. The combination was beautiful.

Exactly. Just like the Asparagus Fern. Nell
Does too much water kills the plant ? How much water will you recommend for a small foxtail ?

Best way to propagate this fern is by division +Marilou Almanoche It's easy to do, just watch our for the thorns! Nell

How to grow fern foxtail from seeds?
Yes. I got my seed at etsy. Soak overnight. Then plant in soil, cover til it germinates.
Hi there...if i want to keep them small as they come from the store should i plant them in the containers that they come in?thx

Awesome...thx
You're welcome!
hi lady, so awesome this v is but i dont think its not really a fern....because ferns dont flower or grow berries......they only make spores....
Hi - Yes, they're called ferns & are members of the lily family. Same with something like a ponytail palm - it's just called a palm. Nell
Mine is just not sending out new ones
yes very helpful thanks
Lady, You didn't really tell me much about propagation, either by division or thru seeds.Sorry but you were not very informative.
