What a great and soulful performance! I missed the Grammy Awards and could kick myself. I was 38 and raising my two kids back in 1988. I remember this song with its dreams and yearning. It sounds as poignant today to my 73 year old soul as it did back in the day. Thanks for posting this incredible duet.
@@melm4730 Thanks. I’m counting on it surfacing on UA-cam or elsewhere. It was quite a moment… I get the digital version of the NYT. I saw a headline of an article yesterday, Where Has Tracy Chapman Been? I’d like to know, too. Life tumbled along and she and the song had essentially vaporized from my consciousness. A third child and everything that comes with that will do it t’ ya…
@@evamorris9230 Thanks for your validation! It’s not that I didn’t find Tracy Chapman a new voice, but suddenly she was gone, perhaps in a “Fast Car” and we just couldn’t catch her at the next rest stop.
I have loved this song since 1988. I was a 33 year old mom with two sons & a husband. When Tracy came out with the her song it didn’t really relate to me. It actually did, I think a lot of us wanted to go away in a Fast Car sometimes in our younger days. Luke Combs has done a great cover so a new generation could discover the song. I love the way they sang it together .
One of the best of duets I have ever heard, So much passion in both their voices. It makes the song sound as if it was a conversation between two hopeful souls.

In 1989, I had a ticket to somewhere I knew any place was better than where I was at the time I, too, was starting from ground zero and truly had nothing to lose I was going to make something of myself Because I had something to prove I had a plan to get out of there But I would have to drive far 960 miles, to be exact I'd cross the Georgia border and into another city I'd start a new job and finally see what it means to be living My car was fast enough for me to fly away I made a decision so I would not have to live & die that way My decision involved leaving someone I cared about But knowing that what we had (or what we didn't have) would not be enough to sustain me in my life...
We got together one weekend after I moved. It was never the same and we drifted apart. I wrote her a marvelous recommendation that helped her get into grad school. She married had two girls and lived in Seattle, Washington. I married and had one daughter in New York. I received a call last summer from a mutual friend who told me she committed suicide. Tragic.
I love this still. I been crying hearing this two days past Grammys.❤ I can’t believe they were cheering for my girl. Been listening to her since 1988 as a 14 yrs old when this song came out. entire album is great. Thank you, Tracy and Luke.❤
At 14 , she got caught up in a race riot , said a gun was shoved in her face and was told to run for her life. She miraculously got a scholarship to a private boarding school and the rest is history
I don’t know why you can’t see the live performance. They sound perfect together Their voices blend well. Tracey sounds like time has stood still, her voice is still perfection. Luke sings it phenomenal because it’s his favorite song and that definitely translates into this performance
Wow! This beautifully soulful song has always been a real jewel. Tracey and Luke’s voices are a peach-perfect match together! Just brilliant! Love this!
She wrote one of the best songs ever and it would win again in 35 years if done by another good artist.I love how she has aged, almost regal and so warm in all her expressions
Perfect description of Tracy! There was something about her presence here that I couldn't articulate, but you just did. I really wish she would start touring again, I bet her shows would be packed.
There are very few song remakes that are any good at all to those of us that have been around long enough to hear the original. THIS is a true exception! And for BOTH to be singing it together just knocks it right out of the universe! One of the other rare remakes is Simon and Garfunkels Sound of Silence performed by Disturbed! For a pair of 66 year old ears these two remakes ride the express route right deep into my soul!💕💕
It’s so beautiful that we got the opportunity to witness two incredible artists come together and what a wonderful moment is was and I’m so thankful that we can now rewatch it
I like Luke Combs very much but is not in the pantheon of great artists yet. He may get there one day but he ain’t there yet. That’s why it’s astounding that Tracy got there with her very first song. A very profound song that seems to touch everyone’s heart.
This black Detroit 60's chick loved this duet! Loved tracy Chapman she was and is beautiful. I always loved country music along with soul and rock. This is a beautiful soulful combination.😊 Thank you luke combs for bringing this gem back on the charts.
Yeah this was off the chain! Tracy gets better and better! Just love her voice! She is amazing! So glad she got on that stage. Luke was good too! Loved the two together! Yeah Fast Car is a classic and is timeless! Thank you Grammys for getting these two on stage! They won the Grammy of all time. Peace and love
It was the highlight of the Grammys. I hope Tracy knows how much she has brought to all of us that have been listening to her since this was a brand new song. She looked & sounded wonderful! ❤.
listened to this multiple times… watched the full vid from luke combs instagram (reels), their duet, its magical. she looked overwhelmingly happy with the response and luke gave her the respect she deserves. he looked like he was in cloud nine.
I remember too… I was 12 and in 6th grade. I loved the song, loved Tracy Chapman, but I know now that I didn’t truly understand the words. Now, with a few more years behind me, this song is still one of my top ten, but for different reasons; it hits different now. A beautiful piece of musical art.
Always loved this song. Wore it out when it came out. Grateful they did this song together. Wish Tracey was still performing but respect her views on performing. Just love her
This would have been the only reason for me to watch the grammys this year. I've been hoping and praying for this collaboration. I miss her voice and creativity.
I missed it too. We found it on X and it was literally removed asap. Why can’t they show it? It brings us happiness. Something we could all use a bit of right now. Well thank you for uploading the song. We can listen to them together. I appreciate it.
I remember seeing Tracy sing this when touring the UK back when she released this album…..just her, a high stool, a spotlight and the ICC full of stars…..her voice hasn’t changed one bit…..and it still touches your soul……
So many great memories. Our first born came in 1988 and I would play this song and Baby can I hold you. He would fall asleep for hours with it softly playing in his nursery. Thank you Tracy❤ Great job on the remake Luke Combs.
With all the valid criticisms of the Grammies, once in a while, something like this comes along and reminds me (and hopefully others) that music can transcend.....this is so gorgeous in every possible way.
Great post! In 1988 I was 35, working a temp job. I worked late and weekends in a basement office. I played Tracy's tape constantly.... Sang along when I was alone and wouldn't be disturbing anyone. I like this post because you see only the two performers. Don't care abt closeups of audience members. Tracy has such a beautiful face and shy sweet smile. Great to see her! Thank you. 😎💋🎶

it does
That’s what the songs always been though
It was 1988 and I bought Tracy Chapman's LP, "Fast Car". I lived in Atlanta and I would play it over and over again.
In 1989, I had a ticket to somewhere
I knew any place was better than where I was at the time
I, too, was starting from ground zero and truly had nothing to lose
I was going to make something of myself
Because I had something to prove
I had a plan to get out of there
But I would have to drive far
960 miles, to be exact
I'd cross the Georgia border and into another city
I'd start a new job and finally see what it means to be living
My car was fast enough for me to fly away
I made a decision so I would not have to live & die that way
My decision involved leaving someone I cared about
But knowing that what we had (or what we didn't have) would not be enough to sustain me in my life...
Wow.. touching story. So did u catch up with your love again?
We got together one weekend after I moved. It was never the same and we drifted apart. I wrote her a marvelous recommendation that helped her get into grad school. She married had two girls and lived in Seattle, Washington. I married and had one daughter in New York.
