Most of the general NBA fans that have only paid attention to Boston's easy playoff run, don't realize that Boston has a huge matchup advantage against Mavs, especially with Porzingus back.
Including 95% of NBA media and analysts. They’re all ignoring the actual match ups and choosing the Mavs out of emotions and hatred for the Celtics.

@@greggibson33 Emotion aside.... Boston has the best duo in the series as both of their stars are elite on both sides of the ball. Boston has the better starting 5. Boston's 3rd, 4th, & 5th option are all better than the 3rd option on Dallas. Boston has beaten Dallas in the season series, both, last year and this year. If you want to look at just after the trade deadline they beat Dallas with Gafford & Washington on the roster. They beat Dallas in Dallas by 9. They beat Dallas in Boston by 28. Again, emotion aside, those are the facts.
Basketball is about match ups. I know a lot of people want the Mavs and Luka to win out of intense dislike for the Celtics. The fact remains however that the Celtics are built to beat a team exactly like the Mavs. Porzingis who can space the floor and make Lively and Gafford uncomfortable. 2 all NBA defensive guards who can shut down Kyrie. While nobody can actually STOP Luka. The Jays are big and great defenders themselves who can wear Luka down and make him less effective down the stretch. The Celtics are the only team in the league that can do this. With all due respect to Luka who is a mega star and Kyrie is also great. The Celtics are just a superior team with superior defense and I expect them to win in 6 games. The Mavs are a special team but the Celtics are a buzzsaw. No offense to any Mavs fans here.

@greggibson33 Yes, it can and has happened. Kyrie is 0-10 his last 10 games vs the Celtics. He is 100% capable of being shut down and limited by great defenders.
What about gafford and lively? If you can’t stop the lobs it’s over .

The only team that was deliberate in attacking luka were the clippers and it was successful enough to get luka tired and shoot inefficiently especially towards the end of games. Sadly, clippers were just to shorthanded especially on offense.

Every time I think about this series I just can’t stop thinking about that regular season game when Luca still had a triple double and Kyrie had 20+ points. Pretty much did the same exact thing they did against Minnesota. Still lost by 28 points though. Celtics are a nightmare matchup for Dallas. Just like Denver is a nightmare matchup for Boston. I got Celtics in five. Al Horford is hungrier than anyone for a trophy. Jays know what it takes. Yes so does Irving but so does holiday.
The starters was different, the rotation was different, lively was different and the defensive strategy was different. Definitely not saying Dallas will win but u definitely can't go off of that game
Why tf do people keep talking about a damn random March 1st game where Mavs didn’t even have their rotations together and were playing terrible around the time lol shit pacers beat them and Cleveland and a few other teams. They took off after they played Miami and didn’t look back. Defense got better and offense as well as the rotations of who will play with who. GAF and DJJ only played 7 minutes each that 1 regular season game. It’s the same team technically but really it’s not the same team cuz they are just better. Ik the team post deadline took a minute to gel and are totally different from the pre-deadline team, but it is kind of cheap to me for mavs fans / media to throw out all mavs “eh” play like it means nothing. Even with Luka’s fantom knee injury which was effecting him mightily for 1 series then miraculously healed the next. I’m not a doctor but idk of a knee injury that can be serious one week and gone the next. I get what ur saying. But idk I just don’t think u can hand wave away all of the mavs “eh” games over the last year.

The thing that is really alarming is that the Mavs went 0-4 combined vs the Celtics and Pacers and got blown out all four games. I recall those 2 losses vs the Pacers, they forced Luka to play defense and he was visibly gassed.

Mail bag: in a previous show you mentioned the potential the Bucks have to be a top tier contender next season, and refrenced Giannis and Dame as the key building blocks for that turn around. I think you failed to mention Khris Middleton, who in back to back post seasons (yes in two first round exists) has averaged at least 20/5/5 on efficient shooting. Against the Pacers he was arguably the best player on the court for multiple games, including his monster performance in game 3 hitting 2 absolutely bonkers 3 pointers. Just think he's been forgotten these past two months as a player a bunch of young wings (GG Jackson for example) say is a player the model their game after. Keep up the great work.

Hey Jason love the show and idk if you'll see this but I was wondering is there a chance that the mavericks run zone. Idk much about how it would change their ability to defend the Celtics, but as a Miami fan I know we run zone a lot and it often allows us to in a way throw off our opponents and I believe sometimes even make up for defensive liabilities. Would dallas (and I guess the Celtics too) have any reason to try and implement a zone for multiple possesions?
Uummm you do understand the weakness of a zone is that it allows 3pt shots? That's why Miami couldn't keep Kevin Love on the floor against the Celtics cause he sucks as a one on one defender and can only be on the floor if Miami plays zone which they couldn't do against the celtics cause they got torched from 3.
KP is 7'3 and Horford is a great passing big surrounded by shooters. The Mavs would get crushed.

All this based on every Celtics player shoot the 3s very well. In that case the Mavs screwed, but I think thats rarely the case. As soon as somebody has a shooting slump the Mavs will leave him open and dare to shoot and betting on Luka killing them on offense. They did this a lot during the end of the regular season and in playoffs too.
Isn’t Porzingis 3 points threat a little overrated? Dude is 37% and he’s been similar all his career. He’s also coming off a long injury. I remember his Mavs days, he wasn’t that sniper that people gave him credit for.

mailbag: The only thing that worries me is celtics offense execution in the clutch vs mavs. Watching the celtics, they have a tendency to not run an offense late in games and just hand the ball to Jt or Jb and let them iso which usually leads to a contested jumper. That compared to Luka and Kyrie in the cluch, along with another celtics tendency to take their foot off the gas whenever we are up in games worries me. Thoughts? Think they will improve late game offense?

When Boston has to rotate to their bench, they're going to get out played by the Mavs' bench. If KP isn't healthy, horford will be the switch the Mavs hunt for. Celtics pick and roll defense isn't up to snuff. They better pray they hit 33% or more of their 3pters

I think Celtics have more X-Factors that would give them avenues to win. If their bench ( Horford, Hauser, Pritchard) are hitting shots like they have all season i think that will tip the scales so much more into bostons favor because bostons bench has kinda been a non factor so far this playoffs.

Luka will get BBQ chickened again and again by Brown and Tatum in this series. If Kidd thinks he can hide Luka the way he hid him in Minnie, he is in for a nightmare surprise. There is a reason why Luka is on the highlight reel of several UA-cam videos when they played Boston, JB ate him alive on defense and broke his ankles by attacking him on the offensive side.

@@SirMan48 that’s revisionist history if I’ve ever read it… Carlisle literally drew up plays to isolate him at the perimeter against guards in the pick and roll and then in the post with action from Luka and KP was absolutely useless. That’s how he ended up relegated to the corner. He was a liability and him standing in the post effectively just brought an extra defender to anyone who tried to penetrate. That said, I wasn’t even referring all that much to actual play. I honestly wish the guy the best. Dallas fans don’t get as salty as you Bostonians when someone wants out. That said, the reason you should be concerned is the same reason you haven’t seen the guy since round 1. I won’t call the guy soft because I’m not there but I do know the guy can’t stay on the court and I’ve seen him make “comebacks” from injury in the playoffs before. Either way, I think this will be a great series and I’m looking forward to some great basketball. Good luck man

Mavs played a Kawhi-less Clippers. An inexperienced Thunder team they were favorited against and a matchup layup in Minnesota who had one of the worst offenses of a contender in the league. Celtics are an entirely different juggernaut.

@boblully5053 Odds of Porzingis hurting himself again with this much recovery time and rehab for maximum 7 games is relatively low, even for him. His odds are obviously higher than others that are more durable but his odds of being injured again are pretty low unless targeted by a Mavs player.

A 5 out team is the kind of team that poses the most threat to Dallas, true. In my opinion Boston is just a supersized version of OKC. The Mavs limited the Thunder to 33.5% from deep. Boston has been shooting 37% so far in the playoffs. That won’t be enough if the Mavs continue to own the paint on both ends like they have so far. Lively can close out to shooters. Gafford is the weakest link there, but now Kleber is back healthy after missing rounds 2-3. Kleber opens all of the Mavs’ lineups, big and small. They all defend well.

If I was a Celtic fan I would be most worried about the pick and roll defense and points allowed in the paint. Those are two keys to Dallas’ success and Boston has not excelled in those areas so far this postseason, even against much weaker opponents…..

If Porzingis isn’t 100% mentally and physically ready Luka will dog him out. He’ll be deadweight by game 3.
