Kerrigan Kills Mengsk and Leaves Jim on Korhal (Starcraft 2 Ending | Ascension Cinematic 16:9)

- Mengsk sheltered within his palace as the Swarm and Raynor's Raiders pushed toward the palace. The elite Dominion formations dug in around the palace broke under the assault. Kerrigan entered the palace, cut through the guard, and confronted Mengsk in his office. The emperor used a remote control to disable Kerrigan with the Keystone. Mengsk tauntingly called her his greatest failure and prepared to kill her, when Raynor suddenly appeared. Raynor threw Mengsk across the room, and in the process destroyed the remote. The rebel raised but then put away his revolver, and let Kerrigan impale the emperor in both shoulders. Grievously wounded, Mengsk stated he made her a monster, to which she retorted that he made monsters out of everyone. Kerrigan infused Mengsk with psionic energy, causing him to die in a violent explosion... I decided to reformat this video to 1080p Full HD ratio (that is 16:9). Originally video was 1920:812 (that is widescreen ratio of about 2,37:1). But if you don't have the monitor with that aspect ratio (and I very doubt that you do), you'll get "black lines" above and below video that I personally don't like. But I didn't simply "rescaled" the video - thus you would miss many important details, because in some frames the meaningful part is located not at the very center but on the left or right side of the frame. So, I cut the original video into dozens of pieces defined by the scene and keyframes and imposed different scaling, spatial interpolation, i.e. transitions, to each of the pieces. Thus trying to lose as little notable material from the video as possible...

who cares
I do care. Good job, Jake.
They can always meet again
I love how Jim brought down the blast visor. He knew what was coming lol.
He so did.
The little details are often times the best
Now this is where I find it most interesting, in a small theory I've always had, Jim puts his visor down as he does not want to see what she will do. He has never forgiven himself for what happened to her, and instead of seeing a violent monster she has become cause of Arcturus, he shuts his visor to remember her before all this happens, as he truly loved her, but this form(literal queen of hell imo)has no room for love.
@@mathewrichardson2962 that or he just knew he's in the blast radius, so he shut it to cover himself. Better save than sorry
He knows how deadly she is.
I just noticed Raynor puts his visor down before she impales Mengsk. Gotta be ready for the splatter lmao
and puts down his blast shield so he doesn't see it.
@@ComradeDragon1957 no he put down the blast shield so his face doesnt fucking explode

Same. Well, I actually notice that the first time
Yeah he was like:
"Finallay gonna use this shit on your face... huh, never mind..."
Love it how at 2:25 when Kerrigan is getting back up, Jim just steps back and pulls down his face shield that is designed to protect against nukes
Well, they kinda tend to have the same result in certain ways.
Same shit.
All this time playing SC2, I never noticed that
Mengsks Voice is so unbelievably good, the arrogance and utter control and hatred oozes from ervey syllable. Kudos to the voice actor, stellar performance.
Mengsk is one of the few people who actually almost killed Kerrigan. Sure he had help from Keystone but tricking Kerrigan by disguising the Keystone activation switch to lighter was impressive. Obviously you would put your guard down if you witness a man in a pinch and has nothing but lighter and cigar. I guess Mengsk final ace in the hole plan was to utilize Keystone's power to kill Kerrigan and destroy the Zerg Swarm surrounding his castle and hold up until reinforcement from other Dominion colonies arrive. But, Raynor's attack was something he was completely unprepared for. If Mengsk was wearing CMC Power Suit, it could've hold his own against Raynor in close combat, after all Mengsk was former military commander of Terran Confederacy as well as leader of Sons of Korhal, so he was proficient at using CMC Suit and Gauss Rifle.
I love how zeratul was there but you couldn't see him being the Dark Templar he is

@@DarthHavoc1 same but I think it’s a joke
"I'm the man that's gonna kill you someday" - Jim raynor 1998
joke: He kind of does considering they later basically dive into StarCraft's version of hell together.
not joke: I think it would've been more interesting to make him reluctant to let her live / save her. They did well in terms of building up how guilty he felt and even Zeratul's crystal thing to give him a reason not to kill her. But they missed the mark when it came to linking his Brood War stance to his love for her in the sequel.
Personally I wonder how the story might have morphed if it was a true continuation of the Brood War story, making her the antagonist.
I know this voice line might make SC2 seem inconsistent but really if you pay attention it is clear in Wings of Liberty that Jim is fine with killing Kerrigan until he realizes that it is even a possibility to make her human again, and in the lore he tried multiple times to kill her prior to the start of WoL. And, of course, there is also the prophecy from Zeratul that makes it clear Kerrigan cannot die if the universe is to be saved. Blizzard doesn't pretend Jim never said that line either, as Kerrigan directly references it in the cutscene where she rescues him in Heart of the Swarm. Given that Jim was referring to the Queen of Blades, you can argue in a way that he did kill her when he used the artifact to deinfest her.
Well he kind of did. He killed the queen of blade and save kerrigan from the influence of the fallen xelnaga
3:34 I have never seen such a profound display of lost love than in this scene here. Both Jim and Kerrigan sadly say goodbye to each other, despite painfully being in love with each other, but understanding they can never be together. It’s enough to make any cynic cry. So beautiful
And then you see the final cutscene of Legacy of the Void...
Either way it was our pressure always was.
They're gonna shove their "happily ever after" down our throats in SC3 should there ever be one, then we'll get a shock ending of their children being the ultimate hybrid species.

@@winzyl9546 Yes you are.
You know what would have been more satisfying, turning him into a zerg. Under kerrigan's control. His greatest fear
That's what old Queen of Blades would do i guess.
Still would've been too dangerous. Especially if he somehow managed to turn into a Zerg like her, gained sentience. Granted, unlikely since he wasn't a psi op, but still. Imagine a tyrant like him with even a fraction of that power. Nope. Better safe than sorry.
@@halhala2 Eh, the whole story is a bit weird. They gave Stukov a lot more power then he should have had as an infested terran. I consider only the original Starcraft and Starcraft Broodwar to be cannon - Mengsk should have become an explosive infested terran with no ability to control himself, then used to kill someone else he was close to. That would have been poetic.
@@zxcvbnmasdfghjkl51 Except the only person Mengsk might've cared about was Valerian, and he seemed eager enough to cast him aside early on. Besides which, Valerian wasn't an asshole and she knew that. There really was no one left to kill but him.

Never lit that last cigar.. shows his arrogance, as if he thought he would have plenty of time to smoke it later.
It was a trick to caught Kerrigan off-guard thinking the Artifact's trigger was just an ordinary cigarette lighter. Cause if she had knew, she would either just immediately flee it's blast radius or quickly killed Mengsk before he even had the chance to pulled the trigger
that cigar is completely rotten and all dried up anyway. it needs to be stored in a environment with high moisture that needs constant care. Just putting it in a case like that for god knows how long looks cool to the noob but I guarantee you every cigar afficionado heavily cringed when they saw that lol
@@luke12346789 It appears Artifact was his last Ace in the Hole. Perhaps Mengsk was planning to use Keystone/Xelnaga Artifact's power to kill Kerrigan and the Zerg Swarm forces surrounding his castle and hold up until reinforcements from other Dominion territories arrive. In Wing's of Liberty, Keystone was powerful enough to wipe out millions of Zergs in full power so if it wasn't for Raynor's entrance, there was still chance for Mengsk to defeat Kerrigan and her broods.
Raynor says “change of plans” just like mengsk did before he betrayed Kerrigan. Just thought I’d point out that callback.

After Legacy of the Void, she is also now the most powerful being in the universe lmao. And Raynor’s hitting that.
@Amber Wolf lmfao 🤣
I still think it’s funny all the times throughout these games when people underestimated her like this scene he knew that the single most dangerous person alive was on her way to kill him and he sets up a glorified taser that only effects her.
Like even if raynor didn’t show up he had already lost the battle and was standing on a planet controlled by Zerg where an untold thousands could easily swarm in at a moments notice.
True. That idea has always been bugging me. Like, sure, you killed Kerrigan, but Zagara was still there, and the Swarm. And, Raynor and his Raiders. Even his son who admitted just a few cutscenes back that his dad needed to die was there too. He still wouldn't have gotten out of the planet alive. What exactly was Arcturus thinking?
I think it's the point where he already realized he's going to die anyway, but he wanted to kill her just for the spite of it.
A swarm with no one to command it and the Dominion navy rapidly closing in...? Legacy of the Void already made it clear Dominion troops were still fighting long after Mengsk died.
@@Thurnmourer it’s established that most of if not all of the swarm wasn’t directly under her control but instead under her brood mothers who led the fighting and tactical decisions so her dying would only minimally if at all effect the swarm. Plus Mengsk seems like the type of guy who doesn’t care about all the soldiers fighting for him given what he’s done so the only thing he cares about is himself in my opinion. Even if he killed Kerrigan most likely that would lead to the entire swarm well swarming the building and tearing it down to scrap metal ignoring the possibility of loss if she had died.
All mengsk gains in his actions in this cutscene is a possibility of claiming to be the one who killed her he would have been safer doing almost anything other than what he did like as she said he could have evacuated, or he could have hid somewhere she didn’t know about, or even better he could have worn any armor at all like this dude is in the middle of a war zone knowing that the single most dangerous person alive is headed to kill him and is dressed like he’s about to give a speech.

yea that's how plot contrivances work

@@alexbot8826 Nah, it makes sense. Jim despises the Queen of Blades and that never changes. They make it clear that he is absolutely pissed when he realizes Kerrigan went back to being Zerg, and he rips into her for the billions she killed. The reason Jim changes his mind is because he realizes that Kerrigan is not actually the Queen of Blades again. She is not the monstrous figure created by the Overmind but rather has complete free will and a moral conscience, to the point where she repeatedly agrees to prevent the deaths of millions of civilians on Korhal despite making her invasion harder. When Jim realizes Kerrigan is still Kerrigan and that deinfesting her wasn't all for nothing he can't just plausibly stand idle while she prepares to fight against a universe-destroying god.

@@Ishlacorrin Maybe, but, she had the free will to basically tell the Swarm to make like the insects they are and bugger off. But didn't.
@@bloodbrawler1438 Not at the start, she had no free will till the Overmind was killed and after that she was still tainted by Amon's overriding will placed within the swarm. The bit where Jim grabs Mengsk is exactly how I imagine me “helping out” my arch nemesis
Wasn't there a part where she tells the zerg to leave the planet and the panic people on the radio inform raynor the zerg are leaving?

Everytime I rewatch this and the cinematics it always makes me wonder if the Terran Dominion fought the 40k imperium who would win.
Terran has them completely bested in aerial combat because their ships are far more advanced and can warp way more faster than 40k ones. I feel that marines vs 40ks space Marines is a tough one but 40k wins because they have genetics augmentations and fire literal rockets for bullets but I think Terran marauders even it out. Terran wins the matchup simply due to their massive tech advantage. I would add during the war the imperium would dominate in ground encounters because of their tactics to just endlessly send troops until they win but the Terran battlecruisers, vikings, cloaked banshees, and all their aerial craft could just glass the imperium's position until their is nothing left. The Terrans also have artillery that can literally fire from tens of thousands of miles away so all they would have to do is just endlessly fire at the imperium's position until they all die or retreat
Another interesting comparison is wether the zerg would win or lose if they encountered the flood from halo
Zerg leviathans are capable of warp so that instantly means that they beat the flood in mobility.
I think applicability wise they are evenly matched because both are hyper viral but the zerg posses far more combat centered units than the flood does. The only advantage the flood has is if they create and conceal a gravemind or keymind. My guess is that the flood will fight a defensive battle for most of the way until they can adapt to the zerg. The zergs units also can go in space while the flood can't
I think the 40k Imperium would still win because of sheer scale. Even a ruined empire that consists of humanity in it's darkest age still has massive amounts of manpower and weaponry. And don't discount the sheer fanaticism of Commissars, Sisters of Battle, Techpriests, and of course the Space Marines themselves. Do or die charges by true believers is a remarkably common occurrence for them.
Even in RTS mechanics, I think the Imperium has a leg up, as the Terrans need to (reactors aside) build 1 unit at a time per structure while the Imperium fields entire squads in the same time, and since the Terran model relies on harvesting resources in active battlefields, it's much more vulnerable to disruption. 1 Terran marine might beat 1 Imperial Guardsman, but what about 5, or 2 against 10? That's not even getting into squad upgrades like specialized weapons.
Lol the Imperium wins because.
A) Sheer scale and numbers, if they brought all their resources into this, calling it overkill is being generous.
B) The Terran Dominion has the edge on some technologies but the Imperium is not as backwater as you give it credit for.
C) That's without counting the hundreds of specialists the Imperium has, Space Marines can tear apart Dominion Marines easily.
Even if you put them at the same scale of forces, the Imperium wins, they have just any kind of equipment to deal with any situation.
Yeah it may seem somewhat comparable on the surface but the imperium is much more advanced than you give it credit for, I don't think there is even a terran technological equivalent for a single warlord titan let alone a things like the ubiquitous plasma and laser weaponry they employ on even their basic infantry, I do agree that the terran fleets seem much more mobile not having to rely on the crummy warp for travel and can freely develop new tech at a rapid pace, they would have the long term advantage if they could survive for long enough to gain further technology, but frankly I doubt they would get the chance xD
@@ignaciotaborda6538 I think if you scaled the dominion up, they'd have a good shot at winning because the terrans are much more technologically flexible. The Imperium gets their technology from ten thousand year old fabricators that they can't change, whereas the Terrans get theirs from research and development. Any tech lead the imperium had the terrans study and replicate, whereas over time the Terrans would become increasingly technologically superior.

When I pair up with Kerrigan as Mengsk or vice versa in co-op, I sometimes say "I made you into a monster... KHARRIGAN" and make people familiar with lore to crack up
I always play tychus and call Raynor Jimmy and Talk to mengsk about our deal.
AH MADE YEW INTO A MAWNSER, KHERRIGHAN
Raynor+Kerrigan=LOVE
So this is who Dwight Was for Halloween
Thats twice our good ol boy Raynor saved Kerrigan.
everytime when I look at Mengsk in coop, I still cant figure out how he lose Korhal.
Imagine Multiple Commanders vs 1.
This feels like a movie
Bitter sweet ending for the two of them. The bar scene afterwards tops it off
" I think I'll leave you here, Arcturus, among the ashes of your precious Dominion. I want you to live to see me rise to power. And I want you to always remember in your most private moments that it was you who turned me loose in the first place." Kerrigan after defeating Mengsk 1999
“ I made you into a monster”
Hmm, maybe don’t remind her of why she wants to kill you?
Everyone talks about the end of this scene but the beginning where Kerrigan takes on the army when she was at her strongest was just insane, get chills when they all lift off the ground
"You don't think I'd keep an animal around me, without some kind of insurance policy?" -Cues the State Farm logo.
everyone commenting on the plot, meanwhile all I can think about is:
"HOW IS SHE FLYING, THAT'S NOT HOW PHYSICS WORK!"
we dont know much about physics yet xD
This is game about universe where biological creatures can use powers to open worm holes while using wings to fly in space....
She's a Telekinetic. Mind powers.
You failed me, Mengsk!

[Kerrigan uses her dragon-like Zerg wings to forcibly pry open the sealed doors, and boldly enters Mengsk's inner office in his palace on Korhal; he has a cigar in his teeth and what looks like a lighter in his hand as he turns and stands to face her directly.]
Arcturus Mengsk: [greeting her] "Hello, Kerrigan. I've been waiting for you."
Sarah Kerrigan: [laughs in amusement, while smirking] "I'm surprised you haven't tried to escape."
Arcturus Mengsk: "Escape?" [chuckles evilly] "My dear, I'm afraid you've got it all wrong."
[Mengsk reveals the "lighter" to be a control switch, as the Xel'Naga artifact raises from a compartment in the floor; he presses the control, blasting Kerrigan with energy, which causes her to writhe and scream in pain and agony.]
Arcturus Mengsk: "Really. Did you think I'd keep an animal like you close to me without some kind of insurance policy?" [gives Kerrigan another painful jolt] "Clearly, you are my greatest failure. Now, at long last... you will die!"
[Mengsk is suddenly grabbed from behind by a power-armored Jim Raynor, the switch in his hand crushed as he's lifted off the floor.]
Jim Raynor: [raising his visor] "Change of plans."
[Raynor angrily hurls Mengsk across the room and draws his pistol, but steps back as Kerrigan advances on the fallen emperor, impaling him against the wall with her draconic wing-spikes.]
Sarah Kerrigan: [seething with rage] "You can never suffer enough for all the lives you've ruined, Arcturus."
Arcturus Mengsk: [hatefully spatting at her through clenched teeth] "I made you into a monster, Kerrigan!"
Sarah Kerrigan: [retorting, before delivering the finishing blow] "You made us all into monsters."
[Kerrigan reaches out with one hand, unleashing a spike of psionic energy into Mengsk's head. Mengsk screams as the power explodes within him, vaporizing him and destroying his office. That backstabbing and treacherous son of a bitch Arcturus Mengsk definitely deserved what was coming to him in the end. He totally had it coming for a long time. Remarkably, Raynor and Kerrigan are unscathed.]
Sarah Kerrigan: [gazing up at the swarm in the sky] "Thank you, Jim... for everything."
[Kerrigan levitates into the air to join the swarm.]
Jim Raynor: "My pleasure, darlin'." [smiles] "Always was."
[The scene goes to space, approaching a deep blackness in the void.]
Sarah Kerrigan: [voiceover] "I now see my true enemy. He waits for me in the void, wielding powers I cannot imagine. I go to face him, having renounced everything: My humanity. My identity. The man I love. But I will not face this enemy alone. I am the Swarm."
We waited 15 years for Mengsk to finally get what was coming to him.
Imagining being so rich you bought a fancy box just to put a cigar in it.
Ngl at the end when the videos where popping up was pretty cool, matching the speech as if they want you to watch the other videos
Wooow, this's totally awesome. Like Alita Battle Angel but better. Just imagine if it had the visuals of that film though. Like woooow.
We really need to make this story into a full length film series.
Would love if Raynor had huged her at lthe end. What a heartbraking Lovestory ;3
Wait but i thought she comes back
@@UlyssesSGrant-vw6eg yes, at the end of Into the Void, that is the best scene in SC2, hands down and I will fight any who disagree
@@UlyssesSGrant-vw6eg kerrigan and jim lived happily ever after in the end of SC2 Legacy of the Void.
Jimmy ends up with her in the end. It's not heartbreaking.
@@CarnageTheory We didn't know that at the time. It was a good moment regardless.
2024 and still watching this …. 😢
I think just before he blows up it should just flash back to raynor putting his visor down would have been sick
ahh 1998 starcraft broodwar.............got too old for this
I don't entirely understand why Kerrigan was affected by the Xel'Naga artifact here, since she isn't actually possessed by Amon anymore. The reason it affected her on Char was that she (and her Zerg) were affected by Amon, right?
WufeiLord Nice dude, but it only harms her in body and mind since her psychic powers were created by the Xel'Naga, which means that it can hurt her through the Keystone although it can't deinfest her, but it could hurt her physically and psychologically.
Not exactly, Kerrigan is somewhat especial for some reason dunno why. That was why she was chosen by the Overmind to become the new leader of the zergs. In away she was an infested terran before and body and mind trying to somehow adjust the new DNA introduced but after the artifact super nova she fused with the zergs DNA.
Artifact wave kill zerg, Kerrigan got serg DNA. Kinda simple.
WufeiLord c
The artifact can change energy and information. So it can be configured to do anything basically. You just need the required knowledge which the terren doesn't possess while the protoss somewhat understood after karax experiments. Narud configured the keystone to throw energy bolts that can harm the zerg while don't harm terrans (so that mengsk can safely kill kerrigan). After that mengsk may have other buttons which can activate energy nova and maybe able to defend the planet.
Creates chaos, not to mention massive loss of life.
Kills the only capable member of the previous government.
Destroys almost all military capability of the nation.
Floats away .
Refuses to elaborate further.
This history and lore is amazing...
Kinda nice that Raynor gave her the kill,he had a literal bullet with Mengsk's name on it but she deserved it more because of all Mengsk put her trough.
I kinda like the twist that he kept the Xel'naga artifact,he didnt use it in the battle but since it doesnt work on humans he probably planned on killing Kerrigan and making the Zergs run wild and attack Raynor's raiders.
Sometimes a monster is what is needed.
Imagine if they put this time into the game instead of just cinematics
are you going to play the legacy of the void next?
+Aleksa Antonijevic Yeah, of course. Though I'll make several Witcher 3 videos before that I think.
How can an explosion that destroys thick steel wall not damage Jim's armor or Kerrigan?
shaped charge facing forward towards the window.
Plot armor
I think that Kerrigan may be able to survive a direct nuclear strike, and Jim was far back in the room
Also you can see at 4:20 that the floor is still mostly there, the blast went up and out
CMC400 can survive nuke, it's also expensive af
their armor is make of Plotainum
Nice touch in end with videos links timed out
