Well deserved, but not for this movie. It was more a lifetime achievement Oscar, for the outrageously brilliant performances in Godfather II, Dog Day Afternoon and Serpico.
I remember the first time I saw this movie. Al Pacino was just so brilliant, totally blown away! I still say this is his finest work since The Godfather.
A "Jewish Bolshevik" would help accelerate a violent proxy war against a Bolshevik state? For some reason I find that hard to believe. Not denying he was a horrible person - but you know, throwing around words like Communist and Jewish to insult someone meritlessly isn't very intelligent.
They say Pacino won the oscar for the wrong movie, he should've won it for the godfather part II they say. well, I say it's a well-deserved Oscar for this movie, and he probably should've won a couple more.
im back, not Headhunterx1 I’d actually be happy to see Pitt get the Oscar. I think he’s a very under-appreciated actor. Obviously, he’s one of the biggest movie stars ever, but I still don’t think he gets the credit he deserves. He was great in Once upon a time...
have seen this film a million times, Al Pacino is just great from start to finish, before this scene when he enters in the house and the lady surprises him from behind he reacts so brilliantly, like a true blindman would do. Amazing
Bravo to Pacino's performance. I seen this movie a Long time ago. Remember gentleman be men to a Woman. The scent of her now and 10 years down the road Will never change, not the love she gave you wether awhile or Long time. Be great full and thankful. I may not be blind. I'll tell ya this , if you don't appreciate your Abundance. You'll end up alone with loss . Bc you threw it away or gave up on it , didn't know what you had till its gone. You'll never know how I relate to Al in this scene. It breaks my heart..
Remember his first murder in Godfather, sitting at the table, damn that was crazy that u can see his decision making just by looking at his silent face
Watch Soldier with Kurt Russel. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soldier_(1998_American_film) "Kurt Russell spoke only 104 words in the entire movie despite being in 85% of the scenes." Over all Kurt Russel might not be as good as Pacino but I don't think that there is a better movie where most of the acting is without speaking.
+PureMadness69 yes but when you're focusing on getting in character and remembering lines it becomes harder and a moment where you forget to act blind ruins the whole shot. acting well is hard enough acting well whilst acting blind is a real challenger.
I am simply stunned by this man's versatility. Legend for a reason. His eyes speaks thousand words, his eyes have got so much going on. Truly an exceptional artist.
I think I can only do that stare when I am wasted when my eyes, just wander and get lazy. Quite a remarkable performance. I may have to watch again. Thank you sir for the upload, and greetings from the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia.
ANYONE who disrespects Al Pacino in this scene has no soul!!!!!!!. Pacino broke my heart the first time I saw this film, I damn near felt suicidal after watching this scene in particular. Al made me forget I was watching a movie, felt like I was at the dinner table... This acting is beyond words, its almost Alien.
This film and especially this scene broke my heart back when i watched it when i was 12-13! James Kagney, Orson Welles, River Pheonix, John Cazale (5 oscars in 5 movies) and even Jackie Gleason in the honeymooners is a hard role to top.. Brando is up there as well because he is a superstar to emulate.
Pacino brings up here a trick Brando showed this profession in various films of his the genius of demonstrating. Be very calm, as if nothing is wrong with him in the scene at hand, then instantly explode the scene into a spectacular fury. Well done!
HOLY SHIT!! I even forgot that movie even EXISTED!! I'm gonna watch it once again RIGHT NOW! GREAT UPLOAD! Big thanks! :) Have a nice day everyone! :) ;)
I've seen this movie today (3 am) for the first time and I can say that I really, really love it!!!!!It's a wonderfull film with interessting characters and wonderfull actors and it's good without blood or dying people! A GOOD film!
The way the Colonel goes from smoldering rage to humiliation to utter anguish when Randy says "Some people don't deserve to see" and then back to rage is like shards of glass in the heart. Each emotion perfectly and wordlessly accomplished. What Jordan was to basketball and Nureyev was to dancing, Pacino truly is to acting.
Al Pacino ... my all-time favorite. It just doesn't get any better. When he got back from filming "Bobby Deerfield," overseas - I got a personal phone call as my Graduation gift along with 6 authentic signed photos. Thanks to Lori for taking care of me ...... 1976 ... what a pleasant surprise.
May we each sit at a table with such fortitude and defend! Al Pachino is a natural who doesn't need to act.... Thank you for this great clip. Sure wish I was in his arms doing the tango or holding the guy up while he worked him over!
Sorry about the mistake, but have no doubt it wasn't in the spell checker. I will post it to my computer desk. Thanks...........I hope you did enjoy my comment............. Again, thanks for being correct! Today is Veterans Day for which this movie portrays true patriotic input.
This scene is great. You can see that Frank was clearly hurt by everything he said about him, and even more he's hurt that even though he is blind his family does not care about him to invite him over for during the holidays. "Goodbye Willy...I'm no fucking good...never have been"...such great line delivery.
Important scene! Frank's reaction here is perfectly logical, he agrees with Randy!, he knows he failed those kids and it is eating him alive everyday. He's not going to beat the shit out of Randy for bringing the truth to the surface because, as rash and as crude as Frank is, he is a man of integrity. He respects and admires a good character and believes in strong men with integrity who want to do good in the world. This is why he defends Charlie so vigilantly and also why he (agrees with Randy) can't forgive himself for ruining the lives of those boys. Up to this point Frank has been a man on the edge just going through the motions, drinking, mocking reality, unwilling to come to terms with what he's done and what it means. Randy brings it to the surface for him and Frank even encourages it. Frank makes the decision to end his life here... He doesn't have the heart to tell Gretchen and the rest of the family (better they don't know). But he lets Willy know, 'bye Willy (..forever, because..) I'm no fuckin good...' Frank is the man in the dark, both physically and figuratively.
Mine in reverse. They just never bothered inviting each other. Both are kinda sad. Maybe that's why i became an A.R. coach, so i can get people out of toxic nonsense like that. And make no mistake, its as toxic as breathing in cigarette smoke every day.
MikeSPx24bj9 I disagree. This scene certainly but the full film in its entirety makes it clear that behind the brash behaviour he's a very deeply hurt and troubled man indeed.
I love the fact that Al only loses it when he gets Charlie's name wrong. I really was unsure about this movie but this was the point where I was hooked.
+Roger Hunter You mean the choke hold? One doesn't get to be an Army Ranger for nothing. One doesn't become a Ranger without learning about hand to hand combat.
+Roger Hunter Years and years of acting training with classes, mixed in with some natural talent, and excellent direction. Screen/stage presence helps too, but only for certain types of characters and the characters Pacino tends to play do need some type of presence that you can feel.
Al Pacino's character interjecting while the other guy was telling his story...I don't know why but I thought that was hilarious. Great acting. True professional.
I have a couple of blind friends & in this movie, Mr. Pacino makes you believe he's blind.
THAT is talent!
Mr. Pacino viewed everything through his peripheral vision. He didn't look at anything or anyone directly.
Jo DeMarc Except when he adjusts his hair after they break up the fight.
What did your blind friends themselves think of his portrayal though?
if they are blind then how the hell do they have any thoughts about a movie or al Pacino's portrayal
