I feel like this is the most dramatic Sonic final boss theme ever! Where you had the kickass Live and Learn, the awesome What I’m made of, and even the orchestral version of His World, these lyrics feel more personal for Sonic and Merlina. It helps that the message is a bitter pill to swallow. And the octave is more serious compared to other final boss songs.
Same, and this song definitely emphasizes Sonic's views which isn't explored too much, it is in A2 and 06, but this was full in dive into what he truly believes. I also like to think that the song is a conversation between the 2, because a lot of the things said feel like something Sonic would also say. That they have similar thoughts on, but the few things don't, is what leads to their difference in ideals. especially 1 specifically, "my eyes are filled with curiosity, you think you have power over me" sounds more like Sonic talking to her. Nothing has power over him, he lives by his own rules, his own freedom, and fights so that others' freedoms aren't taken away. Even if his ideology clashes with someone innately evil like her, or Shadow in SA2, or even someone innately good and pure hearted like Knuckles, or Silver in 06, he'll still do what he's gotta do, whether people see him as a hero or a villain.
What I've always loved about Sonic, his views. He's not inherently a hero, people just view him like that, if his ideals ever crossed with anyone else, he'd fight for what he believes in, and that's everyone's right to freedom. Look at Silver, who was inherently good, a complete opposite to Shadow when Shadow joined the franchise, the complete good, and complete evil, and yet Sonic got Shadow to not view things as black and white, well ok Amy did a lot of the work, but not all people are bad, there is some good in the bad. Silver the exact opposite, chaotic evil, and Silver lawful good, the needs of the many out weigh the few, 1 hedgehog vs the world... now he too is one of Sonic's friends, because not everything is inherently white and black. Sonic isn't good, he isn't evil, he just does what's fun and fight's to protect for what he feels is right. I know this song is from her perspective, but I feel a lot of the lyrics feel fitting to him too, as if they're having a back and forth, especially... huh neat the most replayed part, "my eyes are filled with curiosity, you think you have the power over me, in this life there's no room for you and me" (not that he thinks that about her, but her drive and morals) "so turn away and face the day with me" as if he's reaching his hand out for her to taste the sun, escape the darkness... and yes ok the "away and face" was me mishearing... but still feel it's fitting. The ultimate clash of morals, and say what you want about the game, bad or not... this was one of the biggest developments and establishments of Sonic's feelings. He's had a lot of moments throughout the franchise, SA1 and 2 especially, but this hit the most. Sonic isn't a hero, he's not good, he's not evil, he's neutral and just does what feels right. Sometimes some may view him as a hero, others a villain, but that won't stop the wind from moving, the river from flowing, he's gotta do what he's gotta do.
Obvlously you've never played SONIC HEROES. So he not only sees himself as a hero but he's called himself one too and it wasn't an ego thing because he had saved the world several times with help from Tails and Knuckles.
@@trickq5883 Are you kidding, Sonic Heroes is my favorite 3d Sonic game, I've completed it at least 3 times, all As. Though fair point. However I don't put much stock in Heroes, it was just them making a typical game that has little to no relevance and stock... well for the most part, the biggest thing to come from it was Shadow not being dead. I mean I honestly wouldn't see Sonic saying "we're Sonic Heroes" in a serious tone, of which he says after the final battle, and you'd think Knuckles would sit by and accept that too? lol. He's also on team hero in SA2 Battle, it's not team Sonic it's team hero. He does good things, obviously he does heroic things, and saves people. Despite my love of Sonic Heroes it is just a fun extra little blip in the whole franchise. This is even explored in 06, what would happen when Sonic seen as a hero is faced against someone with pure and good intent? Who is arguably more of a hero in idealism? That's what Silver represented. The lawful good nature of the sacrifice of 1, to save the many, of which sure he's faced that ideology before, I'd say Knuckles can fit that bill too, but Knuckles has never been an obstacle of the world vs him or sacrificing Sonic vs the world. Just his island, his home, and the master emerald he was sworn to protect. Silver meanwhile it is fate of literally everything, even if he was being puppeted along by Mephiles, he still believed what he was doing was innately good. Meanwhile Shadow who was innately evil upon introduction, pure chaos and darkness, has since come to be a hero in his own right. From his journey with his amnesia in Heroes, to Shadow regaining his memories, and his story in 06, he's still an anti hero, but has the same philosophy of Sonic now that he will do what he must, even if he is pegged as a villain, he will follow what he truly believes. In fact in 06, it was this very reason that pushed Silver to look at the world as not being black and white, because of Shadow. People may look at him as a hero, he may throw comments around about being a hero, but in the end what he truly believes is just that people deserve a right to choice, freedom, and deciding their own fate. Heck nothing wrong with calling him a hero, look at King Arthur. That's why Sonic becomes him in this game, Arthur likewise didn't see himself as a hero, but greatness was thrust upon him, because he just wanted to do what was right. That was why the sword in the stone saw him as worthy, not because he had the blood of a king, but because he didn't believe himself worthy, but still wanted to do what's right in spite of it. Thus he became one of history/legend/mythologies greatest heroes, the all mighty ultimate white knight figure, no hero is more famous aside from possibly Heracles/Hercules. That Arthur, before he pulls the stone... is the exact mind set of Sonic. Thus by not being a hero, they become the greatest and most worthy of the title, of hero. Also what Superman used to be about before people started grouping him with other heroes like Batman and Wonder Woman, being in the Justice League, getting super powers, then quite literally becoming a Jesus metaphor. So if you see Sonic as a hero, that's fine, and as a kid, rather than Iron Man, Superman, Captain America, Spider Man, etc I did say Sonic was my favorite hero... to which I was laughed at because why would an animal be a hero? Because he was a good guy. Just as an adult... I appreciate him on a much deeper level, and see what he truly represents and means. A2B, 06, and Black Knight were the most deep and developed Sega has ever been with Sonic's character. Not that I'm calling you a kid either, I mean no offense lol, just stating that was my mindset when I was a kid. Apologies this is so long, but it is a deep analysis, there is a lot to Sonic's character, and even Shadow and Silver than people give Sega credit for.
I mean sonic wasn't a bad guy there because I believe that every world should have it's end too, I mean I'm not just saying in the games but in real life as well, god created the world and gave it a day where it will end and we can never change that, the world has it's end because god created this world just to test each human if he's good or bad, then the world will end and the evil will be in hell and the good will be in paradise so sonic is actaully right.
God, I wish the Storybook Series hadn't died so quickly. The games' stories and character development were so great, but they were held back by sub-par controls and only being on one console which was marketed for a completely different demographic than the games. I feel like if they had put Secret Rings and Black Knight on other consoles, they would've done so much better. Also, fun fact: The team for Sonic 06 was split in half, with one half continuing Sonic 06 and the other making Secret Rings, at least partially explaining why neither were that great and why Sonic 06 didn't come to Nintendo consoles.
One thing I don't really like is how sonic moves like a car? The attacking is fine enough because it would make sense to use motion controls to move the sword but in here it feels quite off. Motion controls is not bad the way the game uses motion controls is the thing that's bad.
For anyone non Spanish: Personally, despite the fact that people don't like some of the most recent Sonic games, and that before, Sega had the rivalry with Nintendo (which Sega had to unfortunately withdraw from the console market due to bad decisions), I am 100% sure that Sega beats Nintendo in something and continues to do it, the soundtracks mainly, Sega has done an incredible job with its themes that make them so epic that you don't care if the game is good or bad and you just want to listen to the music that the accompanies, no matter if it is a stage or a boss, it always gives you satisfaction, epicness and life when listening to the song and playing. IT IS MY OPINION
tremendous game, its soundtrack is epic, its story is great, the gameplay with the wii mote was somewhat weak but the truth is that you end up getting used to it and it no longer makes you annoying and you enjoy more
If u imagine this game was without sonic characters, I would believe this game would've been liked more. Its a real good game with and amazing soundtrack, but people bash on it since it had sonic as the main character.
Even then, while you may think Sonic with a Sword is a dumb idea... of all weapons it suits him. Especially with his wind thematic he often has. 'Knight of the Wind' after all. He also notably dosen't have armour except in the final battle. Maximum mobility.
@@Communicating2_Realnoclickbait Sonic outright says he hates guns in that game and that he'd never use one. Like maybe something like a dagger would more suit Sonic's speed style; but daggers are more associated with rouge-like characters. I'd say Claws but that's too close to Knuckle's turf. So with those two not really fitting Sonic; if I had to give Sonic any weapon, it would be a sword.
I love how Merlina is an antithesis to Sonic. While Sonic embraces the inevitability of the end and chooses to live life to the fullest in the time he has, Merlina is terrified of the end, and will stop at nothing to keep the story going.
Background The song plays on a continuous loop when Excalibur-Sonic battles the transformed witch Merlina. Given the morbid, sinister nature of the lyrics, the song can be interpreted as being sung primarily from Merlina's point of view. Some if not all lyrics can be interpreted as being from Sonic's as well. The song is featured on the album Face to Faith: Sonic and the Black Knight Vocal Trax, along with its instrumental version and a cover by Crush 40. Lyrics OriginalYou know every world will have its end (have its end)And I'm here to prove it all to youAll wrapped up in my evil planSavor night (savor night)Evil's might (evil's might)You think (you think) that you have power over meYou know, every world will have its test (have its test)Don't blame for what I have becomeYou know every world will come to end (come to end)Savor night (savor night)You think (you think) that you have power over meSavor night (savor night) You think (you think) that you have power over me
Boss fight wise it is the best song in the game but overall I'd say that's debatable since Live Life by Crush 40 is in a league of its own compared to the rest of the soundtrack except this song and Knight of the wind as close second and close third with Knight of the Wind being Second.
Sonic: "Merlina, every world has its end. Which means, we're all gonna die. So if you won't live your life while you can, you might as well throw yourself off a bridge."
when i found this video, i just felt like i was forced to watch this, but then i know why i was forced to listen to this song... it was the greatest thing i've ever heard... not even gonna pretend that im not interested into this...
I still think SEGA needs to revisit the Storybook Series. No gimmicks, no stupid motion controls, just simple controls with fun on-rails running gameplay with legitimately good stories and kickass music. SEGA has a bad habit of flubbing good ideas and then just never touching them again. (NiGHTS Journey of Dreams anyone?)
The motion controls mad black knight a wee bit more fun. Secret rings forced it in. But I totally agree! After the poll about the third game the series just got abandoned. I would love a return!
As much as people may overlook this game, I think it's EXCEPTIONALLY important to understanding Sonic. Sonic dosen't stand for good or evil. Sonic stands for freedom. Even if *he* has to be the "villian" who secures the inevitable end of the story; the world, that's better than losing freedom. No-one has power over him. Keep going foward with freedom, nomatter what's to come. Sonic would oppose a legitimately good-intentioned iron-fisted rule just as much he would Eggman's.
Sonic and the Black Knight will always be in my top 5 favorite sonic games, it was one of the first sonic games I played and is pretty much what got me into sonic to begin with alongside Sonic X

Apologies this is so long, but it is a deep analysis, there is a lot to Sonic's character, and even Shadow and Silver than people give Sega credit for.
this game is PEAK
“I told you. I don’t mind playing the bad guy for once”
Sonic doesn't mind being the bad guy once in a while
His true character arc is ALWAYS doing what he thinks is right
Nothing will stop him
I mean sonic wasn't a bad guy there because I believe that every world should have it's end too, I mean I'm not just saying in the games but in real life as well, god created the world and gave it a day where it will end and we can never change that, the world has it's end because god created this world just to test each human if he's good or bad, then the world will end and the evil will be in hell and the good will be in paradise so sonic is actaully right.
@@Starfall_abyssi just think every world should end cause everything would get boring and we would have to die at some point
@@blbplays yeah
I always had the headcannon that This version was witch lady 'singing it' and the Crush 40 version was Sonic 'singing it.

I don’t know how people used “sonic has a sword” as a negative as if that is not the coolest thing.
Given this was the last game before the big change in voice cast and writing staff, I think they wrote this song about endings on purpose.
A game about a blue fast hedgehog that eats chillidogs sent into a medieval world didn't have to go THIS hard.
The dialogue between sonic and merlina was amazing in this fight . 2 ideologies clashing in one epic battle
I found about this song today and I've pretty much listened to it all day.

“Like I said, I don’t mind being the bad guy this time around.”
Except he really isnt.He just thought merlina's immortality ideas are stupid because imagine everyone dying and you being the only thing left
tremendous game, its soundtrack is epic, its story is great, the gameplay with the wii mote was somewhat weak but the truth is that you end up getting used to it and it no longer makes you annoying and you enjoy more
If u imagine this game was without sonic characters, I would believe this game would've been liked more.
@@raikaria3090 yeah sonic with a gun isn't a good idea (im looking at you shadow)

Exacto
I love how Merlina is an antithesis to Sonic. While Sonic embraces the inevitability of the end and chooses to live life to the fullest in the time he has, Merlina is terrified of the end, and will stop at nothing to keep the story going.

All I remember from this game is the fact my prepubescent self killed a ton of npcs accidentally and that this song was a banger.
Background
The song plays on a continuous loop when Excalibur-Sonic battles the transformed witch Merlina.

Hands down best song in the game
Boss fight wise it is the best song in the game but overall I'd say that's debatable since Live Life by Crush 40 is in a league of its own compared to the rest of the soundtrack except this song and Knight of the wind as close second and close third with Knight of the Wind being Second.
Sonic: "Merlina, every world has its end. Which means, we're all gonna die. So if you won't live your life while you can, you might as well throw yourself off a bridge."
They need to bring back the “Sonic with a sword” concept back
when i found this video, i just felt like i was forced to watch this, but then i know why i was forced to listen to this song... it was the greatest thing i've ever heard... not even gonna pretend that im not interested into this...
Well he’s not an anarchist or anything
Sonic with a sword in full body gilded armor will always be dope!
