As a girl in high school I was bullied and became depressed, which caused me to get into a fight with my only friend (another girl that was bullied) and I ended up all alone for about a year. I remember just hanging out on my own during the recess and going to class only after the teacher did because otherwise I would be picked on. And even though the bullying I've been subjected to was just verbal, I still to this day haven't completely recovered from it. I grew up to be a socially awkward mess with depression and anxiety, I've let people that I thought were my friends or lovers walk all over me and abuse me just because I thought that was the treatment I deserved. In the end I was so sick of being mistreated by everyone that I became a complete shut in and isolated myself from the society. I'm 29 years old and only recently I've actually met people that genuinely love and respect me and it made me realize that I deserve respect just like any other human being. The story about the bullied girl in the Japanese school almost brought me to tears. Nobody should be "the kidney". It's so fucked up on many different levels, first of all that teacher is an asshole (and I hope she goes to hell where she gets bullied forever (just kidding)). Emotions aside, nobody should talk this way about a child, this is objectification and child abuse!! Children are not here to serve anyone's needs, they're here to grow into a wonderful person that could make themselves and people around them happy. Nobody should be brought into this godforsaken planet just to be a "kidney". I bet that teacher also thinks about herself as an object, sad reality of a society that objectifies its own members, it's sad and scary. And it doesn't happen in Japan only, it happens all around the world, but with different twists and flavors to it. I'm really glad that there are people that are willing to speak up about the issue of bullying and horrors of being just a cog in the machine.
When I was a kid I was sure adults are useless and without compassion, because I got never the help I needed. I was so afraid to become such an adult. I just couldn't understand them and I can't understand the adults from my childhood now. I can't understand why they ignored the problem. I am 30 now and I would never behave in such an ignorant manner. It's their job to help and defend this children. Not just their job, it's their duty. I can't see children cry or suffer, because I think every time about my own sad childhood.
I went another way, but I was born in 1971. I was a poor kid born to a beautiful idiot and a drug and alcohol addicted criminal. My life was VERY HARD... and my abuse was not only verbal. There was a lot more. My bullies eventually met the product of my family by pushing me, quite literally, into a corner. They would NOT allow me to run away, so I attacked. This experience gave me a reputation for being crazy and the bullies eventually gave up. They didn't bully anyone around me either. I used those years to grow and I eventually joined the US Army and found a focus for my anger. I ended with a paycheck for life, as did my wife who was herself a bullying and abuse victim. We met in the Army in 2007. We've been together and best friends ever since. I am happy in a way I never hoped to be. Keep going, you can find a way too.
It was SO jarring hearing FrightRanker mention Mrs Van De Merwe as there was a teacher at my school in South Africa by that name who retired while I was still young but who lived beside my grandparents and she was most definitely NOT the kind of teacher you would be drooling over
@@frightrankerSimliar to police in America. So many are just kids that were bullied when they were young and feel the need to have power over people. Childhood trauma, of any kind, often creates a cycle of trauma that gets passed down person to person. Im sure you know that though. It's just sad.
The way people go OT and get on their own soapboxes is as fascinating as it is alarming, but there is no pattern of bullied kids becoming police officers except in WeekndWarriorrr’s mind perhaps. It’s equally silly to think if there were truth to it that it would only be in America. Bullies become nurses too. There isn’t a singular realm. Plenty of people also do break cycles of trauma. I don’t blame my family - you see it in school, at work, on the internet…there are tons of opportunities every day for folks not to “pass on trauma”, to extend genuine kindness (not strictly virtue signaling), yet bullying and trauma dumping remain common habits. I think we may wish to consult personality disorders, or Cluster B specifically (where forms of narcissists lay), for the ones that seem to span generations.
For me, it's BLAME!. It resonates with a specific way of thinking that haunted me as a child and was so pervasive I had nightmare variations of it repeatedly forever. It's science fiction first(that it has horror seems more a product of what it is rather than the hard aim of it) but damn... all the talking, plot progression and scary monsters in the world will never haunt me like those dreams or like BLAME!'s setting will.
You would have been an outcast and definitely kicked out maybe even go to juvie cause their culture is all about confirmity and not causing trouble for others. If you beat someone up it's a public disturbance, even just yelling could get you in trouble. They blame both people involved regardless if you wanted a scene or not. At least that's what I learned in some articles on severe bullying cases. It's the same way it's a taboo to go see a therapist for mental health disorders.

Yeeeeessss been waiting for this one for a while, but totally worth the wait! I watched the anime before reading the manga and you pretty much nailed the pros and cons of both compared to one another (heh). But the story resonated with me, as someone who was ostracised in primary school, myself. So I could definitely see the social commentary in that since it was a bit too close to home at times. It's saddening that this is considered 'normal' in Japan. It genuinely feels like you died a long time ago, yet are still wandering around a plane of existence you're not supposed to be in anymore, and no one would notice if you would one day just disappear. I admired Mei's character for not falling too deep into that psychological pit of despair. It's... one heck of a climb out of there. 😅

For me the best horror Manga is "Blood on the Tracks" AKA "Trail of Blood". Because there's nothing supernatural in it, its about a 12 year old boy and his mother who is obviously not mentally there, and does something horrible. The way the drawings make you feel trapped with this boy, the facial expressions which are so realistic- someone faking a smile, in a psychotic frenzy, in love, and every other emotion, make you feel and believe everything you see. The horror this boy lives through, and continues to live with, is heartbreaking and horrifying. Its really the most stressful thing I have read.

It's a bit like filming on greenscreen. It needs work to feel right. The right lighting, the right scale. And you recognize bad greenscreen.

The photograph-background technique to use on background environment was used alot in my country's comic, most related to background environment of the real world. Even as a kid, i slowly realised that the somewhat detail black and white environment of the KLCC twin tower is not drawn but photo edited. Not saying its a bad thing, rather is interesting to utilizing this technique if your kinda shit at drawing detailed environment of the real world.
I'll be honest, Ghost Hunt is one of my favorite horror manga of all time for the blend of mysticism and science, so to hear that the same author is involved in Another helps explain a lot about how the story unfolds... except for the number of ultimately forgettable characters, which is not something Ghost Hunt suffers from. Another fails a rather basic thing that horror needs to do: it fails at making me give a shit about the characters before they die, so the death has weight to it. Okay, to be fair, some subgenres of horror do NOT need us to give a shit about the soon-to-be-dead characters because we're here for the spectacle. But in a mystery driven horror, that lack is felt keenly. These seem less like people and more like numbers on a timer, counting down.
