Popovici is the first 18 and under to go faster than Thorpe in the 200, 21 years later. Swimming records are not meant to last that long. Thorpe is the greatest freestyle swimmer of all time period.
Greatest rivalry in professional swimming history. Two of the all time greats battling over 100m and 200m for years, and competing in the relays. Both phenomenal and class acts in and out of the pool. Love em' both.
Hoogenband beat Thorpe only 3 of 17 meetings in 200, including short course. Thorpe beat Hoogenband 0 of 11 meetings in 100, including short course. Not such a great rivalry, Hoogenband winning every single 100 metre encounter, and Thorpe almost every single 200 encounter. There was no back and forth in either distance, which is what defines a great rivalry, like Lochte and Phelps who traded wins constantly in all of the 200 IM, 400 IM, 200 backstroke, and 200 freestyle
Undoubtedly the best middle distance freestyler of all time. Great technique and executed his race plans perfectly. People who talk about his suit giving him an advantage obviously haven't followed swimming closely over the years, otherwise they would know that these suits in 2001 were still textile.

He wanted to make himself as fast as he could and he had the resources to hire the best in the world that could make him as fast as he wanted. Not saying the suit made him what he was, but that suit was just as good as the lazer if not better, and he would NOT swim as fast as he did without it, I would go as far as to say he would loose alot of titles without that specific suit:P

Compared to most sub 1:45 swims, thorpe actually went out slow. Most 1:44 swimmers reached halfway in sub 51 and the 150 under 1:18. So what got thorpe this ridiculously fast time? A 25.8 last 50, the second fastest ever behind Paul Biedermanns suit aided record.
Thorpie went ‘full throttle’ only in the last 50, given what happened in Sidney. I think that he’d have done 1.43.5 or better had he done a full race on his own, as he usually did in 400. Fukuoka ‘01 Thorpe is something we’ll never see again.

Even though it is obvious Thorpe is about 100 times more likely doping (especialy after the failed drug test) than VDH, and when VDH who again is supposably friends with Thorpe would never say such a slanderous thing about Thorpe and even defended him after the initial positive doping test he later was cleared off which most people wouldn't then. To go in the lower 1:44 range and beneath that you have to go out fast and be able to charge at then end. And bc that’s so hard there’s only 3 to 4 times that happened in swimming history!

swimmers like biedermann phelps and lochte don't have much of a choice. they have loping strokes, and to improve a loping stroke you have to pick and commit to one side.

Not be slow time.... After supersuit's period, only one time Yannick Agnel performed better than Thorpe's on London (1:43.14). Now the best swimmer in 200 is Sun Yang but his PB is only 1:44.47 although he has swum 1:45 sub many times.
