- The stick, it's so IRRITATING!! This is one bizarre (and incredibly aggravating) maze dexterity challenge game by Saurus and Jaleco for the PlayStation in 1998.

Non-sucky gameplay footage from "ScHlAuChi" on longplays.org
"I can barely get through it at all, which is why I'm showing footage of someone else playing"
That's pretty hilarious all in it's own
I have the Japanese N64-version of this game as well as the one reviewed here, and I found that it's a bit more comfortable to control due to the N64's analogue stick.
If you have any friends left after Mario Party, this is another great way to get rid off them on the N64.
I'm rather disappointed. I was hoping this was an open world game where you run around hitting people with a stick! lol
Your channel is great! I've been enjoying many of your videos over the past couple weeks. I came across this one and was surprised to see myself in it. :P I'm the one with the Irritiating Maze arcade cabinet that you used a quick clip of in the middle of this video.
I made that video shortly after getting that machine and hadn't fixed it all up yet. Since then, I have fixed the flashing marquee lights, the 10 flashing lights below the marquee, the flashing lights on either side of the monitor, the strobe lights on either side of the monitor, the flashing light in the trackball, and the air blaster that hits you when you fail (I think that was already working in this video). All of those "features" make the game even more...irritating.
Chain reactions, baby!!! About six years ago I'm on UA-cam looking for Seanbaby videos and happen across AVGN who I instantly start to ove, then recently I watch him review the shitty cover art for this game. Out of curiousity, I search for this game and end up here, and I liked this review so much I am now subscribed!!! I figured I better share this story because it is a gripping, riviting tale of stuff.
Captivating, truly :P
Thanks though, I hope you continue to enjoy the vids!
If I'd know you would actually see this I can would have put a bit more thought into it! Haha Thanks for the sweet videos man, they will making for great binge watching!
+Lazy Game Reviews AVGN brought me here, +1sub
This reminds me of an old GBA launch game in Japan called Kuru Kuru Kururin where you're also navigating an object through a maze with electrified walls, but unlike Irritating Stick, it's a rotating bar instead of a dot. That makes it so you have to move through obstacles in sync with the bar's rotation, switch its rotation occasionally, and overall it just looked like a lot of fun.
I was annoyed it never got a North American release.
I guess it kinda has a NA release now, because it's at least on Nintendo Switch Online
Really an interesting game of it's own
Your voice is just so pleasing to listen to and your review is just hilarious. Consider me subbed.
I appreciate it :)
+killerms2221 I was just thinking the same thing!
@@LGR are you a voice actor?
Definitely the best game name ever.
James brought me here but I love your Sims reviews anyway
Gets on your nerves constantly and rewards you with more frustration once you're successful... When did we start talking about college?
College? wait for AFTER college my friend
This is a game that deserves a remake. What I especially love is how enthusiastic the announcer is. Imagine booting up CoD and hearing "*WELCOME TO *BLACK OPS 3!*" with some awesome music in the background. How pumped would you get? This is a game that would be amazing if it was remade.
ScarabHunter It should get a remake.
I've got a US copy of this game, but there's no analogue comparability with mine. Have you got a later version or something?
But it's the sort of game that would work on the Wii more, or the PS3 with that motion glowy ball thing.
that would make it much more Irritating
preston glover Stick...
Give it to Ashens,Tell him to play it.
PURE EVIL
Tell Ashens to make a gameplay video too.
Give it to ashens. I want him to swear the video to fucking hell.
If your stick is irritated, please go see a doctor immediately
Only if it's a female....
@@furbymaster4239 man u cheatin
i loved having the japanese version of the game as a kid because i thought it was hilarious to have somebody screaming at me in another language when i irritated the stick.
LGR does what AVGN dont. Showing gameplay.
+ZockAmigos
AVGN does what LGR don't: make fun of the awful cover and title.
Thanks for the review.
After checking today's episode of AVGN about "Bad Cover Art", curiosity got the best of me.
UA-cam tagged this video as "No Mature Content" and at first I thought that was pretty mean and funny but then I watched this video and a few more and a few more and now I'm really glad I found you :) Not enough retro game reviewers so chilled, wholesome and calming to watch.
Your commentary is incredible. You made my day!
Great obscure review LGR. I actually played this game back in the day on a Playstation Underground demo disc, under the Imports tab. Unlike the other US demos the console had to be restarted after playing the import titles. Sure enough it was this game with 0 translation and no title... So, thank you for putting a name to this maniacal game for me!
This game irritates my stick.
*HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA*
there should be a vr game for this kind of genre....
1:19 "Welcome to.. IRRITATING STICK!!" Just.. amazing. I need to make a ringtone of that!
Irritating Stickiness?
Yeah, I'm not even going to touch that... o_o
AVGN sent me here, which is awesome, because I love LGR :-D
still has more content then battlefront(2015)
I just stumbled upon this review and I LOVE it! I love the concept of your reviews, you are hilarious! OMG, and the soothing voice and stuff. SUBSCRIBED!
Shocking Stick would have been too difficult, hmm?
+bloodrunsclear
English is a very rigid language to learn, with a very multiplex grammar and lubricious pronunciation. And learning adjectives is very hostile process.
bloodrunsclear Yup.
God looking on as I teeter on the edge of going insane from playing this game: "Watch out! You're too close to the edge!"
At 4:50 I was immediately aware of what you were talking about. It's the same reason the Japanese have had me playing Dark Souls, and nothing else, for most of the past year. No matter how many times I beat the game it still feels like its mocking me!
I love your videos. You make every game sound relaxing, no matter how IRRITATING they are.
Not surprised that Cho Aniki made it into your trio of video links at the end this time. ;)
Vs mode has drinking game written all over it!
I played the demo for this as a kid on one of those PS Underground discs I ended up with.
Haha same. With a limited library you pretty well play through everything on the disc. I remember that version being Japanese though and really confusing.
you can come over and play with my irritating stick, is nothing i will ever say to a friend...
LGR: reviewing random ass games like a damn boss. Can't for Sims 4, those are always the best ones
Here come the AVGN fans
+StarwindAmada1 LMFAO!! it's so true!
i've been long time fan of both these guys for years though:)
+StarwindAmada1 whoooop whooooop
You got it. 😉
Yes hahah That's the video that introduced me to LGR sometime ago and nowadays I don't lose a single video
I love these ps1 reviews.
I remember being the craze during the 90s era, there were cheap clones of it outside of it on TV
4:47 That move you pulled off was impressive!
that would make good DS shovelware because of its touch screen and stylus
This game brings back memories. I remember buying it when my family visiting one of those big places with a bunch of market stalls in Vegas. And I don't think it was a flea market, but something else. Can't remember. But I remember my father being amused by the title, and my sister and I thinking it looked funny, so we bought it. As a child, it feels like it took me forever to get past that first level with the slot machine.
I remember seeing that game show from my childhood! I dono if I also played it in the community center as a kid in Hong Kong. Hmmmm...
Hi LGR im a big fan of Poe and i saw you have a copy of the dark eye, can you review it? and tell me if there is a way to get it in internet i search all over internet and i didn't find it.
Thanks
This came on a PlayStation JamPack in 1998, before the local release, and it was much less annoying in Japanese.
Best name for a game ever. Reminds me of a persistent case of jock rash...the kind that you hold off scratching, because when you do...oh man.
Such a bizarre title, I had to check out the review. Well done Larger
Has anyone told you that your voice is the hybrid of Bruce Campbell's and Duke Nukem's voice, good sir? you have just earned a subscriber
I wish there was a version of this for the Wii.
oh my god its kuru kuru kururin omg you have made my life by adding new levels to play (i hope)
Great Video!! What is the track in the beginnning?:))
I remember this game came on a Sony Underground Demo Disc I was given for PS1. It was in the "Imports" section along with Guilty Gear before both either of the games were out in North America. I can indeed confirm the Japanese announcer was constantly yelling stuff at you, but I found it awesome. I only recently found out the game got released for North America, which is surprising considering how niche this game is being based of a game show. Pretty fun game I'd say, but sticking to easy is the only way to keep your sanity. Try also not knowing any Japanese and having no idea what any of the text said, making me have to deduce where the difficulty setting even was. Still, fond if not frustrating memories.
5:39 "friends who wanna play with your irritating stick" ... that made my day!
This game would probaby fun and intersting to play on The Wii.
I remember seeing gameplay of this on youtube years ago. What happens you touch the walls gave me nightmares fro almost a day.
Hell, this game even got an arcade machine on Neo-Geo, if I remember correctly.
It reminds me a LOT about Kurukurukururin for the GBA. Very addictive game concept
Theres something about your reviews on classic games man, im a HUGE fan, if you want anything game related made out of glass hit me up!!! Love your channel!
Last time I played this "wire loop" game was on the internet where if you fail, Linda Blair from Exorcist will scream at you loudly.
Me: "oh wow he's actually doing pretty well now"
LGR: "And that is why I'm now showing footage of someone else playing the game"
Me: "oh"
And also: "If you want something to murder you until you're dead, keep an eye out for Irritating Stick" this is why i love you LGR xD
Woah, amazing quality of video from ps1. Are you using emulator for this, or what?
I was using the PS3's backwards compatibility mode for PS1 games, captured via HDMI.
+Lazy Game Reviews I'm assuming that might be the source of the input lag you mentioned, may or may not be there on PS1 + CRT
You should really look into the PS1 game "Disruptor," my dad and I used to love playing that one.
+1 for having Phntasmagoria. That game, if you can call it that, was so messed up. For that time.
I love the amount of despair in this review
This is a very well done review.
I see what you did there.
LOL. ePSX emulator, Microsoft Visual Studio, and about 1 and 1/2 hours. I got my bot script all done. It really is an entertaining game to watch, but you're right. I feel sorry for whoever has to play this.
"... or just want something to murder you until you are dead." - LGR, 2013.
I didn't know this came out in the US. I had the demo for this
LGR recommends: Analog Stick
Caddicarus recommends: D-Pad
Me: *_hmmmm_*
LGR, do you have "night of the tentacle" in your collection? I miss its kick-ass soundtrack.
Oh wow, I remember playing this on a demo disk (jampack?) way back when.
I'm studying Japanese now at a university (2nd year), and the translation should be something like this: *Ucchan Nanchan's Intense Challenge(r): This is 1 million yen if possible to do* so maybe they are referring to the possibility to win 1 million yen to clear the game as if there were a game show prize or something like that... I'm only in my 2nd year studying Japanese =P oh well thanks for another great video (^_^) still enjoying them =P (although it can mean blaze or flame (intense emotion e.g. love jealousy or anger... and also passion) So it can as easily be: *Ucchan Nanchan's blazing Challenge(r): This is 1 million yen if possible to do* The irritating (irritation/inflammation) use of the Kanji 炎 is spelled 炎症 or えんしょう (enshou) instead of as blaze/flame being spelled ほのお or 炎 (honoo).
According to wikipedia you are right.
Wow, how did I miss this one? This had to be really low print.
BTW LGR when are you going to do another abandoned places video, huh, huh?? I know you want to! :P
The first time I saw this was around 20 years ago in a german gameshow... ^^"
Please, please, please, review No One Lives Forever! I'd love to hear your review about such an awesome game :)
Seems even more frustrating then kororinpa on the Wii (and probably as adicting.) BTW LGR If you haven't played Kororinpa or it's sequel I highly recommend it. (It's a game about getting a marble to an exit in a big maze and various kinds of obstacles, however you control the angle of the world with the Wii remote instead of the marble directly.)
I remember flipping out with this game. Btw I laughed hard on this review, thanks!
I liked the game similar to this on Neo Geo
I have a Demo with this game in it and it's all in Japanese. I had no idea what was going on or WHAT THE HELL I WAS DOING. But it's fun and it's now memories for me too look back at.
Don't forget the Neo Geo game that came out before the PS1 and N64: Irritating MAZE
I knew this game a lot better as Ira-Ira Bo. The demo was on a Jampack Disc.
I need an irritating stick for my office.
Oh lawd... I remember this game - it was on a demo disc I had lol. It was... strangely addictive... I was addicted to an irritating stick... I...can't.
I played this with D-Pad
'Play with your irritating stick'... aw god I'm cracking up XDDD
You compared this to the game Operation in the beginning. Here's what I don't get;
If you were playing the physical game operation, and if you're right-handed, you would be using your right hand to hold the tweezers, since it's your most coordinated hand. Yet when you play this game, you're forced to use your left hand.
How does that make any sense?
***** No, it's worse.
***** Try this: Swap hands for an entire week. If you're right handed, start using your left hand for everything. Use the mouse left-handed. Write with your left hand. Cut your food with your left hand, etc. If you're left-handed, use your right hand for everything. No cheating.
When the week is over, come back here and tell me if you still think forcing right-handed players to use their left hand for controlling video games makes sense.
***** I'm right-handed. Of my two thumbs, my right one is naturally more coordinated than my left. If I load a game into a PSX emulator which lets you redefine the controls, I do significantly better using the right thumbstick for directional control than with the left. Of course this option isn't available on the real consoles (most of the time) since they all default to using the left pad/stick for the directions.
Thumbsticks, by their very design have a very short "throw', which means that you have to make very tiny, precise movements. Which means that you need good motor skills. In a right-handed person, the right hand has much better motor skills than the left.
It is entirely natural for a right-handed person to prefer using their right hand for directional control. Still don't believe me? Take any right-handed gamer and put them in front of a Space Harrier arcade machine where the fire button is mounted on the joystick. Nine out of ten people will hold the stick with their right hand. Put them in front of an Arkanoid machine and they will turn the knob with their right hand. Give a right-handed player an Atari Quickshot joystick and they will automatically pick it up with their right hand. Give them an Atari Trackball, which has buttons on both sides and they will roll the ball with their right hand.
In any situation where the controls can be used equally well by either hand, the majority of right-handed players will instinctively use their right hand.
***** Maybe, but why should you have to? I mean, what is the logic behind forcing the majority of players to use their non-dominant hand? I've heard the argument that being able to quickly press the buttons is more important than making precise movements, but then what's the rationale for playing a game like Pac-Man, which doesn't use buttons at all, left-handed? Your right hand is doing nothing other than holding the controller.
Here's what I find really odd though: the majority of people are right-handed. The majority of game controllers use the left pad/stick for controlling movement. Even expensive arcade style controllers have the stick on the left. Which means that the majority of gamers are controlling games with their non-dominant hand. Yet when a left-handed person finds an Atari joystick awkward to use with their right hand, nobody tells them that it's better that way.
If it's natural for a right-handed player to use their left hand to control a game, shouldn't be be natural for a left-handed person to use their right hand?
lurkerrekrul You bring up a very interesting point. Most likely we'll never know for sure, but I'm left handed and generally pretty good at gaming. But I'm not a stand out amongst right handed gamers on the control pad. I think there are far greater factors at work here. I don't deny that there has to be some difference to begin with (i.e. it is one minor factor at least), but especially for kids who spent decades playing with the conventional gaming pad I think the nurture wins for such gamers. I'm sure there are other contradicting examples, so perhaps it's not so black & white.
This is funny, but thanks to AVGN you'll get a lot of attention now lol
Your video is great btw, now it's time to see more :)
I love this video because that's the one that introduced me to LGR!
Clint's choice of words are hilarious...
I have the Japanese version of this on my nintendo 64. (Ok, I actually have a flash cart). That being said, My roomate and I used this game to solve arguments. The 2 player is fun as hell.
Oh, I had this on a demo disc back in the day but it was in Japanese. I remember it being fun yet frustrating.
I love Irritating Stick! It's one of my top 50 PSX faves!
Yes, you do have to 'Git Gud' with the controls (anyone who would use the D-Pad for this game is an absolute dumbshit).
You failed to mention the versus mode quip - If you are closer to the finish, and your opponent catches up and touches the relative location where you are at, you lose a life. However, your opponent continues on like nothing happened. Yes, that was prgrammed intentionally too.
My favorite Vs Mode Irritant? Inertia. I love it when someone tries to show off and then whammo! They can't stop moving! It's too perfect.
this game looks huge in point of gameplay! wow!
Irritating/frustrating is the correct translation of "Ira-ira," the original word. It's not meant to describe the stick in question, but the emotion you feel after failing the same course for the 99th time.
The announcer kinda sounds like luigi from the super Mario bros super show when he said "watch out! You're to close to the edge!"
Who played the game for you so you could get the footage?
Looks like the type of game I would have played with my friend in high school if either of us had it. Instead we played the PS1 version of Frogger.
Love playing this with my track ball on my arcade machine
announcer in the game sounds exactly like the one in Waverace 64 :D
It reminds me of Kuru Kuru Kururin on the Game Boy Advance. Similar concept, but much more player friendly. And addictive as hell.
I can't tell which is more suggestive, that robot lady or the bride of Pin*Bot from the Williams table of the same name!
I just noticed the DNF hat that was signed by John St. John.
HOW DID YOU GET THAT
