Thanks for the insight! I caught my PB smallmouth out here in Wilson Reservoir in KS on Saturday on a Pointer 100 (Live Pearl Shad) at the crack of dawn!! It was 19.5” and weighed 3 lbs 12 oz!! Appreciate the advice!!!!
One of the best explanations of how to fish a jerk bait. I will use these techniques in my upcoming fishing. Thanks so much for sharing. On a side note my first Vision 110 jerk baits, I broke the bill off on one on my second cast to a railroad bridge on Pool 8 on the Mississippi and the second one is still in a tree on a backwater area on the same pool.
Fking super informative...and this is why I love this store! Thanks Ben
Thank you for watching my friend!
Love watching jerk bait videos! But, always have questions. One, if I'm fishing a jerk bait in 3-5' water, do I need to draw the bait down a little after it hits the water? Two, I've read where people will move the bait a few inches in between jerks, maybe after the pause. Not every time but, they add that to their cadence. Have you done this? I've had great success with the 110 silent but, casting distance suffers without the balance transfer weight system in it. I can throw my 110 Juniors further. I'll be checking out more of your videos as I love jerk bait fishing all year and, I am a diehard Megabass 110/110 silent and 110 Junior fisherman!
Great outline of the technique. Naito san has a great Floating Rattling Rogue overview on his Hiroism channel and Japanese Angler Waki has some excellent English language jerbait content. You guys should work out a deal with Japanese Angler Waki, he makes videos that make me want to buy things.
st croix triumph 6'6"medium is the best budget jerkbait rod on the market in my opinion.
I have two 6' Medium Triumphs that I use for jerk bait fishing. I like the shorter rod because I fish from the water, (usually with hip boots on) and, the shorter length keeps me from slapping the water as often. Love St Croix rods!
My argument for primarily fishing a jerk-bait on spinning gear is due to the style/angle of my retrieve. I feel I’m more versatile with a spinning rod. When I retrieve on a casting rod I’m really only comfortable and effective in one direction. On a spinning rod I can twitch and jerk any which way and still make effective movements without negatively effecting the action. With that being said I always have 2 (sometimes 3) jerkbait setups on the deck at all times.

Yep - great points! It's all such a personal preference and if it's working better one way of the other thats the way to keep doing it!
I finesse the shit out of them and tie a loop knot and super light lines 6# is as heavy as I go. I'm with you.
@@scottleggejr I used loop knots until I lost my MegaBass 110 due to the loop breaking. I just think that inner edge of the loop slamming against the ring every time you jerk the bait becomes too much pressure for it to hold for long. JMO
@@robertbrost7777 Agree. The loop can get caught on sticks and shit too. Retie often.
6'10 expride with 10lb fluorocarbon i lose very few fish like 1 out of 100....i bend those outbarbs taking them out of the fish than fighting em...great video!
That can also be a challenge for hooks - removing them from the fish. Great point!
Just landed a 13lb king salmon on that setup yesterday on the delta throwing a megabass 110 plus 1. That lure is amazing hands down the king of jerkbaits!
This is the Chanel I’ve been looking for….😮😮
IMO there's no right or wrong way to use your tackles. do what works for you. what works for someone may or may not work for you. in other words, my style may not suit what you recommend. one size does not fit all. regardless, good info.
What about a soft jerkbait? Thanks for the video 👍👍 and content 🔥🔥🔥.
I'm a walleye fishing nut. I'm looking for the right one fishing from land. Can you help me thank you.
Ben…this was the most informative jerk bait lesson for me from UA-cam. I fish the Ito oneten , Ito shiner and other Megabass jerkbaits. I caught tons of pike in the past with vision oneten but since I switched my rod to a P 5 oneten special, my catches dropped significantly. Thanks to you, I clearly now know that I work the bait too hard. Your explanation was so enlightening….you guys from The Hook Up Tackle rock!!
@@wolverinex4243 I never broke a lip on a OneTen, instead I got tangled too often. Honestly, I would never use this bait with a H or a MH rod. I use the P5 Oneten stick which seems to me a M power, with a fast tip and a more moderate bend. Braid to Fluoro leader with a titan leader tip (northern pike would cut Fluoro). This is no optimal setup, as the baits suspending capabilities are affected by the titan leader, but I can’t waive it as I would lose too many baits/fish. Nevertheless…thanks for your comment!!
@@wolverinex4243 I use the chinese knock offs as well, but when suspending capabilities are key I always use the original. Your bad opinion on this lure is a bit surprising to me because my perception is, that it’s one of the best jerkbaits in this size/weight and catches tons of fish. There are other good jerkbaits from Jackall, Duo, Deps etc. but if I have to choose only one my decision would be the Megabass Vision Oneten. What would be your choice?
Bro, you had me at Covid computer chip 🤣
EVERY day is a JERKBAIT day!!!
Hell yeah!!
How’s the cyclone for jerkbaits? Heard it’s a lot like the oneten stick but is a lot more versatile.
It's dope.
As far as cadence goes I like to listen to jazz or prog rock and twitch with the time of the music speed is relitave to water temp but I never twitch the bait in a simple pattern.
Nice! Sounds like the fun way to do it! 👍🍻

THANKS BRO.. LUV YOUR VIDEOS...I recently purchased some custom painted Sanger jerkbaits from a local California guy because i've wanted to really learn how to be a BETTER JERK (not just a regular JERK),,, for unknown reasons ( maybe confidence) I've always shy'd away from using a jerk bait ???? luv your (easy to understand & detailed) type of instructions and i'll be sticking with using your informative tutealedge to build the needed confidence to leave one tied on and refine the ART-OF-THE-JERK.. :-)
Love my jerk baits! I have the Levante Jerkbait rod paired w a Lew’s custom lite (can’t afford those high end lite daiwa’s from Japan yet) and man does it make a difference! I caught a 5 1/2 lb. in December in Cincinnati OH on a Jerkbait!!! One thing I have had trouble w has been hook breakage from Megabass. I have now begun to change out all their hooks to owners! Lost to many big fish from their brittle hooks and many of my buddies have had the same issue. Have you guys noticed this? I’d think paying $20+ for a Jerkbait would afford for great hooks?!?! Lost my biggest bass on the I-Loud bc the hook snapped on a brand new lure. The Jerkbait hooks seem worse. I love their baits but hate their hooks!
I should have watched all the way through!😂😂. I have used 12 lb and I set the hook to hard for those hooks. I do switch to owners so at least I had one thing right!😂😂😂. Thanks TO!!
@@JonJonsOutdoors the Megabass hooks don't need a hook set, just apply pressure and you got them. But you need light line.
@@thehookuptackle_usa - akin to topwater fishing most poppers. I cringe when I see hard hooksets with most topwaters, instead of just sweeping and leaning into the fish.
FWIW, I fish mostly braid + leader for topwaters, although it's the same with mono/copoly, a frog/jig type hookset just isn't isn't necessary, and most likely pulls the bait away from the fish instead of helping to bury the hooks..
That's like $2,000 in jerk baits 😂.
Great info! Never thought of swapping out to an owner but I do love those finesse stock hooks
$475.00 for a rod is super expensive I could never afford that. I'm sure its an amazing rod for sure but that's way out of my price range
If you are good with a bait caster you can grip it and rip it even in the wind. I fish daily and it only took me a few days to get a feel for it. If I was you I would stop talking about how hard it is to cast a bait caster because you might be talking people out of them. I wouldn't touch one forever because of all the talk about how hard they are to cast, throw in the price of a good one it's a scary step.
In Russia lots of guys break off bills on Vision 110, and then say it's bad quality, definitely not heavy power rod, aggressive twich and straight braided line.
I gotta put it an order sometime soon, I’ve gotten so much good information from this channel I almost feel bad. Japanese fishing stuff is pricey though. These videos are so thorough.
I find that the balance is off when I swap out the hooks. But swapping only the middle one……… PERFECTION! 8-10 lb Stripers / Bass will straighten any of those stock hooks.
I recently upgraded my hooks on the 110 but when I did the sink test they have a slow sink. Will that just kill the action? I was thinking I could use mono to combat that, or at least hope a slow sink may be a good thing haha
So I just got a plus one, using 30lb braid with 40lb mono leader for bass/musky. Guessing this is a bit misguided ?
Love the Katsuagi hooks. I use 10lb for and abrasion resistance but back my drag way off. If those fish nip at the bait, they are hooked!
Good informative video never really knew how jerkbaits would react based on the lip thickness. Now the hard part is trying to adjust the jerk bait based on water temp and understanding what that bait is doing underwater at that current temperature. But guess you just gotta experiment. I like my Rapala rip stop bait caught a few on them. I have a few vision 110 but am afraid to throw them lol. You should do a video on spy baits.
Don't be afraid! You already bought it, you might as well throw it!
@@thehookuptackle_usa I always tell my wife "You never really own a lure. You only get to use it 'til you lose it!"
Here in Brasil we need to use oversized tackle because peacocks are too strong, in the most changes of treble hooks we use decoy hooks.
Jerkbait is Just a special Minnows with wobble action, I use it as Minnows
If you fish braid to fluorocarbon on shallow rivers you can break bills ,even on 78 pointers . Learned the hard way.
talk jerk bait for trout in rivers...
Not sure exactly what the reason is but the last few springs I've done best on the smaller baits like the trick darter and another brand but seems to be the deal around me.
6'10" Expride B....Fantastic jerkbait rod for 110 and 110+1
Pointer H3 is my go to, wish they had more color options.
I wish that too! That's a great one!
That was definitely helpful for a guy just getting into jerkbait fishing.
Excellent coverage. I struggle with this bait. Perhaps more success in the future.
You can do it! when it clicks you won't be able to put it down!

Totally off topic but I had to brag on you guys- I just placed an order on June 27th and it just arrived a few minutes ago. By the way- these drippy frogs rock man- awesome. That's just 4 days to process and ship it and it arrive- and I live n Alabama, it's not next door. On the other hand I placed an order at TW- forgive me- 15 days ago- still isn't here. In my defense it was something you guys don't carry- the new P71 poppers. Anyway- I just wanted to brag on you guys and let everyone see how quickly and efficiently you get your job done- The Hookup Rocks ppl! I'll be ordering more soon- and I'll make the next one much bigger. Yeah- that's another point- this was a small order guys- I didn't spend much at all- and still you guys gave it the same attention as if I had spent big money- well done.
Thank you for your business man! And for the kind words! 🤟
I no this is off topic but I have a quick question, a vid you guys did a while back on frog fishing griff talked about using shorter rods for his frogging. I’m pretty much strictly a bank guy and just bought the levante perfect pitch and it’s just to long for me. Can you guys recvomend a rod for frogging 7 ft. Or less in the $250 or less range?Oh yea I fish very sparse cover so I’m mainly throwing it in open water. Thanks I’m advance fellas
Hey man! Shoot myself or Griff a DM on IG and we can talk through rods with you. There’s not a lot of shorter rods designed for frog fishing, it’s a relatively niche thing, but there are rods that could work even though they’re not “frog rods”.
Excellent info. Thanks. Your camera man is amazing.😄
How much clarity would you say you need on average to throw a jerkbait successfully? And do you need about the same clarity to throw soft jerkbaits like a fluke? If the water is on the clearer side, do you start of with a slower cadence- and vice versa- fish it more aggressively if it's on the stained side? I seem to have all the stuff you covered right- I'm throwing them on 7 pound FC sniper, I'm using a moderate-fast action rod- medium 6'10". I'm using a 6:1 ratio- and I've started developing a feel for twitching through the slack and hitting the bait lightly at the end of the stroke- not moving it between jerks. Still- very rarely have success with them. The only thing I can think of that might be causing an issue is water clarity- we've had record rain fall and everything has been muddy and flooded all season- but even on a normal year we don't get much vis. I'd say it averages between 1-2 feet- only getting clear when we have drought conditions toward the end of summer. That said- I just found a new lake to start fishing that does stay clear- averages probably 3-4 feet but lots of days it's up to 6 feet. It's a lowland reservoir- fairly small relative to something like Pickwick but since no gasoline engines are allowed it's perfect for kayak anglers.
I think they're best in clear to slight stained water.
Sweet Brother!!! Awesome information I only have experience with the kanatas they draw me big fish in heat of summer along with big rats Love You Guys!!! Cheers!! :))
The Kanata is so under utilized! Glad it’s working for you!
What about the Megabass Triza Grils for a jerkbait rod?
I agree with the Megabass hooks they are very good hooks an hear so many people complaining about them bending. I have like 10 vision onetens couple Ito shiners and none of them have I bent a hook. I even caught my pb on Ito Shiner at 6.8 lbs an that didn't bend the hooks neither. Like u have to be setting the hook very hard to bend those an have ur drag way to tight as long as ur drag is set right an u don't yank like ur setting a jig hook. You shouldn't have a issue an also out barb hooks behave the same way barbless hooks do and penetrate like a needle so it def takes less force for them to actually dig into fishes lip.
Knowledge is king when it comes to hooks! That 6.8 had to be a blast!!
Ben is just giving out free game here lol 🔥.
Thanks for watching man!
I keep the original hooks on my Megabass jerkbaits. Three reasons why. 1 balance, 2 I fish them in cold water, bass dont pull as hard. 3 If I get snagged I can bend out hook and get my lure back.
#1 mistake = spending $30 on a jerkbait!
All the lakes I fish right now are full of weed...jerkbait is not an option, but you guys gave a great instructional of what to do and not do when fishing jerkbaits.
High floating jerkbaits are amazing with weed growth, unless of course they turn into mats, and then yeah - you're screwed! 😂
Wow. Thank you for that very interesting talk.
Felt like I was watching a long commercial. 😪
I have a ton of MB jerkbaits. I have a Ito Shiner thats black back, black belly with gold sides. Would that be best in low light conditions?
Hey Ben.... Any specials going on Sunday morning besides Orion Beer? Hah hahah... Have a awesome 4th

LOVE jerkbaits. I've had tons of success with Duo 100-130. Pointer 100, Staysee and MB 110. Pretty much all you need.
Duo makes great ones also!
Hey, thanks for tips.
About using a 6:1 ratio reels, I want to ask is it a problem to just slow down your retrieve with high ratio reels and there won't be an issue with getting drug forward a jerkbait? Greetings from Ukraine.
If you're good at adjusting yourself to your reel speed, then yes, you can just slow yourself down and use a faster reel. I'm not good at slowing down so I use a slower reel.
Anyone else think ole Vandam is prolly the jerkbait king??? Man he gets some bites on them thangs!!!!
He definitely is.
BERK STUNNA is such a great jb close to the MB 110
😂😂😂
Very good video! But can someone explain what the hell is the correlation between the line and the hooks? Didn't understand that part at all. Isn't the pound difference on the line just the breaking point of the line? From Sweden btw, almost everyone here use braid since 10 years ago.
A super helpful video. That vision 110 caught me a huge saugeye and I wasn’t even working it “correctly”. Can’t wait to go out with this new knowledge.
Awesome man! Thank you for watching!
Excellent informative video. I was thinking about how I had noticed KVD fishing a jerkbait and was amazed when you mentioned it. Jim Bitter is a great jerkbait fisherman whom I have fished with. He still likes monofilament for JB the last time I talked with him .

Any tips fishing in current and what about duos
Duo makes a nice jerkbait! Great bang for the buck! The biggest thing to keep in mind with current is your retrieve angle. Casting upstream or cross current is the best bet most of the time.

Thank you for watching!
AZ has a 2 hook regulation how do you fish the 110 with 3? how do you modify it so the suspending action is not effected?
A single lure, no matter how many hooks it has on it, counts as 1 hook in AZ. So you could have 2 jerkbaits ties on at the same time that each have 3 hooks, and that would count as 2 hooks. 👍
@@thehookuptackle_usa oh interesting does that apply to A-rigs too?
Such an awesome video. Love the cerebral approach. You guys NEED to start a podcast!
We might have such a thing in the works 👍🍻. Thank you for watching!
Personal opinion, I also think I can get/stay in rhythm with mg cadence better with a spinning reel. Even controlling the slack line and being careful not to pick up too much line just feels easier on a spinning reel. (This could easily change though if I slow down my baitcasting reels as mentioned). Very informative video, THANKS!
So many different styles and approaches. I could totally see you being in synch easier with the spinning!
One reason a baitcaster may win out is, you can use straight fluorocarbon with baitcasters. Fluorocarbon and spinning reels are a recipe for disaster. Coiling galore!
I think another mistake guys make (myself included) is fishing a jerkbait that isn't hitting the right depth. Sometimes i get stuck fishing baits that all dive in the same depth range.
Sometimes the fish wants a bait that dives 9ft in 10ft of water, but sometimes they want a bait that dives 3ft in 10ft of water.
I know i need to experiment more with hitting different water columns but in the same water depth, because sometimes i know there's fish in an area and they wont eat the jerkbait but its probably because the bait is mostly in their face, not over their head.
Fantastic insight and great point! Totally 100% correct 👍🍻

Another thing I've had on slow retrieves is using older line, the memory coils actually pull the bait towards you on the pause. One of the reasons I use a long leader now instead of straight flouro. Thanks for the tips!
Very good point!
How about what kind of knot? Does it matter?
You know, we've been talking about that. I think so, most goes don't think so. I think single tag line knots have the least resistance and best performance.
