Love the video, the explanation of how towns like Hinamizawa can be irl is a great touch! Just a small correction: Mion isn't a tsundere - she's a tomboy who takes on more of a group leader role and gets along great with everyone in town as the future head of the most influential family in town. Satoko is more of a tsundere, who shows her affection to Keiichi by pranking him, but actually likes him because he reminds her of her "nii-nii" Satoshi.
Interesting - I'd say the reverse. As far as I know, a tsundere is someone who oscillates between being bossy and being clumsily affectionate. Satoko would be more of a straight up tomboy. Although...honestly it works both ways :)
@@frightranker In its core, a tsundere is someone who acts cold/harsh but slowly warms up to you and shows a more affectionate or shy side of themselves. "Tsun tsun" = acting cold/indifferent and "dere dere" = lovey-dovey. E.g. Kyo from Fruits Basket or Asuka from Evangelion. Mion has never been cold or indifferent towards anyone (except Ōishi but... can you blame her?). Platonic and oblivious to her own feelings, yes, absolutely. I wouldn't call her "bossy", rather than "group leader with a kind of maternal role". Satoko, on the other hand, acts harsh towards Keiichi at the start of almost every arc, arguing with him constantly and pranking him daily, only to warm up to him once she sees how reliable and protective of her he is. Not fully tsundere, admittedly, since she does do her pranks to get a reaction from him, but she does act like she does not like him at first, nonetheless. The most common tsundere line is something among the lines of: "Here's [some cookies I made or something]. Don't get the wrong idea! I'm not giving them to you because I like you or anything. They're just leftovers." That is peak tsundere. 😂
I have more to actually read when they cry, but from what I've seen, I feel like Satoko and Shion- they're a bit more alike than either may think, esp when it comes to their shared appreciation of Satoshi 🤔
I started reading Higurashi while in high school because my school library had it and it is still til this day one of my favorite series of all time >.< Makes me so sad that more people dont give it a shot!
The instantaneous second the picture of the chickens showed up, I knew EXACTLY what part you were talking about. And boy oh boy, I remember coming across that part on my first read through. I had to disengage and take a break from reading because of how absolutely horrific it was. That wasn’t squick, that even was pure nightmare fuel. But it’s always good to see Higurashi praised! I remember reading the first arc in the Yen Plus magazine years and years ago and got so obsessed with it as a teen. And I always loved how they switched to a different artist for each arc. Keeps you on your toes because each one has their own slightly different flair for how they’re going to haunt your every waking moment. lol
higurashi has to be one of the greatest visual novels/ story i've ever had the pleasure to experience. i expect when i finish the visual novel (i'm on chapter 5 right now) i will be confident in puting it in my 10 ten games
that's a good point about the characterization of the town, it's really important in a lot of horror stories but something i think the general audience might take for granted. When seeing and atmosphere are done right, they can be just as scary if not more so then the antagonist!
I agree that the manga is an incredibly amazing adaptation of the visual novel. Although like most and maybe even all adaptations, it is unable to completely convey all of the nuance that the original add, the horror and mystery in the manga are cranked up in an incredibly compelling way that the anime and even the visual novel to an extent couldn't use themselves.
Thank you so much for this. ❤️ One of my absolute favorite content creators giving some much needed love to this underrated masterpiece of a series!! Cannot wait for the milestone deep dive!!!
@@frightranker I haven't read the full thing yet, but so far the worst part of Umineko is the description of being caught in ... I think it was called a logical paradox. With the character who survived it begging those around her to let her know that this is really real, she's not just hallucinating being out and surrounded by frienimies.
That was a great video. It is also my favourite story ever told. Just two things: Keiichi was a newcomer in Hinamizawa, he had never been there prior to the start of the story. So he wasn't born there. You might have been confused with Rena, who had come to Hinamizawa a year before, but was actually born there. Also, that scariest scene you were talking about did it have something to do with the fifth part and a certain blue-haired girl and a knife? That is probably one of the scariest scenes I have ever seen in a manga.

As soon as you're a newcomer, at some point the parasite will also affect you. However it will obviously only affect you when you're experiencing high levels of stress. If not, life goes on as it should. That is a pretty scary scene yeah, the most horrifying one to me though is Rika's suicide in the eye-opening chapter. Holy shit. In the manga that is.

When re reading, I noticed many things pointing to future discoveries in the story. Looking forward to the deep dive you are planning.
The manga is infinitely more creepy and terrifying than the anime and visual novels. It's also far more complex aswell. The manga actually makes Rena truly look like a demon.
not more complex then the visual novel, but I do agree that it succeeds in being a horror much more then the visual novel, it kind of stopped being a horror after tsumihoroboshi

Just found your channel. I paused your video about the middle and then binged read the first four arcs of Higurashi before coming back and finish the video 😀 great recommendation
I'll be starting a proper (and better!) deep dive series on this later in the year. In the meantime I'd highly recommend my big Made in Abyss video, Gantz, Lollipop or a Bullet and Uzumaki as those I'm damn proud of my work on.
I only watched anime and it was a long time ago, when I consumed way too much horror media. I don't remember everything and I had to watch a sequel to understand the plot, but I remember it really made me sad with that one plotline. And I think I'm still a bit confused with Shion/Mion shenanigans. I still listen to Dear You sometimes when I'm sad.
I randomly came across the anime back in college but i had no clue there was a manga and a game! Youve actually covered a few of the horror stuff i like & some new ones im interested in checking out :D
Makes sense you're confused with the Shion/Mion timeline of actions and events, because the 2006 Anime f*cked that one up completely in order to condense events for its runtime. Things originally done by Mion pretending to be Shion are now actually done by Shion, even in complete contradiction to her characterization in the Sound Novels and the (much more faithful) Manga.
Three minutes in, subbed because I really want to see an in depth look at the manga. Also, have you also read the Umineko manga or visual novel? It’s much less of a horror story than Higurashi(although episode 1,2 and 6 have some INCREDIBLE horror moments) but narratively I think it trumps Higurashi.
The visual novel is beautiful. Did you happen to check out the visual novel first? I kind of recommend that for everyone because the anime doesn't do much justice as it skipped a lot of stuff. The anime isn't as bad as Umineko's anime adaptation (haven't checked that adaption out. But I heard that it's very bad). But yeah, it's not as bad as the Umineko anime but it's hard to adapt a story that's originally from a visual novel that was made at its own pace into a few episodes for each arc.
Also Ciconia isnt new. It's been on hold for a while now, and unfortunately with the way things are going it might not even actually get anything more than one episode.
If you think the manga panels of higurashi are brutal, I recommend/not recommend Higanbana no Saku Yoru ni. It manages to be somehow darker than higurashi in just the first 3 chapters. I don't know if you can show some of the panels though, it gets very fucked up.
@frightranker thanks man sorry for hounding about it on other vids but you do so well and i wanted to leave some kind of comment for the algorithm and was genuinely curious about that particular project
Glad you’re covering this masterpiece, if I ever went to Japan I would kidnap a child from a rural village dye her hair blue and make her say “nipahhhh” and I would call her rika
Higurashi is okay but not that good, kinda pumping it up, it is mid at best perfect blue is 1000 times better and there are so many more with better writing that makes sense and you can't call the plot in the first couple chapters
I'll add here my usual c omment about Higurashi then watch the vdeo: each version is good in a different way. The anime is great, good tension, some lovely angles, and a good entry point to the franchise. The manga, well, you're got the idea, but it's slower going through as you absorb the art and it can take more time to follow a few rabbit trails. The games... we get good sound design, very cutesy character art, but it's a visual novel with all the difficulties that implies. That SAID, it's on steam which means us fans don't have to buy in japanese then download an english language patch. Yes, this means I bought the whole thing TWICE. The games are worth it just for the extra details in the TIPS section, small scenes you can watch at the end of each chapter that add world building, mewspaper articles, more information about the characters, all stuff that couldn't fit in the narritive directly but make things so much richer. Like a satchet of herbs thrown in a stew. You'll spend six, seven hours with these kids before anything bad happens to them, so the games really give you time to get attatched. Once you're past the first arc, that time in the beginning of the second is both a relief and a shoe, waiting to drop.
