    The center locker was mostly for the full time 4wd, which was standard on all v8 4Runners. On Full time 4wd models, the transfer case had a torsen differential which when not locked had a 30% front and 70% rear power distribution. When locked, its basically the same as 4 HI (50F/50R power distribution). The manual tcase has no torsen diff (hence the shorter case), as it's not a full time 4WD case. Hope this helps.

    • @AveryOliver1994
      @AveryOliver1994 15 днів тому +1

      Came here to say the same. Manual transfer-cases are part-time. Meaning they are either engaged or disengaged. They don't have a torsen or some other diff inside that allows for slip between front/rear, so they do not need a center lock. They are fully locked when in 4-hi or 4-lo.

    Great video man! Lots of helpful information and shots, I'm going to have to get this done now. Regarding the front driveshaft I've seen a couple people mention they swapped in a 1st gen Tundra front driveshaft and it's basically the perfect length for this application.

      I had ECGS rebuild and re-gear my diffs. They are also warranted and the shipping wasn't horrible. I highly recommend going this route. That being said, if you are running a 4th gen 4Runner, early FJ Cruiser (2007-2009) or GX470, they all have the smaller 8" rear diff which is known to break because of the higher torque motors and added weight of these vehicles (ask me how I know). I would seriously recommend swapping an entire rear axle assembly from a 5th gen 4runner or 2010+ FJ Cruiser as Toyota upgraded to an 8.2" thats a big stronger than the 8". It's a direct bolt in swap. I did this swap on my 4th gen V8 runner, along with re-gearing and adding ARB air lockers. ;)

    • @Garrett_Logan
      @Garrett_Logan  15 днів тому +2

      @@grantorresmo7609 Michael’s comment is great information🤙🏾
      I went the ECGS route as well and it’s definitely more cost effective. I personally went with the 8” but highly debated the 8.2” swap. I didn’t feel knowledgeable enough so I stuck with the 8 but if you can do the 8.2” the definitely do it.
      There are people that are way more knowledgeable in the gearing area than me but I’ve definitely contemplated posting a video on it.
      If you look at my Instagram @thereal_alpha_line you’ll see a reel I made of me swapping the gears

    There's another option for the ADD/engagement issue. If you convert to manual locking hubs (not sure how feasible that is on 4th gen) you won't have the full time drag on the front diff when 4wd isn't engaged. Front axle shafts will last longer cause they wont be spinning, and gas mileage will be marginally better. This is a common mod on 3rd gen.
