  • A concrete block or masonry tornado safe room is reinforced by fully grouting the cells of the block and reinforcing them with vertical rebar. Concrete masonry is made in a variety of textures and finishes providing many options for complementing the look of new or existing construction.

    In Guam, all our houses are built like this. Guam is in a typhoon/hurricane prone area in the Pacific. In this part of the world, we call it a typhoon. Our last storm: Super Typhoon Mawar reached sustained winds of 140mph and gusts up of 160mph. And houses built like this stand up to these kinds of winds.

      Yes, the solution to make tornado-resistant house is by brick instead of wood like what they have done here in the mainland.

      Me and American had this conversation recently and he was convinced that it was safer to build with wood. I said sir I’m from the Caribbean and only concrete houses survive hurricane. He insisted I didn’t know what I was saying even after explaining that I live in a hurricane zone and have experienced it for years.

    Or a better Idea - build your whole house out of these blocks for about half the price of a normal build, and have it last longer, and be safer. Mind blown.

    • @miusukamadoto6805
      @miusukamadoto6805 2 роки тому +32

      It is not going to be half the price, on average in USA a concrete house is about 7% more expensive than the wood frame, but 7% higher cost is absolutely nothing given all the benefits you get. Tornado proof, bullet proof, non insect edible, fire proof... with little bit of insulation you get tremendous energy efficiency as well. If I can afford to pay 500k for a 3000sqft wood frame house, I'd gladly choose 2500sft or even 2200sqft concrete house for the same price.

      @@miusukamadoto6805 dont quote me on the prices. I figured its cheaper as you dont need siding or plywood. Blocks are cheaper than wood. Little concrete is used to fill the holes of the blocks... but youay be right. I havent actually ran the numbers.

      Building a 60 foot long wall, two-and-a-half stories (not to mention a 60 x 30 roof) that will withstand a direct hit from an F5 tornado is economically unfeasible. Tham much surface area would require far more integrity than a 10 x 8 foot wall.

      "THE BEST SOLUTION IS BUILD A HOUSE 100% WITH CONCRETE." (2023 comment): A concrete Dome House: see 'Monolithic Domes' for ideas. These should just shunt the tornado's wind around you; debris, maybe not, but it might skid along the surface. Also great for hurricane areas - wind only, storm surge is another matter altogether. I think ANY house that is rebuilt in Florida should be a dome house. These are NOT the geodesic triangular-modular ones from the 70s. Google them.

    I've said it before and I'll say it again ALL new construction could easily include a safe room and if done right the appearance would have zero noticeability from the remainder of the home. This should be done for all states but the Fed does not mandate common sense. And the Fed loves to pay out trillion over years. So simple to solve. Also should be mandated concrete homes anywhere hurricanes happen. This would also be very doable and the folks that specialize in this can make them look any way u want (they have forms that can produce clapboard look). This would totally handle the insane claims. Anyway, whatever.

      An underground unit in my area is subject to flash flooding. Even a concrete vault could blow out of the ground in a flood at any time. It could become a death trap in a tornado. FEMA can provide plans with engineering approved standards for above-ground, concrete block shelters. There are hundreds of approved, self-standing metal structures anchored to concrete pads. Such structures exist in F5 strength, and have withstood the test of time across the US. You have no idea what you are talking about.
