    I’ve been throwing swimbaits for big bass for the better part of two decades now and got into BFS recently and I feel the fun of fishing is back in my life again. It was excellent drawing the parallelism between the two. Sometimes going to the opposite ends of the spectrum can get you fish that otherwise wouldn’t have bitten a conventional sized lure. Excellent video.

    Got into BFS 2017 but at that time there were not that many BFS rods so I started building my own rods for different types of baits to where I actually I have a collection of custom rods now. Took UL spinning rods stripped them down to just the blank. Started building old vintage glass rods to life aswell. I now mostly fish glass rods because the ease of casting. My favorite rod is a 5' UL Langley from 1960s I found at a Thrift store and turned it into a casting rod and it out fishes all my carbon rods.

    Some great advice here was the tip about adjusting your casting style. I was doing exactly what you said. I was out there chucking it as far as I could with big over head casts like I would with regular gear. You said something like "you need to get out of the way of the reel and let it do its thing". Just returned from the river and I tried some of those casting tips. Once I focused on a flick of the wrist as opposed to big arm motions my casting improved significantly. I was absolutely jacking them on a free rig. The Hazedong shad and the 3" Dolive Stick where money!

      Bro…. when you need to throw overhand… only use a two or 3 inch lead of line from the tip… it stops the abrupt speed change… works great for me!

    My favorite bfs setup is a abu garcia veritas te 7’ medium with a tatula sv tw 70 with 10lb sunline mono. One of the best rod lines ive used at least for lighter power and the reel is just f’n dope! I throw all my tiny baits like rebel tiny pop r to 3in senkos/or any 2-3in softbaits on this. One tip i can say regarding fishing the bottom is to set your drag low and reel into and pull back the rod to set, don’t jackem, because the rod is so light you’ll miss them every time. With the drag low, i let the rod do most of the work to set the hook. Any who, i appreciate the content you all put out, thank you. 🎣

    Good informative video. Cant say I disagreed with anything you said. Been a dedicated BFSer for nearly 3 years now (UK based) and rarely fish above 3g total weight. The only thing I would add is about the line. You touched on it saying you arent gonna get loads of line on a standard BFS spool but I would go further than that and say only spool up with what you need. Its all about keeping that spool as light as possible. 30m seems to be about right for me. That way if I do blow the spool up (it still happens 😂) then I've only lost 30m of line. I tend to carry a spare spool or some spare line and it only takes 5 min to re-spool. Also the benefit of braid over mono/fluoro is you wont warp your spool. Been a few posts on various forums over here when people have warped their spool by winding on fluoro under tension.

    Great video, I'd love to see an in depth breakdown of the BFS rods you guys carry. I.E. what a rod is perfect for, what it does well, what it can do ok, what it could do but maybe isn't recommended and what you would never use it for.

    Like watching your videos. Lots of good info on this one for us beginner bfs'ers. I have a curado bfs on a dobyns 7 ft finesse rod and love it. Whipping those small little baits around with a baitcaster instead of spinning gear is a dream! So far have thrown mostly small Repalla jerk/crank baits but can wait to try some of the baits you mentioned when their back in stock. Next setup will be a little stiffer rod to throw some micro soft plastics. Your right trying to set the hook with softer rod doesnt work. Lol Thanks for the videos!

    The number 1 take away I learned on my first BFS outing is to be super careful with these tiny hooks. They are crazy sharp and the hook tip will sink into a finger including the barb in a microsecond with almost zero pressure.

      I agree, be safe, a trip to the clinic for hook extraction is not fun. A Dremel tool with small grinding bit (or, a pliers for treble hooks with a microbarb) is your friend. And, if you want to fish in National Parks or Manitoba (barbless province-wide), you are all set.

    Couldn't agree more on the part about fighting the fish properly, I fish for bass and panfish in FL ponds that have fish in high single digits. Routinely catch 5-8 lber's on 4 lb fluoro easily, however I definitely have to let the fish make runs and have the clicker humming at times as well as keeping my rod tip low as possible to land. Also these are open water ponds, perhaps grass, no brush or logs etc, point being be aware of the cover and structure in the given body of water. Well said video.

      I like the right hand bait caster because although I reel with my left hand on the spin reel, I throw it with my right hand, the baitcasters are set up so you can just hold the bit with your left hand and quickly whip it without having to move your hands. I don’t feel any difference between the two.

    I love the BFS style of fishing! I have the Kestrel Elite and Dobyns Ultra Finesse rod on 5lbs Super Sniper FC. I caught a 10 lbs largie at my local pond, and it was the fight of my life 😂! I thought it was a trout that bit my li'l texas rigged craw as it began to pull. Then it became an unstoppable force taking line! Once she got far enough to make the line tension tight, she broke water, and I saw her jump, and she was humongous! It was a nice battle to wear her down and bring her to justice, but it was the most exciting bass fight I'd ever had! I did switch to 7lbs Sunline afterward, though, just in case I ever have to fight her in the coming spawns... if nobody ends up catching and killing her first 😢 that is.

    To their credit, the Shimano rods are labeled “BFS-A” or BFS American. “Finesse” in the US bass market typically means “fished on a spinning rod”. That’s the target market for the US market Shimano BFS rods. The Curado and Zodias BFS-A rods are great for Ned rigs, light shaky heads, tiny swimbaits and drop shots.

    How I normally calibrate my Conquest BFS is with a sinker for the lightest weight I'd cast; usually around 2g. I'll adjust the tension knob to let it drop with the least resistance at zero brakes. Then every other adjustment I'll do with the magnetic brakes. Heavier baits I crank down the brakes to bomb it out. Lighter baits closer to 2g I'll turn it up again. So far I find this is the best way to dial in the reel with baits from 2g-10g. I don't normally cast baits higher than 10g on BFS.

    Great video, very informative !! I luv how you break things down !! I fish small lakes 50-500 acres , finesse Bass fishing is not finesse trout, perch or crappie fishing, (I know, you know that !) While I have a ton of standard baitcasting rigs. I have diverted towards finesse fishing , due to fishing pressure in my area. I have 5 BFS combo's , but no ultralights, all my rods are lights... 2 are light/moderate (treble hooks) 1.5gr-10gr lures & 4#-10# line, 1 light/moderate/fast , 2gr-12gr lures, 5#-12# line (spinnerbaits/chatterbaits) and 2 light/fast 1.5gr-10gr lures, & 3#-10# line for Neds, jigs & worms, & single hook baits. As I'm only targeting smallmouth & largemouth Bass , I like a bit stouter rod, I'm typically tossing 3gr -15 gr (I know 10gr-15gr is really not typical finesse stuff) but I still manage to catch a ton of smaller species with the smaller baits. thanks for the vid & keep em coming !!

      If you’re just starting, I’d figure out what lure weights you want to throw and go from there. Amazon has a lot of budget options to try out, I’d check out the Mavllos Delicacy ($35 - UL to L power) if you’re throwing 4-10g lures, and the Mavllos Plume ($65 - SUL to UL power, very skinny tip section) if you’re throwing 1-6g lures. As far as reels, the Doviello/Soloking HICC-50 is an amazing BFS reel for the $60 price tag. It can be further improved to cast under 1g lures with a bearing cleaning or replacement. Spend the rest of your money on lures/jigs. It took me a handful of combos before trying these and I wish I’d have started here. Best of luck, tight lines!

Once you get used to adjusting the settings you can bomb overhead or sidearm cast just like a bigger baitcast reel. Over tighten you spool tension and play with breaks for weight. I have had so much fun this summer from trout fish streams to catching tons of bass on lakes near me. Takes alot of time on the water and practice. Fish On!

    You guys are awesome! I agree to everything you said and had to learn each aspect the hard way. Casting style is so important, as well as colored line to help with sight. This video would have helped me a lot 8 years ago when l started BFS. I‘m still in search of a rod to throw sub 5 grams Hardbaits (Duo Ryuki, Great Hunting etc..). I have the P5 Cliff Hanger which is too stiff for my liking, I have the Destroyer Carbon Head Elese (F0) which is too limp for my liking. Now I‘m eyeballing the P5 Siglett but l fear due to it’s solid tip it wouldn‘t fit as well. What would be your suggestion (shouldn‘t be too long as I will use it in small streams for trout as well). There needs to be a new category labeled as BFS has sort of been diluted by the American market. We have BFS actual and we have "BFS". I personally love "BFS" and am not usually in situations where I can fish actual BFS. Saying I fish BFS is not really exact enough. I know there's a difference, but the people I fish with don't really understand that there is one. Megabass P5 Bait Finesse rod is not really BFS, but I get numbers pretty much every time over my friends I fish with. And I'm not thinking that I can't catch something huge on my Bait Finesse rod, because I've caught a 10lb catfish on the Criffhanger Thrilling which is smaller/lighter spec than the Bait Finesse.

    At least I didn’t need to buy lures for BFS, already had large collection from my many years of ultralight spinning - I guess I am doing the “retro bfs”, since nearly all my lures are over 25 years old. And, I already have light power baitcasting rods too, since they were very common way back then, before we had so many people copying pro bass fishers with overly-stiff rods - thats why in recent years it was so difficult to find a casting rod with some bend. So, keep this in mind, many of us have been having fun catching fish on light gear for decades, and even with spinning gear, much of what you talked about still applies.

    Ben/Jeff, Another great BFS video. I've watched every one. Thank you. One surprise for me was your mention of braid to flouro leader for 95% of your BFS fishing. Even more surprising was the 8 and 10 lb leader. While you mentioned 3 and 5lb FC Sniper this is the first I've heard you talking about braid being your primary choice. Has your position evolved? I remember from a previous video how you said a small jerkbait like the great hunting will perform much better on 3 and 5lb line. Are you able to get the same results on small reaction baits with the braid/leader combo? Thanks again!

    • @thehookuptackle_usa
      @thehookuptackle_usa  Рік тому +1

      So, a lot of this is going to depend on the bait, and the conditions. If I'm fishing more open areas that pulling fish away from cover is not important - straight 3-4lb fluoro is still the prefered way. However, if you're going to be fishing around brush, big fish, etc - the braid to leader gives you flexibility. No right, no wrong that's concrete. We're adjusting to the conditions and needs.

    • @timbantham
      @timbantham Рік тому

      That makes sense. I'm primarily fishing for Smallmouth on a large river that has very fast current I've gone to 6lb FC Sniper to give me a better chance of landing those fish once they get downstream during the fight. I just fish my finesse baits on a light st croix legend xtreme spinning rod with a Stella 1000 I can cast a bait caster perfectly but find this to be way more reliable, effective, farther casting, I can work it better and I don’t get any backlashes. Bfs bait casters seem like a complete waste to me just use a finesse spinning setup. Also I can skip my micro baits on the surface … I just don’t understand why you would want it to be a bait caster so many downsides and a ton of advantages to bait finesse fishing with a light spinning rod

    8:00 dude, what are you talking about? That’s the entire game of bfs, you’re either throwing tiny 1g trout magnets, or you’re throwing drop shots and 1/8oz finesse jigs. A 5ft UL glass trout/stream rod and a 7 ft L extra fast graphite rod are essentially completely different fishing styles within bfs. You should be asking people if they’re going for BFS or Power BFS and explaining the difference between these styles. It’s equally as complex as modern swimbait fishing, like you said earlier.

    Bait Finesse Fishing is BFF, not BFS,
    Is the S for STYLE or for SYSTEM?
    BFS sounds more like what people deposit in their ORANGE FELON DIAPERS.
    The fishing industry sucks at creating names for things.
