You guys weren’t wrong, this performance was amazing! Please comment below other great Rush live shows we should look into checking out! Have a great day friends!! 😁🔥
OK Guys.....I was a RUSH groupie in the mid 70's. Alex...you said you snuck up to the front when you saw them live? I sat 6 feet away from Alex backstage here in San Antonio, 2 nights, back to back. I still have my stage passes from 10-22-77 & 10-23-77. Of course, I'll never forget those days! They were serious musicians....they weren't party boys. They went straight back to their hotel rooms after the shows! Saw them even long before that with my first boyfriend when they first toured in 74\75 with their original drummer. I knew even then that they were GREAT and would be around for decades. ALL of them SO RIDICULOUSLY talented! SIX FEET AWAY from Lifeson on both nights!! I still pinch myself thinking about how great they were and how lucky I was to see them perform LIVE when they were still so young. The pictures of them on 2112 is exactly how they looked back then! This video of YYZ is great...the audience is totally synchronized! They really were/are one of the greatest bands EVER!!
Lucy... yes, they were serious but that's not all, Rush was one of the bands that toured the most extensively. Over 200 concerts a year, year after year for at least 30 years. Grueling, explains why they went to bed so early. :)
@@kavemankarl2588 They toured for 5+ decades ….. the washing machine represented working band…. I saw them during the roll bones tour in Connecticut driving from PA
Only at Rio de Janeiro can an audience turn an instrumental into lyrics. This audience is just captivating I think it's one of the best live shows I've ever seen.
Alongside the early live performances of The Beatles, this is the most intense live concert audience in popular music history. As with The Beatles' case, the sound on this DVD is problematic because the crowd is matching the entire amplification system. The best "YYZ" on DVD is the Clockwork Angels tour version, which you can hear well, and the string section adds a nice soundscape compliment.
Rush is the very definition of world class musicians who can blow peoples minds and scale the heights of the musical soul....all while also doing the laundry.
Atention: I from Brazil. The largest number of people in a show in the whole history of the band. 60 thousand people in sp and 40 thousand in Maracanã staduin, Rio de janeiro. I was There
I was in this show!November 2002. I am Brazilian from Belo Horizonte and traveled to Rio de Janeiro for the rush show, the band had never come to South America and first time in Brazil, the show in sao paulo was the biggest audience in the history of rush and Rio de Janeiro It is the second largest public in rush history in the world.
Eu fui no de Porto Alegre, já que sou de lá e hoje moro no interior do Rio Grande do Sul! Pensa no meu orgulho, assistir a maior banda do mundo no estádio do meu time, Grêmio (estádio Olímpico)! Realmente pra mim foi marcante! E hoje fazem exatamente 21 anos daquele 20 de novembro de 2001, um dos melhores dias da minha vida! 😍😉👌
One of the things I like most about Rush is how much they genuinely like each other. After 40+ years, they just have fun playing. You also used a phrase I've used many times describing them. World class musicians. They are all music nerds, and play so tight. Their musicianship is unparalleled. The first time I saw this video, the crowd singing the instrumental just absolutely blew my mind.
@@graefe827 You may be correct, but the background of YYZ's creation is similar. "Music by Lee & Peart" if I recall correctly from the liner notes. Ah, yes. www.2112.net/powerwindows/movingpictures.html (click on track title)
Favourite live version right here. A lot of it was because of the intensity of the fans too. They were singing the song like there are lyrics. Absolutely phenomenal. Band and crowd were at 100 that night. So glad you reacted to this one!
The Brazilian public waited for many years for this Rush concert in Brazil and that's why the excitement was huge! I went on this tour at the show in Porto Alegre, south of Brazil! And it was really worth it!
Coming back to your reac after awhile: there is a super long interview/reflection they did (like over an hour) where the three comment on Rio. It was their first time in South America - despite the years. While playing that Rio gig, they were completely blown away by the crowd to the point of almost groveling humility. At the same time, it was the must adrenaline boosting performance of their lives...and, as is the case in such situations, it collectively just pushed them to that next level in performance. Imagine what that must have been like as the musicians on the stage.
By the way..... YYZ is the airport code for Toronto. Their home. Also... the VERY beginning of the song, with first Neil's chimes and then the band, THAT is Morse Code for......... YYZ ! Neil heard it once and, "it got stuck in my head !"
This is my favorite Rush concert on dvd, mostly for the excitement and energy the Rio fans brought to the concert. This was Rush's first time visiting Brazil, and it showed in the anticipation from the fans. There's a clip of man with his hands held together in prayer, thanking God for bringing Rush to Brazil (Priceless), as Rush opens with Tom Sawyer. Just imagine going 30 to 40 years loving Rush and then finally seeing them live. What I love about Rush live is there no dropoff in the song, in fact, I think they sound better live. To see the impossible, is believing (how'd they do that). Boys you have to do Natural Science soon, I'm just waiting to see your reaction to this epic song. I also think you should do Peart's drum solo live in Rio as well.
Im old and saw them in their hey day so to speak, and holy hell these guys are amazing!!!! This concert here showcases just that! Rush forever! RIP professor
When I see your reactions, I'm reliving my reaction as a 16 year old seeing them live for the first time. Sept. 18, 1980 at the Lee Civic Center in Ft. Myers FL. A concert that changed my life....no hyperbole...really. I was fortunate to see them 20 times live and my son (now 19) saw them 4 times. Thanks for sharing your reactions!
First saw Rush in Sep. of '74. They opened for some band called...... KISS !!!? Well sure KISS was awesome, heh heh... but "who was that first band ?" Met them in Tacoma in '76 at a tiny record store, made Alex laugh like crazy. He lost it. Invited me to the show, and have since met them many times. Miss my "freunden" !
Ever been to a concert that was so loud you couldn't hear anything? Such was my experience when I saw Rush in 1984 at an indoor venue just north of Chicago. Everyone stood on their chairs for the entire show yelling at the top of their lungs. We were on the main fl. about 20 rows back and were either in some weird sound vortex, or the mix was bad, or those giant amps were turned up so loud that individual instruments and Geddy Lee's voice all melded into one massive sound wave/vibration that was so intense that I'm sure affected wildlife in the area. I remember at some point jumping down off my chair just so the bodies in front of me could blunt some of the vibration that I was literally feeling in my teeth. The high energy of this crowd kinda takes me back to that. I always intended to give them (or me) a second chance, but never got around to it. The raw talent of these guys cannot be denied. Just wish I could have appreciated it more live.
@@mrheem44 You got it! Horrendous acoustics. Saw a lot of concerts there in the 80s and found mid main fl to be the optimum spot. But nothing helped for this show although I do remember being further stage right than I expected. A disaster. Haven't been there (for a concert) since they renovated it and re-christened it Allstate Arena. I can only hope they fixed some of the sound issues.
Just watch the entire Rush in Rio concert with a home theater surround sound setup. It's incredible! The audience is insane and the guys really feed off of it. It's like 50,000 people in a synchronized jam. Awesome!
One of the best channels on YT. Keep the good work, guys. Great react. I"m from Brazil and I was there! It was just insane. The entire concert. Power trio is unique! Sad that they're retired. Best band! The music miss them. Suggestion: Xanadu from Exit Stage Left.
One thing that is truly incredible and inventive, is that at the beginning of the song Neil taps out the morse code for YYZ and then Alex and Geddy also play the morse code to begin. Listen carefully (Y= long-short-long-long, Z=long-long-short-short) 2 Ys and then the Z. BTW YYZ is the code for Pearson Intl Airport in Toronto.
I've seen *every* Rush tour since 1976 except 1981-83 when I was stationed in Iceland. I took my 2 sons to Snakes and Arrows tour for their very first concert and they LOVED it. They were mesmorized for all 3 hours!
I was at The Gorge for the Time Machine 2011 tour...last show of the tour, btw. I've seen Rush probably 8 times in my life, mostly 80s and 90s shows. They do such an amazing live show.
This may have been mentioned already in here but I'm watching your critique and when you talked about the guitar being turned down, do yourself a favor and get this DVD and watch the documentary on this set of show is over in Brazil. You'll feel lucky to even be watching this at all. It's amazing they even pulled this show off with the weather and what they were recording with. It truly is a small miracle this got pulled off at all
I saw them 21 times all in st. Louis mo. Hemipheres and every year after they played even got neils autograph.lifes been good. Thanks rush you rock & rule🎓🎼
While touring Europe, they band got the word that they were very popular down there and getting thousands of requests to play in Rio, which surprised them. So they winged it and added Rio to the tour and went down there only to go through an equipment ordeal with rain during setup. So the band was a bit tense, which worked out okay since they put that energy to good use. The Rio fans were never expecting Rush to actually alter their schedule to show up. The people showed their gratitude.
The crashing noise you hear between the breaks of the guitar solo is the sound of windchimes tied to a 2x4 slapped against a wood table. The band confirmed this in an interview on WNEW New York in the winter of 2002.
Gratuitously long comment, but I'm old, so I'm entitled. LOL I saw them three times in the 70s, and still have my ticket stubs. I abandoned the band when they got past the Signals album, thinking they had jumped the shark. Within the past year a friend gave me her unwanted copy of the live DVD of the Snakes and Arrows tour. It blew me away! Their newer stuff is every bit as good as their older stuff, but they had grown up...and obviously grown up together. The music is solid, their instrumentation is solid, and they became even a more cohesive whole. The fun they have is just so obvious, and they love being both maestros, and goofballs!
I saw them live 4 X's in the early 80s. Fan since 76/77. I too still have the stubs plus two whole tickets that a friend and I didn't use but got in anyway in Providence. May have been the Moving Pictures tour. I'd have to dig them out.
Got a Ticket Stub of Grace Under Pressure with Geddy Lees autograph !!!! I love all their music, but am partial to Counterparts , Clockwork Angels , Permanent Waves, Hemispheres and Signals. Then I like M.Pictures etc, etc.
The Rio crowd singing the melodies during Natural Science gives that song a whole new dimension, injecting a haunting yet beautiful backdrop to an already amazing tune!! A shout out to all of the Brazilian fans that made that recording something special, you all know how to rock!!!
Neil Peart miss catching the drum stick? Dude, we are talking about Neil f---ing Peart, The Professor! Love your channel, keep up the good work, cheers from the Great White North!
...and he has a quiver of back-ups in quick reach anyway for breakage and such, but yes... how many times in his 40 years has he done that? Miss? Pfffttt.
Shawn Anderson he has like a thousand extra drum sticks in stick bags on his drums. If he drops no big deal. Just grab an extra. I’ve seen him drop it. Also the extra sticks are there for when he breaks one. Which he usually throws those into the audience.
FYI the day Rush in Rio concert it was raining. From what I remember they didn't have a full soundcheck because it took so long to get to the stadium, so they plugged in and just let it rip. Also of note, according to the band, the recording mix took was difficult because the equipment was so primitive. I always thought this version sounded better live than other versions because it sounds so raw and heavy.
Have you guys ever heard the audience sing along with a song that has no lyrics? That crowd was having a ball. I wish I was there. AMAZING. Seven Bridges Road by the Eagles.
YYZ off their earlier "Exit Stage Left " album is recommended here. epic drum solo in the middle of the song with a seamless re-entry. I think it is by far the best recording of this song by the guys.
Roman Turner ABSOLUTELY- This live composition features Neil’s most brilliantly performed & technically well-executed drum solos to have ever been released officially by Rush, IMO. Listen through headphones as this live recording is lacking a degree of immediacy, so subtleties of his dynamic performance may go unappreciated...! ✨ Enjoy! 🦉
The bass player was really into to it, which I LOVED!!! Also, who plays on a drum kit that huge!?!?!? I didn't know that there were no words to this song, seemed like a jam session, but it was fine.
The looks on you guys' faces while watching - so enthralled as if you were watching the universe unfold or something! Seen quite a few of your vids now and I love you guys btw.
For an even better Rush concert, check out R30. The opening "R30 Overture" is truly amazing. The mix is almost all soundboard. Very little audience noise messing things up.
If you watch the documentary "The Boys In Brazil" you will find out they started this show late because of road flooding on the trip to Rio. They were unable to do a sound check before the show.
I think you guys would really enjoy Porcupine Tree! They’re another band that’s a must-see live. You should check out the song “Anesthetize” live in Tilburg... you won’t be disappointed.
Few comments, I was there in one of shows of this Brazil tour and I remember that Neil was having some problems with his electronics because of a big rain they got in São Paulo, which was before Rio, so maybe that's why we didn't hear the glass breaking noise. Also, Neil (and most drummers) will always have many drum sticks in very accessible bag during the show, because it is not unusual for a stick to break or even to fly of your hands. On the crowd, check soccer game crowds in Latin America and you will understand. Not only that, but this shows were their first time in Brazil, so imagine that we had never though we would see them live ever and suddenly they were right there, it was really a dream come true.
One of my favorite live performances is AC/DC Live at River Plate, Argentina!! The entire concert is friggin amazing....you need to check that out...the audience is amazing also!! Rock On! 🎶
Rush has been together for so long that they are having fun. About the recording - it had been bad weather in Rio, so they did not have time to do sound checks and stuff, so what you hear is what it was on that night. Also, the band had said the crowd was insane and that they fed that energy off each other. Just a magical performance the whole concert.
Because so much of there music was bought underground in South America, RUSH never new they had that big of a following. Have to watch the Live Rio Documentary.
The most super charged power trio of all time! There are many power trios that I adore, but Rush is from another reality. Loved the reaction and agree about the the Alex's volume and the "glass shatter". Rock on brothers!
Rush is amazing. I think it's YYZed since they're Canadian but I've been saying YYZ my whole life. The live version from Exit Stage Left, well that whole album, is a masterpiece. Enjoy more Rush. Rock on!
You're right about the "YYZed" pronunciation. I have heard Alex Lifeson pronounce it that way in an interview about the song. In fact, it is only in the USA that the letter "Z" is pronounced like "Zee". Most english speakers outside USA will pronounce it "Zed". Note that it is the same pronunciation in french. So, you can say that english-canadians and french-canadians are united by the Zed! 😉
The first time I saw rush live was March 2nd 1981 in Milwaukee. I was 13 years old, and it was the moving pictures tour. Neil did his drum solo in YYZ, and the encore was La Villa Strangiato. It blew my mind.
Them retiring is heartbreaking. Seeing them for Presto with the giant inflatable rabbits, Snakes and Arrows with the giant psychedelic screen, every amazing show is something I'll always have with me. I saw Rush several times, and every single time they crushed it.
I first heard this in a CD store at a listening station. From the opening note of the concert,(Tom Sawyer) the crowd sang every part of the songs. I got total goosebumps!! The film doc is even better. They had absolutely no idea how much Rio loved them!
Anything from this concert "Rush live in Rio" One little Victory is awesome O Bautirista (drum solo and probably butchered the name) ~Exit Stage Left live~ Just pick anything 😁 I've must have seen these guys 20+ times live and it's something to see. I'm a Peart fan, but to see Geddy juggle all those instruments is unbelievable. Thanks and take care ✌
You guys remind me so much of my buds from my college daze when we would pass the bong and listen to this stuff fresh. Rock on and have fun! -Crazy Uncle Jim
I’m 58 and Love watching you guys react to my life!😁😁😁 I have a ton more selections if you want! There is so much more. You will be old men before you get to it all!
I saw the " Roll The Bones " tour. At one point in the show, the stage became a three dimensional projection of a craps table and Alex lifeson was in the middle of the table ripping into a guitar solo with a guitar that had a mirror face on it, and the spotlights were reflecting off of it beaming around the arena. Rush were awesome live.
Hey guys, i was in this crowd, near to the stage! It was at Maracanã Stadium (the biggest in the world!) in november 23, 2002. Maybe the greatest show in my life, amazing, wonderful!!!

I could see from your eyes that you really loved this, Alex!! Great musicians for sure!
YYZ is the code for the Pearson International airport in Toronto... and of course, we pronounce WHY WHY ZED :D
It truly is a small miracle this got pulled off at all
Watching that Sea of Humanity never gets old! So glad you chose this one, cheers!
I saw them 21 times all in st. Louis mo. Hemipheres and every year after they played even got neils autograph.lifes been good. Thanks rush you rock & rule🎓🎼
Classic. This reaction shocked the band for sure.
I'm from Rio, I was there. Epic !
It's amazing what happens when your guitarist goes out for a meal. Epic song choice!!
Great reaction and commentary! Those bazillion Brazilians were crazy into it!
The crashing noise you hear between the breaks of the guitar solo is the sound of windchimes tied to a 2x4 slapped against a wood table. The band confirmed this in an interview on WNEW New York in the winter of 2002.
Dudes I seen them live 3 times when I was a kid back in early 80s
Gratuitously long comment, but I'm old, so I'm entitled. LOL
I saw them three times in the 70s, and still have my ticket stubs.
Snakes and Arrows was a great show. Digital Man from that concert is great!
I have most of my concert stubs. If you squeeze them in a stack, they barely fit into a beer koozie.
Yes, Far Cry is now one of my Favorites!
The Rio crowd singing the melodies during Natural Science gives that song a whole new dimension, injecting a haunting yet beautiful backdrop to an already amazing tune!! A shout out to all of the Brazilian fans that made that recording something special, you all know how to rock!!!
Leave That Thing Alone Live 2011, another world class performance that seldom gets mentioned
YES YES YES YES BASS SOLO
geddy lee apologized for "indulging" on that instrumental lol!
I saw the Roll the Bones tour in the early 90's featuring Primus
I saw him during that tour in Connecticut🎉😂❤
@@anthonyshukerstaff3369 It was a joke Anthony, it was a just a joke... .
I had that DVD, I wore that sucker OUT.
100+Thousand people in a Soccer stadium.
They had a HUGE Fanbase in RIO but that was the 1st time there.
The best thing about this performance is that they have the crowd singing along to an INSTRUMENTAL! Rush is so freaking awesome.
I've seen Rush a few times myself and wish I could have been at that concert.
I actually got to play Neil Peart's very first kit. He gave it to one of his childhood friends that brought it to one of my jams.
Have you guys ever heard the audience sing along with a song that has no lyrics? That crowd was having a ball. I wish I was there. AMAZING. Seven Bridges Road by the Eagles.
I was there, at the the MARACANA, ill never forget, greetings from Chile guys, blessings.
Enjoy! 🦉
remember it rained all day before concert no sound check still played as amazing as ever!
Neil Peart's massive drum set was literally pushed up to where he was actually sitting, in order for him to perform. He was a true perfectionist!
I just watched the video from Live in Rio cuz i watched you guys react to 2112 and your head motions are the exact same as mine lol
Yes@@@@@!!!!!!!!!!!!
1st Rush show '77, A Farewell to Kings tour.
Last, 2014.
All time favorite band. I'm a sick old fanboy.
Love your reactions men.
First Rush show 1973 Laura Secord HS St. Catharines, with Rutsey on drums. Last was last time in TO.
Thanks, guys. You worked it in for us (me)! You are correct. They are master musicians!
@JTB Jr
Your welcome! And damn straight!
The bass player was really into to it, which I LOVED!!! Also, who plays on a drum kit that huge!?!?!? I didn't know that there were no words to this song, seemed like a jam session, but it was fine.
Incredible energy from that crowd. Really enjoyed your reaction to this fantastic video.
Yes, this is a common thing in concerts in Southamerica (Argentina, Brasil, etc)
The looks on you guys' faces while watching - so enthralled as if you were watching the universe unfold or something! Seen quite a few of your vids now and I love you guys btw.
Thanks for the video guys
Caught them in San Antonio at the Municipal Auditorium in 1976 and 4 times since. Each show better than the last.
Rest in Peace, Neil.
Xanadu - Exit Stage Left video. Greatest live performance captured. You won't believe what you see and hear.
Rush In Rio! 🇧🇷
YYZ is Toronto Airport designation and the beginning of the song is YYZ in Morse code musically.
Yes! Was hoping you guys would watch this one.
Thanx man, gonna have to check out that Doc.
Oh yes RUSH in RIO is a MUST see!
The most super charged power trio of all time! There are many power trios that I adore, but Rush is from another reality. Loved the reaction and agree about the the Alex's volume and the "glass shatter". Rock on brothers!
Great review, but props to the audience; they were awesome and made this concert so much better!!! Yeah, did miss the shattering, glass.
I always thought it sounded like the crack of a whip or something. Or smacking wood blocks together.
John Wallace - It’s definitely a whip crack!
The sound you are trying to identify is a piece of plywood being smacked against a stool . You have to wear gloves as not to get spinters..
Just wow!! Never saw that before. Blown away. Great reaction boys. And live video... Young Man's Blues by The Who.
UK here. Yeah it's 'Zed'.
I see in live... fantastic!!!🇧🇷
Caught the St. Louis show of their final tour and it was just as amazing -- you could tell they were having a blast despite Neil's health issues.
I caught there 1981 tour for my first time changed my life
I first heard this in a CD store at a listening station. From the opening note of the concert,(Tom Sawyer) the crowd sang every part of the songs. I got total goosebumps!!
The film doc is even better. They had absolutely no idea how much Rio loved them!
Anything from this concert "Rush live in Rio"
One little Victory is awesome
O Bautirista (drum solo and probably butchered the name)
~Exit Stage Left live~
Just pick anything 😁
I've must have seen these guys 20+ times live and it's something to see. I'm a Peart fan, but to see Geddy juggle all those instruments is unbelievable.
Thanks and take care ✌
Rick Haddad “O Baterista” 😂
But thx for trying 👍🏼
First time I saw them was May 15, 1982, Glens Falls Civic Center, Glen Falls, New Yorkastan .
RIP Neil Peart! The best percussionist and lyricist of all time. You will be missed
This song has the best drum solo I’ve ever heard, but it’s from the “EXIT Stage Left” album, check it out
I think that old version is better than the newer ones.
Hey guys, i was in this crowd, near to the stage! It was at Maracanã Stadium (the biggest in the world!) in november 23, 2002. Maybe the greatest show in my life, amazing, wonderful!!!
