Thorpe's strokes look like there in slow motion and yet his speed is so strong. He looks so at ease. A great example of form.
Also helps when the dude has flippers as feet lol
A swimmer who was swimming next to Thorpe, once said that Thorpe is such a powerful swimmer, that he felt he was stuck in a washing machine.
It was game over after Thorpe swam the first leg. Australia owned them lol
Andy Le pretty good move going with their two best swimmers first. There was no way they would’ve lost after that
@@frasergibson5763 It just the Americans couldn't smash them like guitars haha So funny to see the look in the Americans faces.
WOW! 20 years ago and it was just as exciting to watch. The other teams were just left behind. Legendary performance. Proud tears on my cheeks!
Australian team is faster then my internet
😂
Lol yes
Underrated comment. Btw, 230th like
"than", not "then".
@@Anonymouse-nn9td underrated and writen wrongly
those were the days
I was just about to say the same thing!!
Absolutely they were! Including. Catherine Freeman’s 400 metres!!
yea really
I still remember this race proud to be Australian 🇦🇺
What an incredible era of Australian swimmers after the Perkins era was the Hackett era and after to Popolv era came the Thorpe Era. 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
And still going stronger then ever 😊.
What an Aussie song to go with it, we were legendary back then, we're still good, but nowhere near as good as back then.
SilentHotdog28 Australia is better than ever, so is the opposition.
Agreed
I'd agree with you in terms of the men, but the women are better than ever today.
The current Aussie women team is 🔥🔥🔥 and so much better than the men’s
Thorpes race is pure eye candy for swim fans. Magnificent swimming.
I'm Puerto Rican, Australian 🇵🇷 and I never been so proud of Australia 🤠 and Ian Thorpe,!!! tears came to my eyes the moment we upset the Americans! que Viva Australia........😆😁😁😃
Ian Thorpe is so smooth and effortless 😩😩😩😩😩😩 Gliding through the water
Circa 2000 is the best year and the most unforgettable Olympics in history...Australia excelled in swimming here because of Ian Thorpe, and right on his own homeland. It's just sad that his swimming career didn't last very long, unlike Phelps that enjoyed breaking world records, collected a bunch of gold medals and dominated this most exciting sports in Olympics. It's ok Thorpe, you are still my idol, you and Phelps ! Long live both of you, and God bless...
Hoho Van den Hoogenband was the best in Sydney
Had Thorpe raced again Phelps after 2004 Olympics he’d NEVER been beaten by him. And, had Thorpe raced in Rome 2009 now we’d have had 3.35 in 400 and sub-1.40 in 200 free. BUT... Who really cares, when you can still see this UNMATCHED stroke in these videos.
USA excelled a little better than Australia. 14 gold to Australia’s 5. And 33 medals to 18. Aussies got smashed, what planet are you on Bruce?
BRUCE ALCORIZA Do you think he still would’ve been as good if he wasn’t allowed allowed to wear that swimsuit like they aren’t today? I reckon he still would, but I’ve argued with people saying that he wouldn’t be
@@Cmentify USA population in year 2000 - 282.2 million. Australia population in year 2000 - 19.15 million. 14 times the Australian population! California alone had 33.63 million. Given that, I'd say the Aussies did rather well and the yanks underachieved given the massive pool of talent they had to choose from.
The race was for silver and bronze really. No one was catching those Australians.
I remember watching this live on telly at home (Aussie by the way, the whole country schools had an extra 2 weeks off)...we were screaming our lungs out like nobody’s business ✌🏼🇦🇺🇦🇺
Everyone on the team swam their role to perfection
5:04 AUSTRALIA THAT IS THE BEST DIVE I HAVE EVER SEEN IN OLYMPIC HISTORY.
PROUD TO BE AUSSIE
That was absurd. The guy dived half The pool. Amazing!!!
In my time you learn that people have talent and strength that won the day like these guys did. That is why they are winners and I am proud.
Australian swimmers were a joy to watch. Bravo.
Klim was an all-time Aussie great in my estimation.
Thorpe was 6'5" (196 cms)) tall. Looking at the image of the Aussie team at 1.32, it would appear that all 4 Aussies were quite tall.
Being tall means you don't have to swim so far to get to the other end.
@@WiFiWombat Yes, but it also means it takes longer to get into the water from a standing start 😊
The fact they continually broke the world record is ICONIC !!!
Ended too soon, needed the full celebration and singing from the crowd!!
I love Ian Thorpe. And I always will.
Thorpies effort in giving the current world champion a start, & running him down,
is the best sporting effort I have ever seen, but it was a gr8 team effort.
Ian Thorpe is so freakin fast
Dont forget Bill Kirby AM who swam anchor and took them across in world record time. A great guy too.
This is so cool! Thank you for this I remember I saw this as it happened and I'm so proud of Australia.
Ian is an absolute mad lad
2000 was an amazing time to be a teenager in Sydney, the city sparkled and the games put us on the world map🌍🇦🇺
The torpedo started it then the boys just followed 👍👍👍
Missed the perfect opportunity to say thorpedo 😭🤌
@@emsewemsie8977 😂
Smashed them like guitars
Peter Van was incredible too in this race wow
Too bad the director chose to only focus on the lead swimmer. But yeah, I was looking for Peter in 2 down the stretch. Great finish!
Australia are low key the best swimmers
Americans
Hmmm....maybe back in the day but definitely not anymore.
Lol the US destroyed Australia overall in the pool at this Olympics and this was the best Australia ever was in the pool
The US pumps more money into their sports and has a lot more people (sends way more people to every olympics too)... Australia would do more with those resources
@@NetWarriorsFTW yeah Australia is freakishly successful for how small they are
Bro this music is awsome wish I was alive to see Ian Thorpe compete
WOW! This is the OLYMIC GAMES......just WOW! insane victory.
Yey! Go Australia! So proud of my home!
what i call the dream team of olympic relay races.
Nice to win the race and watch the other teams still going
I’m always a little sad when watching Thorpe swim. How much longer would his career had gone for if he didn’t have to deal constantly with the Australian media’s speculation over his sexuality?
That is Not True. What time do you live in ?
I don't think that was the case at all. From my memories of the time, most of us Australians couldn't have cared less whether Ian Thorpe was heterosexual, homosexual or a triple-headed purple alien, and I certainly don't remember it being a big deal in the media - most articles just focussed on his world-beating swimming records. From the interviews I've read with Mr. Thorpe, his struggles with depression began in his early teens, long before he was famous, and were exacerbated by the relentless grind of training and his own internal struggles over his sexuality. In fact the Australian public's reaction to his 'coming out' in 2014 was very positive, and the overall tone of public comment was "So? You're still our Thorpedo and always will be."
It was his own personal issues with depression and such that ended his career early. From what I remember no one could have cared less about who he fancied 😂🤣
It’s true the media were always questioning him, not straight out but with speculation and innuendo, they just wouldn’t leave him alone.
Saw it ilve, epic Klim making WR in first turn and Thorpe winning just at the end
Salute to Micheal Klim for the great opening
There probably won’t ever a swim as good as this
I met Bill kirby, we met him during a sports assembly his son goes my school..
Thorpe is like Federer in tennis - he is so graceful and makes it look easy.
Great race. Crazy to see how much the WR has gone down since.
..... why did I get more emotional at the end when PM John Howard threw his hands up 🥺
My goodnes Thorpy was magic to watch.
WHY IS THERE AN AD ON THIS VIDEO?????
My dad worked their when the Olympics were on.
Worked their what?
Georgia Muspratt same except my mum. She said that Half do Sydney worked lol
The best team ever
Ian Thorpe = Fish in human disguise
Quê dominância nos nados!! Thorpe 👊🏻
why are all the Olympic videos unavailable?
The other countries swimmers were pushed out of frame when it was zoomed 😂
Amazing 😻🇦🇺👍
Australian with the support of the Home team in Sydney they won a gold medal not just that they have set up the new world record.
oh dang thats one of my favourite songs
I love this.
Certainty inspired me to swim walking hard.
Btw...I voted from the heart .
Yeeeaaahh come on the Aussies!!
go australia
this is great but where is the commentary
When did this world record breaks???
At the first 100, the American thought he was still in with a chance...Thorpe - turns on legs.
The Australians train with Great Whites and crocs the size of a Greyhound Bus. It's an unfair advantage.
Not fair! Michael Klim is from the future!
Aussie Aussie Aussie
Ian Thorpe pulled a real life version of what David Hasselhoff did in The Spongebob Movie.
australia: this is our pool. You fool🇦🇺
Those days
10:53 Australian swimmers jump in pool again to celebrate their achievement.
Congrats to australia! but i just saw my coach swim in the olympics...
Klim!!!
So proud of you aussies
Wouldn't it be funny if one of the umpires slipped into the pool.
Ian's feet are like propellers
I know jakson Pearson because he goes to my school
Was the best!!!!
how come everyone did that type of start back then? Was it the only one permitted or did people no discover the other type of dive yet
FINA only added the fin to the block in 2010.
Looks in leg 1, the American swimmer trying to keep pace with Thorpe at 150 badly botched the flip-turn at 4:36 in the video. He lost at least a body length in that turn. Almost looks like one of my flip-turns 😬
Tight for second
German have two stefans and two cristions
20th anniversary today
woww....brilliant :)
No USA Comments on this...................they must be sore losers!

Yep swimming one of the worst sports

Billy Tragyu don't worry, you can keep playing Minecraft :)
why did m phelps not swim?
Because he was 15. He did swim. But not in this event.
yes he was 15 but why did he not swim in this? was he slow at 200m freestyle when he was 15?
+Yong Geun Song no he was number one in the world at age 15
Yong Geun Song no he was just 15
Yong Geun Song he only swam in the 200 fly at Sydney
terrible calling
I think the swim called its self :)
First
I think micheal phelps was deh usa woud hv won
@Paul Shackleton why you say say that dont you think so
@Paul Shackleton ok i get what you saying
Thorpe had raced Phelps at this Olympics and smashed him.
@@goodshipkaraboudjan true
@@kimaniefrancois2988 yep, did the same in 2004 in Athens when he beat Phelps twice again. It was a shame he retired because he still would have been quick in 2008.
They should have been disqualified.
Ah, yes, the dark ages before Michael Phelps
Where's the commentary??
Ian Thorpe's stroke is the smoothest I've ever seen. It looks like he's going slower than the others, but in reality he's speeding up. A beautiful technique.
bbh swim and baekhyun wOW I LOVE THIS
Yeah, what a technique ! 🏊♂️
Ditto
It was his strength. I read a story from a trainer who worked with Thorpe back in the day, and the difference was Thorpe's weights sessions. They were absolutely insane
Mr Thorpe was a class of his generation...
I’m not even Australian but I’m so glad for them. Thorpe has been my inspiration for years. Such a humble and talented human being and so the rest of the team!
You are very kind.
Thorpes stroke is a masterpiece to watch.
Ian is my favorite swimmer of all time!!! Still watching this in 2024! He has the smoothest swim ever, that extended arm is a beauty.
i thought i was the only one
Me too still watching 2024
I'll NEVER forget this race !!! Men's 4x200m freestyle relay final !!! I WAS THERE FOR ALL SWIMMING !!!!!!!! GO AUSSIE ~!!!
The aussie crowd
Must be so great for all the athletes to hear.
Sounds like the crowd is yelling "pull, kick!" to remind the swimmers what to do when. :)
Crowd is epic!
@@MarkEWallace they are chanting Thorpie for Ian Thorpe haha
After Thorpe finished and Klim jumped the USA first leg swimmer looked like he already gave up
