I think we all get too caught up in the naming. The 6800xt wasn't a bad card to get for 500$ a month ago, so rhe 7800xt shouldn't be a bad card to get for the same price now. I do think if they just called it a 7800 it would get higher praises

    • @Lionheartx675

It was AMD's choice to make this the successor card to the 6800 XT by naming it as such. That why they can up the price. This is really a 7700 XT in disguise and apologists will let AMD slide once again by saying things like "don't get caught up in the naming." You absolutely SHOULD get caught up in the naming if the intent is anti-consumer behavior.

There are names and tiers for a reason. Can I call my Camaro a Corvette and sell it for twice the price? What you go by is what should the next gen card be that beats a 6800XT. That would be a 7700 non XT. And what did a 6700 non XT go for last gen? $299? So a card that beats a 6800XT this gen should be $350 or less. Remember that current 7 series cards from both AMD and Nvidia should always beat the 8 series ti and xt variants of last gen. So a 7800XT that only matches the 6800XT is a failure at any price over $350. Nvidia and AMD are pulling the wool over your eyes and you are accepting it.

Paul, I understand it's tempting to hate on AMD for their recent snafus and run with Nvidia behavior in the duopoly. But within the scope of the product they just launched, the 7800XT is ~48% faster than a 6700XT according to Tech Powerup, with faster RT and AV1 encode, while costing $499 MSRP vs the $479 that the 6700XT launched at.
This kind of performance gain might be a bit too much to relegate to a 7700XT, given the recent generation uplift laterally of ~30% on average. So the naming is either 7700XTX or 7800 IMO. For marketing purposes they decided to call it a 7800XT so that it would sell.
Given market conditions, I would have given AMD a pass and just say they did a good in the right direction with this release

Everything goes back to cryptomining. One mistake in the past cascades into the future and keeps building. It's like once you tell a lie, you have to keep up the lie and even build the lie up more and more. Nvidia and AMD didn't want to lower prices after the cryptomining boom went bust so they had to price the next generation cards higher than the previous generation in order to have a hope of selling the previous generation. Both of them are still keeping up the lie. This generation of RTX4000 and RX7000 are an instant skip. It won't get better with next generation either.

I totally agree about the naming.
Unfortunately, the lower end and lower-mid range cards are not offering as much value as before, so AMD and Nvidia are pushing us more toward upper mid-range cards after we've had three years of unusually high inflation. The previous gen 6700 XT (and its 6750 XT variant) is now a good value lower-mid-range or upper-low-end card, but it hasn't actually been available at a great price in all regions, and supply will probably mostly run out in less than a year, and the other good value lower-end previous gen cards are likely to run out of stock too, which could leave consumers with very few good value options below the 7800 XT.
If you adjust for inflation, 480 USD in early 2021 (when the 6700 XT launched), is equivalent to about 540 USD. That 480 USD price was most likely higher than it was originally planned to be, and was probably originally planned to be around 450 or even lower. 500 USD today is about 440 USD in early 2021.
The 7800 XT is about 43% faster than the 6700 XT, and probably costs around the same as what the 6700 XT was originally planned to launch at, IF you adjust for inflation.
500 USD today is equivalent to about 420 USD in 2019, when the 5700 XT launched at 400, and the 5700 XT was universally regarded as a great value at that price. The 7800 XT is around 90% faster, with double the Vram, and a bunch of other improvements.
It's normal for previous gen cards to get heavily discounted before some of the new generation cards even released, and for them to offer similar or even better value per dollar than the new ones. That doesn't make the new cards a bad deal. If you want to assess whether a new gen card is offering an improvement in value over the previous gen, you have to compare launch pricing with launch pricing.

    7900 XT GRE=7800 XT at $599.99

    7700 XT=7700 XT at $399
    7700 at $329
    7600 at $249.99,
AMD is right to compare the 7800 XT to the 6800...they have the exact same ROPS, TMUs, etc, which at $500 would be a $70 price decrease over the RX 6800. 20% more performance over the RX 6800 at 15% less money. What is interesting about the 7700 XT is that it has 54 Cus...AMD should have made a 52 CU RDNA2 card(which is the Xbox GPU) because there was a huge gap between the RX 6800(Which had 60 CUs) and the RX 6700 which had 40 CUs. Instead of only faster memory the 6750 XT should have had 52 CUs along with the faster memory.

    7700 12gb $429

I am not interested on the 7800 XT / 7700 XT nor the 7900 XT, and since I am the friend who does the IT for my friends and help them with hardware stuff as well. I have not recommended anything on this new gen TBH. I have only mentioned the 6700 xt, 6800 xt, even the 6950xt, rtx 3070 ti, 3080.
Honestly IMHO the only worth the time GPUs this gen is the 7900xtx and maybe the 4090 if found on a sale lol. I still cannot find a reason to spend so much on a GPU, even though it is a beast lol.
I bought a 7900 xtx for $800 new on a sale, for the 800 is pretty good TBH, (I still have my 3070 TI and works fantastic as well)

Tbh, it doesn't matter which GPU I decide to get because I'm building a new PC at the end of the year with a 7800X3D, so even a 4090 will have a GPU bottleneck lol 😲😂

AMD is just following Nvidia, even with the "playing with names" game. Nvidia is been incrementally lowering the tiers, generation by generation. The x80 used to be top tier, like the 280/480/580. Then 680/780/980 were already heavily cut down. X80 became x80 ti (homage to old tis from back in the day) , and also titan, and x90 and x90 ti, soon there will be x90 Titan Ti Super GX2. They all played this game to some extent, to better "fit" yields, but Nvidia took it to another level and now AMD seems to be following Nvidia to a tee.

You are right the naming is wrong, if you compare Navi 22 vs. Navi 32, you could do it also like RX 6750 XT vs. 7800 XT, so the RX 7800 XT has a lower MSRP, more performance and more Vram.
It comes with a game bundle, so if the game bundle falls away they will need to lower the price to around 449 $. Driver updates will slightly improve the performance over time, maybe ?! and AMD will add some other stuff in the not so distant future. For workloads 16gb is enough to get something done, how Rocm will play out we will see. But over all it is not a bad deal at the moment.
They are litterly sold out and some shops did increase the pricing because they run out of stock. Despite everything what AMD and Nvidia is doing and you are not wrong at all, but AMD is like " I´ll make you an offer you can´t refuse." at the moment, If AMD lowers the price, maybe later on, it will shine.

@@VoldoronGaming Yes, but the wafers are the same size.. GPU chips typically stay the same size, generation to generation, *because they are in the same price range.*
The tech does advance, transistor counts increase drastically, but the wafer cost is relatively the same for the newest tech. When 16nm was new, it was the expensive wafers. When 7nm was new, it was the expensive wafers. The prices don't increase exponentially, only very, very slightly, if at all.

You where not wrong about the RX 7800 xt. It is a stupid name and $500 is disgusting. Just because everything around it is worse dose not make it right. If it was possible to get the card without the joke Bethesda game we might get it for what? $479 or $469? O right it is basically barely worth $40. My bad forgetting that the game bundle is maybe costing AMD at most $15.
We got reports that the Navi32 silicon was made around the late end of 2022. We are in September now before the cards release. You where able to get a RX 7800xt for the same dam price for over half a year. AMD is just holding supply and product to clear old stock to then sell the RDOA cards. And we see basically nothing. No performance gains no nothing. AMD failed to make the performance they expected out of RDNA 3 and refuse to name the cards what they are. Or price them in a way or even launch the cards before securing the RDNA2 being sold out. The only thing going right for AMD is outside of AMD's company. And that is NVIDIA.
It the stupid bundles go away and Navi 32 truly starts to get a decent price this holiday season. I might bite. Or else it might be about time to just sit it out until Q1 and watch NVIDIA add $15 worth of Vram to there cards and make the bus with a tiny bit bigger on a refresh and just blow AMD cards out of the water. Or pray for Intel to do something...
Right now my hobby money is gone into far better things then this stupid game liver service BS. Or graphic cards with 60% profit margins that people are okay with. And fake frames nonsense wars.

This means you got the 7800XT (and the rest of the 7000 series) has the LAG problem with slows it's performance against last generations GPU's
