Worked on the Sykes in the summer of 1970 as a deckhand. It was great to see her again on your tour. Clarence Miller was the Captain, Tony was the first mate and Marv was third mate. I still get to see her in the channel in Grand Haven, and Muskegon. Check out my Master salute video with the USS Silversides in Muskegon. Thank you
Thank you so much for sharing. The Wilfred Sykes was made in my hometown in Lorain, Ohio, not long after I was born. She was 'born' at the end of my street where I lived. She is so special and it is great to know she is still working the Great Lakes. She should become a museum ship one day.
That was very cool! Thanks for the video. I am a truck driver, and have hauled fuel to the Sykes many times. I would love to spend a week on this boat.
G'day, David! Right-on! Awesome video! Agree, "she's a beauty!!" By the way... I too, would love to spend a week (or) two on this boat. Plus! The S.S. Wilfred Sykes, also is one of my favorites! Thank you! Cheers! 😊✌🏼🚢❤️
This ship was out on the Lake, trailing the Edmund Fitzgerald as they had loaded up opposite each other. During their journey, The Cap. noticed by his weather charts a big storm was brewing & took refuge in Thunder Bay. The Fitz should have done so, too. Smart decision on the Sykes.
A lot of mistakes were made by Mcsorley. Not only should've checked up earlier in the trip, but should've declared an emergency late in the afternoon when they knew they were sinking. Instead he boldly kept racing for the bay and never gave the crew a fighting chance
Family members of the lost crew mentioned their loved one complained about Capt McSorley never seeking shelter from a storm. Later they went through the records at the Soo from 1965-1975 & found that only one captain had never taken shelter in bad weather: McSorley.
While working for US Steel we had annual United Way raffles for a trip on the Edwin H Gott, which I never won dammit! So I'm in the same boat as you, LOL
Having worked in ship repair yard the ships we have come in now from the far East are not as well built as this old lady,, pride not price,☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️ from northern Ireland 😁😁😁😁
I'm just jealous. closest i ever got to a laker was watching the Medusa Challenger mess up traffic in chicago. I'm 60 i look at things that use to be rote to me; and the name just isn't there anymore? never called them thingies. usually use profanity. looked like fun!
stanley kwiecinski Well, Stanley, I’m 78. Been watching these big boats forever. Never thought I would even get aboard one. My nephew is crew on the Sykes, and family can get aboard for a trip. I’m really glad I got the chance!
My older bro.(62) owns a pontoon boat somewhere in illinois? Laker it ain't! My 74 shovelhead doesn't like(nor i) like long trips anyway. So you say; thingies. i'll say #$!^*)*^&**% ers! Have a good life! Riding chicago streets keep my profanity on full song!

It is evident the boat has been well maintained.
I always wanted to get a trip on a lake oat. Never got the chance. Tried entering contests etc. but now at 70 yrs old I don’t think it will happen

Wow. Got two trips out of your week. Lucky.
(She's my favorite boat.)

Nicely informative video collage 🤗
Real nice video, I watched it on the big screen
Cool!
what are the barrels for?
How did you manage to get passage on a Great Lakes freighter?
the ugly boat is not ugly. it is one of a kind with its pilot house replaced
"One of a kind" can describe most oreboats.
David Durkee; thingies??? nice video though!
Well, I’m not an engineer. But it was one of the best times I’ve ever had.

That was an Ugly boat
She is my favorite too. They have been getting around more this year.
I don’t really know. Could be oil for machines. I think I was told that’s what they were. Either waste or new.
