That is a killer design! After finishing a 14-foot hops trellis I realized it was a bit unwieldy. I’ll be building a couple of those collapsible trellises this weekend. Thanks!
Interesting idea. I am always on the lookout for 8-foot-tall bamboo stakes to stake of my single-stemmed indeterminates. I have been disappointed with wood stakes rotting underground by the end of the growing season. All the big box stores in my area have 6 foot ones but, to my dismay, never the necessary 8 foot ones. Hope your hops take a liking to your new trellis system, I reckon they will!
I'm planning on growing hops this year, might test your method on at least one of the vines. Not sure what I'm doing just yet, just going off of what I've read
This looks GOOD! I'm watching this and trying to figure how to make an A-frame support for my indeterminate tomatoes, that usually get about 8-ft. Wanting to make a support that will train the whole row, and can be folded-up for storage for next year. Because I'm rotating which row gets tomatoes each year - I have to be able to move it to the new row each Spring. Something like a swing-set frame that folds on the top. 🤔
Hey Gary, thanks for all of your awesome videos, you have a successful first time gardener as a result of your tutorials! Out of curiosity, what do you use your hops for? Do you brew any beer?
enjoyed your video, Gary I am wanting to grow beans In my garden this year but I don,t seem to get a very good harvest when I grow them, what do you think I am doing wrong I use compost In my beds I live in zone 7
I would try and go with Sechellyes Pole Beans. I did a video on them and they did well in the ground and containers. Just search the name, lots of companies sell them.
Another very informative topic. Big fan of your channel. Off topic question maybe you can help me with Gary. I have tried several plastic pots, roughly 15 gallon size. They last about a year and a half and then the plastic gets brittle, they crack and disintegrate. I noticed in many of your videos you have successfully used plastic pots. I am trying to find a source for large pots that survive the UV rays, which i think is the cause of the cracking.
UV is what does it. You have to spend more on UV protected plastic. You can actually get clear UV spay paint for the outside and even use sunscreen. Sounds crazy but sunscreen works. But is UV.
we grow centennial. started with two plants 5 yrs ago, now i have 10 plants because they need divided. we have a one story house and they get that high. my husband constructed 2 vertical conduit and one conduit on top. he has heavy duty rope to lower the top piece down. he ties twine on this top piece raises this tube up with the rope....it would probably be better to take a pic and show.

It will be interesting to see how tall hops gets.
You might to to hop to reach them ;)

If I had more vines, I would go with a different design. This should work. I know some vines blow by 18 feet.

When are you putting your tomatoes out? Mine are out in zone 8b.
They are out. The tour video just before this one, shows what I have out. I put out my determinate varieties.
Hi Gary: What about using metal fence posts for tomatoes? My concern is if the fence posts rust. Would that rust make the tomatoes not edible?
Rust is okay. The fence post are solid to.
Rust is okay. The fence post are solid to.
what is the minimum spacing for indeterminate tomatoes?
Minimum is two feet in a long row. Spacing helps with disease management depending on what creeps in in your zone.
i grow hops. my husband has a great system down. they grow higher than our house
How many plants? If I did more I would probably build a pole a clothes line system. Is it true the get 18 feet and more.

Thanks. I understand. I was looking at designs like that. If I get a row of hops, that is the direction I might go.
With a Dremil, cut 2" or 3" off the bolts. Quicker nut removal, easier to move around and safer. You don't want that in an eye or somewhere else.
Oh good idea,
