Your milking again after a few weeks and the cows waiting for you at the gate are special. The background view when you're looking at the sun is outstanding.
I remember one good spring years ago(with a lower payout season) it got very time-consuming to milk once a day (mix of jersey & smaller friesian). Milked the cows twice a day for a few weeks across the peak before putting the cows back on once a day.
They are trying to phase out dry cow over here in Ireland, you have to get a vet to prescribe it for any of them that they feel need it luckily our vet has agreed to give us some for anyone who has had a cell count of over 150,000 , but some vets are only giving it to any who have a problem on their last milk recording. More red tape and expense. The price we are getting for our milk is shocking at the moment and doesn’t look like it will improve any time soon either.
It’s pretty much the same here, most people use it going off the last herd test but blanket dry cow is getting banned this season I’m pretty sure. I’m feelin ya, it’s not much better here either. I’m sure itll come right at some point but doesn’t look like it’ll be any time soon 😢🤷

Hi Andrew, good to see that the solids are up and cell count down, congratulations. Given the predicted milk price for this season, do you think its a break even year ?
Wow, 20% up thats awesome Im 21% behind 😢 Had a refrigerant leak , no gas , a dodgy fan, its 8 years old misswd out on 3 pickups Slow calving this time And we stated June with hardly any grass 😢😢
Have you still got the old supplier number by your house? I see it's still there on google maps and shows up on our truck in cab maps, I've never been to that shed but my dad has probably been there hundreds of times over the last 30 years.
He sure would of. Whats the old supply number? I've only ever known this one. When I came home 6 years ago there was 4 supply numbers on bank road, now its just us
@@TheOnceADayFarmer If you take the 7 off your suppler number that, that is the supply number your father had under Anchor so 3684 is the old Anchor number for the shed next to your place, 3683 the one further down the road, not sure about before the Anchor days. I was just thinking that when my family first moved down to Te Awamutu 30 years ago I think we used to live on one of your relatives farms on Macky Access Road which has been an OCD farm for some time now, I'm pretty sure it was owned by one of the Macky family.
I have a difficult time with our seasons just opposite. Did you have any problems with that when in the USA? A good cow with good milk numbers is worth the giving another calf. The cows are so much easier to handle when they know your voices and actions when sorting. What you are showing the kids is what more needs to be done. The kids of the World NEED to learn where their food comes from. Tp many think their food comes from the grocery stores. Thanks Andrew!! I have learned something every year I have watched your videos.
Great video Andrew. Good to see production is up and cell count looking good 👍How many milkings do you keep the colostrum cows out before putting into vat? And are you still using the milk checker?
Thanks, Colostrums have to be out milked 8 times before they can go in the vat. Nah it actually broke a while back, Dad sent it away to get fixed but I don't think they could
@@TheOnceADayFarmer All I'm going off is most economists are point to no lift in dairy commodity prices till late 4th qtr 2024 or early 2025 the economy is fucked now it's just how long it takes to get through people skulls
Nah we don't, and I don't really know to much about them but From what I can gather they can also have there flaws at times, We supply 95% of our milk products offshore so I don't know if it would help or not, and Fonterra is a farmer owned co-op and all the farmers want as much as they can get but we do have to ride the highs and lows
Great question and to be fair I wouldnt have a clue, Its not something I have really looked at but its a very interesting topic. Usually the determining factor is around mastitis/ssc or if they are empty so for my cows to get to 8 lactations they have done pretty well
I have a Jersey cow, and I always believed in milking at least 2x, but she's battled ketosis twice in this lactation, I finally elected to start milking her once a day, she's a whole different cow, must be something to it I think, besides labor and energy savings.
@@JohanneSchmidt-tl4op its a lot easier on the cow only getting milked once a day. they can handle it unless your a really high input system but suits us. That's good to hear though!
I'm so jealous watching you and your father on the farm. I grew up on a dairy and that was all I wanted to do. Now I'm 70 and I'd love to live right where you are. But I wonder if you all are like us here in America. We've forgotten that Jesus died on a cross for our sins and if we believe on Him, our sins will be forgiven and we can live forever in paradise. It's kinda like where you guy's live. I pray that you know Him.
Cows are looking very good. I can't wait for spring too!
It's so sweet that your dad put some eggs in there for the littles to find.
Your calves look like a herd of fawns. So sweet
Just going to bed... checking out if there is a new video.. Happy to see this.
All the best from the Netherlands!

Fair enough, would be interesting to see how many people change to OAD this season with the payout
Hey Andrew with the herds performance I think genetics are playing their part too. Nice to see the little ones checking out the farm
Yes I think they are starting to come through, I think in the next couple of years they will play a bigger role
I have been milling sinse 7 years old
We are heading into fall here in northern Michigan. Leaves are starting to change color. Kiddos are heading back to school from summer break
Calves looking great. You should have feed a calf days for town kids, $ a bottle! You'll be enjoying today's weather
Not a bad idea!

What happens to bull calves once weaned?. You keep them as beef stock or sell them?
No I try and sell as many as I can to calf rearers but thats a hit and miss market otherwise they go for veal
