  • In 1997, the locals and farmers living in the tight-knit town of Gothenburg decided to build a golf course. A bank loan, a couple of tractors, and a whole lotta sweat equity later, their prairie land masterpiece is now considered one of the best in the country. Wild Horse is the soul of the community, providing unforgettable memories for all who play it.

I broke down one time in Oklahoma... in the middle of no where.... just so happens I brought my clubs with... my dad was with me so while we were waiting for the my truck to be fixed on a monday... Sunday we played golf at the course down the road from the little hotel we stayed at... it was a beautiful day and a beautiful corse... my Father just passed away 2 weeks ago... this commercial just made me think of that day 15 years ago. 😏 good times with my Dad... I will always miss him and are golf outings.

Great feature! Incredible what a small town is capable of doing, when the decision is made to build something as beautiful as this golf course. Enjoy it!

How did they design it? I always read about how this guy and that guy, professional designers, designed all these courses. How did these farmers do it?

There were professional designers involved, but they weren't headline guys. The designers were Dave Axland and Dan Proctor, who worked for Coore and Crenshaw building Sand Hills. Plus, the natural flow of the land in western Nebraska and eastern Colorado is a bit like coastal Scotland and Ireland where the golf courses evolved without moving a lot of dirt. At some level, the limited construction resources may have helped in avoiding over-building the course when just respecting the natural landscape led to a great course.

Three of the local courses in my part of Central CA were built the same way. Groups of local, primarily farmers, did it all. Two were on donated land and one was bought very cheaply and local contractors donated services and equipment. No public money was used and these were all done 4o to 60 years ago. However, none are this good.
