Before pulling Caliburn out of the pedestal, Merlina asks Sonic if he's ready to be the "worst of all knights, slayer of kings," in which Sonic responds with, "Guess I can't be the hero every time!" and pulls the sword out. This actually comes back in the endgame later, too, which I'll also mention. When Sonic is first challenged by Sir Lancelot, Lancelot asks if Sonic will drop his weapon and flee, which Sonic responds with "Sounds good to me!" But by the time he's challenged by Sir Percival, Sonic refuses to flee. When Sonic is challenged by Sir Gwain and defeats him, Sonic stops Gwain from committing...well, an honorable death on himself, and tells him that there's more to being a knight than serving a king, which rings true. Sonic goes even further by saying that he has "People to save, y'know?" and Sir Gwain stares at him. When Sonic comes across the crying child (which we learn was actually The Lady Of The Lake in disguise), he chooses to go and slay the Dragon despite the Lady Of The Lake's tasks not being completed and Caliburn warning Sonic that he'll never make it in time. Yes, choosing to go slay the Dragon was a form of compassion, but still. Sonic responds to this with "Maybe, but I go my own way!" In the confrontation with the Dark Queen, Sonic wants to learn why she betrayed him and why she wants to make an eternal world. Sonic outright asks "Why?" In the same scene, Sonic has some really good lines. When Sir Percival says that he's done enough after Caliburn breaks, Sonic says "A knight never flees his foe, right?" And when Sir Gwain says that this isn't about chivalry anymore, Sonic says "It was never about chivalry for me. I just gotta do what I gotta do, that's all." During the final battle, Dark Queen says to Sonic and asks him, *"Your selfishness is going to be the end of it all. Do you not understand?"* to which Sonic responds with what may be the best line ever from him and the most surprising one to me, looking back at this game, and says, *"I already told you! I don't mind playing the bad guy every once in a while!"* A nice callback to the beginning of the game, and foreshadowing, too. The two scenes compliment each other. This game is so underrated, story wise and character wise with Sonic. Sonic's character peaked in this game.
Here's some more food for thought for you. There's two versions of "With Me" this one and the Crush 40 one. You can interpret this version as Merlina singing this song to Sonic while the Crush 40 version is Sonic singing it to Merlina.
For real and I think Jason Griffin best voice acting for Sonic was this game made me want to see more his voice acting as Sonic. I still prefer the adventure era voice actors and actresses I love Ryan Drummond portrayal as Sonic. But Jason Griffin was pretty damn good in this game and the music gets me hyped everytime.
I don't care what anyone says: The entire game was worth it JUST to see Sonic turn into Excalibur Sonic, with it not just being a title as he is *actually wielding the legendary sword itself.* "There's NOTHING Excalibur can't cut through!"

If I could have one thing back from my childhood. My Wii, and this game. I replayed the dark queen boss over and over and over. The fight was so epic and glorious. Granted super forms were a standard by then, but just seeing sonic donne that golden knight armor, Calibur becoming Excalibur. Everything was so epic. Down to the core.
